Hope For a Better Drug Policy: "America's Longest War" Panel Discussion in NYC
"The best drug policy we could have is one that reduces the harms of drugs and reduces the harms of government drug control policies. We are turning a corner," says Ethan Nadelmann, founder and executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. Nadelmann, along with Mary O'Grady of the Wall Street Journal, John Tierney of the New York Times, and New York City Council Member Melissa Mark Vivierto (D-Manhattan/Bronx), took part in a panel discussion following a New York City screening of the film "America's Longest War" on September 24th, 2013.
The film's director, Reason TV Senior Producer Paul Feine, led the conversation that focused on drug prohibition, its terrible costs in America and abroad, and hopeful signs that the United States will move towards a more sensible drug policy.
"America's Longest War" is the first feature-length documentary produced by Reason and is currently available for purchase on Amazon.

I know this is a serious subject, but I had to laugh in the first few seconds.
I hope the rest of the video doesn't include any more H and R cliches. I'll immediately shut the thing off if the word "monocle" appears.
It's cocktail parties all the way down.
They don't want to legalize drugs. You start decriminalizing drugs, then inner city crime goes down. Gun violence goes down. Prison populations go down. You stop wasting money for stupid reasons. The whole country looks less scary, and all due to a more limited government. What then, will people think of their need of politicians?
The drug war must go on, so we can manufacture fear and hold power. It's like the domestic version of the war on terror.
The thing is people who want to do drugs will. This is demand. When there is demand there will be supply. When you use force and violence to constrict supply, you get more violence. Drug use is barely affected by any of this. Just a death spiral of violence begetting more violence. But hey, it justifies massive amounts of government spending and use of forces, so what's not to like?
