Frank Underwood Cares: A House of Cards Political Ad
Could Frank Underwood Beat Vladimir Putin? Bitch, Please.
When it comes to teaching Americans how government really works, the Netflix series House of Cards teaches us more about politics than all the Schoolhouse Rock songs and West Wing reruns put together, times 100.
With the debut of its third season, House of Cards remains the perfect antidote to decades of glamorous and nausea-inducing depictions of officials, activists, journalists, and public crusaders as embodiments of selfless idealism and public service.
And this minute-long commercial is the perfect antidote to political ads in which a politician's every minor victory over adversity and minimum-wage job held as a teenager is depicted as a triumph of light over dark and good over evil.

So is this show worth watching? I like Kevin Spacey but shows and movies about DC politics are universally terrible.
It’s quite good, though it probably appeals to me mostly because it eschews the idealized Top Man fetishism of something like the West Wing in favor of a breathtakingly deep cynicism about people’s motivations when it comes to politics. The production values are top-notch, as well.
I was less impressed with the scripting in season 2 compared to the first one–some of the subplots got a little absurd at times–but I’m still looking forward to season 3.
I second everything the android had to say about it.
It’s a trap, android!
No. I watched the first two seasons a couple weekends ago and it was not as good as it is hyped up to be. Mostly because it lacks any really interesting plot lines. The atmosphere is interesting and the show is really polished (although they make no effort to hide that the show is filmed in Baltimore, so all of a sudden there are skyscrapers in DC!) but it just isn’t very interesting or realistic. I found myself doing other things while the show played in the background and still not missing anything. Season one is better than season two, which has a plot line that is both unrealistic and dull.

No they’re not. Shows about DC politics are universally terrible when they show the apparachiks as slick, competent actors– even if they’re evil.
The show Veep on the other hand, is an excellent, intelligent representation of Washington politics.
This is why I haven’t given it a try. Any show with ultra-competent politicians–even if they’re only competent at getting power–is just too much fantasy for me. It’s like watching police procedurals where the cops are honest and hyper-competent. I know it’s so the opposite of reality that I can’t stand it.
Veep is absolutely the way to go. Also, if we’re giving out tv show recommendations, my new favorite show is Broad City. It’s like a more female-centric Always Sunny. Here are some quotes from the show as joke motivational posters. My favorite is “Where is the bathroom?” “Where isn’t the bathroom?”
Seriously, the show is funny as hell.
House of Cards really lost me in season three. However, Veep is fantastic, and I second Epi’s reccomendation of Broad City.
It’s chilling. The characters are almost half as evil as real-world politicians.

I’d give it a try. If you don’t like it after several episodes, you can probably give up.
I also recommend the original BBC series it is (loosely) based on.
I’ve never watched the show, but I assume a lot of the scenes shown were inside jokes for regular viewers. It shows that political ads can make anybody, with any record, look good. I expect that by the end of the 2016 election, I’ll be curled up in a fetal position.

Sorry, Underwood is an idiot.
I get paid over $87 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I’d be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I’ve been doing,,,,,,

Most of the people who watch the show would vote for Underwood, anyway. Because most people have deluded themselves into believing that they are in on the joke with the politicians. If they didn’t know they were being lied to at the time, but the time they realize, they’ll just play along anyway to avoid admitting that they were duped. The average progressive thinks they are a realist.
It lost me when on the first episode of this season it begins with him visiting and then literally urinating on his father’s grave. Talk about being hit over the head with a hammer.
Somehow I completely missed that he was pissing on the grave when I watched it.
Pissing all over good sense is ok, but pissing on an inanimate object when no one is looking is bad?
Ok.
I’ve enjoyed it so far. I’m only a few episodes into the third season.
If Underwood isn’t dead at the end of the season, I will be disappointed, though.
I think either “Yes, Minister” or Shakespeare’s “Richard III” would get the same points across.
Ahh, “Yes, Minister,” a strong contender for funniest show ever. For example,

I like Politicians’ logic myself.

… or, wait. no. Actually, its just “Islamist Murder-Freaks” giving each other props.
“nice beheading, bro” “No, you = really, we love your work” “Please, you’re too kind: we haven’t even conquered anything” “Well, to be fair, its mostly desert, and you’ve got so much jungle to deal with” “But your beards are just grand though!”
And he already works for Hillary! ;-D
Recycled threads. I guess Reason didn’t think the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday was worth a mention. All those marching protesters suffering the consequences of failing to obey the lawful command of an officer.
The GOP candidates (minus Rand Paul who wisely stayed away) spoke to the Iowa Farm Summit. Ted Cruz was the only one who told the Iowa farmers they could shove the ethanol mandate and wind power tax credits right up their ass because a Cruz administration ain’t writing any more corporate welfare checks. Bush vowed to continue the RFS until 2022 or whenever ethanol became profitable (never).
Yeah, why would Reason want to cover an event where a group of people long oppressed by their governments bravely came together in defiant protest and were beat into comas by government thugs?
I guess Reason didn’t think the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday was worth a mention.
As somebody born in 1972 I don’t give a shit about the 50th anniversary of the Boomers’ cultuarl touchstones.
How’s that Libertopia workin’ out for ya?
While cities across the country are cutting services, raising taxes and contemplating bankruptcy, something extraordinary is happening in a suburban community just north of Atlanta, Georgia.
Since incorporating in 2005, Sandy Springs has improved its services, invested tens of millions of dollars in infrastructure and kept taxes flat. And get this: Sandy Springs has no long-term liabilities.
This is the story of Sandy Springs, Georgia-the city that outsourced everything.

They need a nice privatized jail to lock his ass up in.
Here’s the thread with all the positive comments:

Decentralization leads to a lot of little police departments enforcing their “zero tolerance” on the through streets and 3/4 of a mile of interstate. The bad ol’ county department stuck to actual crimes and wrecks.
Bonus H&R tie-in
This is where Palin’s Buttplug actually claims to live.
Regarding “privatized” jails (and police). Absolutely none that we have are actually privatize. They are all mandated, completely under government control, and completely paid by the state. The task is simply contracted out to some nominally private corp.
Now imagine real privatization: the people in the community would be directly paying for it out of their pocket. Voluntarily. Only then would the incentive structure make sense.
