Healthy jobs report: The federal government's jobs report released this morning shows unexpectedly healthy employment growth in January.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

According to the report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the economy added 130,000 jobs over the past month. That was enough to keep the unemployment rate steady at 4.3 percent. The reported employment growth is far in excess of economists' anemic estimates that the economy added just 55,000 to 69,000 jobs last month.

The unemployment rate is still up from a year ago, when it sat at an even 4 percent, according to the BLS report. But an expected disastrous month of hiring did not materialize.

In even better news, the one sector of the economy undergoing an employment recession is the federal government. The BLS report states that federal payrolls shed another 34,000 jobs in January. The civilian federal workforce is down 10.9 percent from its peak in October 2024.

This is more evidence that the Trump administration's efforts to whittle down the federal bureaucracy are succeeding on at least one metric.

As I've covered before, the drive of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to radically shrink the federal government's spending was a huge flop. The savings promised by Elon Musk et al. did not materialize. We're on track to spend more money than ever.

But, when it comes to cutting federal jobs, DOGE has succeeded in its state-slashing mission. The 327,000 people who no longer work for the feds are now free to engage in productive activity in the private sector. That's a win for economy-wide efficiency.

Moving the goalposts: In the run-up to the report's release, Trump administration officials made the rounds in the media to spin a bad jobs report as a good thing.

Hear President Donald Trump's trade adviser, Peter Navarro, argue yesterday on Fox Business that low job growth would be the result of the administration's mass deportation of illegal immigrants. Under Biden, the economy needed to add 200,000 jobs a month just to employ all the illegal immigrants entering the country, said Navarro. No longer.

Peter Navarro: "The jobs report comes out tomorrow. We have to revise our expectations down significantly for what a monthly job number should look like … Wall Street has to adjust for the fact that we're deporting millions of illegals out of the job market." pic.twitter.com/eat5SG59Px

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) February 10, 2026

On Monday, Kevin Hassett, the director of the National Economic Council, possibly paraphrasing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, said "one shouldn't panic" at lower job growth, which he too chalked up to the administration's deportation drive and advances in AI.

This exercise in expectations management seems unnecessary now, given how good January's numbers are looking. Lest this spin be forgotten, it's worth pointing out how much immigration restrictionists are trying to move the goalposts on employment.

The argument from immigration hawks has long been that deporting foreign-born workers and preventing more of them from moving to the U.S. is a good thing for overall job growth.

The fewer foreigners working peacefully and productively means there are more employment opportunities for native-born Americans, the thinking goes. The Trump administration made this exact case last month in an article published on the White House website, which said, "mass deportations=more jobs."

In fact, mass deportations, by definition means fewer jobs and a less productive economy. One can imagine how much better the jobs report would look if America were embracing immigration right now, instead of trying to kick out as many people as possible.

    Democrats were on fire yesterday at the hearing.

    Greg Price
    @greg_price11
    Swalwell: "Will you resign from ICE?"

    Lyons: "No"

    Swalwell: "Why not?"

    Lyons: "Because that child that you're showing right there, the men and women of ICE took care of him when his father abandoned him and ran from law enforcement."

    Julio Rosas
    @Julio_Rosas11
    Rep. Shri Thanedar asks CBP Commissioner Scott if he will get a pardon from President Trump:

    Scott: "I signed up for this job to protect America and I'm very proud of the service that I provide and I don't need a pardon from anybody."

    Thanedar: "You better hope so! You better hope you get been pardoned because you will be held accountable...That's why I introduced a bill in the United States Congress to abolish ICE."

    Nick Sortor
    @nicksortor
    WTF?! Rep. Delia Ramirez, whose parents are ILLEGALS from Guatemala, is now comparing ICE agents to the KKK

    Democrats are BEGGING people to start kiIIing agents in the streets with this kind of rhetoric.

    “I have as much respect for you as I do for the last white men who put on masks to terrorize communities of color. I have no respect for the inheritors of the Klanhood and the slave patrol.”

    Bill Melugin
    @BillMelugin_
    WOW.

    Just now, Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) who is facing federal charges for assaulting an ICE agent, asks ICE Director Todd Lyons "how do you think Judgement Day will go for you with so much blood on your hands" then asks "do you think you're going to hell Mr. Lyons?".

        The media calls him "woman in a brown dress" then stops talking about him then shifts to "gunperson" because we need to respect his pronouns, in death.

        This is the state of things. Now Canadians will blame his actions on all the awful anti-trans-ness in the world. Not the fact that he was a drug addicted psycho unleashed and made worse by the trans/medical/industrial complex.

      No they aren't. It is you and Cato who keep finding ways to lie about all profit, no downside.

      Restrictionists have consistently discussed costs on both ends, illegal welfare and pushing citizens to welfare.

    The Democratic Socialists of America’s LA chapter wants to straight-up seize private property through a “creative use of eminent domain,” take control of your neighborhood grocery store, and replace cops with unarmed social workers while shutting down jails.

    Their Communist fever dream wishlist includes banning Airbnbs, grabbing golf courses for public housing, allowing noncitizen immigrants to vote in local elections, enforce a school curriculum that supports social justice, and eliminating all fossil fuel use by 2035.

    Scenes from Chicago:

    “He is not,” Johnson replied, accusing Trump of increasing “instability” in the country. “Where ICE and federal agents were present, we actually saw an increase in violence. In other words, the tension and the chaos that federal agents bring to cities in America, it actually is counter-productive,” he claimed.

    However, Johnson then acknowledged a sharp decline in violent crime. “Yes, we saw a 30 percent reduction in homicides, shooting, shooting victims, all down,” he said.

    California just keeps getting worse.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/locals-outraged-as-court-oks-california-skunk-train-s-eminent-domain-request/ar-AA1W51M1

    A yearslong saga involving the Skunk Train - an excursion that takes visitors on tours through the redwood forests of Mendocino County along a historic logging railroad - came to a head last month when a California appeals court gave the company that owns it the authority to condemn private property.

    The ruling came as a reversal of a 2022 trial court decision that landed in favor of Mendocino County local John Meyer. Mendocino Railway, the company that operates the Skunk Train, filed an action in 2020 to acquire Meyer's 20-acre property in the town of Willits in order to expand railway operations. The company argued that it had the right to acquire the parcel via eminent domain, which grants government agencies and public utilities, such as railroads, the right to seize private property.

    On Jan. 7, Division One of the First Appellate District of California published a ruling that reversed the trial court's 2022 decision, stating that "our supreme court long ago recognized that a public utility retains its status even if it does not directly serve the public."

    In fact, mass deportations, by definition means fewer jobs and a less productive economy.

    There are two problems with this. The first and most obvious is the assertion itself is simply not true. If a job comes open because of a deportation and is filled by a citizen or legal resident there is no job change at all. It's ridiculous people who make their living writing about economic make such obviously wrong assertions, but that's what happens when people allow their wishes to control them rather than develop the discipline to critically evaluate even their own assertions.

    But the bigger failure in this analysis is treating [America] as the relevant unit instead of recognizing it as an accumulation of the relevant analysis units, [Americans]. The best way to understand America is as a pass-through entity consisting of some 325 million Americans. Our focus should be on how this group is effected which is hidden by the focus on America large. This is not a mistake a libertarian should be making, it shows their allegiance to the group and not the individual. But only by making this mistake can Britschgi substitute foreigners for Americans and claim America is better off. Further it seems clear this is an intentional choice since it is common to focus on Americans in economic analysis.

    Ultimately this error allows benefits to foreigners to be misrepresented as benefits to Americans, which shows us the fundamental problem that left wingers and their faux-libertarian allies believe that the US government should not be run for the benefit of Americans.

      The domestic trucking industry is looking at it's best year since post Covid specifically due to immigration enforcement. Removal of illegal drivers, enforcement of English Language Proficiency, shutting down chameleon carriers operating out of foreign countries etc. are solving the over capacity that has led to a multi year recession in the industry. Rates are rising, native born and legal drivers are getting raises and legal carriers large and small are crawling out of bankruptcy. This is not speculation. The numbers are coming in right now. 2026 is projected to be the best year in the business since 2021 and it's entirely due to immigration enforcement.

      When the unemployment rates of illegals and even legal immigrants came out under Biden, higher than US citizen unemployment rate, I brought this up.

      They literally think illegals import a full job with every one that comes in, despite the data. If even 90% get a job, it means 500k have no job based on the lowest estimates of illegals under Biden. On top of that they ignore the employment shift away from citizens, as seen in increased welfare recipients.

      Immigration does not increase jobs at a 1 to 1 level. For reasons claim to be true it would have to increase it at more than a 1 to 1 level.

      Reason doesnt understand math.

      Importing fireign workers creates a job, that is, increased demand for workers. However, a supply of unemployed native born workers does not create new jobs.

      I am sorry, but I do not follow the logic of how foreign workers are magic and bring their own jobs into being by their mere presence in the country, while the availability native workers does nothing.

      Also, how does that help the native unemployed find a job?

      Democrats have also 180'd on ICE body cameras.

      https://civildeadline.com/dems-comments-on-dhs-using-body-cameras/

      Once it became clear that body cameras would actually be deployed, and deployed quickly, the narrative shifted almost overnight. Suddenly, according to reporting from Politico, Democrats discovered a serious concern they hadn’t mentioned before: too much transparency. The same cameras they demanded were now being framed as tools of “mass surveillance,” particularly of protesters. Privacy advocates raised alarms, and Democratic lawmakers followed suit, insisting on restrictions on how the footage could be used.

      The irony is difficult to miss. Congressional Democrats had made universal body camera use a prime demand for ICE accountability, especially after two fatal shootings in Minneapolis. But once critics warned that those cameras could capture protests and potentially feed into license plate readers or facial recognition systems, enthusiasm evaporated. The fear wasn’t abstract. Lawmakers openly worried that footage might be used to identify and track protesters.

      Translated into plain language, the concern is not that the cameras will lie, but that they will tell the truth. Body cameras don’t curate narratives; they record events as they happen. And that’s a problem if the footage undermines the carefully maintained image of “mostly peaceful protesters.” Video has a way of revealing harassment, assaults, and escalation that press releases conveniently omit.

    "One can imagine how much better the jobs report would look if America were embracing immigration"

    This entire article and all of the spins being floated by the Administration - and jobs reports in general - are based on wildly false premises and serve false narratives from the get-go. There IS NO "right" number of jobs. There IS NO way to even track jobs or unemployment in America. There IS NO way to link "the economy" to job growth or even define what "the economy" IS in the first place, let alone say whether it's good or not. These are private and governmental bureaucrats fabricating data and metrics to suit their narratives and justify their own lucrative jobs.
