The State of Jefferson Moves One Step Closer to Reality

On Thursday, January 15, 2015 a small group of people gathered in front of the Califonia State Capitol in Sacramento, California. They mostly wore green and chanted slogans like "The time has come for fifty-one." This group is part of the State of Jefferson movement.

The State of Jefferson is a group of people who are fighting to take a handful of counties in Northern California and seperate to become its own state. 

They were gathered at the state capitol to turn in declarations from three new counties to separate from the state of California. With their goal set at 10 to 12 counties and the current number sitting at 7, they are about half way to reaching their goal.

Both California's state legislature and the U.S. Congress would have to approve the plan to make Jefferson a reality. And while that is unlikely the spporters of the State of Jefferson keep moving forward towards their goal.

I like this idea, and unlike the ill-conceived State of Cascadia, they'd actually have access to the ocean.

Admit them and Puerto Rico at the same time. While you're at it, consolidate New England into one state, make Cascadia part of Idaho, merge the Dakotas, and sign a Lateran Treaty between DC/Congress and Maryland.

Or Connecticut. People forget that Connecticut is part of New England, since they are basically New Yorkers. A big percentage of them even like the Jets. For that reason alone they should be kicked out of New England for treason!

I'd be down for making Maine and New Hampshire one state if New Hampshire's laws applied. Lepage is trying to make Maine more like our southern neighbor, but the nitwits in Portland will probably have a conniption before that happens.

Jefferson State is composed of Northern California (again not Sacramento or San Francisco, but everything north of Chico) and Southern Oregon everything south of Eugene. The Northern Cali capitol would either be the city of Redding or Yreka, in Oregon it would be the city of Medford.

If you succeed, make sure your new state legislature is composed of 2 bodies.

Make sure you have a peoples house (districts of equal population),
and a states house (districts of equal land).

This way rural areas are not stampeded by the masses in big cities, or vice versa.

According to the US Supreme Court, states can't make districts based on land, only on population. It's related to a string of cases involving legislatures refusing to change legislative boundaries following population shifts, effectively disenfranchising newly populated areas.

Even if it never coes to fruition or actual secession, there is a lot of value in what they're doing. Sometimes people need a reminder that it's not all a given, and that it is actually possible for, say , NorCal to divorce from the abusive spouse of SoCal.

GO JEFFERSON!!! I am from Mt. Shasta which resides in Jefferson State. Mt. Shasta is in Siskiyou county and the county seat is the town of Yreka, you walk downtown and you see Jefferson flags flying all over the place. People always say "I wish California would fall into the sea" but I correct them, "No you wish SOUTHERN California would fall in the sea". Northern California (I don't mean San Francisco or Sacramento ask any Northerner and they'll get pissed about that. San Francisco and Sacramento are central California) is mostly conservative and libertarian, its really rural and the people are super independent, even the liberal hippies are believe it or not. I was born and lived most of my life in what we call "Jefferson State". The reason why I am a libertarian is because I lived in that part of California and the mindset effected me growing up, some people call it the "Texas of the West Coast". Problem is, we get outvoted and out funded all the time because the huge population centers in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles are big government lovers, we always get the shit end of the stick. In fact, the rest of the state is embarrassed by the upper North, I've heard "hick off the back of a pumpkin truck" and "dumb racist rednecks" you know, the typical liberal name calling. Anyways, I am realistic and I don't think it will happen but I'd like to see it happen.
