National School Choice Week 2013 Kicks Off in Los Angeles

Hundreds of students and their parents helped kick off National School Choice Week 2013, January 26, at Union Station in Los Angeles, Calif. The week long celebration includes a 14 stop, cross-country tour starting at Union Station and ending in New York City's Penn Station.

"This is an opportunity for families who really want to change things in this country to actually make a difference and they are," said National School Choice Week founder Andrew Campanella, who hosted the event.

Reason TV was on hand to capture the event which included speeches from parents, Ben Austin of Parent Revolution and former state senator Gloria Romero, who is now state director of Democrats for Education Reform.

This isn't some backdoor, end run around scheme to get us all on high speed trains, is it? Because they're dangerous. People are just going to get pushed in front of them. They need to be banned. Just like school choice.

My wife works at a charter school. She has the freedom to do what she needs to teach and she uses a prize box and tickets to teach economic lessons. She has a day where she had her 3rd grade class make products to sell for the same tickets that they use to buy items out of her prize box. Kids made origami fortune tellers, drew pictures, and the most successful group simply sold legos. They made posters advertising their product, price tags, and a few had to make sold out signs. The kids had a lot of fun with it and the ticket system which awards a ticket currency to kids for good things like high grades on a test, perfect behavior, and turning in their signed calendars for parental involvement also uses fines to discourage negative behaviors has really worked well for her. The school is almost 100% at or below the poverty level and predominately minority, and yet they still outperform several similar districts. Charters work, I'm convinced.

I have an extreme leftist friend who aspires to be a public school teacher. In a gun free school, of course. He hates charter schools, or any kind of free will. Except regarding abortion.
