Joe Kennedy: Not a Bootlegger or a Nazi, But a Hardcore Non-Interventionist
Q&A with David Nasaw, author of "The Patriarch"
"He's Zelig, he's everywhere - from World War I to World War II to the Cold War to the New Frontier," says David Nasaw, author of the The Patriarch: The Remarkable Life and Turbulent Times of Joseph P. Kennedy. "If you look at the world the way [Kennedy] looks at it, your understanding of 20th Century American history is enormously expanded."
Nasaw, a professor of history at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, spoke with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie about his best-selling biography of the father of JFK, RFK, and Teddy Kennedy. Nasaw argues that Kennedy, who served as the American ambassador to Great Britain during World War II, was never pro-Nazi but was consistently against military intervention even during the Cold War. And to the disappointment of Kennedy haters everywhere, Nasaw debunks the myth that Joe made a fortune via bootlegging during Prohibition. In fact, those stories about Kennedy Sr., who passed multiple security checks by the FBI while serving multiple presidents, only surfaced in the late '60s when JFK assassination buffs tried to tie the family to the mob.

Kennedy, where have I heard that name before?
So, the Kennedy family was headed by a pro-free marketeer who tried to undermine the war against the Nazis? Camelot in Crisis?
He certainly believed in low taxes. That is why he moved his oil companies and much of his wealth to Fiji.
Did Arthur Schlesinger die or something? I thought the position of lap dog to the Kennedy clan was filled.
Don't know about the professor's debunking skills, but my father worked for old Joe hauling crates off cutters on the coast of NH...while he may not have made a fortune, he porbably made a pretty good buck...
You can lose money at bootlegging and still be a bootlegger.
Does it matter how much money he made at it?
And why is it important to the professor to be sure Kennedy is not called a bootlegger?
I think the whole presentation of this video tells us more about Nasaw then it does about Joe Kennedy.
Apparently Nasaw thinks croney capitalism is great so long as you do not break the law...even when that law is immoral and destructive.
because at the core, this clan doesn't do anything that wont make a buck...even Joe for Oil, takes home mid 6 figures from his "non-profit"...it's a defining principle.
Reminds me of Buffet....supports government intervention so long as it hurts any new competitors and so long as he gets his cut.
Here's all the dirt on Joe:

I seem to recall references to sources quite a bit earlier than the 'late '60s' that ties Joe to bootlegging, but it'll take some digging to find them.
The 'pro Nazi' claims always seemed pretty thin, but he and King sure competed for the anglo-phobe gold, and that's not necessarily a criticism.
Regardless, unless his JFK vote-buying isn't covered, that book's gonna stay pretty low on my reading list.
I remember listening to the Chicago election returns on the radio in 1960. The "lost" ballot boxes. The search for the "lost" boxes. The finding of the boxes.
Dude has no idea whats going on man!

Kennedy was a great businessman, but a terrible, terrible diplomat.
My great-great uncle would've been quite surprised to learn that JK1 wasn't a bootlegger.
He's Zelig, he's everywhere, who is him?
I like this book, it is really an amazing book.
Good to see non-interventionism on the rise again. The last time it was tried by Americans the results were extraordinary. I expect similar this time.
And for some context. Mein Kampf is STILL a best seller in the Middle East.
