    Sharyl Attkisson gives a great despription of how the media operates and how the term "fake news' came into being.

    But she noticed that in 2016, there seemed to be a concerted effort by the MSM to focus America's attention on the idea of "fake news" in conservative media. That looked like a propaganda effort to Attkisson, so she did a little digging and traced the new spin to a little non-profit called "First Draft," which, she said, "appears to be the about the first to use 'fake news' in its modern context."

    "On September 13, 2016, First Draft announced a partnership to tackle malicious hoaxes and fake news reports," Attkisson explained. "The goal was supposedly to separate wheat from chaff, to prevent unproven conspiracy talk from figuring prominently in internet searches. To relegate today's version of the alien baby story to a special internet oblivion."

  • John||

    She noted that a month later, then-President Obama chimed in.
    He insisted in a speech that he too thought somebody needed to step in and curate information of this wild, wild West media environment," she said, pointing out that "nobody in the public had been clamoring for any such thing."

    Yet suddenly the subject of fake news was dominating headlines all over America as if the media had received "its marching orders," she recounted. "Fake news, they insisted, was an imminent threat to American democracy."

    Attkisson, who has studied the manipulative moneyed interests behind the media industry, said that "few themes arise in our environment organically." She noted that she always found it helpful to "follow the money."

    "What if the whole anti-fake news campaign was an effort on somebody's part to keep us from seeing or believing certain websites and stories by controversializing them or labeling them as fake news?" Attkisson posited.

  • Rich||

    I recommend her book Stonewalled.

  • LynchPin1477||

    Attkisson, who has studied the manipulative moneyed interests behind the media industry, said that "few themes arise in our environment organically."

    When I was a kid I sort of half-believed that there was a secret base somewhere in the desert where people came up with jokes and then distributed them to specially selected kids at schools across the country. I mean, how else could a "meme" (I didn't call it that at the time) spread if not through central planning?

    Then I grew up, learned about emergent phenomena, read Hayek, and came to not only learn about, but love the beauty of decentralized order.

    Of course there *could* be these manipulative moneyed interests operating behind the scenes, and maybe in this specific case there was (but I'm skeptical), but the assertion that "few themes arise in our environment organically" is just ludicrous.

  • John||

    I think it is more that the media is very adept and willing to repeat talking points. So you just get the right people to all say the same talking points and the rest fall in line. That is what the Journolist was. And you can see it all the time. There will be some talking point and about a dozen different journalists will repeat it in unison.

  • Griffin3||

    Glad you asked!

    The post cites several news articles from the 1890s, including an 1891 piece in The Buffalo Commercial (Buffalo, NY) that optimistically declared, "The public taste [...] certainly has no genuine appetite for 'fake news' and 'special fiend' decoctions such as were served up by a local syndicate a year or two ago."

    Although, that article comes from HuffPo, so make itself be fake news.

  • Griffin3||

    Also see:

    It was mid-2016, and Buzzfeed's media editor, Craig Silverman, noticed a funny stream of completely made-up stories that seemed to originate from one small Eastern European town. Dear Media

    When your "source" is 'the ADL searching 4chan'...

    Because as soon as you all start repeating the shit like its news? that's when 4chan reminds you ITS FUCKING 4CHAN YOU IDIOTS

    They are so used to simply taking each other's word for shit that no one bothered to ask, "Is there really no source of information on this that doesn't originate DIRECTLY FROM 4CHAN?"

    And is the fact that the ADL was the 'journalist' originating the story not something to give you pause?

    Fuck you, media. You're whores and you think that some post-facto, 'sadly, with big stories there is a rush to fill demand for information'-handwaving is supposed to protect your credibility.

    my personal favorite line today comes from The Week:

    "The ADL first discovered Cruz's connection to the ROF on 4chan, a controversial online message board frequented by trolls and white supremacists. "

    Of course, the writer of this article and its readers are a standard-deviation too fucking stupid to contemplate that maybe, just maybe.... some of those trolls, troll AS white supremacists.

    its like they don't even understand their own statements.

  • GILMORE™||

    The issue here isn't the vileness of real or faked white-supremacists. They can be equally vile and it has nothing to do with the problem.

    The problem is the idiots reprinting a story which THEY KNOW is sourced by nothing except

    1) a partisan organization whose entire reason-for-being relies on "hate crimes"
    2) who knowingly went into a hive of lies and pulled out some very sketchy unverified information
    3) which no other organization can independently confirm (or is even trying)

    perhaps #4 is, "and which authorities specifically say they can't confirm at all"

    yes stormy, 4channers are *bad people*.

    but that has nothing to do with the retarded culpability of the media.

    Or, at least, they and their peers wonder why they won't be taken seriously when juxtaposed against Trump.

  • LynchPin1477||

    On the one hand, I wanna say, "Wow, epic troll!"

    Local law enforcement: No ties between militia and school shooter

    Local law enforcement sources have so far not found a connection between accused Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz and a Tallahassee-based paramilitary group.

    Leon County law enforcement sources told the Tallahassee Democrat that they could not find information linking Cruz, 19, to the Republic of Florida Militia, as first reported by the group's self-proclaimed leader Jordan Jereb.
