Can Americans Still Take a Joke? Comedians Say 'No.'
Filmmaker Ted Balaker on the 'outrage mob' and fighting back against the PC zealots.
"We've all seen it a million times: a comedian tells a joke, someone else gets offended, someone else blogs about it, and then 'boom!,' outrage spreads across the land," says filmmaker Ted Balaker who is currently finishing up his latest documentary, "Can We Take A Joke?." The film, which features comedians Gilbert Gottfried, Jim Norton, Lisa Lampanelli, Adam Carolla, Karith Foster, and Penn Jillette, examines the role of comedy in our culture of constant outrage.
"Comedians don't even have the freedom of conscience to just be neutral on something," Balaker told Reason TV's Nick Gillespie. "[They] have to affirm what the cool kids believe."
Balaker, a frequent Reason TV contributor, sat down with Gillespie at this year's FreedomFest 2015 to talk about the current state of comedy, how technology has fueled the outrage machine, and how comedians are fighting back against PC zealots.

Jokes aren't politically correct.
It goes back to a person can be rational, people are not.
A person (most) can take a joke, even one in poor taste. Society cannot tolerate a joke that defames any group, anywhere. Except for white males. Open season on those bitches.
Christians can be made fun of, too, but Moose-Limbs cannot! Call it the "violent fuck-head's veto". (ANY religion that is "whack" is fair game in my opinion... Just sayin' ).
Same for JOOOOOOOS. You can still get away with goofing on them. Doug Stanhope does a great bit.
I think most of these Comedians are upset that the GOP and the Democratic party have left the realm of politics and is beginning to comedy, literally and figuratively.
Millennials have no sense of humor. They were raised on the baby boomer hippie ethos that the world is perfect - "imagine ... and the world will be as one" - if only there weren't these bad people harshing their mellow. So down with the bad people!
They have no sense of life's fundamental unfairness, that our lives are short and insignificant, that there is scarcity and trade-offs to everything, that Mother Nature actually hates us and wants us dead, etc., all the stuff previous generations would make fun of.
I don't think the PC crowd understands what humor is. Being unPC is the very point of humor.
Joke 'em if they can't take a fuck.
Sir, you kinda beat me--I knew as soon as I saw this I had to come in here and say "Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke!"
Funny jokes and good humor in general requires an element of truth. Lots of people can't handle or don't want to admit to the truth, which is why they're offended.
This guy saved up his whole life for a special trip to Belgium just for this slice of Bavarian Cream Pie. When he got there they told him they were all out. That's all right he says. I'll just have a cup of coffee.
There's no truth in that!
As I've said since the early '80s. . .
Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke;
Joke 'em if they can't take a fuck;
If they don't wanna get joked - fuck 'em.
Humor, by definition, involves a description of human behavior that involves pain or humiliation for other people. Either someone slips on a banana, or you tell a joke that denegrates some human characteristic or human failing or human behavior. It is a variation on schadenfreud, taking pleasure from the misfortune of others.
This does not bother me, because I think that humor is very much a trait of human beings, but the concept of laughing at other people is such an abomination to the progressives, that they will automatically condemn humor.
Think about it - can you remember ANY joke that does not make fun of someone else, or does not rely on someone suffering some physical or mental injury?
This is the ultimate outcome of the progressive plan - humans without humanity.
Google pay 97$ per hour my last pay check was $8500 working 1o hours a week online. My younger brother friend has been averaging 12k for months now and he works about 22 hours a week. I cant believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
This is wha- I do...... ?????? http://www.online-jobs9.com

Doug Stanhope walks on eggshells to avoid offending
It's getting easier to receive attention for being easily offended than being funny
Nick, good choice. This was a great way to highlight the loss of liberty due to politically correct societal pressures.
Some of Karl's favorite comics (in no particular order):
1. Patton Oswalt
2. Jim Norton
3. Gilbert Gottfried (sure, he does voice work in lots of G-rated cartoons, but his standup stuff is as nasty as it gets)
4. Joe Rogan (go to YouTube and listen to his bit on watching Brokeback Mountain while stoned)
5. Doug Stanhope (go to YouTube and find his bit on Keynes and prostitutes)
6. Pete Holmes (he does a 4-minute bit totally ripping Subway, which I tried to find for yesterday's Jared article, but couldn't)
Jimmy Norton is hilarious. That meaty-titted li'l nothing.
Just stop apologizing! Happens every time - someone says something funny but "politically incorrect", outrage mob interrupts their otherwise totally uneventful lives to voice their hurt feelings, the target of the outrage is overwhelmed with all the negativity and apologizes. Just ignore them! They're a vocal minority.
They're a vocal minority.
It's like lots of mobs, apologizing only validates them and encourages others. Putting blood in the water as it were. You don't have to beat the whole mob, you just have to beat the handful of dipshits who are harmed by jokes.
So pull a Trump? Seems to work...
Start making cash right now... Get more time with your family by doing jobs that only require for you to have a computer and an internet access and you can have that at your home. Start bringing up to $8596 a month. I've started this job and I've never been happier and now I am sharing it with you, so you can try it too. You can check it out here...

In PC Europe they arrest people for telling jokes about Mohammed. It's only a matter of time before we get that here.
In PC Europe they arrest fucking KILL people for telling jokes about Mohammed.
The opening joke about working and "Mexicans" wasn't a joke about Mexicans, it was a joke about most of the rest of us.
At any rate, the purpose of speech is to avoid an escalation to violence, which always happens when speech fails.
it was a joke about most of the rest of us.
Ah, you mean white guys.
I am deeply offended that there are no trigger warnings !!!
Fuck the cool kids. Can I get a witness?
Ostensibly libertarian magazine demands a socialist scheme in which comedians are entitled to laughter and any negative responses to a joke are verboten so as to not offend the delicate sensibilities of these incredibly thin-skinned wealthy comedians. Oh no, someone noted that I told a joke that punched down instead of up and made fun of it, clearly I need to make a MOVIE about how outraged I am at the lack of universal acclaim I received!
What are you, fucking kidding me?
Oh snookums, are people being too mean to comedians you like? That should be illegal!
Whadaya mean Americans can't take a joke? They elected Obama president twice, didn't they?

Can't someone find a way to block all these "work at home" spam comments?

Can Americans Still Take a Joke?
Can Americans STILL Take a Joke?
STILL?????????????????
1950-1960's- Lenny Bruce arrested for obscenity multiple times
1970's - WBAI fined by government for playing George Carlin's 7 dirty words, Richard Pryor arrested for obscenity
1980-1990-2000's - Howard Stern and countless other radio hosts fined for obscenity
2010's- People get pffended by joke and excercise their free speech about it.
Maybe Americans can no longer take a joke, but as an anti-government libertarian, I can only see improvement.
