Reason-Rupe Poll: Congress Should Cut Spending, Forget Gun Control
Plus: 20 percent qualify as libertarian, Social Security is as popular as it is misunderstood.
Fifty-four percent of Americans say Congress should cut spending from current levels and 62 percent say Congress should forget about gun control and move on to other issues.
Social Security is widely popular, with 64 percent having a favorable view of the retirement portions of the program. But it's also widely misunderstood as an individual retirement account rather than a transfer payment financed by current tax dollars.
A plurality - 45 percent of respondents - still dislike Obamacare and one in five Americans qualifies as libertarian based on responses to questions about the role of the government in social and economic affairs.
Full details from the latest The Reason-Rupe Poll, a quarterly, national survey of 1,003 people via cell phones and landlines, are online here. Past results are also online.
Reason's Polling Director Emily Ekins spoke with Nick Gillespie about the results and the survey's uniquely interactive features of the poll, which allows for follow-up questions and deeper insights. For instance, when respondents learn that that future retirees are unlikely to receive back the amount of money they paid into Social Security, they become open to reforming an entitlement system whose trustees say is unsustainable in its current form.

OK, who is the imposter in the Izod shirt and what have you done with Gillespie?
like Ralph replied I'm in shock that people can earn $5358 in four weeks on the internet. did you see this link... http://WWW.UP444.COM
OK, who is the imposter in the Izod shirt and what have you done with Gillespie?
The Jacket is vacationing in the Bahamas and left Nick home to work.
"vacationing" huh? I'm pretty sure a secret op related to world domination is involved.
Nick "The Jacket" Gillespie.
What are you talking about? There's only one person in that video.
Someone stole over 300 grand from my paycheck during my working life.
I want it back. That's my money, no one else's.
I want to see the thieves in jail. I want their co-conspirators in jail. ...I'll also add 'damages' and gladly accept full and complete restitution, with the addition of the interest that money would've earned in the marketplace.
It was and is theft, pure and simple, and no one can convince me that it was anything less.
If you want them in jail then you had better do it since the ones in charge of jails today are not going to do it, they get a cut of the action.
$300k. That's all that they stole? Simple: steal it back and collect your 'entitlement'.
It's Robin Hood-ish: steal from the young and give to the old.
Service provider
Those who wouldn't prefer to have that stolen money returned in one large payment very likely went through life without being robbed.
Indeed. It is difficult to control one's "gun" in the presence of the lovely Ms. Ekins.

62 percent say Congress should forget about gun control and move on to other issues.
But ninety percent of Americans want sensible civilian disarmament!
MSNBC told me so.
Silly Brooks, the questioned is always referring to the hoi polloi which doesn't include the self. I don't understand why this obvious 'projection' isn't quantified into polls that ask these kinds of questions. One of the questions should always be: 'Do you excuse yourself from judgements you place on other unknown persons simply becase you know you are better than they?'- which if it isn't a yea, else the sample should be thrown out.
I always like "some people say" or worse yet "some people might say". I'd be like, when you can provide the names of "some people" I might answer your question.
But of course. Even I want sensible civilian disarmament: Those government workers who are civilians should be disarmed, leaving guns solely in the hands of the military and private citizens.
😀
yeah, cos the military or vigilantes doing police work has worked so very well wherever it's been tried
But ninety percent of Americans want sensible civilian disarmament!
And all twelve (12) of them showed up to protest across the street from the 86,000 NRA members at the Houston convention.
What was the question(s) you based this on?
"Do you like liberty?"
I'm betting one in five do not self-identify as libertarian, as I doubt one in five even know what a libertarian is.
I guess I should WTFV before commenting.
I'm pretty sure we're all guilty of premature articulation.
This usually doesn't happen I swear!
Funny enough, about ten years ago that was generally my experience...nobody had any idea what a libertarian was. Now it's about one or two out of every five I talk to about politics who seem to know and be familiar with it. Most of them (assuming they're not progressive liberals) have a lot of respect for the ideology, even if they don't fully agree with it.
So yeah, I could see the 20% being accurate. I don't think, however, that it means that 20% would consider voting for Libertarian candidates for office, or for anyone other than a Republican or Democrat. But that's more because of how the system is set up.
I mean, when you strip away the propaganda and the bullshit, a lot of people will admit the State is morally wrong. But they fundamentally thanks IMO to the child indoctrination centers will not make that leap.
I just say that I don't think armed robbery is justified, no matter who is doing it or for what reasons. They can't really disagree with it, though some try with the whole "social contract!" or "democracy!" canards.
But they fundamentally thanks IMO to the child indoctrination centers will not make that leap.
Yep,
the sad truth is that brainwashing the young works. It's especially noticeable in small government conservatives that still support the drug war because drugs are uniquely evil or some such bullshit.
Charlotte. I just agree... Chris`s report is neat, I just got a brand new Mini Cooper after having earned $7723 this - 4 weeks past and would you believe, ten grand last munth. it's by-far the most financially rewarding Ive ever done. I began this 3 months ago and pretty much immediately started bringing in minimum $70, per/hr. I use the details on this website.....grand4.com

20% of Americans can't spell Libertarian.
They want someone else's taxes to pay for the taxed and regulated marijuana catering for their gay wedding reception.
Everyone's a libertarian on some things. It's the most maddening thing about being a libertarian. You can find common ground with nearly anyone, but then you have grin and bear it when they say something absolutely retarded.
because a libertarian can look in a mirror and see that he/she can be a douchebag. no one else can ever admit that. ever.
I take pride in being an asshole.
Careful. You never know who may be lurking. They might well take your admission wrong. Not naming names; that is very un-libertarianish.
I take pride in being a bigger asshole than you.
Yeah, everybody's a libertarian on shit that THEY like.
Everyone's a libertarian on some things.
Liberty is the 2nd highest value for a lot of people.
anyone can find common ground with anyone. it's not unique to libertarians.
i for one, like breathing air. never had many arguments on that one.
it's also what's likely to happen if you take two large competing ideologies and put them in a blender.
What happens when you expect the state to take care of all of your problems. And the state obliges.

All he wanted was a poptart!
On the bright side the entire community rightly thinks its absurd. That woman is being punished by society for being a putz.
Yet no word that the kid has been released and all charges dropped. The State wins, we lose.
62 percent say Congress should forget about gun control and move on to other issues.
There's not -one- thing that I want congress to "move on" to. Quite honestly, I'd be happy paying them to do absolutely nothing. Seriously, fuck them. Fuck them all. With Warty's dick.
There's some work I'd like to see them get to....like laying-off bureaucrats, privatizing services, and selling-off government assets.
Dismantling leviathon will require Congressional action.
Is a 'Women of Reason Calender' too much to hope for? Or a swimsuit edition?
Uh, are there 12 women of Reason?
We could get a couple of the guys to tuck.
I was hoping for de Rugy or Kennedy in a one-piece.
Bring back Lucy!
If you want to see them in swimsuits, you have to pay for the cruise.
I'll settle for "woman."
I'm betting one in five do not self-identify as libertarian, as I doubt one in five even know what a libertarian is.
I have a friend who is a small business owner. In conversation, a large percentage of the things he says could easily lead one to qualify him as at least libertarianISH, yet he self identifies as some sort of crypto-communist.
He voted for you-know-who twice, despite believing him to be a Republican in sheep's clothing.
I use OKCupid a lot and there have all sorts of political questions.
There are tons of women that politically would either be Libertarians or Republicans by the answers they give, but they almost all identify as Democrats. Even women who list Ayn Rand as one of their favorite authors do.
It's a branding problem, I guess.
Its a "what would my friends say" problem, which, yes, is a branding problem.
It's a horny dilemma, it is.
"When a U.S. citizen goes abroad to wage war against America -- and is actively plotting to kill U.S. citizens; and when neither the United States, nor our partners are in a position to capture him before he carries out a plot -- his citizenship should no more serve as a shield than a sniper shooting down on an innocent crowd should be protected from a SWAT team," Obama said.
And the faithful guzzle it all down, glug glug glug.
Is it possible our constitutional scholar has NEVER read the 5th amendment?
Let's see, might the constitution allow for trying him for treason in absentia and THEN you can use your new toys.
It's not like anyone thought of these dilemmas, like 200+ years ago...
"[A]ctively plotting to kill U.S. citizens" and being in a position to imminently kill them are two very different things that Obama is trying desperately to conflate.
No one who is in a desert in Yemen or some shithole mud hut in a shithole valley in AfPak can be said to be in an imminent position to attack America.
Yeah, I remember when Lincoln wouldn't let LeMay bomb Richmond and restricted air strikes to troops directly engaging the Union army for the same reason.
What part of Article 3, Section 3 does this shit-weasel not understand? And he tries to weasel out of it with the "and when neither the United States, nor our partners are in a position to capture him before he carries out a plot". Hey, Mr. President, you know who else fits your definition? Say hello to Mr. Drone - and, oh, sorry that Michelle, Malia, and Sasha were nearby.
So our military, intelligence, nor law enforcement agencies could apprehend these terrorists because they're too far out in the Yemeni/Somali/AfPak outback. Pray tell, Mr. President, how then they were in a position to attack us imminently?

So what exactly is the vegan objection to breast milk? How the fuck can that be against their fucking religion.
Oh wait, I just answered my own question.
Complete explanation
WHERE ARE THE VEGAN POLICE?!?!!!
Just for you.
...her?
YES!
My latest Arrested Development watch through I realized that the very first episode of Egg/Ann used a different actress: the girl who played Zoe Graystone on Caprica.
Michael Cera really can't carry a movie.
The should have cast the Culkin kid.
That's The Thing. Mary Elizabeth Winstead was actually the star and carrying that movie.
Kentucky distillery warns of a bourbon shortage
Better stock up.
Noooooooooooooo!
Son of a bitch! Buffalo Trace is our house bourbon. My roommate's bf burns through it like water. She just bought a handle to replace the two bottles he went through in as many weeks.
Or, y'know, be an adult and not drink bourbon.
Pistols at dawn.
The fuck?
I'm a scotch/whiskey guy. Hate Bourbon. Never touch the stuff. Rednecks shit in it Woodhouse. Rednecks shit in it.
Mental note: don't bring bourbon to Goldwater's cocktail parties.
Mental note:
Take bourbon to Goldwater's cocktail parties, shit in the scotch.
This has been common knowledge for a while.
There was a Bourbon glut in the 80s and lots of distillers aged the excess longer, creating these high end, long aged bourbons that boomed in popularity.
But, in the 90s they werent putting as much away to age long term because they didnt see that boom coming.
It requires pretty keen foresight to figure out how much bourbon to age for 18 or 21 or 24 years.
Illinois lawmakers approve plan to allow concealed carry for gun owners
It's a start.
You know what sort of headlines I'd love to wake up one morning and see? Headlines that would start restoring my hope?
"Texas Legislature unanimously passes constitutional carry bill; all previous weapons legislation nullified."
"United States Congress repeals PPACA."
"President Barack Obama impeached on charges of treason."
"Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York gets hit by large bus traveling at 70 miles per hour; all that remains is a puddle of entrails and blood."
Among many hundreds of others, of course.
Bloomburg gets hit by a Coke truck would make me LOL.
Bloomburg crushed by Giant Slurpee
Too easy.
To ensure the legacy he deserves, Bloomberg needs to spend the last decade of his life running around NYC naked save for a crimson cape.
Then he can get hit by a Coke truck. Or be mauled by one of the faux Disney characters in TS. Not picky.
That death sounds way to good and quick for Bloomberg.
About making a state preemption rule:
Really, dude? Jesus. Do people actually believe this shit?
To be fair, Quinn is a moron.
He's still the best governor we've had in about 20 years. At least he isn't actively stealing from us.
You know there's something seriously fucked up about the universe when a state's best governor in decades is a slavemaking sack of shit.
All the rest went to prison.
The streets of Vermont and Texas run red with blood because of all the shoot outs concealed carry enables.
The legislator who made that type comment during the KY concealed carry debates admitted he was wrong later, but still opposes concealed carry.
Really, dude? Jesus. Do people actually believe this shit?
It's been the core of the anti-CHL argument since the 1980s, when Florida's shall-issue law was going to leave blood flowing in the streets. They've used the "fenderbenders into firefights" argument every time a state considered shall-issue. Pilots carrying would flip out and shoot passengers. Off-duty/retired cops carrying nationwide would make mistakes and cost cities billions in liability. Carry in national parks would leave dead animals everywhere and run off terrified visitors. Terrorists would break into the Amtrak gun lockers and hijack trains. College students carrying would gun down profs and mistake innocent students for rapists.
They have so much invested in the gloom-n-doom that, despite decades of contrary evidence, they can't afford to let it go.
Is it necessarily the case that Reason Comments are the worst assortment of spasmotic drivel ever? The top comment is about Nick's shirt!
Turning to the *substance* of the article, I wonder if the pollsters are the least bit curious about respondents who grossly contradict themselves. For example:
"82 percent of those polled say consumers and stores should determine the types of shopping bags available, while 15 percent say the government should decide.
Sixty percent of Americans oppose banning plastic grocery or shopping bags, 37 percent approve of a plastic bag ban."
So, what's with the 18% who say there should be a ban, but government should not decide? I can only conclude that 18% of those polled are so irrational that they can't be consistent from one question to the next. Which would mean that there are as many total nincompoops as libertarians in the general population.
Or, maybe those are the libertarians, a little high on weed and delighting in toying with the interviewer's head.
Clearly you're new here. They weren't commenting on Nick's shirt. They were commenting on his lack of The Jacket.
God, Westmiller, this stuff is like Reason 101.
You seem awfully upset that internet comments aren't up to your standards.
Calm down, big guy. Also, it's 'spasmodic.' Misspelling the unnecessarily pretentious words you use to insult other people makes you look unnecessarily pretentious.
I'd say there are probably more total nincompoops. I take it on general faith that 40% of the population consists of idiots. A lot of people don't consider how one of their beliefs lines up with their other beliefs, which results in a lot of bizarre answers for polling questions. It's also why you can get totally different answers by slightly changing the wording of your question.
And why include "necessarily the case"?
I guess that kinda makes sense, in a 'I need to fill 5 pages for this english essay' sort of way.
Jesus.
Is bitching about the comments' section in the drinking game? If it isn't it totally should be.
DRINK!
"I guess that kinda makes sense, in a 'I need to fill 5 pages for this english essay' sort of way."
They took a decision.
or
They decided.
Most people are ignorant, but rationally so. It's only weirdos like us who put time and effort into scrutinizing our views on a subject that we can't exercise much power over.
The most rational thing to do is to pay attention to ballot measures and little else, and to treat government actions in the same way that you treat natural disasters: contingencies to deal with.
+1 Libertarian Stoicism
Misspelling the unnecessarily pretentious words you use to insult other people makes you look unnecessarily pretentious.
joez law.
My hope would be that the 18% want the store itself to ban? Or maybe, in a slightly less stupid than total cognitive dissonance, but still very stupid, the town? County?
I don't have much issue with small groups deciding on these things, that's how it should work.
Is it necessarily the case that Reason Comments are the worst assortment of spasmotic drivel ever?
Well, we are trying to be as good as 4chan/pol/, newfag.
"For a magazine called reason...."
I explained this the last time there was a comment thread on it; it's a voting-style paradox. Someone might favor a policy, but disfavor allowing gov't to decide that policy, because they might use that power to enact the opposite policy instead.
For instance, would you favor a ballot question to allow the keeping of ferrets in your state (if you were in a state currently disallowing them)? OK, but would you favor allowing voter initiatives generally? If you answer "yes" and "no" respectively, you're not necessarily a nincompoop.
Sometimes man you jsut have to rol lthat beautiful bean footage

@The Immaculate Trouser. Yes indeed!
Most people think that they think, but don't actually know how to. They're very gullible, believing most every thought they have without exploring to check on its validity.
That might be because, like exercise, thinking for yourself involves effort, it's hard work...
