So an equipment rental company doesn't want to rent a woodchopper to a gay couple because they clearly stated they wanted to clear land currently inhabited by an endangered species as determined by the EPA. Discuss.
Will they rent to non-same-sex couples? If so, then sue them 'till they bleed.
But what of the endangered species, which may or not be gay?
I hadn't thought of that. Hmmmm....
I know! We should get a nice, fat government grant to study what the Millenials think about the issue.
Are Bonobos endangered? They're lesbian chimpanzees.
Force the rental company to rent to the gay couple then force the gay couple to use it to symbolically dispose of cakes from Christian bakeries.
Nice idea, but do you know what HIGH-FRUCTOSE-CORN-SUGAR does to the AQUIFERS!
Dear reason,
Please. Stop. Please, I get it. No more. Enough, I see three fingers, four, no however many you tell me... I love gay marriage.
Abortion became a constitutional right with Roe v. Wade, and the majority of Americans still approve of it. That *has not* eliminated it as a campaign issue. There are some differences with gay marriage, but it's naive to think that the left will want to give up gay rights as an issue and that a sizable number of conservative Americans aren't going to be angered.
Reason's position that this will make the Republican party more libertarian by taking this off the table is laughable. That is not how culture kampf works. That's now how its propagators want it to work. Not now and not ever.
it's naive to think that the left will want to give up gay rights as an issue
*cough*Confederate Flag*cough*
Even if Republicans agreed with gay marriage, most of them are still going to be pretty terrible. Also many of them will be of the Romney/Bloomberg/Christie type Northeastern Republican and we all know how libertarian they are.
I'm not sure that the GOP will be pushed toward libertarianism because of this decision.
Same-sex marriage actually lost the debate several times, in several states, but has now been handed total victory by five members of the SCOTUS. It...doesn't follow that the people who had been working through the issue through voting and elections will now docilely accept that the issue is settled. That libertarians overwhelmingly supported this ruling by the court will hardly endear them to those who worked so hard to "protect traditional marriage".
Maybe they will abandon the cause, but it will largely depend on whether the same-sex marriage community will be willing to leave churches, et al, alone, or if they feel compelled to "further their victory" by forcing all "the bigots" to embrace, affirm, and celebrate the same-sex lifestyle through legal means. I seem to remember hearing Limbaugh relating something about George Taikei speaking on this subject earlier today.
I would continue, but I seemed to have misplaced my extra supply of scare quotes.
It's crazy to think that voters banned gay marriage as recently as 2008. Most of the change here has occurred because of the courts, and there is no sign that the right is looking to back down on the issue.
I am hoping that Rand Paul says his hands are tied and moves on from the issue so it won't be used against him in the next election. That's about as much of a political bonus I can hope for here.
Scott Walker has already made some sort of Consitutional Amendment part of his platform. It will be interesting to see how much it hurts/helps him.
What an idiotic move. He should have said: "Settled issue, now let's talk about how the federal government is too big, too powerful, and wastes too much money." But no, he's gonna get stuck in an idiotic SoCon lost cause, and turn off a huge number of voters, especially younger ones....
No shit. He really wants to die on this hill?
Has he been very soconish before? Are Wisconsin Repulicans known for being very soconish?
Walker is SoCon. Wisconsin is a socially conservative state. I'd think Walker's social conservatism gets votes from a more economically liberal element that is uncomfortable with the social liberalism of the left.
No, but by virtue of putting it out there he puts other candidates in a bind. Most will find it hard not to support an amendment even though they'd much rather go moderate on the issue, like Jeb. Walker could gain some Jeb voters.
Still a stupid move IMO. There are a lot more voters of the "I dislike Obama and the Democrats but need a reason to vote GOP" type out there. This turns them off, while a few, smaller nods to the SoCons would lock down that vote. What are SoCons going to do, vote for Hillary or Bernie?
I think the conservatives have lost the culture war, for now at least. Economic issues are a huge weakness for Democrats, and a good free-market oriented platform would force the Democrats to fight on GOP and libertarian turf.
Walker has to win the primary before he can win the general, and his chances of winning the general are higher than his chances of winning the primary regardless of how he does it, because there's only one relevant competitor in the general, while there's a very crowded primary field.
I just don't think he needs to push a constitutional amendment on marriage in order to win the primary, and I think it hurts him badly in the general.
You know, I don't see why the conservatives don't do the same shit Obama did on gay marriage.
They can just look at the numbers.
Advisor: Mr. President, your issue on gay marriage hurts you among urban white liberals and even moderate conservatives.
Barack Obama: Yeah, but you're forgetting something, the black vote. Polls show that blacks skew anti-gay marriage!
Advisor: No, Mr. President, I'm forgetting nothing. You don't need the black vote. And it doesn't matter, they won't throw their vote to the GOP if you take an evolved position here. And more importantly, you won't lose a SINGLE SoCon vote, because you never had it. What I'm saying, Mr. President, is it's a win-win.
They can just look at the numbers.
Um, even on issues that libertarian support?
Republicans will become more inclusive or they will cease to exist. And I don't really care which.
I'm hoping for some more libertarianish Republicans. Perhaps actual reducing the deficit by a few million. And they probably won't cease to exist, just become a rump opposition party.
I think it will be an issue for a couple election cycles, but I don't see it lingering significantly for that long. Gay marriage today is a lot more popular than interracial marriage was when Loving v. Virginia happened and that wasn't a huge public issue for a long time after. Granted, there are some differences, as interracial marriage had been legal in a lot of states a lot longer than gay marriage has been.
I'm pretty sure the Republican establishment likes gay marriage (and more immigration for that matter). They are more concerned about how politically expedient it is. And they sure as hell don't want the Republicans becoming more libertarian.
I made the mistake of going on Facebook today...
That's usually a mistake on any day.
It's about time we had a Gay Marriage post.
You Know Who Else...
"Weird" Al Yankovic?
Stephen Lynch?
William S. Burroughs?
I fucking love Burroughs.
We can tell.
Why, is there some circumstance to warrant one?
Something about insurance coverage.
I don't even remember what it was like before
For all of you who give me grief for not always being anti-police: Fail of the Day: Texas State Trooper Gets Stuck Trying to Crawl Through Car Window
Is this cat libertarian?
The kitten attacked a fucking bleeding asshole infected with millions of snakebites wearing a fuckyou costume. I'd say the kitty was sorta pissed off at all the poison round her lil' paws.
I just laughed at the ow, ow, ows at the end.
The social signaling on social media today is vomitrocious. I'm pretty happy that same sex couples get to share the same benefits as straight people when it come to marriage but I don't feel the need to make my FB profile picture a fucking rainbow.
You can't just approve, you must show it! It's tolerant and shit.
It's like a race to see who is the most tolerant.
Wait until you see what your tax dollars paid for.
FUCK
THAT
SHIT
Obama was against gay marriage in 2008 and only changed his mind when Biden said he was for gay marriage. Fuck that guy for taking credit for something he didn't even believe in 7 years ago.
I know, right? Didn't Obama even make a tasteless joke about gay marriage at some White House Correspondents Dinner or something?
I hate everything.
Even unicorns?
Gay unicorns.
Unicorns are not plumber/construction worker fodder, Uncle Ed.
Unicorns are gay. Period. And unicorns tell me they are FUCKING happy hanging with the fucking homos. I'd be happy hanging with my hung gay dick if I was a unicorn, man... I'd fucking hang around all day, man...
I think hate is a very creative thing. I hate this modern bullshit that bitches on hate, Uncle Ed. Hate is an asteroid killing millions of lizards kids love. Man, what FUCKING flying rock would do that. Except for a rock spinning crazily and huge and madly and into this fucking marble. Dead. All the dinosaurs. A rock hated dinosaurs and made trillions of kids sad.
But, we as adults get to dig for this shit for decades and decades and pay mortgages digging for shit a hating rock fucked up. Hate is interesting and under-rated.
Please. He wasn't against it. It simply wasn't politically expedient.
Exactly.
Isn't using a rainbow as the symbol of gays kind of condescending? Isn't that some sort of nasty stereotype that all gay men are effete and like neon colors?
No. It is also not condescending for a woman to say she loves hanging out with "her gay." You, on the other hand, are a hateful bigot.
Gays are living parades. Gays are like gardens of living humans spilling volcanic ash of creativity the fuck everywhere. Gays are kinda neons and fires and fucking earth-toned and smudged and metallic and absurd which makes them kind of a cool component of overall society. So, Broche, rainbows are apropo for the homos and lesbos....
This isn't to say that the non-gays aren't colorificious in their own splendid manners... society is a composite of livers, lovers, and survivors- formed from millions of colors and thoughts and space flowers. Heteros are also rainbows... albeit rainbow 2. rainbows wax and wane and double...
Heteros and gays are a massive double rainbow over the greatest lake after the most massive rain...
For the skeered conservative minded religious brothers and sisters.... gayness has been part of American culture for fucking decades, man. The feds have no business approving your Christ marriages OR gay marriages- but here we are. The gays have always been around you and how has this ever affected any of you?... not. slight. no ripples.
Gays have used the same fucking feds that you use to enforce rules on the rest of us.
Do you have a manifesto or news letter I can subscribe to?
well, no. I crawl in the sands of an alley behind buildings on beaches that haven't been discovered yet.
Can I just say that you're awesome, AC?
no. you aren't allowed. I called a herd of Reason unicorns to haul your ass out of this thread and give a loving thrashing to you which is sorta an awesome massage really but after that fucking massage they pour cocaine in your nose and send you to your hotel in a taxi where you wake up tripping rainbows and tiny bears and little dogs liking kittens and waves of cheeseburgers and your favorite pretty humans piling all over your bed and they massage your sex organs with their tongues and toes until you cum over and over and then when you've cum the last greatest cum all the puppies and rainbows and pretty humans lie you down into the deepest sleep no human has ever experienced because they've never been in an agile cyborg paragraph... peace out, love
I like stories with happy endings.
Whoa, that's a full rainbow all the way
Double rainbow, oh my God, double rainbow
It's a double rainbow all the way...damn
It's a double rainbow all the way...damn, oh my God
What does this mean? It's so bright, so vivid
Double rainbow, double rainbow, it's so intense (tense)
What does this mean? It's startin to even look like a triple rainbow
That's a whole rainbow, man, ahhhh!
Double rainbow all the way 'cross the sky
Yeah, Yeeeeaaaaah, so intense
Double rainbow all the way 'cross the sky
Wow, wow, oh my God, look at that rainbow!
what a fucking beautiforious thing the lovely Hero has sublimely supplanted into the mindsets of these charms.
Hero Mula is the King of subversive and changeling and the fucking slatch. Slatch is Heroic Mumu.
Bitch can produce lines on a table and time think its just a fucking galaxy and I see it as Heroic Mumu Cocaine. Bitch lays down links like little sweet powders in threads late in the early morning and motherfuckers smash little fingers on spaceship drivestones demanding a run from the fucking shitfucked space cops... cuz this SHIT will be enjoying cocaine until I travel space and beyound space, you FUCKING whores and the Hero Mulatto felt good with his tight little bag on my hand..not his balls - his coke..
Anyone know why Rand is maintaining radio silence?
Because she's dead?
Probably trying to how the situation settles and calibrate the response that harms him the least.
If only he'd shown that kind of restraint on the flag nonsense.
When it came to the Confederate Flag, Rand actually made the right response (for once).
Justin Amash's statement about the SC decision is pretty good.
I just read Amash's statement and I agree it is pretty good. Someone copy and paste that and send it to Rand.
Amash always seems to have his shit together.
I just want to watch you juggle Amash's lovely balls in your crusty shark hands.
Oh, and regardless of what comes of this ruling, Scalia's dissent was hilarious with its mockery of the justices who signed off on this.
Thomas wrote the most reasoned opposition to the courts deciding this issue that I've seen.
The gays get the privilege to marry. I guess I should thank the state for the fucking right to drive.
But, I've always felt since before I was born... like literally fucking listening to the tube through my Pentecostal Mom's stretched stomach muscles. People should marry who they wish with consenting parties. Period. No special nasty ass bitch at the top should be given the right to grant adults things. I believe married relationships can incorporate anything aside from dogs and rocks- because dogs and rocks can voice consent... but I am ok with raping rocks... rocks aren't dogs. Nothing about a rock is worth respecting unless it is shiny and can be sold for serious piles of cash.
Fuck it. Ok so here we are. Lovers of the same sex can now marry as they should have already for since man started frying steaks on stones. But, fuck it... gay lovers are now like us married's in the aggregate. Trying to get to the fives. Working on the tens. Lucky to get to 20. And fucking miracle working to get into the 30's and 40's. And you are married gods and goddesses at 50-60. Period. i don't care if you hate each other at 60 years of marriage. The universe doesn't understand what you two have done and neither do I.
Fuck this fucking goddamn site... gods and dogs and rocks CANNOT voice fucking consent.. man fuck me.
I can't wait for the sitcom about the hetero room-mates who decide that getting 'married' provides them each benefits from their jobs that they'd otherwise not merit... and hilarity and obfuscation ensues.
Oh, Three's Company. you were so ahead of your time. (pours a 40 on the ground)
or, forget sitcom = the real deal. because why not?
Eh, fuck it. Gay marriage is last weeks news.
I want to clone myself and fuck my own asshole and stand next to my casket in reverence watching me die.
Cloning is the new infinity. Fuck robots. Robots have nothing on cloning.
My Roomba has a sad.
Q's roomba has not a FUCK reason ever to be sad because Q's roomba will have a little cloned Q to love forever, man. Q's little roomba just needs a housemate... for infinity and Q wants to live at least until spaceships are personal vessels in the garage of roomba owning Q's. Q's roomba needs to sit on Q's knee and read this shit.
Q's roomba: if your boy called Q chips gets cloned you get repaired and all and your ass won't get tossed in a fucking hillbilly flea market cuz Q chips died... if Q chips gets clone, Q's roomba, for at least the next fucking 4 hundred years....well, you will be cleaning floors in a super awesome spaceship for your Q chip....
I hope I helped your roomba, Quincy.
I provided counselling for a fucking roomba this evening for a man named Q chip. I think this indicates a wonderful life.
My Roomba has a happy.
All I can think of scrolling through Facebook / the internet in general today...
I paused wah diddy diddy by manfred for that. And it was worth it, shrimp'l handenial.
OT: To give everyone a break from gay marriage news, let's look at some Reddit stupidity from both the left and the right.
Via /r/conservative
"Everyone forgets that in Jefferson's day, the only people who wanted outright, sudden, uncompensated abolition were foaming-at-the-mouth radical leftists like Thomas Paine. Instead, Jefferson took the proper conservative stance on slavery: that it should be phased out gradually. If you try to turn society upside-down in the name of "social justice" the way the radical Republicans did, you just end up causing chaos. And in any case the government has no right to confiscate property without compensation - things would have worked out better if slaveowners had been paid for relinquishing their property instead of having it forcibly taken from them.
Ultimately, Jefferson was proven right - just look at how horribly the big government policies of Lincoln and Grant's reconstruction turned out for race relations. We're still dealing with the fallout a century and a half later."
Someone responds:
"Does this mean that all proposals to make abortion illegal aren't "properly conservative" because we need to gradually decrease the number of unborn children who get slaughtered in the womb?"
The Rebuttal?
"No, that's different because abortion is murder (i.e. violence), not merely an injustice."
(Apparently slavery doesn't constitute violence).
They continue:
"Let's get a few things straight:
1. Rights come from the creator (i.e. God). This is in the Declaration of Independence.
2. The Bible (i.e. the Word of God) condones and regulates slavery within moral limits
3. Slavery is not intrinsically immoral if it's practiced according to Biblical guidelines
If American slaveowners had simply stayed within Biblical guidelines, there wouldn't have been any need for abolitionism. However, American slaveowners ended up abusing their power, which made it necessary to pass gradual reforms."
http://np.reddit.com/r/Conserv.....on/cshomhp
I don't read reddit. It's a cesspool. But you would think someone would point out the fact that slavery grew as an institution and in significance in the next century after independence so Jefferson could not have been right. It's a gross oversimplification of Jefferson's position, regardless.
To be fair, broche, reason can be a fucking cesspool also and I admit that I am on that cesspool team from time to time. Maybe you should practice some cesspool broche some time. I'm sure the boys, girls, and queens, and the occasional werewolf might appreciate this shit.
Correct, because in 50 years all slaves would have been freed.
OMFG!
Now let's hear from the left, courtesy of /r/politics:
"The aristocratic plantation culture of the South didn't go away with the end of slavery, or with civil rights, nor with today's debate over the ol stars and bars.
No it lives on, in the politics of elitism which the Right in this country represent.
Its a culture of massive disenfranchisement, servitude and aristocratic oligarchy. Its no coincidence southerners have the lowest wages, the highest poverty. This system of a landed gentry has merely morphed into the defense of economic inequity we see from every RW think tank that's every existed.
Which is based on the exact same belief in the superiority of one group over another, and the morality of that minority dictating the condition of life to the largely impoverished masses.
They still want slaves, but they aren't going to call them that any more."

Listening to the class rhetoric of the left these days is a trip. You would think they are out standing in breadlines instead of being pampered little shits who have a smart phone or tablet in their hand 16 hours a day.
Reddit has never been a concern of this fucking place, sweet Cali. For realz. reddit is reddit and reason is reason.
Reason is obviously the best place you need to be for the greatest minds on topics. Reddit is crowd-trophy place. it was great 6 years ago. All the apple ipods and newborns and high-schoolers morphed that really creative model into a fucking hellhole of point-based group hives.
reddit, in my view, is a modern facebook.
reddit gets off on its non normal web look-
beneath? weak. points-based. group-encouraging. which draws gangs and small thinkers.
On reason? fuck it. post it. it might fall dead. and it will likely will. Post a response that pushes fingers- they will respond. If not- so what? live strong.
Reason is the place of the strong poster that does not live on laurels like every fucking place else.
And Reason has a solid village of dudes and queens and solid women....
Reddit is an online insane asylum that 90% of the time I just use for laughs (aside from a few niche subreddits that aren't political and aren't crazy).
I love you baby... Calidissident- bring on some kickass, baby.
And, all due respect to reddit.. I grew up on reddit... reddit is a true boardwalk. If the internet had a beach reddit would be its boardwalk... but Reason is its sun and shark and waves... peace out, love.
As a single person why does the government deny me marital benefits? I have a right to a proxy spouse, amiright?
I should think that this is correct.
the timing is ripe.
proxy loves should count on the tax forms...
It does strike me as an attempt at social engineering by the government. I understand that devoted, long-lasting marriages are a net benefit for society. However, these kinds of ideal marriages will happen even without the financial incentives. Giving people tax breaks to get married does not create ideal marriages; it creates marriages of expediency. If the tax benefits are a significant factor in a decision to marry, that marriage is probably lacking in the affection department, isn't it?
Marriage is just another one of those countless things that would still happen without the government's "help", but if you brought this idea up, you'd probably get the old ad-lib response, "Since you oppose the government doing X, you apparently want to phase X out of existence!"
the number one takeaway from the gay marriage case was the right to govern ourselves. That right was taken away.
