Chinatown Bus Pioneer Fung Wah Strangled by Federal Bureaucracy
The company has burned through $3 million, as regulators spend a year and a half deliberating its fate.
In 1993, Pei Lin Liang, an immigrant from Guangdong province and a former noodle factory deliveryman, started a local van service in New York City that would later become Fung Wah, the very first "Chinatown bus" company. Liang deserves credit for launching a revolution in "curbside busing"—in which motor coaches pick up and drop off passengers right off the street—now the fastest growing mode of intercity travel in the U.S.
Last March, the U.S. Department of Transportation forced Fung Wah to halt its operations, which was part of a broader safety crackdown on the industry. As Reason reported last year, the closing of Fung Wah was the result of regulatory incompetence—but an even greater injustice is what's happened in the year and a half since.

I love that movie. I remember watching the preview with my brother in the theater long ago, and we both said, "That's going to be the greatest movie ever."

Sadly, every word of that is true.
This is the federal government making war on poor people. If you can't afford your own car, gas and tolls or an airline or overpriced AMTRAK ticket, well go fuck yourself. You shouldn't be raising your carbon footprint with your binge traveling anywhere.
Of course this story will never make the national media as anything other than "the glorious federal government just saved people from unsafe buses". The people who are totally fucked by this, the employees, the owners, the customers who benefited from a cheap way to get up and down the I-95 corridor are just eggs to be broken to make an omelet. The media cares about the poor and the less fortunate you see, unless of course they get in the way of the great Prog hive or the majesty of the all mighty power of government. Then they can go crawl in a hole and die, since their purpose in life is to serve as props for the greater Prog cause.

If those buses were pulled off the road because of safety concerns, it's a hard sell for me not to believe it.
You'll note that the Fung Wa bus company complied with every complaint, in writing. Plus, the unsafe driving is just an allegation. Are buses not subject to the same rules of the road, and also subject to the same ticketing the rest of us are?
Liang's lawyer have done everything they were asked to do by the DOT. The ultimate point of the video (if you watched it) was about how a popular service goes into permanent limbo while waiting for someone at the DOT to answer the fucking phone.
I know, I know, according to Eric Holder, that is due process.

I'm assuming that public transit of this type would have many MORE rules of the road which apply. After all, when a crash happens and the bodies are picked up, someone is gonna want to know if - for example - they drug test.
Like it or not, there is additional responsibility when you take the public's money and use our "common" roads, infrastructure, etc. to profit.
That's neither libertarian nor progressive - it just makes sense. If the metrosexual dies in the bus crash, mom and dad are gonna want to know whether it could have been avoided.
I presume Thom's principal complaint is about how the buses act on the road: swerving, forcing their way in, general aggressive driving etc. All things that would normally be handled through the state or local traffic statutes.
I'm guessing (and this is only a guess) that the real safety violations were not of the moving variety, but the regulatory type. First aid kits not prominently displayed. Exit hatches not properly marked. Drivers hadn't gone through rent-seeking blah blah blah course and thus weren't certified to transport people, a list of 'passenger rights' weren't being prominently displayed on every bus.
Again, according to the video, he made amends for every complaint, but is stuck in regulatory limbo. The complaint is about due process.
It's a sad day when people stop complaining about the regs themselves, happily comply, but STILL can't run their business because their case is sitting in some pencil-neck's 'inbox' while he's facebooking and yukking it up in the employee lounge.

Yeah, my comment was probably meant to me more light hearted, but of course there is no such thing in these parts. Those guys sure did drive like assholes though. They also crashed pretty often, from what I remember.
Actually, their safety record is better than the big boys. I suspect if you look you'll find a revolving door between big bus companies and the top regulators.

FWIW there was a "Chinatown" bus crash here in Virginia in May, 2011. Four people killed, many injuries.
So? This accident killed THIRTEEN people and was caused by bad weather.

15 died on southbound 95, just before the Hutchinson River Parkway exit in the Bronx in 2011. It took out the guardrail for hundreds of yards and sliced the bus in half like a hot dog roll. The only stressful driving circumstances I've had involve a) 18-wheelers and b) commuters.

I've had a truck driver pass me, then slow down, then pass me, then slow down. It was like a scene out of that Dennis Weaver movie. Except it was on I-81 in PA. He was stupid enough to get in front of me at one point (going about 30 MPH on the interstate), whereby I signaled that I was going to exit, and he apparently believed me. As soon as he was committed to the exit ramp, I jammed it into a low gear and took off.
So, yeah.

I never drive faster than I can see.
I rarely drive on divided, multi-lane highways, so the only stressful conditions I usually have to deal with are the people in front of me who drive too slowly and then speed up when there is a passing lane.

Love curbside busing, and had an OK experience on the one 'authentic' Chinatown bus I took.
For a moment I did think that the government was adopting some ISIS techniques to enforce regulations.
It definitely crossed my mind as a possibility.

Progressives love mass transit until someone makes a profit.
Mass transit is a basic human right to be provided poorly by government at a loss.
Can't have someone delivering a superior product at a lower cost while also making a profit. I mean, you can't profit off of a basic human right. That's immoral.
Or at least pay proper tribute and use government provided bus stations.

I am chomping at the bit to get a hold of a couple Sprinter vans for my company to deliver our product.
Under 10,000 GVW and 90% of the DOT regulation bullshit is avoided.
That is, until they lower the GVW threshold again. Less than 10 years ago under 26,000 GVW was safe (about the time my company started). Of course, right at the time I grabbed the reigns of Logistics was when the DOT lowered that to 10k plus. So at the rate they are changing the rules, I expect that before 2030 rolls around anything larger than a Fiat will be considered a Commercial Motor Vehicle.
