"People generally just want to be left alone and they want to make their own decisions," says Roger Custer, the executive director of America's Future Foundation (AFF). AFF bills itself as the "premiere network of liberty-minded young professional leaders," with an emphasis on targeting millennials. 

"[Millennials] are still looking for ideas and solutions, especially as they become taxpayers and fully functioning citizens independent of their parents and no longer students. We are the group they can come to." 

Custer recently sat down with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie to discuss AFF, what issues are most important to millennials, the points of friction between conservatives and libertarians, and why he remains optimistic.

Interesting how there is always a claim that conservatives and libertarians share a broad agreement on economic issues. This agreement never translates into political cooperation. Perhaps the agreement is far too shallow to be useful.

Team Red has a lousy record with patronage spending by the government at local, state & federal levels. When you dig down the shared principles get pushed aside by the politics. Team Red in the end wants power more than it wants small government.

Leaving Team Red aside, the problem with conservatives is that they are stupid. I have come to realize that the overwhelming majority of conservatives are as dumb as the left makes them out to be. Even when they are smart enough to agree with their libertarian betters, they are more interested in going insane over Muslims, immigrants, or gay marriage or whatever. We should tactically use liberals and conservatives to our advantage when the time and place is right, but there is nothing for us to gain from any kind of 'alliance' commitment.

I think I would agree that conservative leadership is stupid. When it comes to ignorant every group is infested. Yes, even libertarians. The 'true scotsman' nonsense won't wash. You cannot vote the dummies off the island.

I've always loathed the fake mustache meme. I'm not in the millenial generation, but I'm only a couple years older, yet I just don't get it. Also, get off my lawn.

Many do. But a fair number of people want to not leave people alone and want to make decisions for them. And they have so much more energy and desire to do so than people have energy for keeping these types at bay. And that's the overall problem. People who just want to be left alone don't want to spend 75% of their time keeping assholes off their back. The people who don't want to leave you alone are perfectly fine with spending 100% of their time figuring out how to control you.

It's hard to fight obsessives, because they don't care about anything else. And you do.

There are so many good quotes about how evil the people are who just know what's best for you that it's hard to pick one. I bet they all make this board in most weeks.
What kills me is that there's just no reasoning with a person like that. They can never understand that people want to be left alone or that maybe their solution isn't best for everyone. They just feel so hard that it will help.

a fair number of people simply do not believe that other people are capable of making the "right" decisions. Why, they'll eat fast food or smoke weed or drink beer or own guns or buy SUVs or whatever else.

In a just world, I would not need to spend 75% of my time dealing with such assholes. I would only need to draw a beed and fire twice. The second shot would be to make sure the poor dear was not suffering.

People don't generally don't want to be left alone. They want some benevolent government (an oxymoron) to tell them what food is safe, what banks are safe, what wars are just etc. You overestimate the amout of laziness in people. Of course by ceding their judgement to sociopaths they get thumped in the end.
