What Kind of a Monster Bans Chipotle?! (Nanny of the Month, April 2013)
Meddling is their business and business is good. This month's slate of control freaks includes a Connecticut pol who's bent on regulating young earlobes and a Maryland public school district that would forbid adults from hugging kids other than their own children.
But this time the Nanny of the Month comes to us from Eastchester, New York where a local official wasn't satisfied with outlawing traditional fastfood joints like McDonald's and Burger King. He decided to kick it up a notch and shield locals from "fast casual" restaurants like Panera Bread and Chipotle (and to think these newcomers, with their earth tones and organic offerings, thought they could stave off the taste police!).
Presenting the Nanny of the Month for April 2013: Eastchester Supervisor Anthony Colavita!

So..."WE" decided that "WE" don't want those kinds of places in "OUR" community. Does that mean that there was a special election with 100% voting for this massive intrusion into the citizens lives? It seems that, if the actual community - you know, the majority of people who live there - didn't want these kinds of eateries, that there would be no point in opening one there. Those that were already there would go out of business because only passers through would stop in. The problem would solve itself.
I suspect that what the asswipe meant by "WE" was "a bunch of us enlightened intellectually and morally superior beings, seeing the world from our Olympian viewpoint, protecting the cretins who live here from themselves."
From another article on this absurdity:
"John Palazzolo, owner of the Bon Appetite Deli on White Plains Road, said the new rules are good for the town and independent business owners like himself."

Is it too cynical of me to think that this sort of local protectionism is the real motivation behind this?
Well what good is a protection racket if you can't get the government to ban your competitors?
Nope. It's always cronyism. Always. Why else go out of your way to ban a restaurant that at least some of your constituents frequent, and none hate? It's not like Chipotle is a lighting rod like Wal-Mart.
Except for Cartman.
Though a few might remember that Chipotle was once a subsidiary of the evil McDonald's Corporation.
Bootleggers and Baptists
I thinks it's racism since clearly Chipoltle is Mexican food and they can't have that in their little town
"Chipoltle is Mexican food"
That's a stretch
I'm trying to figure out where the state draws this kind of power from.
I know that my version of the social contract says nothing about our masters being allowed to be shit-headed, banning cuntfiddles.
The power of Grayskull, perhaps?
Zounds! You might be right.
I believe we have an black-ops assignment for Master at Arms.
Man-At-Arms
"social contract"
All documents are living documents.
I was just about to post how it's businesses themselves that support this kind of draconian rule. Someone is getting a cutback somewhere.
Of course it is. The local upscale restaurants are behind this. Follow the money trail.
bingo
What's wrong with Chipotle? I mean, as far as fast-food joints go?
It's next to impossible to get the blood stains out of your underwear, for one. I've gone through so, so many pairs of underwear.
I think it's okay, for what it is.
Yeah, but you wear Depends so it isn't an issue for you.
It's not that bad. It's not like Taco Bell, with carne infamia.
We have a place here called the Taco Bus that's pretty good "fast Mexican." I've eaten there a few times, but I just saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Bad Spiky Hair a couple of days ago. Not what you can get in the Southwest or Mexico, no, but not bad for Tampa.
I like this place. Tasty.
That looks edible. I don't recall eating there during my extended stay in Seattle. I ate a lot of salmon.
I doubt you went to Fremont or Greenlake very much.
I doubt it, too. I mostly hung around downtown or left the city entirely.
Where were you staying downtown?
I can't remember exactly, but the first place I stayed before I shifted to a nearby corporate apartment was right next to a Wolfgang Puck's. Both places were downhill towards the water from the Washington Mutual Tower.
The one at University and 2nd Ave near the market? That's not too far from me.
I love Taco Bus, especially the cochinta!
Why don't you use Chipotle-Away?
Last week I had some Thai food, four stars spicy, and it actually burned on the way out. Never had that happen before.
Thai is dangerous if they decide to treat your request for hot as literal, rather than American it down to medium.
I want it hot enough that I need a towel to mop the sweat off the top of my head.
Yeah, this. There's no good Thai, AFAIK, within 50 miles but when I go I ask them to make it so hot they think I can't eat it, then make it hotter.
Made our own pad thai and tom yum last night. The way WE like it (i.e., Thai spicy). Dissolved some of the porcelain off the plate, and likewise the toilet bowl this morning. Chicago sucks for people who like food with some... piquance.
Tonight, probably migas made with some of our roasted extra hot Hatch chiles (we get two bushels every year, roast, peel, and freeze).
Chipotle is bland chain food. Freebirds was a step up, though limited menu choices. None up here though (one more reason I miss Austin). Then there's Taco Time...
Chicago sucks for people who like food with some... piquance.
My wife is from Chicago. I've never met someone with a lower tolerance for spicy food in my life. "Gringo mouth" is too mild a term.
As transplants, we are consistently amazed at how difficult it is to get even mildly hot Mexican, Thai, Szechuan, or even Indian. Make that "impossible." And this is Rick Bayless country. I'm having trouble imagining a Mexican place with that much pretension serving bland food, but I'll make some bets here...
Puerto Ricans have a low tolerance for "hot" (picante) food. Taco Bell mild sauce was considered almost too spicy.
Lots of Puerto Ricans in Chicago. Coincidence? I think not.
My wife would give her a run for her money in the heat tolerance stakes. She even avoids pepper. I've seen her sweating tears at how 'Hot' some food is and I literally cannot even taste it.
Big Star tacos and whiskey.
I was not born with the tolerance but after years growing up/living on the Mexican border I took to it. After that I have backbacked through Szechwan-China and rural Thailand and find the local food spicy but good. I don't even find much Korean food - in Korea - that is more than just a bit spicy.
Been there many times and that has never happened to me. Love the place.
Nothing really. Just sounds like business man Palazzolo had the politican Tony Colavita owe him a favor.
Just sounds like business man Palazzolo had the politican Tony Colavita owe him a favor.
And they say the mod doesn't exist anymore.
Mostly the doughy, sticky "tortillas". The rest is OK for what it is.
I usually get the bowl.
I go about once a year because it's near our optometrist but, yeah, that's the way to go.
We have one close by, and I have four kids and a wife. Need the cheap, and it beats Subway or McDonald's.
Zod yes.
I have a Subway next to Chipotle, near work. Getting burned out...
I can imagine. You need more options. Call your legislator.
Oh, we have a Potbelly now too!
It's actually a lot better than Foggy Bottom, where I used to work, otherwise known as The Dead Zone.
There was a Malaysian place in DC, years ago. Pretty good. DC used to be excellent for international.
It still is, but a lot of it has gone upscale, as well as the prices.
Well, naturally, as the big money is in stealing money from other people. If you're not a member of the stealing class, you probably can't afford it.
It's actually a lot better than Foggy Bottom, where I used to work, otherwise known as The Dead Zone.
You mean queen Michelle hasn't solved your "food desert" problem? Let's Move!
Me too.
Pretty damn good for fast food Mexican, I'd say.
I kinda miss Baja Fresh and their fish tacos. Not near one any longer.
Chipotle sucks, but I will fight to the death for their right to serve faux-Mexican food.
Yes, my defense of the joint shouldn't be taken as an endorsement of it as "good Mexican," which it most assuredly isn't.
Faux-Mexican food is better than real Mexican food, but not nearly as good as Tex-Mex.
I had some higher-end real Mexican food in Cabo in 2003. I had no idea how good it could be until then.
Tex-Mex is just as "real" as any other. The food was already diverging before Mexico even existed.
Anyways, I'm glad that in Houston I can get pretty much any kind of Mexican food I want.
Tex-Mex doesn't usually go in for goat and organs and mole. There probably aren't really any bright lines, but Tex-Mex is generally quite different from the "traditional" Mexican cooking.
A woman I work with recently got married to a Mexican guy in his village. They had a couple goats at the fiesta.
When you say had...
I got the impression that they were food.
I know the difference people refer to but it ignores the fact that food in Mexico is pretty diverse itself and that "American" styles like Tex-Mex and New Mexican were already developing before they left Mexico and continued to be developed by the Mexican-American communities after.
It doesn't ignore it, it just doesn't view it in the way you want.
I had supposedly "real" Mexican food once and it was blandest meal I have ever paid so much money for.
It was consistently good when I had it, but that was at restaurants that cost serious money (paid for by my employer) in Cabo. Not sure that holds true all over Mexico.
Well, mine was near Wall Street, so... I prolly don't know what "real" Mexican actually tastes like.
I can say I have had "real" Chinese food in China and it most certainly better that anything here - so maybe that holds true for Mexican too.
The real Mexican I had was substantially better than "real" Mexican I've had here, even though some of the latter was good enough.
Not Tex-Mex, but really good 'New Mexico Style' in Virginia.

Maybe I will get dinner from there tonight.
That guy is officially worse than Hitler. He may even be worse than Nicole.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, let's not get hyperbolic here. It's one thing to be worse than Hitler. But worse than nicole? I think you're worse than Michael Bay just for saying that.
Just so long as I'm not worse than Deep Dish.
Most people try to kill Hitler when they travel back in time. Episiarch asks him what his favorite pizza style is.
Well, it's good that I did because he gave an answer I didn't expect: Cup O'Pizza. Go figure.
You should've killed him for that answer alone.
I hate to suggest this, but there is, somewhere on this planet, such a thing as Canned Pizza, isn't there? Like the Pillsbury refrigerated biscuits, just pop open, heat, and, well, I'm not sure I want to know what happens next.
Like the Pillsbury refrigerated biscuits, just pop open, heat, and, well, I'm not sure I want to know what happens next.
I'm going to guess that what happens next is "try not to retch while choking it down."
Gosh, really? I don't think I could eat something like that.
Canned Pizza, are you that deprived? My wife can take the packaged Chef-Boy-R-D pizza mix and make a deep dish pizza that is many times better than anything you will buy at a chain pizza joint (Though not as good as some upscale Eyetalian restaraunts.).
Hitler got the idea of genocide when Epi went back in time and talked to him. It's unfortunate that Hitler thought Epi was a Jew and not a Wop.
There's a difference?
Beats me. Not being either a Jew or a Wop you all look the same to me.
Probably all of the time-traveler visits drove Hitler nuts in the first place.
He may even be worse than Nicole.
This shall not stand!
No one asked you, nicole. Jesus, we can't even talk about you behind your back without you messing it up.
Basically if poor people like something, the Man wants to ban it.
You're not really being a good public servant for the poor unless you limit both their job oppotunities and consumer choices. This is the balance needed in the liberal Force.
But what about the organic beans and the free range chicken (except when they run out, and put up the sign about it)?
Mission Burrito Freebirds Chipotle
This is the fast food burrito scale.
Well insert some fucking greater than signs, fucking squirrels.
Fuck this guy.
Same thing in Portland Maine. To preserve the character of the city.
I really like Boloco. Needless to say I am having some identity issues over this.
This guy is really the snob of the month. Like East Chester is too damn good for a Panera Bread or Chipotle. What a douche.
He can have my Panera Bread pannini when he takes it from my cold dead hands.
"BILLY MAYS HERE FOR CHIPOTLAWAY!!!!"
FUCK....YOU.....
tricking me into logging in to make the same joke before scrolling all the way to the bottom
FUCK THAT FUCKING FUCK IN THE ASS WITH A TELEPHONE POLE!
How about with a spicy chipotle burrito.
You'll have to pry my Chipotle away from my COLD... DEAD... HANDS!!!
Hear hear! You'll have to excuse my former college jock speak for a moment, but there is no better post-lifting meal than a double meat burrito bowl from Chipotle.
Throw some guac on that beefy, triumphant bastard and baby, we got a stew going.
I think chipotle peppers are too smoky. Not my favorite.
Notice the answer the Eastchester official gave when asked why he proposed the ban? He didn't say for health concerns, or for small business, the first thing out of his mouth was "We live in an upscale community and we decided we didn't want to have these things"
Look at these elitist, stiff pinky, double windsor wearing, shitheads. There isn't even a hint of do-goodery in this ban. It's purely out of image, boredom, and needing to get his rocks off by controlling the lives of others because his "upscale" community is too white bread to cause any reason for any serious banning. So now he's just going to make shit up.
They're all terrible reasons and equally mockable.
Gun control was never about saving the kiddies, neither is a crusade against Chipotle.
You've probably noticed that Chipotle's share price has gone through the roof over the last few years. One suspects that they have not been kicking in appropriate levels of tribute to the DNC, MoveOn, and other 'causes'. It's not that you can't make money in America, but once you get to a certain size you'd better man up or kick down some cash to your progressive masters. See: Silicon Valley (all of it), the US car 'industry', Hollywood (all of it).
The GOP does it too, but not as ruthlessly because they are incompetent, largely.
Conrad Black had every opportunity to buy his way out of his utterly ridiculous felony fraud conviction. He also could have bought and retired to a non extradition country. Unfortunately for him and his wife, they drastically underestimated the power and guile of their progressive adversaries so he's now in the pokey. His real crime? Thinking he could rely on the DoJ to play fair.
Maybe those folks are just afraid that the place will attract Mexicans, or make the kids start listening to mariachi music, or something.
Screw Chipotle, go Qdoba
You keep saying that, but it never happens! Stop lying!
And fix the Preview button!
Eh, seems like this is much more about what kinds of businesses they want in their community rather than controlling what people eat.
They banned Cosi?!?!?! When I was stuck in DC that was the only place (besides the most excellent bars) that kept me sane! How can they possibly call it unhealthy?
Personally I think banning Chipotle is a good idea (not really). Probably the worst thing about moving from New Mexico to NYC is that Chipotle is what passes for Mexican food. It's ridiculously overpriced and doesn't even compare to real Mexican food. Despite this everyone really loves it which pisses me off when we're going out to eat.
I love Chipotle, but I wouldn't really even call it Tex-Mex. It's just a burrito place to me.
If I want real Mexican food, I go to Mexican restaurants that serve good damned food, which is not always easy here in Huntsville. It does piss me off when everyone and their dog likes Rosie's. Bland and not that authentic. But I'll be damned if I don't see a lot of Mexicans that can't speak much English eating in there.
It's not trying to be Mexican or Tex-Mex. It's based on San Francisco burritos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_burrito
You can argue they're not really legitimate SF style either, but that's the idea anyway.
If you don't like Chipotle, I will fight you.
And I'll back you up.
We'll form an army

Serves Chipotle right! Last November Chipotle took a public stand on California Prop 37 that would have imposed food labeling laws raising prices on food and creating litigation for businesses. Thankfully it lost.
As a fan of Chipotle I had signed up to receive emails from them on promotions, I received one a few weeks before the election from them asking me to vote for Prop 37. I responded that I didnt sign up to get political advice from a burrito place and that the were running the risk of losing my business. They response was basically tough luck we don't need your business.
I don't feel sorry for them they endorse nanny laws in one place they get hit by them somewhere else!
I am torn. On one side of the debate - I don't like laws forbidding honest business, on the other - has anyone else driven across america lately only to notice that the road signs and major landmarks are the only way you know you have even traveled to another city? I mean seriously. Who are these jerks to set up shop everywhere, reducing every city from sea to shining sea into a clone series of the same places? Not just restaurants, everything. Yes, the argument is true - if you build it they will come. But at the expense of littering the (sub)urban landscape and offering bland repetition that destroys any local culture. So, if an "UP SCALE" town decides they do not want that in their city, who are you to say a thing? That town is very picturesque, so I can understand long time residents not wanting it cluttered with cookie cutter crap.
If the people that live support him, then that is the village's choice. This is more than Nanny issue. Need to no more of the details.
