Video Q/A with Gamer-Congressman Jared Polis (D-Colo.)
Rep. Jared Polis represents the 2nd District of Colorado. A conventional Democrat in some respects, he also supports many causes that matter to libertarians: legalizing marijuana and hemp, restraining NSA surveillance, reforming copyright and patent laws, and making space for the virtual currency Bitcoin.
His background as a businessman is in Internet commerce and his background as a child of the 1980s is video games. Indeed, Polis is not just a congressman but an avid gamer. And when legislation such as the Stop Online Piracy Act threatened gaming culture and free expression more generally, he asked gamers to help him put the proposal on ice.
Reason's Scott Shackford recently sat down with Polis in his Washington, D.C. office to discuss video games, his positions on surveillance, and why he thinks gamers skew libertarian. Read Shackford's profile of Polis in the June issue of Reason magazine.

Jared Polis is the man!
Where was he drafted?
He was drafted into rounding up Jews, but upon reflection it turned out to be the happiest time of his life.
he also supports many causes that matter to libertarians poll well.
I'll just leave this here.
Start working at home with Google! Just work for few hours. I earn up to $500 per week. It's a great work at home opportunity. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. Linked here http://www.Pow6.com
Wonder what his XBL s/n is
Mine is Metalstorm9 if anyone wants to hit me up
He's actually primarily a PC gamer, not a console gamer. I don't think he even has an Xbox.
The last console I owned was an Atari 2600. Received my first computer in 1979 and haven't looked back. Mainly a simulator, strategy and tactical, 4X player
You a PC gamer?
I went from computers to consoles and now back to computers. Oddly, I have a lot of the same taste in games as Rep. Polis.

Wizardry!!!
Nothing wrong with that. I hate the console/PC debate. Can't we all just agree that gaming is great, no matter the platform?
That said, I typically do prefer PC, but I'll play anything.
I'm both. They can coexist. PC gaming is more powerful in that your visual experience can be much better, but it's also considerably more expensive.
Wow. He not only understands we're not Republicans, he even grasps (at least some) of the differences between libertarians & an-caps.
Great, but who the hell would waste their hard-earned Dogecoins by giving them to a politician?
I'm glad the FCC approves and signed off on freedom. Let it ring!
But before we go totally wild west, what's the FEC's position on bitcoin?
I'm glad the FCC approves and signed off on freedom. Let it ring!
You talking about net Neutrality and the Netflix "deal"?
I am not so sure. Now the FCC wants Internet providers to inform them when ever they do something which the FCC thinks is not Net Neutral...essentially putting in a government required permit whenever an ISP rolls out new services or even changes them.
An ISP will have no idea what the FCC thinks Net Neutrality is so basically any little change must be reported.
When the FCC was ever granted that power is beyond my understanding. Congress sure as hell never handed them that kind of regulatory power.
They're a roving agency doing good works. Constitutional!
Stop Online Privacy Act? Really?
More and more leftists, particularly "elite" progressives, actually think it should be illegal to use pseudonyms on the web.
It would make it a lot easier for them to silence dissenters (or worse).
Except as far as I am aware, it was Stop Online Piracy.
Fixed it. Somebody e-mailed me about that yesterday and I thought they were referring to my magazine piece. I couldn't find the error.
"You see that door marked "pirate"? You think a pirate lives back there?"
A mindless statist who likes weed and tech and knows slightly more about libertarianism than most. Fuck him.
Best Democrat I has seen in a long time.
I agree.
But still a turd wrapped in a fancy ribbon.
We should make every politician play a couple hours of Crusader Kings 2 and record it to judge how they respond to medieval political conflicts and disagreements with feudal lords. Somehow I think there would be a lot of people assassinating their second and third children so they wouldn't have to give up power under Gavelkind succession. Democrats would probably complain about being unable to set feudal taxes to high immediately, Republicans would complain about low levies, and libertarians would be eaten by the Big Blue Blob.
But where does he stand on Gamergate?
...or would he rather talk about abortion?
Or taking your guns and your money.
Libertarian-ish Democratic
There's something very wrong with that phrase. Just because the guy wants to smoke some herb while he's gaming and doesn't want the NSA recording it does not make him libertarian-ish.
I would place a large bet that the next time the Democrats write up some slimey rights abusing, money grabbing legislation that isn't to do with the aforementioned topics but that is just as abusive to civil rights, this guy votes lockstep with them.
The Libertarian-ish bar for Democrats seems to be lower than for Republicans. Like they're the special needs kids of political freedom. "Good job, you didn't arrest someone for buying a slurpee! Gold star!"
