Is Government Bureaucracy Failing Our Veterans?
Massive Veteran's Affairs Backlog Causing Distress Among the Wounded
Over the last 12 years, more than two million Americans have been deployed to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. But for thousands who return home with injuries, another battle is just beginning - this time, with the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA).
Upon enlistment, service members are promised that, should a service-related injury occur, the US government will provide them with care and financial compensation. The VA is responsible for providing this care but have been unable to render these services in a timely manner. The average wait time for a veteran to receive his or her benefits is one year.
President Obama sounded the alarm during a speech in August 2010, stating that it was the country's "moral obligation" to provide veterans with timely compensation. Under VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, the Obama administration promised that all claims would be processed within 125 days and with a 98 percent accuracy rating by the year 2015.
Despite Obama's speech, the backlog continued to grow, reaching a peak of nearly 900,000 pending claims with 70 percent backlogged in March of 2013. This past August, the numbers dipped slightly: nearly 800,000 pending claims with 63 percent backlogged.
The administration points to the August numbers as a sign of improvement, but reports of processing errors reveal a poor quality of work, with mistake in 30 percent or more of the claims that they process. Unfortunately for those waiting for assistance, when a mistake is made, the veteran must appeal. Once an appeal is filed, the average waiting time for the veteran is another four years.

I think the government should be required to fix veterans healthcare before they claim the awesomeness of single payer.
Well, the VA is more akin to the NHS in the UK.

Why do you hate veterans so much?
For better or worse, the fumbleforks in government have an obligation to help these former GIs.

I have avoided the VA like a MRSA infection. And so I shall, always.
I tell every progressive that wants to see how glorious their "universal healthcare" idea is to find a vet and spend the day with them down at a VA hospital. So far, all I've heard back is "fuck you".
At that point, I figured they must have taken my advice.
This is actually a good analogy. Not only is the treatment poor, there are many vets who are not disabled who still get VA disability. Every time I talk to a fellow veteran who brags about their non-disability disability payment I want to hurl.
Terrible facilities stocked with all the bureaucratic "my hands are tied" "so-and-so deals with that", and "go to the back of the line" one expects from incompetent hacks that couldn't handle the private sector.
There has been a lot of gaming the system with VA disability claims. It bothers me also when other vets brag about what I think are BS claims for which they're paid, particularly questionable PTSD situations. Resources are finite. When someone is in there hamming it up for their psych eval to get paid, they're taking away resources (particularly the time of medical professionals) from those vets who legitimately need help.
Hopefully the thoughts of the government using them up and fucking them over will run through the minds of anyone thinking of joining the military. When everyone knows the promises are hollow they'll stop signing up.
The military is not the guilty party.
The lazy slobs in the bureaucracy should be the ones that get depleted.
One thing that a lot of people (including libertarians) make the mistake in logic is the belief that the military and the government are two separate entities
The VA doesn't just handle disability payments, they handle pension payments to vets and their surviving spouses.
The firm I work for assisted an elderly client in applying for her deceased husband's VA pension benefits for his service in WWII. It took 20 months to process a simple claim. The poor lady died before the check was finally issued!
??? ????????? I just got paid $858o working off my computer this month. And if you think that's cool, my divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over $9k her first month. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less. This is what I do,

If the government is overwhelmed by 900,000 claims, what makes the Progressive scum think the government will be able to provide for over 300,000,000?
my co-worker's half-sister makes $81 hourly on the computer. She has been fired for 5 months but last month her pay was $20214 just working on the computer for a few hours. hop over to this website.....

Remarkably, perhaps luckily, my fellow vets haven't taken their service-related skills and applied them to any part of the VA. I won't bother with my tale of woe as it's completely pointless to ever expect that system to be fixed.

Here is an idea. We have the Peace Corps. We have the Job Corps. Why not the War Corps? Instead of the Armed Forces as we know them, we could have one combined military and naval organization called the War Corps, consisting of highly paid people who are ready to wage war against all of our enemies real and imagined. One uniform will do for all, and I suggest some new ranks and rank insignia. So, get your ideas ready for this.
Veterans are always hopeless. They need more care and help.
