MTV Libertarians: Kennedy, Kurt Loder Talk Politics & the Golden Age of MTV
Featuring Courtney Love, Rod Stewart, Rudy Giuliani, and others.
"More and more people are realizing that both political parties suck balls," says former MTV VJ and current Reason contributor Kennedy. "And there has to be a better alternative, which is the consistent political philosophy of libertarianism."
Kennedy was joined by her former MTV colleague (and fellow Reason contributor) Kurt Loder for a uncensored chat about politics and the golden age of music television at New York City's Museum of Sex on July 31, 2013. The occasion was the release of Kennedy's new memoir, The Kennedy Chronicles: The Golden Age of MTV Through Rose-Colored Glasses.
The two MTV alums reminisce about the time Courtney Love started throwing the contents of her purse at Loder's head while he was doing a live interview with Madonna; the 1994 Video Music Awards, when Kennedy almost got fired for pretending to fellate a microphone while Rudy Giuliani was on stage; when Kennedy offended Rod Stewart by asking him backstage if it was true that he once had quarts of semen pumped from his stomach; and how Loder introduced Kennedy to libertarianism by suggesting she read Ayn Rand's Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology.

Rand didn't like Big "L" libertarians, IIRC.
She wasn't crazy about ancaps, either.

my classmate's step-mother makes $74/hr on the laptop. She has been fired for seven months but last month her pay was $18454 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read more on this web site .............. buzz90.com
It's pretty hard to believe, but it looks as though we're about to be taken into yet another war on the basis of bogus propaganda and false pretexts.
The late 1800s had "Remember the Maine", more recently we had the Iraq "Curveball", and now we're about to bomb the crap out of Syria on the basis of a so-called "chemical weapons attack" that almost certainly wasn't one.
Some things really never do change.
You don't think the economy is going to fix itself, do ya?
Well, do ya, punk?
I've always been confused. Is it the "broken (window fallacy)" or the "(broken window) fallacy".
Economics is so hard. Krugman is too smart to lower himself to my level.
Won't someone throw some dollars my way to help with my broken brain?
a so-called "chemical weapons attack" that almost certainly wasn't one.
Against getting the US involved, but it most certainly was a chemical attack Mr. Jones.
Nothing personal Kennedy, but the Golden Age of MTV had already come and gone by the time you arrived on the scene.
I was thinking the same thing. I never got the Kennedy "quirky girl" act. She's 100 times cooler as a grownup. Martha Quinn was the MTV golden age.
Then again, the "golden age" of MTV featured a lot of Flock of Seagulls and Haircut 100. Yeesh.... I'd love to re-purpose those brain cells.
Meh. A Flock of Seagulls is one of the greatest synthpop albums ever.
Really underrated band.
I'm pretty sure that's the only time I've ever seen anyone call Flock of Seagulls underrated.
Yeah, I didn't even know who she was before Reason.
The turning point was when they started showing Rap videos other than Walk This Way w/Run DMC.

Yep. "Yo! MTV Raps" was the beginning of the end.
I'm having trouble with the concept of a golden age for MTV in general.
I watched it a lot in 1991, but then I got a job.
yes. I only knew of Kennedy from reason- where did she come from? VeeJay, you say. No MTV was irrelevant once the self-referential "Money For Nothing" ceased being in its rotation.
Let's hope she never interviews Richard Gere.
Two words; Martha Quinn.
Rod rumor probably started because he passed out just before he was due to go on stage at a Greensboro, NC around 79 -80. Then delayed so he could get some food in him.
DON'T TALK SHIT ABOUT AMANDA BYNES!
Why is Reason gushing about a cable channel from the past rather than their normal practice of gushing about all the satellite channels and the decline of the networks going on right now? This seems rather....reactionary.
Everyone seems to react, a guy nicknamed FlannelBoy rant about when MTV jumped the shark. However I have to agree he got a point there.

It's amazing how seemingly everyone in the country knew that Rod Stewart rumor. That had to be in what, 1980 or something?
I remember hearing it in I guess 5th or 6th grade. Elementary school anyway.
Nice and interesting article. I enjoyed the reading. Keep up the good work and well done.

No mention of the crazy uncle of the MTV days, Adam Curry? He's (fairly) libertarian and hosts an OK podcast called No Agenda. Would like to know if Kurt had any influence on him or if he had any influence on Kennedy.
Love started throwing the contents of her purse at Loder's head while he was doing
