Marijuana Legalization's Bright Future with Rob Kampia
The future looks bright for marijuana legalization, according to Rob Kampia, Executive Director of the Marijuana Policy Project, who predicts that Alaska and Rhode Island will follow Colorado and Washington as states that fully legalize marijuana for adults.
Kampia spoke with Reason's Matt Welch at Freedom Fest, where he predicted that legalization would spread across the U.S. via ballot initiatives, liberal state legislatures, and with the help of Congresspeople like Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), who recently sponsored a bill to immunize pot users and sellers from federal prosecution in those states that have chosen to legalize marijuana.
Held each July in Las Vegas, Freedom Fest is attended by around 2,000 limited-government enthusiasts and libertarians. Reason TV spoke with over two dozen speakers and attendees and will be releasing interviews over the coming weeks.

Question, how many people do you personally know who is not a politician or hack journalist who think pot should remain illegal? I know maybe one or two people who fit that description.
A few. And they didn't use to think that. Guess what happened? They had kids and it apparently made them retarded. Because what they all will say when you ask them why they think pot should remain illegal is 'Well, I have kids'.
Well, I have a kid and I think it should be as legal as alcohol, everywhere. I don't want my son smoking while he is a kid, but then again I don't want him drinking either. I hope to teach him enough judgement that he can make those calls on his own when he is older. BTW..I don't smoke myself (anymore) but see no reason that adults can't make that decision for themselves.
Many. I've tried to reason with them and it's useless.
For some it's a moral issue. Drugs are bad because they're bad. Doesn't matter that it's a victimless crime. Drugs are immoral.
Some just don't like people who use drugs and want them locked up because they're losers.
And one guy, a total liberal, cries "Externalities!" as he chugs a homebrew.
None of them know that I've been smoking the stuff fairly regularly for the better part of twenty five years.
If they found out then it would not change their opinion about marijuana, it would change their opinion about me. It would be as if they discovered I was a rapist or a murderer, because that's how they view drugs. They're bad. Period.

Legalize MJ? What would we do with all those unnecessary DEA agents and correctional facility officers?
Think of the jobs, man!
Don't worry we still have coke, meth, heroin, LSD, Ecstasy, perscription pills etc. to keep our jobs safe.

There was no reason for this interview to be so damn short.
The last thing that Kampia said was about difficult states like Mississippi. I wonder what he would've said about states where MPP has battled and lost on MMJ-- S. Dakota and Arkansas.
