How Legal Marijuana Is Working in Colorado
Q&A with Christian Sederberg
"There's this idea that marijuana just appeared on January 1, 2014 and all of a sudden everyone is going to be using marijuana and not going to work," says Christian Sederberg, a Denver-based attorney at Vicente Sederberg LLC and one of the key members of Colorado's Amendment 64 campaign to legalize cannabis. "These are adults. They make decisions. They've been using marijuana for a long time and now they're buying it from a taxed and regulated store."
It's been over 18 months since Colorado became one of the first states to legalize marijuana. Though opponents of the measure predicted doom and gloom scenarios, the end of pot prohibition has not resulted in apocalyptic disaster.
In fact, the legalization of cannabis has been a boon to Colorado financially with an expected one billion in sales by 2016 and $40 million in excise taxes to be placed in state coffers.
"No taxes or anything are going to be a panacea. But what it is though is $60 to $100 million at the state level. That's real money," states Sederberg.
That's not to say that legalization hasn't come with it's challenges.
One of the unforeseen areas where Colorado faced problems was with edibles—an issue illustrated in Maureen Dowd's now famous (and highly mockable) editorial where she recounts her bad trip on edibles. The New York Times also reported that just after five months of legal sales, Colorado hospitals reported an increase in the number of children and adults becoming sick from eating edibles (the same article also notes the lack of hard data on the topic).
"The biggest challenge with edibles is not the marijuana," says Sederberg. "The onset takes time and so people will consume what they are told is a serving…and then it doesn't work for a while. So then they'll take another one…and they end up overconsuming."
The state has responded to such incidents by clarifying regulations on serving sizes and packaging. Colorado now requires that each edible serving size contain no more than 10 milligrams of active THC. The amount of active THC must also be clearly marked on the product and individual edibles must be easily separated into single serving sizes.
Sederberg notes that one of the main reasons for the popularity of edibles is due to the fact that there are no legal spaces to consume marijuana publicly.
"There's no place to use in a social environment," says Sederberg. "We really need to make a space for people to consume in a public environment and to be social just like you are with alcohol."
Sederberg and other legalization advocates are pushing for a November state ballot measure that would create public environments where people could use cannabis socially.
As Colorado refines their regulations, a handful of other states—including California, Nevada, Arizona, Massachusetts, and Maine—could legalize marijuana in 2016. What can they learn from the Colorado experience?
Sederberg stresses the importance of collaboration in the policy making process. "The Colorado model is the work group. It's the collaboration," says Sederberg. "You have to listen to all sides. We've gotten some very good ideas from people that were our opponents who are not our opponents anymore because they saw that we are working at making it better."

Overconsuming? I do not understand that word.
Dave's not here, man.
When did that one escape from the Museum of Petrified Jokes? Dave's been gone for almost 4 decades. Why the heck would anyone think that he's coming back?
Rumor.

So long as the pot bars are smoke free, everyone can go home happy. We can't have innocent bartenders coming down with lung cancer.
Almost as crazy as the rules on cigar bars where I live: cigars can be smoked inside but cigarettes must be smoked outside.
Shit, in Wisconsin you can't even smoke cigars inside the cigar bars! Even the shisha bars have shut down, because patrons were only allowed to smoke on the outdoor patios, but some cities (*cough*Madison*cough*) swooped in and outlawed hookahs on the sidewalks too.
It's total crap. That there remains a single individual in this country who can't see it's crap makes me the question the collective IQ of this nation.
Non,
Your irritation can give you insight into part of Trumps appeal-he speaks the term "PC" and directly argues with a PC-arguing reporter at a press conference, and adds anti-PC to his stump speech. Now, I'm not a "Tumpie," because I know about his Reform party past, and see him repeating the Reform Party "kinda protectionist" and "kinda trade war" ideas, which for anyone who has followed modern economic history, is not a good plan for us or anyone. But it did get a less able campaigner, Ross Perot, approx 20% of the popular vote. A better campaigner (Trump) is getting over 25 % of the Repub vote, and hopefully will be eclipsed by Cruz or someone else who can present a more sensible economic case along with Trumps Immigration and anti-PC push.
"... all of a sudden everyone is going to be using marijuana and not going to work..."
Isn't that the democrat ideal? If they don't work, they'll need the gubbermint to help them, more democrat voters. However, maybe the more they use, the more apt they will be not to get up and go vote. I see the dilemma.

As Gladys implied I didn't know that some one able to get paid USD5284 in three weeks on the internet . Get the facts ====Worktoday.ga
I don't think that not having a public space to smoke is the reason for the popularity of edibles alone.
I uch prefer edibles over smoking. I refer the superior long lasting high and it doesn't make me stupid and forgetful like smoking does..
Years ago I was prescribed an anti depressant until I refused to take it anymore. It changed my reality and had physical side effects. These days if I detect any signs of depression I just bake some brownies and eat a small b.ite in the morning and another in the middle of the afternoon. I mean a small bite. Small enough that I don't even detect the high aspect just an elevation out of the borderline depression.
What a shame I have to be a damn criminal because I don't like prozac, the State approved reality changing drug, that fucks with your life physically unlike a bite of brownie in the morning.
It's somewhere in between. For those of us who don't smoke, they're easier to deal with than a vaporizer when out and about--and you can't just crank up the vaporizer at Olive Garden. I'd like to argue you should be allowed to, if Olive Garden doesn't care. Of course, you won't be smoking in Olive Garden, and you probably won't be able to vaporize ANYTHING in "public" in ten years. 🙁

ROTHLMAO! Boiler room telemarketer!
Any state that is going to RE-Legalize Cannabis must include the right to grow your own. Here in WA. state we made the mistake of not including that right. Adults should be free to grow what they want to grow, no license,no registration.
Agreed. IMO, it was the biggest thing Colorado got right. I was already a patient, but it gives me peace of mind they're not even THINKING about ME any more. Because they're less likely to raid me, I'm less likely to worry about having a few extra clones, etc. (That's the bad news, a rooted clone, regardless of whether it's under "grow" lights, is a "plant" and there's a total of six allowed--three flowering.)
Colorado voters approved Amendment 64 on Election Day 1912, so yeah that is a lot more than 18 months.
What about those vast colonies of American military folks inside the states with legal "pot"? Colorado has many army and USAF bases, to include the USAF Academy. Won't all the cadets sometimes wander off base and go get stoned? Then maybe they'll all get piss-tested and thrown out. Then maybe we'd have to collectively put our dicks back in our pants, stay home, and stop trying to run the whole galaxy as an American colony... Maybe we could actually start paying our bills, and not collapsing economically!!!
SEE what happens when you start legalizing pot?!?! It's just TERRIBLE, I'm a tellin' ya!!!
Just imagine the new military doctrines historians will be talking about 20 years from now.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the military requires all sorts of discipline that's not required of the general public. Not consuming pot probably isn't at the top of that list.
You wold be huuuuuuugely wrong if you think not smoking pot doesn't top the list of things the military doesn't want you to do.
Waaay back when, when teh homosexuals and other assorted preverts were going to destroy military unit cohesion and efficacy all the services were more concerned with whether or not you toked up on the weekend. Because Ecstacy was thought to flush out of your system in only a couple of days, Monday morning piss tests were popular.
The idea was pushed that doing drugs on Friday night left you hungover and unsuitable for working come Monday.
Nonsense. I note that the article fails to include the huge rise in DUI arrests--mostly of teens who aren't supposed to GET pot, legally or otherwise--and the huge increase in pot use BY teens as well--who again, aren't supposed to GET pot. I must also note the unemployed in Colorado who now CAN'T find a job because they can't pass a routine drug test any longer. Yeah. REALLY good idea, Colorado.
Yes, I see what you mean...
However, please consider that, at a LARGE percentage of those jobs (now left un-filled), these pot smokers would have been forced to bake wedding cakes for gays, and that would lead us all to hell in a hand-basket. I, for one, would have NO idea how to love my hubby or my wife or my kids and cats and dogs and gerbils and pet spiders, and otherwise fill my duties to love my family, if the gull-danged GAY TURDS down the street were to dilute the strength of my marriage vows, by THEM being legally allowed to love each other!
So yes, I ramble, sorry... Just generally, I am saying, legal pot is a mixed dime baggie, yes...
I, for one, would have NO idea how to love my hubby or my wife
Gay bigamist.
*Or*, not *and*.
Why should I get thrown in jail for smoking some weed at home because you want the bud to be illegal?
And why? Because you're a bad parent and can't control your children.
How about alcohol? Kids drink because it's legal. They steal your whiskey and get waisted and raise hell.
Why not make alcohol illegal again - the war on alcohol.
Staring Al Capone as played by Rod Steiger.
I'm Rockabilly Rick and I approved this message of getting the government off our backs j!!!!!
I call bullshit. Sources please.
I've only read the opposite.
" I note that the article fails to include the huge rise in DUI arrests-"?
I'm calling bullisht on that claim.
"A Colorado State Patrol summary of citations involving driving under the influence (DUI) and driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) features the following stats:
? 5,546 citations were issued for DUI/DUID driving actions.
? 354 citations were issued for DUID driving actions where marijuana was the only indicator.
That leaves 4,872 in which pot wasn't part of the picture -- suggesting that drinking and driving remains by far a bigger issue.
Moreover, the number of citations in which marijuana was the sole factor is 6.3 percent"
Source: Westword
Not to mention the absurdly low blood-THC limit. You'd see a bump in DUI rates if you dropped the level of illegal intoxication from .08 to .02, but it would no longer be a meaningful statistic. The fact that even given that ridiculous standard so few cases of DUID are cited renders the worry pretty laughable.
Fuck off slaver.
1. Citation missing
2. Because, until lately, nobody tested for THC for DUI.
3. Stop testing for harmless legal drugs.

Never been a pothead. Not interested in consuming any. More interested in the impact of legalization on crime and vehicle accidents.
But don't lose sight of this: Your tax dollars for paying for endless arrays of jails, and legions of lawyers, judges, jailors, and cops, is going to go DOWN!!! PLUS, the economy will take an up-tick from more people being employed instead of being in jail for smoking pot.
Nailed it. Law enforcement has to find actual criminals--or at least someone on a different substance.
I think they should find actual victims. Not interested in locking up legions of losers who are tripping on brownies in an alleyway somewhere. Concerned about upticks in road accidents, property crime, etc....if it's attributable to drug policy.
legions of losers who are tripping on brownies in an alleyway somewhere
Heh. Pot is much more mainstream and middle-class than heroin.
Yeah, there is no crime attributable to the fact drugs are illegal. No one steals drugs because they can't be legally bought. No one is killed when illegal deals go bad. Illegal distributors never gun down their rivals in the streets. Innocents never get caught in the crossfire.
Dude, pick up a book and read about prohibition.
So you say, but where is the evidence?
Right. Where's YOUR evidence? No one here will take your word for it. Go pound salt.
I don't seem to recall accusing anyone of anything. You're kind of defensive about something for some reason or another though.
Better watch out, Sanjuro or he's gonna get polemical. It's goin DOWN real soon now.
I smell Tulpa.
The far more important question to ask is: "why do so many people feel the need to escape reality?"
Until that question is answered, we will continue to foster a dark underworld of crime and dependency.
Why? Because freedom! Also because people have been doing it since before we were people... Animals of various kinds like to get "stoned" on various substances as well. ... Also note this: A lot of kids are fucking themselves up with smoking "bath salts" (synthetic pot). It is way, way, WAY worse that real pot! For lack of just-about-totally-harmless real pot, they use that nasty crap... And get brain damage, etc., at times. I will be curious to see what happens with "bath salts" abuse (gasoline & glue vaping, etc., too) when enough stats roll in from Colorado, etc. ... Summary: Various mind-altering substances "sub" for each other, and "crowd each other out". The more of the less-harmful stuff available, the less of the really-bad shit gets used.
No = The far more important question to ask is: What is the justification for making some drugs illegal?
Since you want to put people in jail for smoking some reefer or sniffing coke - you have to justify it.
Put human beings in cages like animals is all they know. I disaprove of your behavior, into the cage.
No, we'll only have that underworld as long as prohibition exists. I escape reality by video games all the time. Why is not your concern.
The far more important question to ask is: "why do so many people feel the need to escape reality?" Until that question is answered, we will continue to foster a dark underworld of crime and dependency.
You're never going to come back to resume this discussion, and leaving aside that it's none of your business what I do with my spare time, it's because reality sucks. If I don't leave reality on occasion, I'll turn into a fucking asshole who thinks escaping reality is a criminal act that deserves getting locked in a concrete and steel rape box.
And if you, ConstitutionFirst, don't spend every waking moment dealing with real issues, by your definition you are contributing to the dark underworld. No radio or TV for you!
Why do you care? Mind your own damn business.

I have a bunch of friends and family in NC. Apparently, from what I've seen on facebook, the Republicans killed all the teachers, burned down the schools and outlawed learning of any kind. Which led someone to post a meme with this message: "What if the cure for cancer is locked inside the mind of someone who can't afford an education?"
So they're probably huge fans of the argument that the cure for cancer might have been locked inside the mind of a fetus.
If they really did that I'd move to NC and join the Republican Party!
NC has a flat tax now thanks to a Republican dominated legislature.
The NC GOP has been absolutely excellent in their hour of power.
You can tell by how batshit insane the NC progs are reacting.
I've been out of state for about 4 years. Did the NC Republicans actually cut spending or only taxes?
I think they actually cut spending on teacher salaries etc.
I only know about the tax changes.
Hypothesis: the paucity of anti-immigration insanity and other forms of hysteria (and even improving attitudes) in state-level GOP politics stems at least in part from the relative effectiveness of state-level GOP governance in actually delivering some decent policy, in contrast to the fed GOP, which only delivered more obeisance to Obama. This produced frustration amogst the plebians which the T-virus is now exploiting.
Yeah, & they can't afford educ'n because of all these taxes!
Anyone who thinks the 'cure of cancer' is 'locked' inside of someone and that education is going to spring that cure is a fucking imbecile with no clue how laboratory science actually happens.
The "cure" won't be reproducible and the NIH/NSF grant for the research will soak up all the money that a free market would've funneled to a real cure. Get government OUT of the (non-military) science bidness.
The money isn't just spent inefficiently. The stuff and people the money buys are gone too. Double-edged sword.
But progs fucking love science! If you just show it enough love it will give you the key to the mystical cancer-cure lockbox puzzle in your mind.
The cure is locked inside of someone, and only federal largesse will bring it out.
"What if the cure for cancer is locked inside the mind of someone who can't afford an education?"
I think progs are constantly torn between two beliefs: 1) that everyone is extremely and irreversibly stupid and must be controlled by a cabal of top men, and 2) everyone is extremely smart, and poor people are only poor because the mean ol' ReTHUGliKKKans make education too expensive for them.
Thanks to whomever posted the link to Housos on an earlier thread. I started watching the series. I like the opener for this episode with a riot over the government ending the baby bonus
"How am I supposed to pay my child support for this one if I can't get this one pregnant and get the money from the bonus to pay her?"
I don't know what this is but I'm going to spend the next several hours binge watching it.
I'm going to start episode four soon.
I thought I recognized some sites in Melbourne shown in episode three. I spent a little time on Google, and I stayed near where they filmed a scene or two. I didn't meet any swingers while there.
I could not understand a single word of that chick who was smoking and getting banged in the linked video. But it does look amusing.
I picked up a few words.
Is this the Australian Trailer Park Boys?
I've only seen a few Trailer Park Boys episodes, but there are a few similarities, especially with the scene I linked.
You should watch the whole series, Season 1 is kind of rough but after that they really hit their stride.
Sunnyvale / Sunnydale
Totally different.
Both possess a Hell Mouth, however.
That is so hilariously elitist. I still can't believe that was produced in a Western country in this decade. If they made a show like that in America everyone on MSNBC would have an aneurysm.
If they made a show like that in America everyone on MSNBC would have an aneurysm
I agree.
Watching the show and the antics of the Housos reminds of this Aussie I chatted with on a flight into Adelaide. The guy realized really quickly that I'm American. He has family in South Carolina and visits them occasionally.
At one point he's telling me Sydney is a dump and I shouldn't really spend lots of time there. He talks about drunken mobs of kids trashing the place. Then he talks about the beers he likes. He talks about having a few too many. I think he caught himself there because he stopped talking about booze.
Then he decided to lecture me on America. He's been to America, but only to South Carolina. He watched some Youtube videos on Detroit and read some articles about guns and crime, so therefore he's qualified to lecture me on Detroit's problems and crime. Full disclosure: I've never lived in the Detroit area but unlike this guy I've actually been to it. I tried to correct him on a few things, but he kept right on lecturing. I got it, he watched some videos and now thinks he's an expert.
He moved back to booze, and then started bitching about welfare. He went on about how it encourages people to not work and be lazy, and then he talks about his experience collecting welfare. He caught himself here, and then went on about how the government welfare schemes favor non-whites.
I was happy to arrive in Adelaide and leave that guy behind.
The worst part of Australia is the people, or so I've heard many times.
Australians are probably the most 'American' people in any country that isn't America. Well - any country that isn't America or Canada since, no matter what Canadian nationalists may claim, America and Canada are pretty much sister nations.
I like Australians. Whenever I meet Australians I actually feel like I'm talking to someone from my own country, since they really are very similar in a lot of ways to Americans. I think Australians tend to be a bit louder and a bit drunker, but they value a lot of the same things Americans value and if it weren't for their shitty gun laws and their shitty hate speech laws they'd actually be a freer country in a lot of ways than the United States is.
Well - any country that isn't America or Canada since, no matter what Canadian nationalists may claim, America and Canada are pretty much sister nations.
Criss du calice du tabarnak d'osti du sacrament!
Yeah...that's what I thought.
The thread is dead but I will respond anyway.
Like Irish, I like Aussies; however, there are assholes everywhere in the world. I happened to run into an Aussie asshole.
Irish, don't forget their bicycle helmet law among Australia's shitty laws. Aussies are also taxed heavier than the US. Speed cameras everywhere.
It looks like an Australian version of Shameless but less funny, and no James McAvoy. I mean the British version not the lame American Shameless on Cinemax.

Did you know Sophie Turner is the new Jean Grey in X-Men:Apocalypse? She can bring her special brand of whiny petulance to this role too!1
She is so hot though. I mean, she might be a little old for me since I am a 7 year old sex bear, but still.
I'm sure she'll wait for you.
And then this fucking prole had the balls to look me in the eye.
Civilians cutting eyes at a Blue Warrior shall not be tolerated. Keep your head DOWN, citizen. So you can look at their boots.
I always thought not making eye contact with them is bad. At this point there is literally nothing you can do when you encounter police to ensure your own safety.
I'm reminded of if you drive too fast, that attracts the cops' attention because you're speeding. If you drive too slow, that attracts the cops' attention because you might be impaired. If you drive right on the speed limit, that attracts the cops' attention because you have something to hide because who else would drive right at the speed limit?
Yeah, we (SC) have a supreme court opinion that says only traveling at the same speed as surrounding traffic is good enough for PC.
Murdered reporter's parents waving the bloody shirt
"You can't change the world in a day," Barbara Parker told CNN. "But we cannot be intimidated, we cannot be pushed aside."
On Wednesday, Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward -- two journalists for WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia -- were killed on live television by a disgruntled former employee.
In the days since, Andy Parker has emerged as perhaps the world's most visible advocate for gun control, making numerous appearances on numerous networks and even holding a news conference.
On Sunday, both of the Parkers spoke to CNN's Poppy Harlow, telling her that ending gun violence has become each of their lives' missions -- and the grieving parents pledged to be as unrelenting and as feisty as their daughter in achieving it.
"Alison would be really mad at me if I didn't take this on," said Andy Parker. "And I promise you, these people are messing with the wrong family. We are going to effect a change."
Yes young progwalker, reach for your ban hammer and strike me down. Give in to your hate in go charge hill GC
If your daughter had toned down her racist microaggressions she'd be alive today.
What the fuck is a Poopy Harlot?
que ce dice Rusty Trombone?
Wasn't this the piece of shit (sorry for your loss) that started talking about gun control, then said he was going to get a gun because he was afraid gun owners would come after him?
Great, another 'rights for me, but not for thee' asshole.
I give grieving loved ones a pass for anything they might blurt out in their grief when some asshole reporter sticks a mike in their face or a Matt Lauer or an Elizabeth Hasselback pushes their buttons first thing in the morning.
Once they start to make a career out of it and hook up with activists their no different than any other liberty-hating slaver. I'd have slightly more respect for Andy if he lead a boycott against 7-11 over the watermelon-flavored Slurpees.

I should've brought this up earlier: Anybody here care to speculate on what the next bit of progress in drugs policy will be? I mean beyond marijuana.
They seem to be in the process of outlawing narcotics for chronic and post-operative surgical pain.
I'm gonna say...abortifacients, free anti-depressants, euthanasia pills, mandatory psych meds and statins, Soma, Substance-D,CAN-D, Chew-Z, Victory Gin...
euthanasia pills.....meanwhile Dangerous Illegal Drugs will remain illegal.
So absurd, it's pretty much assured.
Right to Die. No Right to Analgesia.
That's a privilege, not a right, and only with a consenting partner.

OT. I was over at the Hill, that is thehill.com a couple days ago, and there was a story about the Hilldawg that had more than 70,000 posts. Seems crazy. But my analysis conclusion... People really hate her, possibly more than any American politician has ever been hated. She'll never be POTUS.
I agree. I don't think she wins the nomination since even most Democrats seem to really dislike her. I think Bernie or Biden gets the nod, in which case we could end up with the shittiest presidential campaign in history with Bernie/Biden vs. whatever piece of shit the Republicans churn out.
Bernie/Biden vs. Trump/Santorum sounds like a pretty good idea to get space colonization up, and fast.
If Bernie gets the nomination Biden is not vice president. He'll take Warren or some other leftist nutcase, but he isn't agreeing to take on an establishment hack like Biden if given the opportunity.
I think it would be Bernie/Warren or Biden...O'Malley, maybe?
Jesus... all of these combinations sound so improbable and terrifying.

"marijuana consumption places".
I don't know what that means or what that looks like. Smoking is illegal... well, pretty much everywhere in Washington, so I guess these "marijuana consumption places" will serve edibles?
You can smoke damn near anywhere in Mississippi. It's not some backward shithole like Washington.
It's a wholly different kind of backwards shithole.
The good kind. Canada is a cultural wasteland compared to Mississippi.
it is really need to make a space for people to consume in a public environment and to be social just like you are with alcohol."
