WikiLeaks, Assange & the End of Secrecy: Alex Gibney on "We Steal Secrets"
"It's terribly important that we see the horrors of war, because then we know what's happening in our names," says Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney. "If that stuff is kept secret, then we're on our way to tyranny."
Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller sat down to talk with Gibney, the man behind Taxi to the Dark Side and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, about his latest documentary, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks, which opens on May 24.
Watch the interview above to find out why Gibney considers Bradley Manning a tragic hero, Julian Assange an egomaniac who "believes his own fiction," and Wikileaks and similar projects forces for liberation in an age of tyrannical despots abroad and a growing surveillance state at home.
Approximately 9:30.

Wow, thanks for a substantive and fairminded discussion of Assange. He blew it by overreaching and having no respect at all for govt. Same for Manning - the wide and indiscriminate exposure of information obviates their claims to want to right a specific injustice. And oh yeah, I'm very proud that we steal secrets. Assange and Manning should rot in jail for a long time - and I'm a libertarian, but one who understands the nation state order we live in.

A couple of other thoughts. I actually spent a lot of time analyzing the video you guys showed a short clip of at the end, the supposed killing of innocent civilians. The DoD released a longer version of the vid and explained how each decision was made. It was not an illegal or even inappropriate use of lethal force. Just moments before, the innocents were carrying RPGs and AKs, and were correctly perceived to be a threat to our forces in the area. Kill them 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Any combat soldier would have done the same
That the people doing so are a bit cavalier about it only says that we've asked these people to kill way too many people for us, not that they are somehow morally defective. When killing becomes routine, as it did in Iraq and also possible from relatively low risk positions like helicopters at a distance or using drones, missiles, aerial bombing, artillery - even some automatic weapons like the humble .50 cal machine guns, one becomes callous. A soldier who is seeing lots of his enemy die cannot give them the human consideration that we give each other in normal civilization. We train them to be that way. So we don't get to complain like innocent children when it's displayed for us so plainly. Yes, it is barbaric - but war is barbaric. Yes, we have a huge advantage - so what? If we can kill every one of our mortal enemies at a standoff with little risk to ourselves that is a good thing. Sigh, the emotions on this stuff really confuses people.
Notwithstanding all the rest of my blather, I did find reading the cables fascinating and horrifying. Of course I didn't read them all but I went through tons of them and that was the hair raising part of it. You see how corrupt we are in the deals we make with thugs who are rightfully hated by the people they oppress. You see how often the topic of energy or oil is part of our diplomatic efforts. 90% of the cables have the words oil or energy in them. What also struck me is the vast scope of it and what absurd little global busybodies we are. Is it any wonder that so much of the world hates us given how much we stick our beaks into their affairs?
One of the funny/sad incidents revealed was the whole cultural engagement project of the U.S. Embassy in Paris. The diplomats concluded that the French government wasn't doing enough to combat racism, so they launched their own initiative to engage 'youth' in the Banelieus (Muslim ghettos). We did so by promoting some dopey U.S. action film and having the star make an appearance at a cultural event in one of these warzone kind of neighborhoods.Imagine Arnold Schwarzeneger visiting Bed Stuy to promote a new Film. And it's not even our country. This was one of many similar incidents. This is the level of our arrogance - these dogooder freakshow human beings who run our govt now actually think its their business as U.S. diplomats to try and reduce immigrant focused bigotry in France.
But I could have lived without knowing this. While some good was done, many anti-Iraq war types have simply used this as "ammo" in their fight, quite thoughtlessly actually. Blind 'activism' is no more morally admirable than blind patriotism. Sadly, Manning and Assange blew a chance to do something like this with integrity when it was right in their grasp.
