Jailing Photogs and Smokers, Outlawing Chipotle! Plus Halle Berry! (Nanny of the Year, 2013)
At Reason TV's 5th Annual Nanny of the Year Awards, we recognize those who devote their lives to telling us how to run ours! The nominees for 2013 are trailblazers who insist on breaking barriers that would have been politically impossible to confront just a short time ago.
Why stop at banning smoking in public places? Let's criminalize the dirty deed and throw smokers behind bars, says Oregon State Rep. Mitch Greenlick. (Greenlick also champions prison reform, declaring that we need a "more rational way to decide who gets imprisoned.")
Why stop at cracking down on traditional fast food joints like McDonald's? Let's kick it up a notch and outlaw "fast casual" restaurants like Chipotle, says Eastchester, New York Supervisor Anthony Colavita. (Eastchester is "a very upscale community," Colavita explains. "You can go get your sandwich in Larchmont. We aren't going to cheapen the town with fast food or these formula fast-quick casual places.")
While we're at it, let's make photography a crime! After all, celebrities deserve to be protected from the annoying aspects of their life choices, like dealing with the paparazzi, and anyhow we'd really be doing it (all together now!) for the children (well, for the children of celebrities and politicians, at least), says our first bonafide A-list nominee--actor, humanitarian, and lobbyist Halle Berry.
All our nominees recognize that they stand on the shoulders of giants, giants like the recently termed out New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whom we salute with a (sort of) lifetime achievement award.
Kick off awards season with the awards show that's 99 percent shorter than all the rest!

"We are Eastchester. That's who we are and we're not going to change."
Who's this "we" he's talking about? Does he have a very highbrow mouse in his pocket? And it should be noted for the record that Halle Berry showed her titties in Swordfish.
Everything changes. We try to stop it. That's why we have paint.
Progressives hate change.
Ironic, ain't it ?
(Greenlick also champions prison reform, declaring that we need a "more rational way to decide who gets imprisoned.")
Obviously, people who do things Greenlick doesn't like should be in jail.
Yeah man, everything is subjective anyway, man. There is no such thing as objective reality; therefore, to declare anything a crime is just a matter of arbitrary, subjective whims. How can anyone declare anything to be a crime, man? Anyone should do whatever he whimsically feels like doing, since the feelz are all that matters. /sarc
It really is subjectivism all the way down with you guys. Far from being outsiders to the absurd errors of philosophy (past and present), you are entirely consistent products of them.
If that is all he said, then he'd get thumbs up at this site. The problem is suggesting it is rational to imprison tobacco users.
Well done. Woulda been great splicing in some of her most memorable/comical acceptance speech moments, but maybe next time.
Halle Berry was in Cat Woman. Halle Berry was in Cloud Atlas. Her most celebrated roll was going soft core in Monster's Ball.
Given she picks her scripts, and she picks crap like those?obviously pretty low-wattage upstairs in Halle's world, I mean we're talking fruit battery levels of current here.
She shouldn't worry about the pappos either, because at her age etc. soon her body will be interesting as her brain, and she can sigh with relief when nobody pays attention to her any more.
Is it wrong that I want to punch that commentator in the face when she says, "taking a stand, I like that!" ?
Your only error is not acting on it.
Don't really understand Reason's animus towards nannies or how a profession dedicated to the care of children is so contemptible. Can't say I've actually known any nannies, but I confess to having a rather positive image of them, helping out busy parents get on with their lives.
Reason didn't create this meme.
The objection is the suggestion that like nannies' charges, we are all children (somehow exempting the state "nannies")
"we are all children"
We are all certainly capable of acting and thinking like children from time to time.
I would prefer a succession of endowed and viable wet nurses throughout life to forever scolding nannies.
Bill Clinton, bipolar and manic, apparently needs both.
as of jan. 1st in Illinazi, it will be a crime for you to toss a cigarette butt out the window of your car. first 2 offenses include fines and a search of your vehicle. 3rd offense is a felony.
cruel and unusual? NOT IF YOU ARE A DIRTY, DIRTY SMOKER.

He takes a stand, but he squats when he pees.
Is he going to tell all the people in Mexico that their burritos are unhealthy 'fast' food? That's right, he'll just tell them not to live in East Chester, that's not who we are.
