Donald Trump is Terrifying. Why Have the RNC Protests Been So Lame?
These protesters may be no match for Trump's red hat public relations machine.
If you walk around outside the 2016 Republican National Convention you may think you'd find thousands of protesters ready to vent their anger at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his xenophobic ideas. But, what you'd really find is a lot of reporters hunting for stories and sparsely attended protests.

I would guess that, for the most part, the protesters are in favor of "business as usual" Republicanism. True Conservatives are keeping their poweder dry and eyeing Shrillary, who has all of Trump's bad points plus scads of her own. BAU Republicanism may make the Old Guard happy, but it probably doesn't really arouse much passion.
I'm guessing the overwhelming security is a major deterrent to actual rioting and violence. There's also minimal ability to actually disrupt anything since all the streets around the area are blocked off anyway.
So you end up with people just shouting slogans at each other while bored riot cops stand in the middle.
Plus I think the 'anarchists' finally had to get a job to pay off those student loans - they aren't going away - and don't have time and money to travel for the purposes of throwing chairs through windows.
Keeping in mind that Ohio is an open carry state, the Trump protesters were able to rub enough brain cells together and come to the conclusion that beating the crap out of a Trumpster in Ohio is a real safe activity.
ooops! is NOT a real safe activity
Let me try this again:
Historians Against Trump
"Historians Against Trump does not align itself with any political party or candidate."
Who would dare suspect such a thing?
"Many among us do not identify as activists and have never before taken part in such a campaign."
Be gentle with us, it's our first time!
Oh thank God, the return of Papier mache heads.
Anybody who finds Donald Trump terrifying should seek professional help.
Trump sucks, but half the things I hear people go after him turn out to not be true.
He's wiling to bomb ISIS regardless of whether their families are in the way.
It's not like wants to nationalize healthcare, use taxpayer money to nationalize GM, or appoint Supreme Court justices who are hostile to our Second Amendment rights.
For goodness' sake, listening to him talk about his opposition to the Iraq War, he sounded damn reasonable.
Has Hillary even admitted that Iraq was a mistake, yet? If anything's frightening, it's a candidate who can't learn from mistakes that cost us thousands of American lives, tens of thousands more in American casualties, more than a $1 trillion and counting, and left American in a less secure position vis-a-vis both terrorism and Iran than we were before we invaded.
"It's not like (he) wants to nationalize healthcare, use taxpayer money to nationalize GM, or appoint Supreme Court justices who are hostile to our Second Amendment rights."
Oh my god, that's worse than Hitler! /Historian against Trump

I love the epilepsy warning... two minutes into a 2:02 minute video. Someone has a lot of fun making these things, I bet.
Hey, Warty, have you got any thoughts on intermittent fasting for weight loss and modest bulking? I'm already on a low-carb regimen but I'm curious whether you've toyed with it at all.
(been looking for reasonably solid evidence one way or the other, but I trust random power-bulking bloggers about as well as I do nutrition experts, which is to say not much. I did come across this, which is interesting and seems reasonably well-informed, but who knows)
Pitch perfect.
Because they are doing a good enough job of discrediting themselves. At least I hope.
I was often down near zucotti park during the Occupy Wall Street thing, ~ October 2011
during lunch, i'd occasionally see what the patter was from the protesters, to see if they had anything interesting to say.
(One dude was a Ron Paul-ite who actually made a pretty good "End the Fed" case, but was sadly misunderstood by many of his more unicorn-economics/communist-y peers)
Anyway, this one dude was trying to lecture me about how the govt should just wipe-out lots of kinds of debt, and i was quizzing him on aspects of "HOW DEBT ACTUALLY WORKS"
He considered himself the financial-expert of his peer group; he had somehow never been introduced to the concept of 'maturity' at any point, and saw no reason that short-term or long-term debt should be treated differently. and so on. it was all sort of a mess.
Finally i just sighed and said,
"Best of luck with your whole protest thing, but it might help if you knew the first thing about WHAT you were protesting against, or WHAT you were really demanding. As it stands, you're not fit to hold Abbie Hoffman's jock-strap"
And he goes, "Oh Yeah?..... Well, who's Abbie Hoffman - your CORPORATE OVERLORD??!?"
I still think that's pretty funny.
I told that story to people at work later that day, and sadly, only like 3 people got the punchline.
You talked to those weirdos? Good lord, I crossed to the other side of the street.
Occupy Wall Street: People who couldn't manage a decent campsite telling us how to run the world.
Terrifying? Tell me that's a typo, and you misspelled "hilarious".
Remember the good old days when the GOP ran Mitt Romney and John McCain? Paul Detrick remembers.
Donald Trump is Terrifying. Why Have the RNC Protests Been So Lame?
Terrifying?. In post rule of law USA, this is what scares you? Not the fucking standing army of pigs with a defacto license to kill? Are you guys trying to see who is the biggest pussy? Well too bad, you have a shit ton of competition.
What is "terrifying" is Reason.com stumbling into The Economist's hair-on-fire analysis; your headlines are preposterous.
The big event is still to come, so there is plenty of time of [insert_stereotype] to commit [insert_crime].
Also, Newt is an excellent speaker; he can go often prompter and come back very smoothly.
Criticizing Headlines is Problematic, and That's Not Okay
What is terrifying is the realization that the electorate is so sick it puked up Trump and Clinton.
Well as a general rule every Dem/Prog/Commie Kid type protest is pretty lame these days. (With the possible exception of the few involving gratuitous and excessive public nudity). But that's only because most of the things they get into pants-shitting mode over anymore are also pretty lame. Back around the late 1960's they had some non-lame ones.
Until they went into academia, got tenure, and started instructing today's intransigent morons on the wonders of social activism.
So most of the drama at the RNC has been inside and very little outside. Does anyone else think it is going to be he opposite at the DNC? You will have former Bernie supporters upset about superdelegates, some Trump people there to stir up trouble and left over occupy movement and anarchists.
Luv me sum dejected Progressive nitwits.
To finish my up-thread comment. Which I was forced to pull out of prematurely, by battery issues. (Which has never happened to me before, other than that one other time.)... The late 60's Vietnam War protests were at the very least in an area where I could possibly cut out some philosophical common ground. The Draft principally. The only good arguments for something of this nature are of the same sort that also would apply in things like Eminant Domain. These are really the most extreme life-boat type scenarios that could justify something of this nature. And I can't see there was the kind of existential threat back then to justify the pointless waste of American lives and wealth. This was the straw that forced us of the quasi-gold standard,FFS. Foolish, expensive and counter-productive.Just as our current overseas adventures have been and will continue to be until we are bankrupt. That being said the one thing that always creeped me out about the Vietnam Era war-antiwar movement was how deep they were in bed they were, philosophically, with the extreme left/socialist types - the present day Sanders,Clinton,Obama etc. I was born in 1970 so all this was before me, but I know from conversations with my older libertarian inclined fellow mentors, many of whom were vets, that this was something of a bridge too far for them as well.
Which is to say, it's not really possible for an honest person to find comfort or common cause, even when the cause may be superficially just, when you realize the movement has been co-opted by various species of delusional slavers.
I would say http://9buz.com/content/upload.....oke_me.jpg
Trump is terrifying?
Another day and another string of Trump/GOP bashing articles here.
I will be watching to see whether they deliver EXACTLY the same treatment in terms of quantity and intensity to the Donkey party when they hold their convention.
Yeah Trump is bad but it is physically impossible to ever be worse than a liberal Democrat - ANY liberal Democrat.
Time to choose - Trump or Hillary. There IS a difference.
Good grief! Hillary (obamanation 3rd term) is far more terrifying than Trump. .... and no silly, Johnson doesn't have a chance. The last time idiots withheld their Republican vote we got a second dose of and socialist democrats.
"Donald Trump is terrifying. Why have the RNC protests been so lame?" One of the better comedic lines you'll read. The Clinton's have collected maybe $350 million in protection money, committed gross criminal violation of sworn testimony, helped destroy black families and helped cause a crime rate among black males largely unexperienced in the rest of the civilized world, very likely raped some women, make a joke of Climate Change through their behavior, visited child sex mansions, tax deductions on used underwear, etc. and this media trash headline buries their head in the sand. Much of the media is liar media but they grow richer and more powerful in their quest for Justice, Ho, ho, ho!
no violence at the gun toting RNC convention. It will be interesting to compare to the DNC convention where guns won't be allowed. Sometimes an armed society is a polite society
Perhaps the run-of-the-mill GOP have finally decided that the Libertarian Alternative (and message) is not conducive to fixing what they perceive as what is wrong with America - particularly when it comes to Open Borders, trade that is seemingly one-sided, and social issues that run against-the-grain of most social mores that they were brought up with?
YMMV!
I am also terrified to recall that at one time I actually considered myself a libertarian and subscribed to your magazine.
Such a drama queen. Trump "terrifies" you but the thought of Fat Legs appointing three or four Supreme Court justices does not. At least you'll have your principles.
To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, libertarians know the price of everything and the value of nothing. You will all go to your graves deluded that whatever glimmers of liberty have broken through the thick veneer of totalitarianism during your lifetimes occurred through your efforts. They didn't. It was luck, mostly.
This election is not between Trump, Clinton, and Johnson. It's between Trump and Clinton. Wake up, you elitist knumbskulls. Nobody gives a shit about Johnson. Not a single one of his programs or ideas will be implemented regardless of who wins in November. You might as well vote for Frommer Bischkva.
P.S. The time to influence electoral politics is BEFORE the primaries, BEFORE the conventions. Can you guys get elected to Congress like Ron Paul or even Rand Paul? Can you get elected dog-catcher? No. Having found that strategy too difficult, requiring actual work and persuasion, the LP instead nominates some duck every four years as the "alternative" to the only two individuals with any chance to be elected. It's actually quite pathetic. You remind me of a kid who was not chosen in a stickball game. You were not chosen. Get over it and work with (in this instance) Trump.
Ask us a hard one. The protests are lame for two reasons. (1) Anyone who understands the most serious reasons Trump is scary has long since quit the Republican Party. (2) The RNC, which controls the convention hall, is above all a professional propaganda machine, and anybody who sounds like he will take votes away from their candidate will be thrown out of the hall.
If the protests are peaceful, then that's all that matters. What exactly is Paul Detrick fishing? Angry, out of control acts in a time of escalating tension between police and citizens? Unruly mobs threatening conventional attendees and speakers?
Some progressives agitators were undoubtedly afraid of by armed Trump fans. But if they didn't want armed citizens in RNC, then they shouldn't have attacked attendees in the recent Trump events. The morons occasionally beat up one of their own. One psycho tried to kill Trump with an officer's gun. You know what they say, you reap what you sow.
We're also living in the era of BLM and ISIS. The best security in the world can't stop a lunatic from running into a crowd with a car filled with bombs. The increased police presence is a ripe opportunity for a cop hunter. There might be trigger happy cop somewhere who might shoot first and ask questions later. You might not like Trump, but you value your life more.
Ultimately this is depressed, low energy election year. There's no one like Obama who energizes anyone. People just don't have much incentive to get involved.
