Jeremy Scahill: Where are the Dems on Civil Liberties? "They're Nowhere"

"Where are all these serious Democrats who believe in civil liberties?" asks Jeremy Scahill, author of Dirty Wars, the provocative book that is now an award-winning documentary. "They're nowhere."

Scahill talked with Reason's Matt Welch about how congressional Democrats have abdicated their moral standing when it comes the domestic and foreign aspects of the war on terror. And how unexpected champions such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) have stepped up in their absence.

Progressives don't believe in civil liberties they be in the State. I don't really know what serious Democrats means in this context though. Does he mean centrist Democrats? In that case I'd point to Senator Wyden.

  I never could quite rationalize 'socialist' with 'civil liberties.'
  
  Aren't they mutually exclusive? Socialism demands things go into one big pot. In order to do that, you need a collective effort. Since human nature is what it is, most of it would have to be coerced.
  
  Doing that and then worrying about civil liberties is weird.

All of this confusion is due to people giving politicians credit for what they say, and not for what they do. It's easier for them to get away with it that way.

If a Democrat is elected in 2016, I predict a new war. If a Republican is elected, I predict an expansion of Obamacare.

Progressives and/or democrats want to project the image that they care about the plight of the downtrodden ? poor, minorities, disenfranchised women, immigrants ? but it is a mistake to conflate that with caring about civil rights in general. If you can be, by their perceptions, viewed as privileged they have no regard for any civil rights which you might wish to maintain for yourself.

Basically, they want payback for the injustices of society and nothing - not even the civil rights of any specific, individual minority ? should stand in their way.
