Is Unregulated Biohacking the Future of Science?
The $140 Mail-Order CRISPR Kit
"Are people dying and suffering needlessly because of all these committees and all these rules?" asks Josiah Zayner, a scientist, biohacker, and founder of the biotech company The Odin, which supplies low-cost CRISPR kits for the consumer market. "And what if people just say, 'F— you, I'm going to do it anyway'? And what if people start getting cured?"
CRISPR is a gene editing system that allows scientists to modify the DNA of organisms ranging from bacteria to plants and fungus to human beings. The Odin sells kits for the the modification of bacteria and yeast.
Reason TV visited Zayner in his garage lab to discuss the implications and ethics of bringing CRISPR to the masses, why he left a prestigious job in a NASA laboratory to start his own company, how regulation stifles scientific innovation, and why he believes that unregulated, decentralized experimentation will lead to the some the next great scientific breakthroughs.

Look, if people can just cure themselves without permission, that's like the same as murder, right? I mean, lock these people up before they do more things without permission. One day they're curing themselves of a chronic condition without permission, and the next thing you know, they've got a secret lair under a volcano and they have sharks with freaking laser beams! We have to save the children!

I'm more interested in gene editing yeast to make beer and pizza taste better or have more variety of flavor profiles I should say
I was thinking the same thing. Saison yeast would be good for modifying, imo.
CRISPR and homebrew... I want a ale yeast that handles the heat better so my beer doesn't go all banana. Homebrew is such a pita in south florida because of the temperature problem. One of the reasons I stopped doing it because I am to cheap to keep the house in the proper temp range or build a large cold box for carboys to ferment in. I can't even get a decent cider going because the yeasts cant handle the high 70's. So that's what I would want, a yeast that handles a higher temperature range for fermentation that doesn't offput those banana flavored compounds.
you're too cheap to buy a used chest freezer and a temp controller? That's seriously cheap.
RE: Is Unregulated Biohacking the Future of Science
Our socialist slavers that oppress us cannot tolerate the market to find cures for those who are dying.
Only The State should be allowed to find cures for cancer, diabetes, AIDS, etc.
We all know that bureaucrats, politicians and their cronies are much more capable finding cures for diseases than any group of doctors or scientists.
Just look how many cures the CDC has produced after decades of being in existence and the billions of tax dollars we have given them.
What more needs to be said?

Cool!
*heads down to his basement to create more anti-bacterial/anti-viral resistant diseases*
The idea that some garage scientist is going to be curing anyone of anything is pretty retarded. Not saying it isn't possible, but how many Geneticists need to do that kind of work out in their garage instead of an actual laboratory with actual medical grade equipment? The mad kind of scientist, that's who.
Not that I'm really against selling these to the public, since by-and-large the public will be too stupid to be dangerous with it. Maybe this isn't what I think it is though.
I left my office-job and now I am getting paid 98 usd hourly. How? I work over internet! My old work was making me miserable, so I was forced to try something different, 2 years after...I can say my life is changed-completely for the better! Check it out what i do...

It is irresponsible to cell CRISPR "kits" to the general public (though I suspect the CRISPR {Cas 9 ?} complex is not fully functional or operational) when the global scientific community is still debating ethical guidelines for its use (with some nations already imposing limits on germline experimentation, etc.). What self-imposed limits will such DIY bio-hackers place on themselves and their "experiments"? So, what if a bio-hacker decides to alter a bacterium (in his garage no less) and it escapes into the wild (which it is likely to do)? Although it is likely to be out-competed by more robust wild-type species, there is a chance its genomic alteration could confer favorable (positive) selection on it, allowing it to out-compete and even replace an existing species (that other life forms depend on or have adapted to)...Suppose a bio-hacker decides to create his own "gene drive" (using a convenient vector) which then propagates successfully throughout a local food web and which then triggers a cascade of unintentional ecological alterations...maybe benign, maybe not. Ecosystem disruption is likely to result sooner or later...There is a reason scientific bodies and consortia have ethical rules and standards. Rogue bio-hackers at the very least will only cause headaches, and, at the very worst, could cause irreparable ecological harm.
By the way, let's put an end to the "regulations stifle innovation" crap...the phrase is vague and meaningless..a CLEAR and COMPREHENSIBLE regulatory framework encourages creativity and innovation by reducing regulatory complexity and encouraging new (small/startup) entries into a market place (or sector) which may have formerly been dominated by a one or two big players (but subsequently broken up, for example, by pro-competitive anti-trust laws).
before I looked at the draft saying $9453 , I have faith that my mother in law woz like truley erning money part time at there computar. . there mums best friend haz done this 4 less than 14 months and just repayed the dept on their apartment and purchased a brand new Honda . read here .....
