3D Printing, Guns, & Sex Toys: Q&A with 3D Systems CEO Avi Reichental
"Craftsmanship has been democratized, in the sense that anybody who can get a file can make a gun potentially from undetectable materials," says 3D Systems CEO Avi Reichental, "the reality is that you could have done it 10 years ago if you were a good machinist, but now you don't have to be a machinist you just need the file."
ReasonTV's Tracy Oppenheimer caught up with Reichental at the 2013 Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, CA to discuss the present day realities and future possibilities of 3D printing.
Reichental notes that some of the more controversial items may fall in the realm of sex toys and pornography, but this is to be expected. "We live in a society that [has] lots of brightness, and there is also lots of darkness, and there are lots of shades of grey. My sense is that 3D printing is going to mirror and reflect all elements of society."

"Did you notice what went wrong in that scene? Ordinarily, Billy would work hard to make money from his paper route. Then he'd use the money to buy dinner for Mavis, thus earning the slim chance to perform the reproductive act. But in a world where teens can date robots, why should he bother? Why should anyone bother? Let's take a look at Billy's planet a year later. Where are all the football stars? And where are the biochemists? They're trapped! Trapped in a soft, vice-like grip of robot lips. All civilization was just an effort to impress the opposite sex...and sometimes the same sex."
DON'T DATE ROBOTS!
"Ordinary human dating. It's enjoyable and it serves an important purpose. But when a human dates an artificial mate, there is no purpose. Only enjoyment. And that leads to...tragedy."
Im making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do, ... http://www.daz7.com
You might as well, since you're the reason why there are no libertarian women.
I'm responsible for at least 3 libertarian women.
How many Objectivist women? 😉
Since Rand didn't put up with even minor differences, there are no Objectivist people, much less women.
Admit it: you're just another God-damned Mozart lover!
as Leslie replied I can't believe that a mom can earn $9902 in 1 month on the computer. did you see this webpage http://www.fox86.com
yeah, but the things she had to do in front of that camera...you couldn't pay enough to do those things she did.
I hope they didn't print that guitar from illegal wood like Gibson.
Sen. Leland Yee (D-Calif.) [called] for laws that would track the 3-D printers themselves as well as people with access to them, [stating] that background checks, mandatory serial numbers and even a registration process could all be included.
This is probably part of the near future of 3D printing.
3D Printer Regulation Proposed: Democrats Fear Criminals Printing Guns
By "criminals", they mean "the peasants".
Buy one now while they're legal.
Just remember to register or surrender it when required.
Preferably one that can replicate itself.
I still don't think so. Some nutcase state legislator always proposes the worst thing you can think of which has no chance of going anywhere. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but there is no prize for being right in your gloomy predictions, so someone might as well be.
Whoa, sex toys? OK I like the sound of that!

AnonBot, you need to get out more.
Soon all the cheap garbage we bought at Walmart and imported from China we will be able to print at home. Bad news for Walmart and China.
I will predict that States will try to put a "sales" tax on printed objects to recoup "lossed revenue" from shit Walmart isn't selling anymore.
lossed,gah.
One day your kid will print a Spongebob Squarepants water bottle and your printer will report it to the government, You will get charged a sales tax on the bottle, based not upon $1 worth of material used but on "retail value" which will be a thing determined by the government. Sort of like when you register a 12 year old $800 Toyota and the DMV tells you that it's tax value is based on a bluebook value of $14,000.
Which is why we all need to get one of those 83 dollars an hour job working at home through Google, that I've read so much about.
my neighbor's step-sister makes 77 an hour on the laptop. She has been without work for 7 months but last month her paycheck was 14207 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Go to this web site and read more ............http://www.Mojo55.com
The Govt will now need even more power to supervise the "net" now that people can easily uphold their 2nd amendment rights without filling out Govt forms and giving them your private property for that "right"...
Why doesn't the 1st amendment get treated this way? Why doesn't the Govt require a "license" to speak? After all, "speaking can be used in a dangerous manner"? Why doesn't the Govt tax me per word? Or even better limit the amount of words I can "use" to 7?
What part of the 27 words don't you understand?
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
What the hell is "dark" and "grey" about sex toys and pornography? Apparently they aren't using the toys correctly.
my classmate's mother makes $86/hr on the laptop. She has been fired for 6 months but last month her paycheck was $12984 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read more here http://www.sea12.com
