"If we are lending money that ostensibly we don't have to kids who have no hope of making it back in order to train them for jobs that clearly don't exist, I might suggest that we've gone around the bend a little bit," says TV personality Mike Rowe, best known as the longtime host of Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs, in this ReasonTV interview excerpt.

Mike Rowe did a Dirty Jobs episode at a company that I helped start. The show was filmed in Northern California at an abandoned vertical mine shaft that my company closes to the public. The mine was closed with a foam plug about ten feet thick and then covered over with about four feet of dirt. Mike worked with Ed ("safety Ed"). I wasn't there, but it looked like a lot of fun.

Mike just seems like a really cool dude that you would enjoy hanging out with, and that is the secret to his success, I think.

Somebody linked to Rowe's blog a while ago; it was a piece about honest work and creating value. I was so impressed, I forwarded it to my dad and my brother (who has two sons in college).

I never paid much attention to him before, but I'm a fan. I still don't watch the show, though.

Some of the shows are pretty interesting, although it's obvious most people wouldn't pick these jobs given the choice--which I think is Rowe's whole point. He wants us to realize that a highly industrialized society requires people willing to get their hands dirty to keep it running.

It's refreshing because there's not a hint of condescending "white professor's burden" that you hear when academics pretend to give a shit about the working classes.

Mike Rowe is spot on about the trade jobs.

I did selection and training for maintenance and machine operators in manufacturing for many years. We would recruit heavily the bright, mechanical high school kids who, nevertheless did only so-so academically in school--often times they were athletes. Invariably the ones who would work out, would quit to go to college because their girlfriend, mother, family in general convinced them they could "do better". These were good jobs that lead into supervisory and high skill jobs paying high 80's and 90's if the kid (25-30 year-olds) were willing to work hard and apply themselves. Couldn't get these young guys to stay.

Industrial maintenance guys are gold to a factory. They are the ones that really keep these places going (think MacGyver Types) and these guys get into 6 figures very fast if they are good. They can name their ticket.
