Battling Nancy Pelosi: Candidate John Dennis on Why Libertarianism is the Only Way Forward for the GOP
"We are the bridge on all those sorts of issues where the Republicans have no other bridges, so maybe we should put up a toll road and make them pay to come across," says John Dennis, the libertarian-leaning Republican candidate currently running to unseat Rep. Nancy Pelosi. "We are the bridge to the millennials. I don't think there is any question about that."
Dennis has spoken in favor of same-sex marriage, would like to abolish the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, and Education, and is seeking to repeal the Patriot Act. He also supports the decriminalization of marijuana. "I'm not telling people to go out and smoke pot," Dennis explains, "but if you do, it's your choice and your responsibility."
This election marks Dennis' fourth campaign against the former Speaker of the House. While the prospect of success against Pelosi may be grim, Dennis says he always "runs to win."
Reason TV's Nick Gillespie caught up with Dennis at the Lincoln Labs' Reboot Conference, held July 18-20 in San Francisco, California, to discuss Nancy Pelosi, the liberty wing of the Republican Party, and what it will take to reach millennials.

I once met the one-time official Libertarian candidate for this seat. I think his candidacy may have been doomed by an interview with a local weekly, in which he was asked if his Second Amendment beliefs meant that he thought children should be allowed to own AK-47s, and he said yes.
Dennis: "Nancy Pelosi is the most awful person in congress on so many different levels."
Nick: "Explain that a little."
No explanation necessary.
So the millennialz in the highest income and highest educated part of the US....know nothing???
You have to explain why all these incredibly smart, wealthy and successful business people don't like this dude.
That should be very easy for you. I'll await.
Short answer: The Treason of the Intellectuals
"You have to explain why all these incredibly smart, wealthy and successful business people don't like this dude."
No, we know why.
Lefty imbeciles need to be told she's incapable of telling the truth and she's so ignorant she actually said 'we have to pass it to see what's in it.'
So, you don't think all the REAL John Galts of this world know their choices?
Fantastic!
You sit there behind computers and phones made by these folks, using networks and operating systems perfected by them and then tell us that...well, these people have no idea about reality???
Wow......
And this guy want to abolish the Dept. of Commerce too? Wow, just wow.
Backwards and Bizzarro World, my friends. Accept reality. It's not so bad. Reality is that the fine GOP Gov of Jeffersons Dominion is headed to jail for corruption while Nancy will retain her seat.
Period.
"And this guy want to abolish the Dept. of Commerce too? Wow, just wow."
Er, just because a division-of-labor economy (and therefore the concept of exchange - "commerce") is a great big Good Idea, how can it be conjured that the federal government, in the form of a Cabinet-level branch of the Executive, should be screwing with it to the advantage of politically connected actors in said economy?
If anything, isn't the good that commerce does a great and convincing reason to keep the politicians and the other government thugs OUT of it?
Actually, the Department of Commerce, despite its title, has very little to do with business. It's the department where they stick agencies that don't fit in other departments. Abolishing it is hardly a shocking idea...it's been openly discussed for decades.
Openly discussed by both Democrats and Republicans. Obama suggested closing it in 2012.
I suppose they want to turn of the Dept. of Ag to Monsanto directly???
Or the dept. of Education to the Fundamentalists?
Do state Ag, Education and Commerce departments also need closing? Why not -Ca. is bigger than most countries on the planet, so even State agencies like that represent Big Gubment.
As to pot, we lefties are about 3-4 decades ahead of him. Glad to see the cavemen catching up....but it's certainly not worthy of being elected for the popular view.
funny thing about your monsanto comment leftie
the senators, judges, and all other appointed officiates who work for monsanto, big Pharma, Goldman-sachs, and big oil are almost ALL Democrats, and the handful that arent were appointed by progressive president boosh

"I suppose they want to turn of the Dept. of Ag to Monsanto directly???"
Oh, look! Lefty asshole forgot how to spell KOCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"So, you don't think all the REAL John Galts of this world know their choices?"
Dipshit, quit drinking before you post. It makes you sound even more stupid than you are.
its very easy to explain.
they aren't poor, and confuse charity with taxation. realistically taxation (amurikan style a.k.a socialism) harms the poorest of the working class and benefits the wealthy and the non-working poor.
of course the wealthy do not want to pay for their own infrastructure for their goods when they can get their workers to foot the bill every week without consent before they even receive their pay.
Conservatism is dead. The fight is now between liberals and libertarians. Specifically the fight is whether liberty is negative or positive.
Fortunately, the liberals haven't yet figured that out.
Unfortunately, the conservatives haven't yet figured that out.
Actually, there are vastly more fundamentalists in this country than there are libertarians. Even been to a libertarian convention? We have a fairly active party here in MA and they all fit in one guy's backyard.
craiginmass|9.4.14 @ 5:58PM|#
"Actually, there are vastly more fundamentalists in this country than there are libertarians."
Yes, there are; that ol' D ticket fundies are all around us.
I presume you'll be one of those imbeciles.
I'm actually a radical. I believe that opium should be legal and that politicians who take bribes and graft and even dark money from the Kochs should be locked up.
Turd.Burglar.
then why would you cheer for someone who vehemently hates you and your freedoms like pelosi?
craiginmass|9.4.14 @ 10:37PM|#
"I'm actually a radical."
You're a fucking lefty ignoramus.
Unfortunately, the conservatives haven't yet figured that out.
Unfortunately the conservatives have figured that out, but they're on the big government side with the liberals.
Nah, I think once the wheels inevitably start to fall off our corporatist system and the left is getting very vocal and/or serious about murdering the rich (meaning, you know, the employed) and stealing their shit, especially if the proposed murderers and murderees are largely of different races, nationalities, and/or religions, fascism might have a good shot at a comeback.
Funny. I could have sworn intellectuals claiming liberalism has been dead since the end of the First Great War. Which I agree with. Since that time, what we take to be liberalism is closer to progressive socialism.
Conservatism is not dead since it never really attained the great influence liberalism (even in the form of the FDR's of this world) enjoyed.
Personally, I find conservative intellectualism (in the form of essays) more interesting and challenging than liberal ones.
All liberals do is react. 'Yeah but conservatives said this, libertarians do that' in defending a position.
Just my impression.
"Personally, I find conservative intellectualism (in the form of essays) more interesting and challenging than liberal ones."
Exactly right - that's because, unlike our progressive and proven ways, fiction is always a better read.
I'm serious. No one wants to read about how the great institutions of our advancement function - they are boring. Plus, it's much easier to poke holes in human behavior than it is to realize what a exalted perch we all (modern western humans) sit upon.
if its progressive, then its unproven.
its not progress if its a proven way to do things, its just business as usual.
our institutions that were once for advancement have been turned into net drains on our economy, the draconian laws and regulations they enforce cripple the free market and ruin the concept of capitalism.
no craig, modern progressivism has only ensured our progression into slaves of the state which is really regressive since we were there already in 1776.
Your system has been being used since FDR and has been an abysmal failure only increasing in its failure rate as its more vehemently pushed upon the rest of us who aren't blinded by religion, yes even a super cool progressive atheist like you worships a God, its just that yours is named government.
The conservative Tag was hijacked by the Militarist & Imperialist. A true American conservative is neither. "Govt is a burden to the people" - Thomas Jefferson 1805. Now we are talking real Conservative with a capital C.
"Battling Nancy Pelosi"
I strongly suggest a cross, holy water, and garlic.
Wooden stake. Don't forget the wooden stake. And a hammer. And the stake better be really hard wood.
It might work. i'm certain she hasn't seen really hard wood in 50 years,
KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!
I hope John Dennis will win this time. It's time to give what Nancy "Wicked witch of the west" Pelosi desserve.
I guess it's a good opportunity for a flashback clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7jJI1cfEgc
If you want to see how far we will fall (barring a near-miraculous reversal of course), here's a look at how things are turning out under a leader valorized by many in our ruling class and their courtiers, sycophants, and fellow travelers. And, yeah, he's still in charge, so even this level of degradation is no guarantee of change.

Why does Reason call these interviews Reason TV ?
I have never seen them on my TV. Is there some channel I don't know about that they play on ?
It's Reason WebVideo, or sumpin.
Yeah, not only that but I got more views on my "see how low my pants can go" sing along.

Good for Mr. Dennis! He has found the trail that leads out of the wilderness that has engulfed the Republican party since the reign of George W. Bush. I truly hope that he will vanquish Pelosi, and end her big spending career forever.
Same odds as the tooth fairy putting a powerball lottery ticket under your pillow.
Or, about the same odds as you flapping your arms and attaining upward momentum by doing so.
So, you are happy to see someone as staunchly anti-freedom and anti-constitution as Nancy-pants continue to hold office?
would it kill you lefties to put up someone who enjoys peace love and freedom? or are you confused as to who she really is?
VicRattlehead|9.5.14 @ 12:24PM|#
..."or are you confused as to who she really is?"
Not confused; abysmally stupid
It's kind of an academic point, since the GOP will never become libertarian.
you know what party is great for libertarian ideas?
Gee, no craig showing up this evening to again prove lefties can't read? I am disapoint!
