Don't Fear the Refugees
Americans are skeptical and afraid of allowing Middle East refugees into this country. Should they be?
Two deadly attacks, one in Paris, France, another in San Bernardino, California, have rattled the American people. They are skeptical and afraid of allowing refugees from the Middle East into this country.
GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has fed the fear with vivid descriptions of a secret invasion.
"But when I look at these people, the migration, to so many young, strong men. We're going to take them? It could be the all-time great — it probably isn't. But it could be the all-time great Trojan Horse," Trump told Fox News' Brett Baeir in October.
Many Americans are afraid. 51% of voters oppose allowing Syrian refugees into the United States, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll. The fear persists even though we now know the attackers in Paris and San Bernardino weren't refugees. It's the belief that we are better safe than sorry.
But how many refugees are actually "young, strong men"? And what exactly is the government's vetting process? As it turns out, most of that information is public:
A refugee begins his or her journey to America in a different country. This is opposed to an asylee, who must physically come to the U.S. in order to seek asylum.
The first agency most refugees will encounter is the United Nations High Refugee Commissioner, which provides health, education, and other services to refugees around the world and is heavily involved in helping refugees transition out of temporary camps into more permanent homes.
The U.S. State Dept. describes the UNHRC as the "initial filter." The small number of cases that pass through this filter then conduct an interview at a Resettlement Support Center contracted by the government.
They then face scrutiny by the Department of Homeland Security, which reviews the compiled information and conducts its own interviews with the potential refugees and then tries to corroborate the details with the help of various other intelligence and military agencies, including the FBI and the Defense Department, both of which run separate background checks.
A little more than 50 percent of the refugees that have made it this far pass this multiple agency screening process.
Syrian Refugees go through an additional layer of screening called the Syria Enhanced Review.
Next, there's a health screening to check for any communicable diseases, and then cultural orientation classes to give refugees an idea of what to expect in America.
Finally, there's one more round of security checks to verify that no new information was unearthed before the refugee may finally board a plane to the United States.
Upon arrival, a Customs and Border Patrol agent will check the paperwork to verify that the refugee is the person she claims to be before releasing her to a volunteer agency like Voice of the Refugees.
The entire process takes an average of 18 to 24 months.
Half the Syrian refugees taken into the U.S. so far have been children, and another quarter are older than 60. Only 2 percent are single males of combat age.

"The Alberta Government would be well advised if it passed legislation making it impossible for Japanese and Chinese to vote in this province. Make these yellow men realise that they are not going to have any influence on our affairs."
Lethbridge Herald, 1907
"Rather a neat one was slipped over the confiding foreign settlements [immigrant communities] of the north end [of Winnipeg, after the 1919 general strike]. Word was passed around that several cars of fruit were spoiling at the Canadian Pacific Railway freight sheds and would be handed out free. A great swarm of aliens took advantage of this free lunch, but twenty-five suspects among them were promptly arrested and are now in jail. Among these is a colored Methodist person, whose appetite for watermelon could not be resisted."
From the German news, it now appears that the media has the opposite problem: don't report anything bad done by foreigners, because our own population is untrustworthy and dangerous.
Refugees are always extremely dangerous people, especially when allowed to have contact with indigenous individuals of the opposite sex in places where they can insidiously seduce them; but our own population is certainly untrustworthy and dangerous (and far more so than the refugees), and most particularly so on the Internet, where the baser human instincts were, at least until fairly recent times, given license to "express" themselves, even through criminally deadpan "parody," sometimes under the absurd shield of so-called "constitutional principles." Fortunately we have made some progress dealing with this terrible issue, at least in New York: see the documentation of America's leading criminal "satire" case at:
http://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
Good point. Untrustworthy goes both ways. Even the founders "distrusted" the people enough to protect liberty over pure democracy.
But in this case, the media is attempting to repress information.
Maybe we don't need to bring up their motives at all. the action by itself says something.
Hey Zach Weissmueller, do you wear a seatbelt in cars because you are skeptical and afraid, or because it is the prudent thing to do?
Just curious.
I'm so bored with all these asshats whose vocabulary is limited to "fear" and "afraid".
Concerned, cautious, careful, conscientiousness . . . all MORE accurate than "afraid".
Islam is a totalitarian ideology, cloaked in robes of religion to present itself as honorable to an unsuspecting world. We have heard imams (Muslim clerics) who describe Islam as: "The Religion of Peace." Islam is in truth a demonically influenced regime of warlords, whose goal is world dominance.
The word Islam means submission. In this article I will take passages straight from the Qur'an which clearly show that Islam has nothing to do with peace. It has everything to do with beheading, raping, pillaging, and dominating the entire world. To those who practice Islam and are jihadists (the Qur'an commands this) their god Allah promises great rewards awaiting those who give their lives while fighting infidels.
Who are the infidels? This term means anyone who does not believe the words of their prophet, Muhammad. In fact, the Muslims in name only are hated by the Muslims who are obedient to the words in the Qur'an. Are you beginning to understand why the so-called moderate Muslims do not speak out against the terror? They are fearful for their own lives!
Religion of peace? What BS.
From the Koran
Koran 2:191 "Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them."
Koran 3:28 "Moslems must not take the infidels as friends."
Koran 3:85 "Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable."
Koran 5:33 "Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticise Islam."
Koran 8:12 "Terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur'an."
Koran 8:60 "Moslems must muster all weapons to terrorize the infidels."
Koran 8:65 "The unbelievers are stupid; urge the Moslems to fight them."
Koran 9:5 "When opportunity arises kill the infidels wherever you catch them."
Koran 9:29 "Fight those people of the Book (Jews and Christians) who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, do not refrain from what has been prohibited by Allah and His Rasool and do not embrace the religion of truth (Islam), until they pay the Halal Certification Tax (protection tax or jizya) with their own hands and feel themselves subdued."
Koran 9:30 "The Jews and Christians are perverts; fight them."
Koran 9:123 "Make war on the infidels living in your neighbourhood."
Koran 22:19 "Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies."
Koran 47:4 "Do not hanker for peace with infidels; behead them when you catch them."
As a Christian, protestent and who's theological bent is Calvinist, my question is, have you actually read the koran or are you doing what most unbelievers and pseudo christians do and copy paste parts of the works (unbelievers and many professing christians do this to the bible) in order to make a point without taking the whole into context?
Islam is a false religion, just like all other false religions they proclaim man's work and obedience in order to find favor with God to be saved from their sins. It is a work's based religion, not one of faith alone through grace alone. However, with that said, to copy paste verses, or parts of verses out of context brings more harm to the argument than it proves. The koran is heavily influenced by the Torah, we can see a lot of the old testament through out the writings
How do you take these verses from...(these are just two)
2.47 O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds.
2.62 Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans [before Prophet Muhammad] - those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
Please compare the number of deaths resulting from automobile accidents as opposed to those from 'immigrants'.
Just curious.
Like, per capita? That might not come out the way you want it to.
Agreed. And why set the bar so high as deaths? Why not count lesser crimes of illegal immigrants along with non-fatal but injurious accidents in automobile crashes? Seatbelts can make the difference between no injury at all and a broken bone, for instance.
Seems too much like a straw man to set the bar so high as deaths.
Yes, because the entire gist of my comment was about fatalities and only fatalities.
Just willfully obtuse.
Logical Fallacy, you moron.
How does the number of automobile deaths relate at all? People use autos after weighing the risks against the benefits. Apparently they believe the large benefits are worth the risk. They've weighed the benefits of allowing Middle Eastern refugees (are there any?) and decided it's not worth the risk. So what's your point?
Needs more cowbell.
Uh huh. Widows and orphans.
http://newobserveronline.com/m.....attackers/
The best way to fuck over that line of reasoning would be to completely open unlimited refugee slots, to orphans under the age of 7 (if family later shows up to claim them, the status can be rescinded). Given that the concern is with ideas rather than genes, it shouldn't present a meaningful terror problem.
Opposing refugees at this time is not about fear its about caution and no matter how you sugar coat the process we do not trust our government to actually follow through with the process or to even do it correctly in the first place. Neither length of time nor number of steps used is proof of confidence in workmanship.
The woman that participated in the San Bernardino massacre was fully vetted by the government. How did that work out?
We have an utter disaster of an immigration system, no way to vet the people applying for entry, no way keep track of the people who do manage to make it into the country, and a terrorist adversary from the same region and religion as these people, who have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to utilize civilian populations to their advantage.
But yeah, nothing to worry about here. Open borders are the answer.
The funny thing is, nobody -- not even Trump -- is saying that we should bar entry forever. Just until we get our own shit together. If anything, he's blaming our own incompetence and inability to establish a rational immigration system, not the refugees.
Regardless of how you feel about Trump and his campaign, that is an eminently reasonable position right now.
"The funny thing is, nobody -- not even Trump -- is saying that we should bar entry forever."
Well, actually, I'm saying exactly that. Mass immigration of Muslims into Europe has been a total shitshow since before there was ever a war in Syria. We've done okay with them here, but that's mostly because they have to come by plane. There's honestly no logically coherent reason for us to import Muslims. Just feels from weak-minded fools.
There are apparently not enough people in this hemisphere who want to immigrate.
This is just the whole "young, strong negro men are snorting cocaine and raping white women" meme, which started the drug war, all over again. Nothing gets the population worked up to increase the power of the state like dark penises.
Oh bullshit. Total bullshit.
I don't care if these refugees are 100% women. We don't have the ability to safely get these people into the country, we can't afford to take care of them once they get here, and we don't owe them anything.
And it's not increasing 'state power' to want the government to have a handle on the immigration system before we admit hundreds of thousands of destitute people from a part of the world that is generally unfriendly towards our civilization. It's literally one of the most basic functions of government.
Or even simply not paying the migrants to migrate would be start. Open the border all day long, but as long as the immigrants are being paid to breed and reside in the host country, there will be problems with assimilation and criminality. Not to mention the inherent unfairness of being taxed to the point where the indigenous Germans can't afford to have 3 children because they're paying for Abdullah's 9 children. Intended or not, it's population replacement at best and an invasion at worst, though in this case the invaders come armed with the German state's tax apparatus.
Just abolish government and your problems are solved. Everyone protects themselves (or does so in a voluntary fashion).
Boom, no mass crime! An armed society is very polite indeed.
Quran (8:57) ? "If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember." I am reminded of the videos with beheadings that are posted for all to see. They love to put fear in the hearts of all infidels. "
Quran (9:5) ? "So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captive and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them." (Clearly, these words show that the only way to escape death is to convert to Islam.)
Quran (9:29) ? "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." (People of the Book refers to Christians and Jews.)
Oh, noes, they have bigger penises too:
http://klaq.com/worldwide-peni.....-this-a-m/
http://metro.co.uk/2015/02/28/.....d-5083922/
Put that wall up, NOW!!!!
And if you think increasing immigration restrictions does not increase state power, you are just deluded.
What the fuck is up with your penis fixation? How do you even connect those dots?
But please, explain to me how restricting immigration increases state power.
Tell you what though -- I'll grant you your open borders right AFTER we dismantle the welfare state.
If you're so concerned about 'state power', that's really the only logical thing to do. Importing millions of people who'll immediately be put on government assistance will do FAR more to 'increase state power' than restricting immigration will.
Where the hell are you getting this fantasy that immigrants are immediately put on welfare? Refugees get about $1,000 of assistance and then they are on their own. Most of them get to work starting small businesses. Since most of them will work, this increases the tax base (not that I support increased government revenue). They add to the system. Also, evidence shows that increase in immigration leads to the population demanding a tightening of welfare benefits, because they don't want to share the benefits with immigrants.
So stop dressing up your xenophobia as concern about the growth of the welfare state.
What in the ever loving fuck are you talking about? They get free housing and are eligible for full welfare benefits, food stamps, etc. Where do you think these people live when they get here and don't know the language, have any connections, or any resources.
But please, show me some sources that indicate refugees aren't eligible for welfare, and that they 'get to work starting small businesses'. I'd love to be proven wrong.
Stop dressing up your love for the welfare state in fake concern for refugees.
It's not really a meme if they come from a culture that literally (as we see in its purest form with ISIS) says that there are lots of cases where rape is ok and even desirable. They're misogynists, strike 1, and they're supremacists who see rape as a tool for controlling untermensch, which is strike 2.
The rape concerns raised about Hispanic immigrants might fall into the brown scare category (though there are still some cultural proclivities there, I think, but they could be dealt more easily with as they're not actually in favor of it), but not so much the anti-Muslim sentiment.
Yes it's a replay of drug war propaganda. Amazing most people don't see that. It's a new war against muslims and a new war on speech/religion. People will say, "We have no obligation to take them." And of course we don't. Except that we bombed and destabilized their countries and while not fully to blame we have some responsibility to take in legitimate refugees. And if you insist that there are no legitimate refugees then that is just plain un-American. Funny how Obama is the only one willing to say that.
How many millions of German and Japanese refugees were we obligated to take in after we bombed their countries into oblivion?
Why don't the stable and wealthy Islamic republics in the region like the UAE and Saudi Arabia take in these refugees?
This is not a war against speech or religion. This is a simple matter of dealing with reality.
And isn't it amazing, it turned out that high drug use, violence and rape levels among black people was a complete myth... Oh, what's that from the guy in the back? I didn't hear. Maybe I didn't want to hear.
Violence levels correlate with socioeconomic status, not with race. Ever been to a trailer park?
I think the social factors are the dominant factor here. The relevant factors have to be distinguished, and pretending there is no problem with a group is not the appropriate way to deal with bigotry.
Actually, no. It's been shown that's not true. Appalachia, one of the poorest, white-trashiest regions in the U.S. has crime rates well below the national average.
Dark penises get you worked up? Whatever floats your boat.
The immigrants did do a fair amount of mischief in Cologne Germany on New Years eve.
The "Monsters" Unmasked: Cologne Police Admit "Most Of The Attackers Were Refugees"
But of course. "It can't happen here."
I'm originally from CA and have spent time in San Bernardino. The people in the facility that day are just like thousands of average Americans who go to work and go home and live their lives. Those people were actually killed and injured and probably all thought "it won't really happen here."
IT can.
Has reason covered this story at all? It's been all over every other media site. Could it be that open borders aren't the unqualified good some suggest?
To be fair, there will always be evil people among us. What caused this was a government that banned law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves.
Yeah, no. What caused this was the actual criminals who targeted women to molest, rob, grope, and rape.
Now, I'm sure if Germany allowed gun ownership they'd be a different dynamic at play, and while government certainly can be blamed for a many things, the actual criminals are responsible for their own actions.
Quran (8:57) ? "If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember." I am reminded of the videos with beheadings that are posted for all to see. They love to put fear in the hearts of all infidels. "

(People of the Book refers to Christians and Jews.)
You're right, he should have said: "What caused them to be defenseless targets was..."
When there are a thousand people committing crimes in concert, people protecting themselves in any sort of effective fashion is going to look an awful lot like civil war.
And when the rape-y types are large groups of swarthy types the media (Reason included) is guaranteed to declare one side all racist-y.
And?
And?
And it was government policy that brought these criminals to bear on the German people, not the free movement of peoples. They were imported by the German welfare state and would not otherwise be there in anywhere near the numbers they currently are, owing to living first world costs, assimilation difficulties, job skills, and the barred free association rights of the Germans et cetera. Certainly the self-defense and weapons laws made these women an easier target, but the fact that they're in a position to be targeted at all is entirely because of government policy.
This is a very good point.
The screening process might be vigorous, but we're all concerned about how information is stored or handled at the Syrian end.
Having said that, it looks like we're actively picking and choosing who we're letting in. Half of the refugees let in so far are kids (3 year olds don't have criminal records)? Another quarter are old men? Only 2% are "combat ready" young males? Either there's some sort of filtering going on, or the screening process is disqualifying most young Syrian male applicants.
Yes, I should not fear refugees that consist of mostly women and children. It's indeed impractical for terrorists to wait 4 years to infiltrate a nation. But radical Islam is a tricky thing. It think it's best to let in mostly women and children and drop pretense that we're not "discriminating" against applicants. Which we're doing now, for all intents and purposes.
But your children should. Children grow up and Muslim children grow up in the West to be far more radical even than their parents are. Whats more these harmless children grow up without a father, which is the single greatest indicator of future criminality and aggression. Even if every single one of the refugees was a child, you're only delaying the problems by 20 years or so.
youre buying into the propaganda
Ft Hood, Orlando, San Bernadino - ALL children of Muslim immigrants.
But it is "only a small percentage"!
Well when there are a LOT more Muslims the "small percentage" is going to be a LOT bigger too.
We are not going to have a different experience than Europe.
The screening process is security theater. These are failed states the refugees are coming from. You think they can just call up the Hall of Records in Damascus and check them against the Syrian Terrorist Watch list? Fake IDs abound, information is scant and there's really no way to verify the identities, backgrounds and affiliations of most of these people. There are surprisingly few "card-carrying Muslim terrorists."
By some miracle the UN, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, and Customs and Border Patrol, hitherto documented by REASON as inept and corrupt bureaucracies, are suddenly well organized, efficient and trustworthy. Who would have thought this possible?
Open borders are the Festivus miracle that turns libertarians into true believers in government competence.
Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.

Wait seriously, you aren't even go to mention the rape gangs on New Years Eve? I can think of a couple arguments off the top of my head that would support your point in relation to that story, but it's been seven days. The event is the most recent to do with Syrian immigration debate and extremely relevant. Ya'll need to discuss it already.
My city is one that is a major destination for refugees from Iraq and Syria.
You can feel a difference. I just had an instance where a lady in Islamic garb was very nervous about my leashed, small dog sitting in front of a vet's office.
But you also have funny stuff, like the two refugee guys in Walmart, obviously FOB, who took the time to read the warning on the cart about it not being able to be taken off the lot. They were intently reading this warning. I probably should have helped them.
I try to smile more at the refugees. Got a cute one to smile back, too. But...I'm married.
Oh, and on that issue of women? We have a lot of male refugees, too. Maybe they are from Iraq not Syria.
And I read a Yelp review of a kebab place where the male staff just ignored females who wished to order food.
These behaviors will be very, very hard to change.

The problem is that if it's so easy for them to come over, how easy is it for someone that wants to do harm to America to come in?
Also... Why are we taking in refugees if we can't even give up cost of living increases to our veterans and elderly?

Here is an example of a command from their false god:
Quran (2:191-193) ? "And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah [disbelief] is worse than killing?but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah [disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah] and worship is for Allah alone. But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun [the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.]."
Muslim jihadists must obey the words of their book. They fear for their own lives if they do not live as terrorists, because Allah has told them in their book that they should be killed for not obeying. In fact, doubting Allah in the mind of a Muslim is terrible thing. We wonder how they can be so brutal and merciless. It's because they must show their god that they believe him, and that they will bring terror against all infidels and slay them if they do not convert to Islam.
Quran (2:216) ? "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not." (Here we see Allah proclaiming to his subjects that violence is virtuous. It even states that some may find it repulsive, but they must know that their god knows what is good for them.)
I believe that Allah is actually Satan. He fights primarily against Jews and Christians. He commands submission from his followers. Jesus is spoken of in the Qur'an, but it's not the Jesus we know from the Word of God. Jesus ? called Isa, is merely a prophet. It is emphasized that He is not the Son of God. On the roof of the mosque on the Temple Mount are inscribed these Arabic words: "God has no son." That sounds demonic to me.
Quran (3:56) ? "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help."
Quran (3:151) ? "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority". (This speaks of Christians, who say that "God has a Son" is joining companions with Allah).
Quran (4:74) ? "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward." (Unlike early Christian who were led meekly to their slaughter, Muslims are killed in battle for the cause of Allah. This is the basis for today's suicide bombers.)
Quran (4:95) ? "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward." (Here we see Allah stressing that the jihadists will be rewarded, but not those who do not fight for the cause.)
Quran (8:12) ? "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them" These words are clear, and commentary here would be redundant. "
Now you have seen a sampling from the Qur'an of the terror that is commanded by its words. Religion of Peace? Hardly ? more like the Third Reich, meeting in mosques worldwide, and planning the demise of all who will not convert.
So why do we not hear what the Qur'an really says on the news? Why do politicians avoid what is stated in black and white on the pages of this terrifying book? I can only guess that some refuse to believe that a religion could actually be so violent as the jihadists are. They have their heads in the sand, believing that the ones beheading and raping must be a radical faction of the religion of peace. Perhaps others are just plain scared.
Here is a paragraph from President George W. Bush's commencement address to the Air Force Academy, on 3 June 2004, illustrating the New World Order's plan to disguise the real nature of Islam:
"History is once again witnessing a great clash. This is not a clash of civilizations. The civilization of Islam, with its humane traditions of learning and tolerance, has no place for this violent sect of killers and aspiring tyrants. This is not a clash of religions. The faith of Islam teaches moral responsibility that ennobles men and women, and forbids the shedding of innocent blood. Instead, this is a clash of political visions." read source
This is another reason that I believe that Allah and Satan are one and the same. The deception is so blatant and so complete?only the enemy of God could pull this off. Some believe that Islam is in fact demonically influenced, but that Allah is not Satan. Be assured, that I am not saying that the Antichrist will be Islam. I believe that Satan manifests himself in many ways.
Now when you are watching the news and you hear someone speaking about the "radical jihadist" faction of Islam, you will know the truth.
I doubt that you will ever hear the phrase "Religion of Peace" ascribed to Islam, and not think back on the passages you've read here from the Qur'an.
COME LORD JESUS!

Dear mohammedans. This is an example of the mystical sort we want to export Over There. You will find you have a lot in common.
"Americans are skeptical and afraid of allowing Middle East refugees into this country. Should they be?"
Of course they should. First, many are not refugees, but economic migrants. Second, we have more than enough people.
I'm not afraid of the "refugees" (actually morel like invaders, especially in Europe). But then, they don't rape men, do they? I will be concerned with their children after a couple of decades of worship at Salafist mosques, but then I'm old enough that I probably won't be around then anyway. In other words, active terrorists among the invaders may be few -- but it's still an alien invasion that will make conditions of life a lot worse. But preventing that requires controlling the border, and that's against strict libertarian ideology. What are thousands of rape victims to that?
Actually, they do rape men.....a lot.
Leaving aside the issue of the competence of the UN, HSA, INS, etc., performing the "vetting" (and does anyone really trust a UN bureaucrat anyway?) there is the whole issue of the simple lack of reliable records concerning these people. You can't properly vet someone if you have no proof of where he came from, who his associates have been, etc. GIGO. The alleged vetting is a fraud.
And (if anyone cares about the actual law these days), most of these people aren't "refugees"
anyway, as defined by the Refugee Act of 1980. That Act, in 8 U.S.C. ?1101(a)(42), defines a "refugee" as "any person who is outside any country of such person's nationality or, in the case of a person having no nationality, is outside any country in which such person last habitually resided, and who is unable or unwilling to return to, and is unable or unwilling to avail himself or herself of the protection of, that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion." Most of the Syrian "refugees" are in fact economic migrants, and don't properly fall within the refugee process at all.
One of the reasons for concern is that, even half of Democrats suspect that 0b0z0 might knowingly let the worst of the worst in. I mean, they intentionally pickout losers for TSA, do everything possible to cause strife and rioting, short of directly calling for it, etc., etc. So, even Ds hear a pattern through the sand in their ears.
I agre with Reason's main thrust with this, but i think they have gotten the pitch wrong. We can't trust the government to 'vet' the refugees. Such a process is really is an exercise in time wasting and money wasting anyway. Besides there are a far simpler ways for a terrorist to attack America and Americans at home and abroad. The bottom line is that the government is can't protected us from all or even most of the avenues for attack.
If you want to be safe from 'terrorism' and want the government to give you that safety we had better build that wall and make sure it goes all the way around. We should ban traveling outside the US by US citizens so that 'we' can get attacked by them overseas. You know who's really safe from terror? The North Koreans. A country to emulate if you follow the logic through.
If the government can't protect us, maybe we can then consider what this is all worth. Is it worth sacrificing our openness to the tired masses yearning to breathe free in exchange an illusory improvement in safety? Is it worth proving to the world that we are racist, weak and cowardly, running in fright at the imaginary dangers of people feeling for their lives?
As for me, I my main concern is that the Syrians are very good bakers and have a fine tradition in making sweets and cakes. The last round of refugees from the last round of failed American warmongering make excellent Pho and Banh mi sandwiches. Maybe this round of refugees can provide dessert.
I don't really think the ur-statists want to stop terror anyway. When you see how hard they pimp out restrictions on the soap box and cartridge box after attacks (the jury box has already been fairly well subdued), I think they seem them more as a crisitunity to enslave America; a crisitunity one they can easily manufacture by ensuring that genuine counterterrorism efforts are hamstrung by political BS.
Yeah I see this as the unholy union between regulation spewin statist totalitarian and word salad christian totalitarians. One see a pathway towards more government power. The other see a pathway towards religious war. In the case of the latter, the game is transparent. Endlessly accuse muslims of being inherently animinalistic and warlike while advocating for religious war against them. If we are fighting on the christian side of a war with a muslin enemy that is a large fraction of 1.5 billion strong, you can be sure that Christianity supremacy will be everywhere.
The sooner we realise this is all a long con and that there is no effective counter terrorism effort that can 'keep us safe' without turning us into north Korea, the sooner we lose interest in all these restrictions in the name of safety, the better.

The feds claim that background checks don't stop people from buying assault weapons but we're supposed to believe the feds can be trusted to do background checks on potential terrorists? My uneducated redneck mind cannot reconcile this.
Would our country be better off with zero muslims? The answer is yes. Would our country be better off with no abortions? The answer is yes again.
Somebody explain to the dunce that places with zero superstitious morons shooting up abortion clinics OR blowing up crowded places are good. The presence of irrational morons is what makes danger. Aren't mohammedans against choice and women's rights too?
Reason.com's answer to a mass migration of members of a religion in which paradise is assured for those who emigrate in the cause of spreading it's political reach: Trust the government.
Somehow it's appropriate that a magazine that is so right on so many issues gets this one absolutely dead wrong.
So first I'm supposed to trust in the UN, which has been so effective in running it's refugee camps that non-Muslim refugees are afraid to come into them.
Then I'm supposed to trust the DHS, which is incredibly efficient at searching invalid old ladies and 10yo girls, but maybe not so much at finding weapons or weeding out threats.
Well then, bring 'em all in! We're in great hands...
Germany didn't fear refugees then, ask them now.
I like Reason magazine's optimism, but shifting to the "Oh trust the government." in this case is just foolhardy. I resist the propsect creating isolated societies within our cultural landscape (as will inevitably happen with mass muslim migration - and we see this everywhere it happens) is not compatible with a healthy democracy.
Here in Canada, we've set arbitrary targets for importing "refugees" and as a result of it, the incompetent bureaucracy is overwhelmed, and they're looking at flooding in unvetted people. A recipe for disaster. I will hold politicians personally accountable for the crimes that will be predictably committed as a result. I'm talking woodchippers and lamp-posts here.
They have to make Trudeau's number?
Easier to vote libertarian--legal in Canada but not in mohammedan dictatorships. Unlike Americans, can't you offer to bet them cash that their predictions are lies?
I don't fear the refugees. I just don't want hundreds of thousands-millions of them here. It's actually a pretty logical position if you're not an extreme ideologue.
Don't fear the refugees, you say? Fine. But, ponder for two seconds how your righteous, conciliatory plea would sound to the citizens of France, Germany, England, Sweden, and the rest of Europe today. Being a good Samaritan is a worthy calling; it works well when caring for appreciative and grateful victims, like the anonymous Christian in the video. But, welcoming potential subterfuge with open arms is insanity. The events in Paris are the results of THAT policy espoused in Europe for the past 40 years. We have close friends, very open-minded liberals, who spent years living in England and working in London. I wanted their perspective on the current state of Islamic communities and the aggression we hear about in Metropolitan European cities. Their response was that the situation over-all is extremely bad and worsening every year. Our media filters out most of the negative stories from western Europe on this subject until we see mass killings or brutality that cannot be down-played, or discarded as an isolated incident. Please pay attention to history... it might save your life and possibly our nation some day.
Here, smoke these cigarettes. Not EVERYONE gets cancer.
If they're legit... I don't care much.
The problem is that if it's so easy for them to come over, how easy is it for someone that wants to do harm to America to come in?
Also... Why are we taking in refugees if we can't even give up cost of living increases to our veterans and elderly?

The nice thing about being infiltrated by suicide bombers online is the blast radius is likely to be elsewhere--and they tend to disappear rather than become a nuisance like their GOP bretheren.
My first job out of High School was at St Paul and over the next 5 years Iearned so very much. Seeing the hospital torn down tears a small piece of my heart out. The Daughters of Charity and the doctors and staff of St Paul Hospital will always be with me.

Look, just because they were brainwashed against their will into becoming superstitious madmen, and are therefore objects of pity, that in no way makes it any smarter to import mohammedans than to import Ebola carriers or people infected with the black plague. In fact it is worse, for those diseases, unlike suicidal berserker cultism, can at least be treated. We already have a surplus of mindless religious maniacs under orders from God to murder people seeking and dispensing medical care. Maybe you could import them over there and tell them ISIS is Syrian for Reproductive Choice. We'd all be better off.
Great insight ! We should help refugees rather than fear them.

Two points, we are not afraid of refugees, we ARE concerned with terrorists that will slip into the stream to get into the country.
As for the vetting process, the agencies involved have missed/ignored clear warnings about potential terrorists from foreign intelligence agencies (Boston Marathon bombers) and in one case a desperate plea from the bomber's father to the US embassy (Underwear Bomber) and most recently Facebook rantings (San Bernardino). Yet we are supposed to believe that are competent enough to catch the random terrorist in a stream of human refugees?
I just realized this was written in 2002. I wonder what the gun crime rate is now. Any government that tells you that you have no right to self defense is not looking after your best interest. Self defense is the most basic right anyone has. No government or police can protect you. I can't believe you all allow this to continue. I keep a gun at home for self defense and have a license to carry it concealed any where I go. And I do. If I am attacked then at least I have a chance to stay alive. By the time the police arrive they can either arrange for my body to be picked up or take a statement from me. I choose the later. Britons let a right be taken from them and now it will be much harder to get it back. But you should try.

I think Refugee are not the one whom we should be afraid of. They are the one who needs help so allowing them in US is nothing harm.
usessayhelp.blogspot.com/
Except for the US taxpayers who are forced to pay for them
The Refugee system is almost all taxpayer funded. The so-called charities involved are actually government contractors who get paid for every refugee they handle. And by handle that means getting them signed up for welfare, food stamps, housing etc etc. So they are dumped onto the Federal, State, and Local taxpayers.
"Middle Eastern Refugees" covers a lot of ground. We have nothing to fear from Christian refugees who are clearly being squeezed out of their homelands.
It is troubling that there is the possibility that some Muslims are using this crisis as a cover for getting out of the Middle East and the chaos there. Unfortunately, the refugees are leaving millions of fellow Muslims behind to struggle with the consequences of conflict.
Mixed in the chaos of refugees are those who harbor malice toward the West and are determined to destroy it, as they have their own societies in the Middle East. They will not be happy until all religion and social moral order is destroyed.
The Refugee Program is an almost 100% taxpayer paid for program yet Reason loves it.
Their Cosmopolitanism overrides any Libertarianism that they pretend to have.
I keep hearing this 2 year wait nonsense. These are the same scum that said we could keep our doctor.

Don't fear all of the refugees. But you should fear the ones that want to kill Americans.
