Getting the story strait. Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said that a two-week ceasefire in the war in Iran was predicated on Iran fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy markets.

So is Iran complying? Is the Strait of Hormuz actually open for transit? Here is what's being reported.

Hundreds of tanker ships are apparently waiting to cross through the strait, but the ships are unsure if they will be able to do so without being attacked, according to The New York Times. The Times also reports that only five vessels passed through the strait on Wednesday, which is down from the 10-vessel average over the previous five days.

Separately, The Wall Street Journal reports that Iran, which mined the strait during the war, has told conflict negotiators that it intends to "limit the number of ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz to around a dozen a day and charge tolls." But White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is denying reports that the strait is closed, and said that the U.S. will honor the ceasefire so long as it's open with no limitations.

The exact state of affairs surrounding the strait, and whether it's truly open or not, and if so under what conditions, remains uncertain as of this writing. They're going to have to rename it the Strait of Schrödinger.

Meanwhile, Trump is on TruthSocial posting about NATO, and the official White House X account is reposting his words:

"NATO WASN'T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON'T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN. REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!!" - President Donald J. Trump pic.twitter.com/xgEV8P1n4n

Voice and exit taxes. Blue states are pushing wealth taxes—and exit taxes. The progressive left faction of the Democratic Party has been talking about wealth taxes in various forms for a decade or so. The problem with those taxes is that most evidence suggests they don't work very well, at least not if the goal is actually to raise revenue. Just look at what has happened in Europe: Most countries that have implemented wealth taxes of some sort have repealed them. They can be hard to implement, since they tax difficult-to-value items like art and property. And even more importantly, they tend to result in capital flight. Wealthy people, who by definition have means and options, simply leave.

Some blue states seem to think they can mitigate this effect through tax targeting. California's proposed wealth tax would be enacted retroactively, if it goes into effect. Elsewhere, Democrats have raised the idea of exit taxes in an attempt to prevent capital flight. A KOMOnews report says that "across the country, at least ten states are now exploring or have already passed an exit or wealth tax in order to combat revenue losses from residents fleeing to lower tax areas."

No state has passed an exit tax, yet. But California did at one point consider a kind of tax that would have affected former residents for up to 10 years after leaving the state, though it did not become law.

Some Democrats are taking this idea national. Last month, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.), among the most prominent and persistent advocates of wealth taxes, highlighted her proposed 2 percent tax on all households worth more than $50 million, plus an additional 1 percent tax on billionaires. Her plan also proposes a 40 (!) percent exit tax on anyone worth more than $50 million who renounces their U.S. citizenship.

Exit taxes haven't been meaningfully tested in court, but I have serious doubts about their legality, especially at the state level.

It almost certainly isn't. Article IV, s 2 of the constitution guarantees the citizens of each state the right to enjoy the privileges and immunities of citizens of other states when in those other states. That has long been thought to imply the right to travel to the other… https://t.co/kLsuevtBr8

Scenes from Washington, D.C. There's an old abandoned Six Flags property in Prince George's County, just outside the District, that closed last year. Now basketball star Kevin Durant and a group of investors plan to buy the 500-acre property and turn it into entertainment and housing.

  • The White House ballroom renovation will use foreign steel.
  • Tax credits (subsidies), government-sponsored leave, and more subsidies: Hillary Clinton outlines a predictably expensive and poorly designed agenda that she claims will address affordability for families. Isn't layers of programs and subsidies and regulations how we got here in the first place?
  • New Yorkers are arguing about where dogs do and don't belong in the city. I've never had a dog in New York City, but one of the many things I enjoy about my neighborhood in D.C. is just how many dogs there are. There's a local dog park that's maintained with private donations and even a local brewery that's dog-friendly so you can have a pint with your pup. Urban dogs are great!
  • Avatar: Fire and Ash made $1.4 billion at the global box office. But its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water, made more than $2 billion. So director James Cameron and his producers are looking to reduce production costs for the two planned sequels. They also want to make these films, which have run about three hours each, shorter.

Hundreds of tanker ships are apparently waiting to cross through the strait, but the ships are unsure if they will be able to do so without being attacked...

President Jefferson needs to build a fleet of ships to deal with these Barbary pirates.

    1. JFree   2 months ago

That fleet of ships is already there - though are close to being out of munitions. They will be obliterated if they try to run the gauntlet - and everyone knows how it will happen. Which is why they aren't trying to do that.

There is no military solution - short of a land component that is half a million land troops - to 'opening the strait' without Iranian influence/control. You up for it?

      1. Vernon Depner   2 months ago

We need a laughing face emoji.

        1. JFree   2 months ago

If the navy and air force could open the strait to 'anti-Iran side' traffic, then they would have done so already. That they haven't done so tells you there is a reason why and it doesn't have anything to do with some 'strategy' behind going for a 'two-week ceasefire' that Israel has already broken (meaning the Strait will remain closed). Perhaps you're right - they should have chosen a better laughing face emoji.

Democrats seek to reestablish legal serfdom (being tied to the land) for their tax milch cows as those people seek political asylum in less greedy states.

    1. Idaho-Bob   2 months ago

I am genuinely curious how exit taxes are legal. Or the ten-year proposal California talked about. How can a state demand taxes after a resident has left? How can California collect a tax from a Texas resident?

    2. JFree   2 months ago

Is California instituting actual land taxes? I thought they destroyed that tax base with Prop 13 a lifetime ago.

      1. Mickey Rat   2 months ago

Not land taxes. They are trying to tie residents to the state that requires a buyout to gain their freedom to relocate their residency.

        1. JFree   2 months ago

OK. So they are trying to tie residents to the state via income tax. That can only 'work' with the group (broadly - upper middle class that relies on income that can/must be declared in CA) that can't escape that tax base. I assume that means stock option income from a CA corporation - or CA based rental income - or something similar.

As usual - it won't hit the truly wealthy who have tax lawyers to avoid that stuff.

          1. Mickey Rat   2 months ago

There is the principle of the idea, that a state claiming ownership of its residents and their productive output and wealth is unacceptable.

The White House ballroom renovation will use foreign steel.

    Hoisted on his own tariff!

    1. mad.casual   2 months ago

Should've gone the traditional American route and used domestic steel made by workers paid below living wages who will be taxed if they get too wealthy and leave.

    2. Purple Martin   2 months ago

You'll be unsurprised to earn that that the $37mil of steel in question is to be donated by Belgium's ArcelorMittal (second largest steel producer in the world). Their largest producer country is India but all the donated steel will produced in Europe.

And only the best steel of course, not like that crappy American steel! Actual quote: "Great steel as opposed to garbage steel, because they dump a lot of garbage around. You know, steel is like everything else, including human beings. Steel could be high quality, and it can be low quality."

After that donation, ArcelorMittal was…ummm, unexpectedly…included in Trump's recently announced tariff redistribution, originally primarily intended to reduce tariffs on Canadian steel imports used in manufacture of products in the United states. That wasn't in the headlines, but deep in the fine print:

      • Drawback is available to a product on Annex I-B or III that's not subject to an antidumping or countervailing duty order, from a trade agreement partner country (United Kingdom, European Union, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Canada and others with a final Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART)), and the steel is completely melted and poured in the trade agreement partner country.

This is one instance where progressive twats have pushed too far even for here. You think the people who have substituted having dogs for having kids will give up their "fur babies" just to virtue signal for some outspoken Muslim retards? No, that would require giving something up, and that's a price too high for virtue signaling cunts. A virtue signal should cost nothing otherwise it ceases to merely be a signal.

I'll take the small wins while I can, at least until I finally move now that we really have so many transplant imbeciles running around this place that they've become simply unavoidable.

But I do enjoy the thought that my hyper-blue Colorado mountain town, with sickly-sweet fawning over dogs and universal dog access (always fun to see some dogs sparring at Home Depot), would twist themselves into knots if their equally-irrational immigrant love led to a tough decision: keep putting their dogs above people or embrace Sharia law, and kill all the dogs.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/jd-vance-s-task-force-uncovers-6-billion-in-potential-fraud-begins-taking-action-report/ar-AA20sglo

The task force has identified $6.3 billion in government contracts linked to potentially fraudulent businesses, The Daily Caller reported Wednesday.

The task force, alongside the General Services Administration (GSA), are beginning to send out letters to nearly 400 businesses with government contracts that they believe could be fraudulent," according to the report. The investigation found 895 contracts awarded to 392 businesses, totaling $6.3 billion, "with $3 billion still left to be rewarded."

The Department of Justice estimated that several billion dollars have been stolen by phony organizations in Minnesota alone. The DOJ cited examples of waste and mismanagement of social services programs meant to provide food and health care for the needy.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/nyc-lawyer-ran-massive-insurance-fraud-ring-staging-car-accidents-to-drive-up-payouts-suit/ar-AA20stHe

A Brooklyn-based personal injury attorney allegedly ran a massive scheme that used staged car accidents to drive up insurance payouts, according to a new, bombshell lawsuit — that comes as Gov. Kathy Hochul ramps up her campaign to crack down on such scams.

FedEx filed the 92-page suit Tuesday accusing the Ikhilov Law Group and its owner, attorney Zorik “Erik” Ikhilov, of running a sophisticated ring also involving doctors and medical providers that aimed to bilk the delivery giant through bogus liability claims.

“The staged accidents, coordinated medical referrals, and rapid escalation to injections or surgeries all serve a single purpose which is manufacturing the statutory prerequisites necessary to commence a personal injury action,” states the Manhattan federal court filing.

Your speech is violence...this may ultimately end up in SCOTUS

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/police-officer-escalates-legal-battle-after-suspension-for-criticizing-george-floyd/ar-AA20sSWT

The full bench on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit heard arguments in a case brought by Cambridge police officer Brian Hussey challenging his suspension for a February 2021 Facebook post he made criticizing Floyd, a black man who was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis in 2020. The post, which was quickly deleted by Hussey, included a link to a news article about House Democrats introducing a police reform bill named after Floyd, and in it Hussey questioned the decision to name the bill after Floyd, calling him a "druggie," "thief," and "career criminal."

Hussey was suspended for four days without pay after the police department placed him on administrative leave for weeks pending an investigation into his social media post. He filed a lawsuit challenging his suspension, claiming it violated his First Amendment free speech rights. A federal district court judge and a three-judge panel of the First Circuit both sided with the police department in Hussey's First Amendment claims, prompting him to appeal to the full First Circuit.

The full appeals court heard arguments Wednesday afternoon in a Boston courtroom, with Hussey's lawyer, Jack Bartholet, claiming the police officer "posted a mainstream, but locally unpopular political view" and argued that being disciplined for such a post "is not and cannot be consistent with the First Amendment."

The judges on the First Circuit sharply questioned Bartholet's claims that Hussey's post was not capable of causing a "disruption" and therefore was not speech that the department could lawfully discipline. One of the judges questioned how disruptive a post would need to be for punishment to be lawful and not infringe upon free speech rights.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest Wednesday of a former employee of the United States Special Operations Command, known as SOCOM, for leaking classified material to a journalist.

Patel posted on social media, "FBI and our partners have arrested a former SOCOM employee, who supported our top-level military warfighters, for allegedly transmitting classified information to a member of the media."

The Find Out stage not going so well...

    https://pjnewsletter.com/blue-city-cops-social-workers/?utm_source=tpi&utm_medium=email

It’s a progressive delusion, sold under the banner of “reimagining public safety,” that suggests the ancient problems of violence and madness can be solved with therapy and a gentle voice. This social experiment argues that the thin blue line—a barrier, by the way, that was forged in reality and sacrifice—can be safely swapped out for a team of social workers with clipboards and utopian ideals.

The result of this philosophy was just put on horrifying display in Boston.

    From the Daily Caller:

“As they asked the individual to begin the process of maybe coming up and keeping the attention they needed, the individual immediately opened the door and struck both the clinician and an officer who was outside the door…He was armed with some type of sword, striking, or I should say, stabbing, the officer in the arm, knocking at least the EMS clinician to the ground.”

Don’t think for a second this was some random tragedy. It was the feature, not the bug, of a deliberate political agenda. This disaster unfolded in a city run by Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu, who, as a city councilor back in 2020, eagerly pushed an ordinance to divert 911 calls away from police and into the hands of social workers.

but the second half absolutely is not. actual capitalists wouldn't have the excessive welfare state we have here. without a welfare state to suck off of, people coming here would just have to work and be productive, right? and it would be better to have them come. Real capitalists have no walls, just an excess of prosperity.

      Based on reporting.

Iranian naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, specifically the Maham-3 and Maham-7 models, are equipped with electronic timers and coded sensor inputs that allow operators to remotely control when the weapons become active or inactive.

That's not uncertain, either. Finally we know the Iranians once again restricted traffic. Perhaps completely, but I don't know that.

Anyhow this is the context that the author fails to mention. For Iran, at least for the moment, it seems that they are willing to strangle the world's economy as long as Israel doesn't back off Lebanon.

“In light of Lebanon’s repeated appeals to open direct negotiations with Israel, I instructed the cabinet yesterday to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible...there is no ceasefire in Lebanon,” noting that Israel was “continuing to strike Hezbollah with great force,”
      --Netanyahu

“I spoke with Bibi and he’s going to low-key it. I just think we have to be sort of a little more low-key,”
      --Trump
