School Choice Battle Is 'About Power,' Says Ex-Black Power Leader
Civil rights leader Howard Fuller marches for education reform in Montgomery, Alabama.
On Wednesday, January 28th, thousands of parents and students marched down the streets in Montgomery, Alabama, demanding that their state recognize the growing need for more options in elementary and secondary education. The march was a part of National School Choice Week, a movement which aims to give parents more control over their children's education through the implementation of voucher systems and charter schools. Parental control when it comes to their children's education, the movement argues, is largely lacking in the current education system where children are geographically zoned for a specific public school.
"It's ironic that we are here in Montgomery, Alabama, still trying to figure out ways in which people can gain control over their lives," says Dr. Howard Fuller, of the Black Alliance for Educational Options and a former civil rights advocate in the 1960s and 70s. Fuller has spent the last three decades advocating for school choice. He's particularly aware of how the status-quo affects minority students, many of whom are zoned to failing public schools.
"[School choice] is particularly important for low-income and working class children of color because so many of them are in schools that do not work for them. So the idea is to give them other options, other choices," says Fuller, "It's trying to give families more control over the decision-making as to where is the best place for their children to get the education that they desire for them."
State Republicans are expected to try again this year to bring charter schools to Alabama, an effort that has fallen flat in previous attempts due largely to the pressure of the teachers' unions, which oppose school choice. Fuller and Kevin Chavous, of the American Federation for Children and Alliance for School Choice, believe the unions' opposition boils down to power.
"Teachers care about kids, most teachers, but the political arm of the teachers' unions is about power, money, and control," says Chavous.

That reminded me of Minerva Mayflower.
Duh.
I thought school choice was racist. This is making me uncomfortable.
"spoked"?
Want to unleash a revolution in public education? Have the taxpayer portion of school funding follow the kid to whatever institution the parents choose to send him to, including accredited religious private schooling.
Two things will happen. First, the politicians will suddenly decide that the amount of per capita spend for schooling by the county is far too generous. Second, even with a reduced amount, when competition is added to the mix, real education will take place, kids will learn, inadequate teachers will find it hard to find employment.
Public funding to religious schools? No way. I'll not have my tax dollars go to any religious institution. If you want a religious education for your child, pay for it.
Then again, maybe I'll open a Satanist school with public funding.
Then again, maybe I'll open a Satanist school with public funding.
Go for it. We'll see how many show up.
I'd go. Then again, I'm an atheist, and Satanist of the LaVey variety are pretty much atheists with wicked tattoos. Furthermore, if I've got to pony up for your kids to go to school, I'd like you to at least be the person who's making the decision as to which school they're attending.
if the school teaches all the reading, writing and 'rithmetic that's required (ans history and what not) should they be disqualified from receiving funds because they also start the day with prayer and have classes on Bible study?
IOW, as long it's accredited to all the same standards as the public schools?
That'll get the same argument against it as vouchers do. To whit, "failing" schools fail because they don't get enough money, so pulling out more money by allowing children to leave--thus reducing school funding--punishes the children who can't commute to another school, and therefore harms the poorest students who arguably need public education the most.
I don't buy that argument, but that's what you'll hear against "backpack funding" and all the other incarnations of school choice.
And whenever school funding is being discussed, never forget the notorious Kansas City School Debacle:

It is an eye opener.
Good call Sir. I'm a resident. That's why almost everyone I know moves to the burbs' before their child reaches the age of four.
That read is fucking scary...sadly not much has changed and we will be accused of hating the children.
my best friend's step-sister makes $70 hourly on the computer . She has been out of a job for 5 months but last month her payment was $20578 just working on the computer for a few hours. you can look here........

How about the choice to keep the money that I earned and let schools fund themselves through means other than coercion.
5 Devastating Facts About Charter Schools You Won't Hear from the 'National School Choice Week' Propaganda Campaign - It's nothing more than a slick ad campaign, disguised as public service.

1. There are no data that support the idea that charter schools are superior to public schools.
2. Unlike public schools, charters can pick and choose their students.
3. Children who are better resourced with more family support are the winners in the school choice game.
4. It's family income, stupid.
5. Public schools, in some communities, are doing just fine.
maybe everything you say is correct, but does that justify talking choice away from parents? Why not drop barriers to the creation of schools, and just let the parents decide which ones they like best?
It sounds like you advocate having some top man do a study deciding which is best, and then telling the rest of us that's where we need to go.
Laurie is a delusional twat other than point 3...duh.
I'm guessing she's a unionized public school teacher, with unionized being the most important.
And Laurie poo fails while pointing out SOME schools are doing ok, when most inner city kids have no access to decent educational opportunties.
I'm a white guy in Montana and when I see progs like this bitch spouting nonsense it makes me fucking mad. I'd love to see more opportunities for these kids, but until these progs allow inner city kids off the plantation of progville it won't happen.
They spout racism yet their whole approach to these kids is inherently racist. They seem to think the kids aren't able to achieve without the paternalism of SJW's like her. It's disgusting how racist this bitch is.
It's infuriating to me.
I'd really like to see someone point out that once again, Democrats are trying to keep minority students out of good schools.
School segregation was forcibly ended--and Democrat policies subsequently worked to undermine and destroy public education. Once done, Democrat policies keep the blacks(and let's be honest here--that's the polite version of the word they're actually thinking) in the destroyed schools.
Sounds crazy, right? But does it sound any crazier than the idea that the bulk of the segregationist Democratic party went, overnight, from being a klansman harboring bunch of racists to the champions of civil rights?
Let's see how this country does if only the taxpaying citizens could vote. If you owe tax money at the time of any vote, your vote does not count. Then the taxpayers would have a say, as opposed to the tax "gatherers". Granted we still wouldn't have much to choose from politician-wise for the first few rounds, but that would change quickly. We would lose all of the libs real fast, and only have to worry about fighting off the far-right cases, as I believe most of the taxpaying citizens are pretty well "center minded".
Also, every union member 's vote would count and the public unions would still be shut down quickly, as they are outdated. In addition to all of the laws in place to protect workers' rights, the internet is a tool that can be used by the teachers, police, etc.. who could get together to collectively bargain and organize, or strike (if necessary), without the union dues. Probably pennies per person to keep a website up. (Same goes with private companies like Ford, GM and on down the line?) The ability of instant mass communication has rendered the unions outdated, and therefore useless. The reason the libs try to "dumb up" the youth on unions, is that the unions are one of their main sources of political power and financing. I don't think that our youth is stupid enough to believe their crap for too long.
Taxpayers' money (public servant's dues) should not be forced to be given to unions, which drives up government costs, which drives up taxes, -to pay public workers more than what the private sector is making (along with benefits, insurance etc..), and the inability to get rid of the "bad apples" (without having to pay their outrageous benefit plans after firing). If all of the private companies had to pay excessively high salaries, add the benefits etc.., no one would be able to afford anything as prices would soar, especially for American (made) goods and services. "Made in China" prices however, would remain the same (floating just below whatever our jacked up prices are at the time).
You must teach your children the dangers of communism at home, as the many teachers are pushing their liberal agendas and dumping a lot of sugar on it to make the children believe that's the way "civilized societies" think. The unions provide a serious monetary force to keep libs in the classroom as well as in politics, and that has got to stop. Unions spend big bucks to keep their selected political leaders in, so they can force their will, such as running politicians out of town to keep a vote they don't like from happening. They claim they are for the working class, yet are only out for themselves and unfortunately many of the sheeple fall for that crap.
Oh, and for the ones that try the crap about Hitler abolishing labor unions in 1933- Unemployment was at 34% (6 million) in 1932, was reduced to 15.4%(1 million) in 1934.

Don't even get me started on the Fed's excessive printing of $, lack of drilling our own oil, tort reform (sue happy people & litigation attorneys), foreign "aid", government waste, business practices that lower the quality of American products, and illegals (who would all be sent home if only taxpaying citizens could vote).
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for life. Unless, of course, you keep giving him fish, then he will be at your doorstep every day. If the dems would learn this, and quit giving away the fish, we could get this country back on track. Eventually the libs at the doorstep would have to actually go get their own fish, likely by hiding around the corner waiting to steal yours.
Sorry so long winded- I just believe that public sector unions should be illegal and am sick of paying 3 times too much for that new car
