Loving Hayek and Partying with Milk: Q&A with Dorian Electra
"I think economics is cool, I think it's fun," declares musician and video director Dorian Electra. "I think other people should think that too."
Electra has been creating economics-themed music videos since her high school senior thesis spawned the YouTube hit I'm in Love with Friedrich Hayek. Her latest video, Fa$t Ca$h, seeks to explain the boom and busts created by the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing program.
Reason TV's Nick Gillespie caught up with Electra at the 2013 International Students for Liberty Conference to discuss her love of Austrian economists, how she discovered libertarianism, and her most recent music project, Party Milk.

Who is Dorian Electra?
A coed who does libertarian music videos. It's Reason, and they're at a Students for Liberty conference. They can either interview this lady, OR cover a seminar on the Fed. There's a tough choice for this magazine!
(At first, I thought Partying with Milk was a tribute to Harvey)
That girl, while lovely, is like 12. I bet parents were not even out of grade school when Milk was shot.
Why would a libertarian who loves Hayek want to pay to tribute to a Marxist?
Harvey Milk wasn't a marxist....
No, but Sean Penn is.
That's why he's only any good as a villian.
+1
No, but Sean Penn is.
No doubts there...
No doubts there...
Yeah. There is a fine line between chatting up the cute coed or doing a serious interview. Somehow, the dorky white guys didn't get interviewed.
Truly, the only path to Libertarian thought is through those who have been beaten, hard, by the ugly stick. (i.e. Rand, Rothbard, Friedman, etc.)
Can't really blame Nick on this one. She looks like a sane Taylor Swift who wont write a nasty song about you after you flirt with her at the bar one night and you don't call her the next day due to her not giving you her number.
If I had been doing interviews, I would have interviewed her too. She is sexy as hell in her own way.
Yeah, because reason.com never has any dorky white guy interviews. It's all beautiful ladies and the occasion male underwear model.
Shush up, I love her.
Because this is the only video they shot there and they aren't waiting till tomorrow (when more people are actually coming to the site) to post the important one.
Also cosmotarians.
And fried watermelon.
Racist!
It looks delicious.
So the women in that photo. Is anyone generally creeped out by smiles that show a lot of gums between the lip and teeth? It generally gives me the creeps, although two of the most beautiful women I know suffer from minor cases.
It doesn't creep me out as much as solidify in my mind that a certain segment of the population still show recessive traits from their Centaur DNA.
It's just a symptom a generation that smiles too damn much even when they have less reason to do so than prior ones.
They have teeth?
I wish that was my stick they were holding.
They wouldn't be smiling if that were the case.
Frowns of disappointment never make chicks look good.
"They wouldn't be smiling if that were the case."
Your mom sure was smiling when she was handling my stick.
I see what you mean by delicious, but where is the fried watermelon in that picture?
*frowns thinking of recent study showing that performing cunnilingus causes more throat cancer in men than smoking*
At least we know how we're gonna die.
With her boots off?
Who is Dorian Electra?
Well, we know she's not Episiarch's mom.
"I think most of the people that I'm surrounded by at least in Chicago and my spheres at school are leftists, or fall in the Occupy Movement, things like that, and I think there's a lot being felt by people of my generation..."
Too much feeling and not enough thinking.
He felt he had to translate "grok."
I grow old...
This chick works for Stagliano?
That was my first thought and the only reason I watched the disappointing video.
I think I did see this thumbnail on Youporn once.
Hey, Brooks! Fuck yourself. Twice.
A Serious Man is attending that event. Why didn't you interview him, Nick? He's serious, man!
Dorian "Libertarian Lolita" Gomberg a.k.a. Dorian Electra, who was "first introduced to the ideas of liberty in the ninth grade" and still purports to be "intimidated by the awesomeness" of her internship in the preeminent rap video production wing of the Koch Brothers reality denialism empire.

Did Moe start off with a valley girl Godwinization?
So the 'privatized' concentration camp made life even worse for its captives? Doesn't that prove its efficiency?
But seriously, "Auschwitz wasn't that bad, you know" is possibly the worst way to open any kind of argument.
Wow she is unhinged.
Yes, young people, go to China. That'll work out great for you. And I'm guessing that if she has been in Berlin/Germany, she stayed with comfortable hippies. Not any long-term unemployed Germans that are eventually sent to work at brothels by the government.
Yeah. Typical parrot. Has all the talking points but no comprehensive knowledge and no desire to have it. Independent thought is hard.
Do you mean like Bart Simpson working at a brothel or one of those old hags stuck in the red light district for 30 years?
Steve McQueen worked in a brothel as a teenager, and then grew up to be... well, Steve McQueen. Yes he was indeed just that awesome.
So Tucksilly's first name is Jerry?
I didn't know Lucy had a blog. Guess I won't be coming here anymore. No more ad revenue for you, Reason!
I wonder if she hates corporate welfare as much when it's Solyndra.
Goddammit, I wound up reading the gawker article, and the comments. Now I've had all the rage I can handle for the week. Thanks, buddy. Oh well, at least it's an excuse to drink. Just picked up a bottle of Glenmorangie 15 that should do nicely.
Lolita?! She's 20.
Duh, 26 is the age of adulthood these days.
more like 32
The PWN of PWNs:
Good for you, Dan. Good for you.
I remember reading that article by the odious Moe Tkacik. It was basically one step away from, "Her name is GOMBERG! She's a JEW! They love money, right? JOOOOZZZZ!!!!"
Tkacik is a truly despicable human being.
I've seen Tkacik interviewed. Her positions are just internalized dogma that's memorized and is being faithfully recited. Her canine obedience to stale and stinking orthodoxy reflects the full range of her capacities
Dorian is a study in contrast: obvious intelligence, earned confidence, and genuine openness to new ideas that could hardly be more distant from the bitter and worthless Tkacik.
Yeah, "Electra" is young. And female. Why the FUCK do people seem to be holding that against her? On the left, they're ready to *worship* youths like Ezra Klein; in the liberty movement we're dismissive.
Maybe this is part of the reason we continue to get our ass handed to us?
Yeah, I picked up on the name-dropping, too. It's like when they say Michelle Magalang. I may not agree with a single word Michelle Malkin ever says, but it would never occur to me to call her Magalang.
reason has really gone downhill since LucyStag was a Jr. Editor
I'm going to play it safe and go ahead and drink to that one.
Australian academics: Democracy should be replaced by 'elite warrior leadership' in order to fight global warming
...Chapters 6 and 7 demonstrate that the inherent failures of democracy that have lead to the environmental crisis also operate in many other spheres of society. They are inherent to the operation of democracy. Furthermore, we come to share Plato's conclusion that democracy is inherently contradictory and leads naturally to authoritarianism.
In chapters 8 and 9 we argue that authoritarianism is the natural state of humanity, and it may be better to choose our elites rather than have them imposed. Indeed Plato, on seeing the sequelae of democracy's birth, observed that it is better that the just and wise should rule unwillingly, rather than those who actually want power should have it. We analyze authoritarian structures and their operation ranging from the medical intensive care unit and the Roman Catholic Church to corporatism with the conclusion that the crisis is best countered by developing authoritarian government using some of the fabric of these existing structures. The education and values of the new "elite warrior leadership" who will battle for the future of the earth is described....
Do they advocate a fascist state where children are taken from their parents at birth and raised in a communal setting, like Plato also?
"...children are taken from their parents at birth and raised in a communal setting..."
I am wondering how all of those 'orphans' from Ceausescu's Romania are doing these days.
When did Australia start requiring academics to have their brains removed?
....Australia has already done that...they had a forced adoption program for unsuitable white mothers, where they would, basically kidnap the children, and put them into a home of the state's choosing. And they had the forced integration programs for aboriginal children, where the state would, yeah kinda the same thing but closer to what you said, kidnap them and raise them in essentially camps, in order to.. turn them white. They mostly ended up doing forced labour for the warren, sex workers.. etc.
"the new "elite warrior leadership" who will battle for the future of the earth"
Yes, I watched Captain Planet, too.
Australian academics: Democracy should be replaced by 'elite warrior leadership' in order to fight global warming
"What? Why yes, led by us, of course."
So is he writing Sci-Fi? Or is this shit he actually believes?
I don't want to live in a world where that isn't cleverly-written satire.
She's cute. Best of luck to her with that whole intertubes thing.

OT: Banjos and I are going to make a serious effort to get a mayo business off the ground. We're in the process of recipe development and are looking to find a lab that can independently establish "best by" dates and such once we get that figured out.
The real bitch has been preservation. Once you get the pH to the right level, you've altered the composition so much by using vinegar and/or citric acid that a near-overseasoning is required (IMO) to get beyond that of mere mayo, unless we want a shelf-life of 7-10 days.
Meh, I suppose we'll figure it out, and when we do we're going to want some orders to flow in from you bastards. We've decided to call ourselves "Monocle Foods, Inc." just so you all know and we are going to try and get a website up as soon as development is completed and we have a few basic recipes ready to produce and ply at the Farmers Markets in the central valley and possibly LA.
Wish us luck.
Have fun dealing with the health inspectors.
(standard artisanal disclaimer that there shouldn't be state-mandated and run health inspectors)
We've already gotten a work-around on that front. We are going to rent a restaurant's kitchen for a number of hours early in the am when they're not in operation. Their health inspections will cover ours and we'll be able to get by pretty cheaply since any revenue while you're closed is good revenue for a restaurant.
I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you.
I laughed.
Monocle Foods? I love it.
Count me in, I will buy a case.
How is baby Reason doing?
Very well, thanks for asking. we're taking her to Stanford Med Center on March 4th to meet their surgical team. We're pretty sure they're going to say the people at Valley Children's are wrong and will opt for surgery right away. We're still cautious, but our optimism is growing all the time that she'll be completely normal (except for maybe not having a bellybutton) by the time she's a year old.
when we do we're going to want some orders to flow in from you bastards
So first, you spend months telling us anyone who buys artisanal mayo is retarded, then you tell us we're going to buy it?
Ha! And I'm still waiting for pics!
I just reamed Banjos. You'll have your pics within an hour.
Was that literal?
If so, forward some pics to me, brah.
Oops. Well actually it was, but that was a few hours ago and I didn't have the webcam set up.
I thought you always had the webcam up for the extra income.
If it's not artisanal mayo, made at the peak of irony, I'm not interested.
I don't know what could possibly be more ironic.
I'd like to think my urging you to not give into the hipster hate and instead, into fleecing morons with money, helped with this venture.
If so, do I get my own flavor?
Congrats. I hope Monocle Foods becomes the first spoke in some sort of Reason-ARI-Koch Industrial complex or some such. Monocle Industries will be a libertarian Umbrella Corporation. Inevitably there will be a science division. Are you interested in employing a burnt-out kind of lazy mediocre researcher as one of your Top Men in charge of Monocle Science? PLEASE SAY YES. I WANT A BETTER JOB.
Yeah, as soon as we start our drone division, you're in.
/sarc!
Is mayonnaise on the First Lady's list of permissible condiments?
Um, doubtful. But not because of health concerns, but because black people hate mayonnaise.
The Denver Post and its website suck. No linky for them.
Magpul (company motto: "When 29 Bullets Just Aren't Enough") has threatened to leave Colorado if state lawmakers ban magazines that can hold more than 15 rounds.
"We will leave if it passes," barked Doug Smith, Magpul's chief operating officer.
-------
Magpul says it employs more than 200 people at its Erie plant, and claims it will spend about $85 million this year in Colorado. By way of comparison, Denver entrepreneur Philip Anschutz spent $86 million last Tuesday on a haircut and a new tie. And at lunch on Thursday, Todd Helton spent $87 million on merlot.
My point here ? other than strongly advising fans sitting near first base at Coors Field to get the heck out of the way when Todd Helton spots the beer vendor ? is that Coloradans ... Coloradoites ... Colorudians ... uh, we don't take kindly to being threatened. And in the wake of Columbine and Aurora, we really don't like being threatened by a guy who makes tools designed for the sole purpose of killing lots of people in the shortest possible time.
So go ahead, Doug. Move. Wyoming sounds nice.
It's a poorly written "inside Denver" mishmash of nonsensical liberal noseholding. Whoever this guy is, he's better than you, whoever you are.
Yeah, saying that he'll take his money and jobs and leave totally constitutes a "threat."
What a dick.
I bet the 200 employees are happy this writer has the courage to stand up for their safety. After all, their kids will be much safer now that 30 round magazines are off the street they will be forced to sleep in their car on.
Coloradans ... don't take kindly to being threatened. ... So go ahead, Doug. Move.
Yep, this guy speaks for all Coloradans (he apparently doesn't know the proper term for his own fellow residents). Including the 200 workers at the puny $85 million plant (LOL, basically nothing!).
More obnoxious progressive navel-gazing. He's qualified to say "we" and talk for all (reality-based!) Coloradans. He/We don't need to hear from the working-class folk that would actually be affected by the 'threat.'
Fortunately, in this raucous gun debate we have the clear thinking of Vice President Joe Biden to guide us.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That must be meta-level trolling right there.
Clearly there's something wrong with Colorado since, as this writer points out, they seem to have a disproportionate number of mass shootings. Maybe we should ban Coloradans from owning magazines over 15 rounds, since they clearly can't handle it.
saying that he'll take his money and jobs and leave totally constitutes a "threat."
He's going to rob the Colorado State Treasury!
He's a terrorist madman!
And in the wake of Columbine and Aurora, we really don't like being threatened by a guy who makes tools designed for the sole purpose of killing lots of people in the shortest possible time.
There was a lot of lip licking involved in writing that sentence.
Well, probably most things he does involves lip licking.
