Has Obama Lived Up to His Soaring Campaign Speeches? We Asked His Former Chief Speechwriter
Reason TV sits down with Jon Favreau for a spirited discussion of Trump's rhetoric and Obama's record on mass surveillance, whistleblowers, drugs, & drones.
In 2005, when then-Senator Barack Obama needed a wordsmith to capture the soaring spirit of his 2004 Democratic National Convention speech, he hired a 24-year-old named Jon Favreau. Fresh from college, Favreau had earned a sterling reputation as a speechwriter for John Kerry during his presidential run, and now he was tasked with helping lift Obama to the presidency.
The wunderkind political messager, who Obama has called his "mind reader" and considered one of his most valued confidantes, served as his chief speechwriter from 2005 to 2013.
"Favs," as the president calls him, was named as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in 2009. He currently co-hosts the podcast Keepin' It 1600 and writes a political column for The Ringer. He was also a speaker at last weekend's Politicon.
Reason TV's Justin Monticello sat down with Favreau to discuss Trump's approach to messaging, why he now supports Hillary after attacking her in 2008, how the Libertarian Party can appeal to voters, and whether Obama's presidency has lived up to the lofty promises and inspiring rhetoric that Favreau crafted.

I know you put a lot of good work into this, Justin, and I respect that. But yeah, I am not gonna watch this.
Right on Chipper. I feel the same way. I rarely feel like listening to the clueless, mindless, inexperienced and childlike emanations from statists or, if not a statist, disingenuous statist supporters. No need to waste my time.
I watched the damn thing and could only come away with one conclusion... "Well yeah, I guess there really are people who are so smug that their own humanity must be called into question."
+1 Empty wine glass
I'll quote him: "I think that sometimes you make good decisions and sometimes... you could have made better decisions."
Compare to:
"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... can't get fooled again."
The message is: evade blame at all costs. When we fuck up, we didn't actually, because we don't ever fuck up. The first quote looks like the slick, practiced way of saying it. The second looks like a barely-recovered fumble into the endzone.
Hope. Change. Marketing the same old shit with a new, shiny package. Drone strikes under the old boss, drone strikes under the new boss.
Makes me sick watching his smug face bobble-heading and spewing garbage like all the rest. I had to turn it off.
This guy is an exemplar of the whole Obama admin - inexperienced young foul-mouthed frat boys put in management positions without the first clue or one iota of experience.
So, yeah. Not gonna watch some little pisher mansplain Obama to me.
God, for some reason, Bill Simmons has brought him onto his new website. Idiot frat boy is right. And the worst part is how smart these fuckers that trail in Obama's wake think they are. Combined with the media gushing because OMG OBAMA it's a case of, "Never has so much adulation and respect been given to a group of people less deserving of it."
I mean, I still like Simmons' sports based stuff enough to avoid his recent and increasingly heavy handed jaunts into politics, but if TheRinger because Deadspin 2.0- complete with the progressivism- I am done.
I have to work with these people every. day. They have succeeded admirably in decimating a high-functioning, efficient team because of their "feelz" and the need to lift their legs and piss on everything in sight. They're also spending millions of $$ (taxpayer) on gutting and re-constructing a building that is about 6 years old. I have yet to meet a FOO that is worth a damn.
Also, feminists should be appalled at the rampant sexism and litigatable (WTF is the word I'm looking for?) bullshit that happens in the bureaucracy under this President, whom they love and worship so much.
Presidential Kneepads
Acceptable band name.
If I were ever elected President, that would be the new name of the White House Press Pool.
The press has been giving Obama an nine-year blowjob since he gave that DMC speech all those years ago. Not likely that it stops when he retires from office either.
It's like being in a Dante's inferno of progressive bootlicking.
Who will wear the kneepads when Hillary's our Top Woman?
Huma?
This is why there are no libertarian men
Obama hasn't done jack shit for women ("free" birth control? I'm guessing most women who signed up for insurance via Obamacare are not taking advantage of that part). Given the cronies that he has around him, and their attitudes toward women, he probably secretly hates us.
I don't know how secret it is- look at all the women in his administration that he has thrown under the bus.
Considering Simmons's background (Poli Sci major), how Grantland turned out (Salon with a sports section), and the cultural imperative among sportswriters to go even fuller leftard as time goes on, I would bet on the trend continuing.
It's a shame. I started reading Simmons when he got his ESPN Page 2 column back in the day and have liked most of what he's written, but he becoming a bigger and bigger douche as time goes on.
Maybe, but at least there is a small chance that Simmons may become slightly more reasonable once he gets away from Darth Mouse's evil spell.
Heck, Jason Whitlock says something intelligent once in a while now. Given that, anything is possible.
No kidding about the ever further leftward drift among sportswriters, which is how we ended up hearing some laughably idiotic gun control boostering from Jason LaCanfora (who sucks ass anyway). In case you missed it, he was babbling about how we have to stop allowing people to buy "machine guns". Then, after being ridiculed for his ignorance of the fact that machine guns have been tightly regulated since 1934, he spouted some horseshit that saying that an AR isn't a machine gun is "NRA propaganda".
I believe in this case it is Progsplain.

The only way those speeches soar is if you print them up and make paper airplanes out of the paper.
From the headline on this i'm assuming it's 20 minutes of comedy gold and that my sides and face will hurt from the laughter watching this will force from me.
However, after reading the contents I'm now afraid the writer of this article is l actually serious?

Obama's former speech writer.
What, was Goebbels' grandson too busy?
why he now supports Hillary after attacking her in 2008
Because like all Ruling Party apparatchiki, he is utterly devoid of moral principles.

Obviously, Reason isn't aware that Obama has higher approval ratings than any recent president at this point in his presidency. Clearly he's a top tier Top Man.
So you're saying that the percentage of idiots in our population has expanded?
No, Just as Obama was like sunlight to Bush's night, so are Hillary, Trump, and Bernie a solar eclipse to Obama's moonlit night.
You can always get worse, and the three candidates are living proof. Well, two are worse. Trump is so bizarre that he'd at least provide plenty of entertainment.
Think of it this way; the legacy media won't let The Donald get away with anything. His entire Presidency would be one huge media anal examination. Her Imperial Majesty Hillary I has been given a pass by the legacy media since 1992, and there's no reason to think that wouldn't continue if she was sitting in the Imperial Mansion.
Hillary is far worse than Obama. Bernie's economic ideas are basically the same as Obama's, but I'm not sure the old man would do too much harm with a GOP congress. Trump is Trump, whatever that is, you get an unknown there. He could be even worse than Obama, or better, or worse on some things and better on others. Hillary is a complete package of worst on everything. And what is even more terrifying is that you have a GOP congress who will go along with most of what Hillary wants, whereas they would probably be a lot more reluctant to do with Trump or Bernie.
Bernie's economic ideas are basically the same as Obama's,
The most idiotic thing one of you Peanuts has ever said.
Obama is pro-trade, Bernie is a protectionist. Obama is for the private insurer based ACA, Bernie is for single-payer. Obama cut taxes as 30% of his stimulus - Bernie opposed it. Obama is beloved by non-wingnut capitalists (Silicon Valley) - they can't stand Bernie.
I realize your head is soft from staying on this board 24/7 but try to get outside your bubble.
Obama is pro-trade
An administration that has imposed a record number of regulations impairing trade within the US cannot be called "pro-trade".
When the TPP passes it will be the largest free trade agreement in history.
I know that hurts you.
Pay your bet, assnugget.
There's a difference between free trade and cronyism on a global scale, but progs like you don't understand things beyond a nursery school level.
Once again, dipshit displays his ignorance of truly free trade, which can be unilaterally impleneted by just dropping tariffs, at immense domestic gain and annoyance to dem dar furriners.
An administration that has imposed a record number of regulations impairing trade within the US cannot be called "pro-trade".
Hey, shreektard, you give up on your AddictionMyth sock? Bloop Boink Derp!
Remember in '08 Obama agreed with Hillary that we should re-open NAFTA.
Austan Goolsbee had to be sent to Canada to tell them that was just a lie for Ohio.
So, maybe Obama is pro-trade but he was just as willing as Trump to lie about an issue.
Also, about saving people $2,500, too. Trump and Obama; both scam Americans out of money.
As for whether Obama lived up to the speeches this slimy little asshole wrote for him, of course not! The motherfucker has signed extensions of the PATRIOT act on multiple occasions.

Well, Obama certainly has brought the goods on tolerance and racial healing:
Sara Farsakh created quite a stir last month when she and her friends filed a lawsuit against a California restaurant, Urth Caffe in Laguna Beach, claiming the establishment discriminated against them because they're Muslims.
But after their lawsuit was filed, Urth Caffe indicated it planned on countersuing ? and it has made good on that promise.
Attorney David Yerushalmi of the American Freedom Law Center, which represents Urth Caffe, told LawNewz the co-owner of the restaurant, Jilla Berkman, is Muslim and many of her customers are Muslim or Arab.
"This lawsuit claiming religious discrimination is a fraud and a hoax on the courts and the media," Yershalmi told LawNewz in a statement. "It is nothing short of an abuse of process to extort public apologies and other accommodations from my client, Urth Caffe."
http://www.theblaze.com/storie.....ve-turned/
Lost part of comment:
Just as with the fake gay hate cake in Austin (actually made by a gay person), these geniuses managed to file a fake Muslim hate lawsuit against a Muslim.
In Austin, it was a large company that settled quickly to get it behind them. Hopefully Urth Caffe will take it all the way to trial.
Pretty sure Whole Foods went after the guy and he's the one who backed down and apologized. At the point, it's not worth it for WF to pursue the matter. They don't need to try to wrong blood form a stone.
wrong blood form a stone
Irregardless, you DO need to tow the lion more better grammarwise.
sometimes the only pleasure you have is to see your enemies driven before you.
Oh boy...starts right off with some bullshit about how Obama believes in civil liberties. That's good derp.
Thank you for reinforcing my decision to skip the video.
It's a good video if only because it's the first time the interviewer does a good job pressing him at certain points. It's the most hostile interview he's probably ever had.
It's the most hostile interview he's probably ever had.
If he didn't end up curled up on the floor in a fetal position begging for his mommy, a binky, and a "safe space" by the end it wasn't hostile enough.
I like it!
'Hard' Libertarianism: If they aren't screaming 'Remember the NAP!' at the end, then you aren't getting your point across.
I can appreciate that, but I hang out at Reason to cut down on the derp I am exposed to on a daily basis. This seemed counterproductive to that end. The only satisfying conclusion would be for the interviewee to break down and admit that Obama sucked and was a failure at almost every level. However, the level of sociopathy required to exist in a modern DC ecosystem has made that conclusion a statistical impossibility. Therefore I find the value in its consumption extremely limited.
Look, Obama had no choice but to erode civil liberties because those Rethuglikkkans just wouldn't let him govern.
He says this about Guantanamo before he is pressed and claims that Obama probably didn't have Democratic support, either.
Yeah, every word out of this guy's mouth is exactly what I would expect someone to say who ever wanted to work in Washington politics again. Ever again.
What's next?
Maybe a low-end, used car salesman?
An ambulance chasing lawyer?
I'm trying to think of someone people might trust less than one of Obama's former speech writers, and I'm drawing a blank.
A back alley abortionist, maybe?
If I were one of Obama's former speech writers, and I was looking for a job? On my resume, for when I was working as Obama's speech writer, I'd just tell potential employers that I was in jail instead.
Naw, put in that you were a ghostwriter with a non-disclosure agreement.
A back alley abortionist is just meeting demand of customers in a voluntary transaction. He/she shouldn't be compared to someone who simply leeches off a system predicated upon violence.
Abortion Is violence!
*ducks
If I were one of Obama's former speech writers, and I was looking for a job? On my resume, for when I was working as Obama's speech writer, I'd just tell potential employers that I was in jail instead.
"I was the piano player in a whore house."
Always go with the classics.
Fun fact: Some whore house pianists became very successful
I could never stand the sound of Obama's voice. So really, I have no idea if he included anything in his blather that he lived up to.
He certainly didn't live up to his oath of office.
He sounds like an utter moron every time he speaks.
Maybe these weren't part of an actual speech, but I clearly remember them all.
Well, he missed on that part about energy prices necessarily skyrocketing. He missed on the part about the seas receding, sea levels are about the same as they were 7 years ago. He missed on that part about Guantanamo being closed. He missed on that part about withdrawing all the troops from Iraq. There must be a lot more. Are there any promises he didn't miss on? Something about expanding the state and executive power?
Are there any promises he didn't miss on?
Every OCare promise has been broken, as far as I know.
Also transparency.
The whole thing that symbolizes Obama for me was when he was campaigning on promises to undo a lot of the worst excesses of the Bush admin WoT and Bush said in a speech that if Obama knew what he knew he wouldn't be so quick to criticize. Obama scoffed at the idea that he didn't know as much as Bush - as a Senator, he got the same intelligence reports the President got. Once he became President, Obama found out real quick how handy the "if you knew what I knew" excuse was and contiued right on with the same policies. But he never apologized to Bush, never admitted he was wrong to suggest he knew everything there was to know. And that's his whole administration in a nutshell - they have every confidence they know it all no matter how easily demonstrated it is they don't know a thing. As if somehow they're all working out of a mis-printed dictionary that has mistakenly swapped the definitions of "hubris" and "humility".
Why anyone expected even token honesty from a politician who climbed out of the gutters of the Chicago machine, I'll never know.
I worked on the project to close GUITMO. And what happened was the Obama people came in thinking that the people down there were all innocent victims or easily to convict in federal court and it was going to be no problem to release them or try them and shut the place down. They quickly found out the corner Bush had painted himself into. The people there were for the most part very dangerous but the evidence against them was likely not going to be admissible in federal court. It took about a month for them to finally give up and start thinking of ways to delay and hope everyone forgot about the promise to shut the place down.
Or, the short version, Obama criticized Bush for a bunch of different shit and then proceeded to do the same shit but worse.
See:
Transparency
Executive overreach
Debt spending
etc
Well the first 10 seconds aren't promising.
"The Comic-Con of politics". This is an accurate description.
Same as the rest of the 18 minutes and 37 seconds.
A liar who is paid to lie for a liar.
What an interesting person.
Jon Favreau? He must have been between Iron Man movies.
Almost 19 minutes of obsequious ass kissing and reality denying? No thanks.
More like salad tossing.
"He was going to close [Gitmo] but Congress wouldn't let him"
Funny how "congress not letting him" hasn't been much of an impediment to other policies.
Constitutionally speaking, Obama could remove all military personnel without a problem, even if Congress continues to earmark funds for Guantanamo. Let Congress provide all staff and personnel.
Interesting. Order the soldiers at Gitmo to release the prisoners, and open the gates to Cuba for them to leave. A kind of reverse Mariel.
Into the mine field?
I wouldn't trust them with explosives immediately after being released from there.
Good point.
Perhaps launch them over the minefield with a trebuchet?
Yeah. The congress that was D for two years under Obama.
Shhh... Shhh... Shhhhhh.
He temporarily misplaced his pen and his phone whenever the subject of Gitmo came up.
He's so dreamy. How dare you doubt his word.
Does teeth doe!
Obama was a constitutional law instructor, not professor. To be a professor, you need scholarly writing, not community organizing,
Actually, the course he lectured for wasn't on the constitution.
A consistency that he's carried through the last 8 years.
At about 11:55 in the video the scum is pressed on the surveillance state, and he stumbles for a moment before bringing up how there needs to be judicial oversight. You can see him holding back his smug smile as he says that. Completely disingenuous.
We have judicial oversight. It is called the FISA court and it has if I am not mistaken turned down the FBI one time during its entire existence. No only is he a lying douche bag, but also he makes up for it by being ignorant.
The guy makes Seth Macfarlane seem humble. Ugh.
I could forgive that if he had anything to be cocky about. What I hate about these people most is that they have done absolutely nothing to justify being smug.
So he actually is his character in PCU grown up. Leave it to a lefty to take a precautionary satirical tale and turn it into an instruction manual.
It should be pointed out that this is one of the shit bags who got on Charlie Rose last spring and laughed about writing the speech where Obama said if you like your insurance you can keep it. They knew that was a lie and just it was so funny that Obama told it.
This guy is complete and total scum.
This guy is complete and total scum.
A prereq to working with D.C. politicos.
Pretty much. And that is true for both sides not just Democrats.
So Jonah Ryan is real, huh? Only without a Richard to quietly, accidentally, occasionally force some humility on him.
"Richard T. Splett. Actually, i don't know why i said the 'T.' - my middle name's John."
I'm guessing there are more than a few Jonads wandering around the West Wing.
"The Cloud Botherer"
If only he would shoot himself in the foot.
After watching a few minutes, I would say that this person feels he's good at weaseling out of answering questions.
That's what separates us from the animals.
Yes, very good, you've seen at least one episode of The Simpsons.
http://pagesix.com/2016/06/26/.....car-crash/
Speaking of shit bags. He cares so much about the climate he drives a car that runs on the blood of polar bears. And nothing says "responsible and serious adult" like street racing.
Do as they say, not as they do, peasant.
Which one is he? The governor or the TV host? I can't keep my Cuomos straight. They're like the Skarsgaards of politics.
The TV host.
They are worse than the Kardasians. At least some of the Kardasians are easy on the eyes.
Andy is the shitbag governer, Chris is the shitbag TV personality.
But a friend of the anchor insisted Cuomo never actually raced the car and was just goofing around for photos before he clumsily cracked his radiator by hitting a parked German import.
Honestly, this explanation makes far more sense. Especially because the yentas that populate the Hamptons likely think that any car going in excess of 30 MPH or that has a loud exhaust is "racing."
In fairness, you are probably right.
Of course, to a Climate Justice Warrior, simply owning those cars is a crime.
I think its notable that Obama's "Mind Readers" are mostly people who have no experience in policy whatsoever
I think it makes more sense when you realize that its all for show.
I think its notable that Obama's "Mind Readers" are mostly people who have no experience in policy whatsoever
That's precisely they're so desirable as Obama's Mind-readers. They can work in tweet-worthy sound bites.
That much was obvious even before he actually took office, with the fake columns on stage when he made his convention speech and the logo for the nonexistent "Office of the President-Elect" his people plastered all over podiums.
A rep for Cuomo didn't comment. Either way, his love for hot wheels runs in the family. Older bro Gov. Andrew Cuomo reportedly owns cars including a '68 Pontiac GTO and a '75 Corvette.
What a fucking loser. I wouldn't buy a 75 corvette as a parts car.
Come one Brooks, you don't want to feel the exciting of having a 350 small block Chevy detuned to produce a blistering 180 horsepower?
It is funny as shit. These people have tons of money. And they choose to buy a 75 corvette. What do you want to bet it has white vinyl interior and T-Tops? Andrew likes to put his throw back NY Jets Joe Klecko wife beater and cruise with the fellas now and then I guess.
Money can't buy class.
put an LS3 in it.
I like the looks of the mid 70s corvette. They were like all American cars then destroyed by the pollution controls. A resto mod mid 70s C3 corvette with a new vet motor and transmission with upgraded suspension and brakes would be a cool car. It would, however, cost a fortune and never be worth what it would cost to make.
------A rep for Cuomo didn't comment. Either way, his love for hot wheels runs in the family. Older bro Gov. Andrew Cuomo reportedly owns cars including a '68 Pontiac GTO and a '75 Corvette.-------
a '75 Corvette is a perfect car for a Cuomo. It pretends it's a muscle car, but deep down inside, it's just a weenie mobile with the ride comfort of an extra-angry bucking horse. In a car that a person would buy who wants a muscle car, but knows NOTHING about cars, so he's robbed blind.
I would compare it to an early 80's Mustang, but at least those Mustangs never claimed to be anything but putt-putts.
That is not fair to the Fox body Mustang. They were putt putts out of the factory but I have seen a lot more insanely modified and fast fox body Mustangs than I have ever seen modified and fast 75 corvettes.
Anyway, i thought he did a good job on Elf but i guess he is a dick.
*golf clap*
GrandMao Pantsuit Two?
Nothing like a double wide pantsuit to hide that unsightly frumpy lumpy statist blubber. Extra wide and extra long to hide the cankles too.
So? Do they think the Brits can't just leave anyway without invoking any of their bullshit?
Of course they can. What is Germany going to do? Military inter... oh wait, that's right, UK has a real army and nukes. I guess that's not happening.
I say again, and it can't be said loudly enough, if you belong to a club and that club won't allow you to leave, the club needs you more than you need it.
Welcome to the Hotel California.
http://www.thegatewaypundit.co.....t-attacks/
This is LA, where is a good gang of leather wearing gay men or butch lesbians to beat this woman down. Seriously, make this shit a contact sport.
Seriously, make this shit a contact sport.
Sometimes I think maybe we're too "civilized" for our own good.
Violence is bad I know. But tell me you wouldn't laugh your ass off if some gay guy or gal showed up in the film and just beat the shit out of her. Not hurt her or kill her, just kick the shit out of her and remind her that maybe she ought to shut her mouth once in a while.
I would laugh. Ok, I admitted it.
Also, what's with that nail polish? Is that allowed under Shariah? Maybe after they deport her, she'll get stoned for that shit. Poetic justice.
It is all so phony. She is wearing a Burka but then has nail polish on. Yeah, that makes sense. The Burka is just her way of saying fuck you to the rest of us. It has nothing to do with her religion.
Obama says she was just misunderstood. Stop with your hate speech, John. This is all your fault. You and Trump, that is.
Ah. More threats of workplace violence.
I can safely say this: Obama has met my expectations.
Dumber than Carter; Dirtier than Nixon.
I thought that was Hillary's slogan this week.
Carter at least began the deregulation wave by the end of his term. Has Obama done anything for the cause of liberty?
...given us all a solid target to complain about?
The aqueduct?
*thinks*
He made all school bathrooms unisex.
Has Obama done anything for the cause of liberty?
Are you kidding? He's made a lot of progress on two of the three major libertarian goals:
(1) Gay marriage.
(2) Open borders (Well, at least until the obstructionist Supreme Court stopped him).
Granted, he hasn't done dick on weed, but hey, two out of three is pretty good in this business.
Can't you just fucking smell the liberty?
Isn't his progress on gay marriage a mixed bag though? Because unless recognition of gay marriage is coupled with recognition of private property rights, then it's hardly a net gain for civil liberties.
Oh, I missed the joke. Fuck.
put an LS3 in it.
If I wanted a Corvette with a big motor. shitty suspension and no brakes,, I'd get a '62.
Or a mid year big block. Of course you would pay through the nose for that.
RE: Has Obama Lived Up to His Soaring Campaign Speeches? We Asked His Former Chief Speechwriter
As we all know Dear Leader's speeches have always been truthful, kind, full of hope and has created positive change.
One only has to look at the beneficial Obamacare.
Dear Leader said the unwashed masses could keep their doctor.
Dear Leader said the unwashed masses' premiums would not go up
Dear Leader said Obamacare would be superior to anything in the private sector.
I could go on about what he said about his wise and benign policies regarding surveillence, the IRS, pollution, cronyism, taxation etc.
But that would be a waste of time.
We all know what kind of administration he has run and all the wise decisions that has made our country stronger,
our little people wealthier and more peaceful now than any other time in US history.
It will be indeed a tragedy when he leaves the White House Dascha.
My pillow will be stained with my tears as I weep softly on it when he is gone into private life and there is no more hope and change in our meaningless lives.
"My pillow will be stained with my tears as I weep softly on it when he is gone into private life and there is no more hope and change in our meaningless lives."
I'm sure he'll be making public appearances at every opportunity. Someone will probably make a blockbuster movie about him, too. Hell, even after he's dead, the government will be finding shit to name after him - highways, public libraries, parks, city boulevards...
So don't worry! The Left and their media cohorts won't let you live another day without hearing his name in some form.

13:50.....and yet, I am voting for Hillary.
What a fucking piece of shit this douce-bag is.
Favreau sure likes to hint that as a 'constitutional scholar' whatever Obama does is inherently constitutional. I don't think Obama's knowledge of the constitution (and political systems) has been used to follow the constitution, but instead to manipulate and contort it to his own ends.
He studies the Constitution like an oncologist studies cancer.
It's probably a little easier to write speeches when they don't have to be grounded in reality.
This is the definition of a 'wiz kid'?
/face palm.
Is 'engenderate' even a word?
I love the 'the President recognizes over-classification is a problem' as if it's an excuse for him, you know, engaging in it. I don't accept his spin on this. The President has a choice and he chose to do what he did. Afterall, he's shown he's willing to issue executive orders to get what he wants and not necessarily what the majority of Americans want.
Very, very sure Hillary did something 'very, very illegal' with her emails, but I'm gonna support her anyway because 'Obama's legacy'! Whatever that is.
/another face palm.
Yeh. I'm gonna stick with 'Obama is no orator'.

Derp = 'golly, he's a constitutional law professor...'
He professes the communist constitution, not the US Constitution.
