Gov't Tried to Shut Down Rap in Straight Outta Compton, and They're Still Doing It.
Aspiring rappers trying to emulate the success of N.W.A. end up having their rap lyrics used against them in criminal proceedings.
The summer blockbuster Straight Outta Compton dramatizes the emergence of 1980s Southern California rap group N.W.A. In 1988, the album Straight Outta Compton popularized gangsta rap music with graphic, scary lyrics about street life in South Central, Los Angeles.
What you may not know is that one of their songs, "Fuck the Police," was at the center of a First Amendment fight between N.W.A. and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
In 1989, N.W.A.'s record label received a warning letter from the FBI saying the lyrics to "Fuck tha Police" encouraged "violence against and disrespect for the law enforcement officer." N.W.A. went public with the letter and their status as outlaw music artists only increased.
Even though Straight Outta Compton went on to be heralded as one of the best albums of all time by Rolling Stone, and N.W.A. members Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson) and Dr. Dre (Andre Romelle Young) went on to become rap superstars, law enforcement misunderstands rap music. Aspiring gangsta rappers from poor neighborhoods across the United States have tried to mimic the success of N.W.A. but find their lyrics used against them in criminal proceedings.
Just ask San Diego rapper, Tiny Doo (Brandon Duncan). San Diego district attorneys said that Duncan conspired to commit a series of gang-related shootings but didn't present any physical evidience that he had anything to do with the violent crimes. Instead, they said he benefited from the shootings through his gangsta rap album, No Safety.
"We're not just talking about a CD of anything, of love songs," said San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Anthony Campagna in court. "We're talking about a CD [cover] … There is a revolver with bullets."
"It's not real life, it's just entertainment," Duncan told Reason TV. He says gansta rap is no different than violent action movies: "The more shooting you talk about in your raps, the more people…want to go grab that album."
According to research from Charis Kubrin, a sociologist at the University of California-Irvine and Erik Nielson at the University of Richmond, prosecutors present rap in criminal proceedings because they know the scary effect it has on jurors who aren't familiar with rap's artistic conventions.
"Jurors [tend to be] older, higher socioeconomic status, [and] typically white," Kubrin told Reason TV. "They often don't have the proper context for understanding rap music."

always wondered, did the "N" in NWA stand for niggers or niggaz?
You can call it whatever you want and of course censoring it is wrong. Equally wrong is praising it . There has never been a musical movement so destructive to community as rap has been. The lyrics highlight and promote violence against women, gays, Whites, police and idolizes thuggish behavior.
yeah when I hear this shit it makes me want to kill.
It's disgusting & destructive and a perfect example of the decline of civilized society. It's bizarre that it's given attention in a civilized society. It isn't music. It's only appropriate in sub-Saharan Africa where it's used in shrunken head ceremonies.
The same was said of Jazz, the Blues, and Rock 'n Roll. I think we'll survive. The real dangers aren't on Rap stages, they're in the government and the Universities.
Thing is, there have always been musical subgeneras that glorified outlawry and violence, especially against edtablished authority. And the Authorities have often exhibited a case of the arse with the musicians, sometimes with more justification than others. I find Rap pretty annoying, but I feel the same way about "Joe Hill", if for different reasons.
I'm not suggesting that the government is right. These days there always seems to be some puffed-up goverment stooge explaining why he's allowed to violate somebody's civil rights. And I'm heartily sick of it. But it isn't new, it isn't uniquely aimed at Rappers, or brown people. And I think that we make a mistake if we don't challenge the idea that it is.
Lots of people find the Gangsta style 'offensive. If we make it about supression of that, a lot of folks will ignore it. It's about the State's reflexive attempts to exempt itself from all restrictions on its authority. Gangsta Rap, annoying as it is, does not excuse that. Neither does or did various folk singers being Communists (as if being a Communist wasn' disgrace enough).
RAP, hate speech put to music? If some RAP that used words promoting similar acts against blacks or political groups were to occur, would it be acceptable?
Is Rape 'Hate Speech', by any race-neutral definition? Sure. OTOH, 'Hate Speech' should have no legal standing as a special catagory. If the 1st amendment does not protect offensive speech, what the hell is it for?
As I heard one "critic" say:
RAP, they left the "C" off that word.
Perfect!
And similar witticisms have been made about pretty much every genera of popular music since the spread of recordings.
Of course, they were right about Disco....

The rythem and rhyme of RAP is catchy. The thugs and inspiration suck. On a case by case basis. . . It is okay or not. Tough living in freedom.
My criticism of Rap is, basically, what is it saying that wasn't said rather better by "We Real Cool".
But I criticise Punk on the grounds that The Who said everything the punks had to say that mattered on WHO'S NEXT.
