New Vaccine Recommendations

Plus: The difficulties of rebuilding trust in public health, Maduro's arraignment, U.S. threats against Greenland, and more...

Vaccine recommendations change: On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) accepted recommendations from top federal health officials to reduce the number of vaccines routinely recommended for all children from the prior 17 to 11.

Vaccines that guard against diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella will continue to be recommended for all children. Vaccines for another six diseases, including the seasonal flu and Hepatitis B, will now be recommended only for high-risk populations or based on "shared clinical decision making" between a doctor and patient.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

The changes follow a memorandum issued by President Donald Trump in December directing the leadership of the CDC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to conduct a review comparing the U.S. vaccination schedule to recommended vaccines in other developed peer nations.

That review looked at 20 other countries' vaccine schedules, including the likes of Germany, Japan, and Denmark, all of which recommend fewer vaccines be routinely administered to all children.

"The data support a more focused schedule that protects children from the most serious infectious diseases while improving clarity, adherence, and public confidence," said acting CDC Director Jim O'Neill in a statement.

The HHS stressed on Monday that all 17 vaccines, including those no longer recommended for all children, will still be covered at no out-of-pocket cost to patients by government and private health insurance plans.

Trust regained? As such, the practical implications of Monday's decision would appear to be exceedingly minor.

According to the HHS, the purpose of the reduced schedule was to improve public trust in vaccine recommendations that was lost by the past administration's overzealous recommendation of the COVID-19 vaccine for children.

"Inaccurate CDC claims that the COVID-19 vaccine would prevent infection and transmission eroded public trust in the COVID-19 vaccine. The loss of trust in the COVID vaccines coincided with less adherence to the full CDC childhood vaccine schedule, which has resulted in lower immunization rates of well-established vaccines," reads Monday's decision memo authored by the heads of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The memo goes on to argue that aligning American vaccination recommendations with the "consensus" recommendations of other developed nations would rebuild trust and increase vaccine uptake.

It's certainly true that the public health establishment forfeited a lot of public trust during the pandemic by embracing maximalist COVID precautions and coercive mandates needed to enforce them, without evidence supporting their efficacy or much concern for the loss of freedom and personal decision making that those mandates entailed.

This coerciveness and highhandedness produced a vicious backlash that ended up with arch–vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the country's top health official.

While some might revel in that irony, it's beyond a doubt that Kennedy's elevation has produced a trust problem of its own. The man has a long history of crank views and crazy statements. He's continued to express a lot of them while in office.

As such, the changing of the CDC vaccination schedule to align with other European countries (which carries with it minimal practical implications) is now being treated as an all-out war on vaccines by the media and public health experts.

A calmer, more rational discussion of the risks and benefits of particular vaccines remains elusive.

Maduro in court, chaos in Caracas: Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were both arraigned on charges related to drug trafficking in a federal court in Manhattan on Monday.

The ousted Venezuelan leader entered a not-guilty plea while denouncing the U.S. military operation that captured him and his wife in their Caracas home.

"I am innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man, the constitutional president of my country," said Maduro in the courtroom, while Venezuelan immigrants gathered outside the courthouse to celebrate the dictator's capture.

Meanwhile, regime officials in Venezuela remain on edge. Gunfire erupted in Caracas overnight, which officials say was directed at "unauthorized" drones flying over the city.

President Donald Trump said in an interview with NBC on Monday that we are not at war with Venezuela and that the government, now led by Maduro's vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, was "cooperating" with the U.S.

The president said that elections in Venezuela would not happen soon, saying that "it's going to take a period of time. We have to nurse the country back to health."

  • While U.S. vaccine recommendations are becoming more Danish, Trump administration officials are talking about making Greenland a lot less Danish. TAPPER: Can you rule out that the US is going to take Greenland by force?

STEPHEN MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO.

Invasion? That's a dirty word, I'm told. We could possibly see, however, a huge influx of military-age men arriving in Greenland looking for economic opportunities and to get themselves some of that sweet Danish welfare system, and maybe for some women. Borders are like, just a line on a map, man.

Besides that, you could literally invade Greenland with a few good ol' boys in a few pickup trucks and probably conquer the whole island given they completely rely on Denmark for their military needs and have less than 60 thousand people.

It would probably take an entire weekend!

Not endorsing something as idiotic as invading Greenland, but it's amusing to think about.

It’s suggested that Greenland enter into a Compact of Free Association like the Marshall Islands or Micronesia, instead. They’d be independent, but outsource their defense to us.

          https://x.com/palladiummag/status/1877729489834197314?s=46&t=qeA47-JjK6vq0pfnxg60dA

But there is a neat solution: the U.S. and Greenland could sign a Compact of Free Association, the same agreement the U.S. has with the nations of Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands.

Such an agreement would be a win-win.

It would even be a win for Denmark.

These people are so fervently trapped in their victimhood Venn diagrams, they can't possibly imagine a group of white (or even white-adjacent) people seceding from Denmark or the EU or Spain or France (or Canada or Cook County) and going somewhere else for protection or governance.

Forcible overthrow by fascist, colonialist, white supremacists (even of other white people) is the only means by which they can conceive of a transfer of power.

German Antifa carry out a terrorist attack in Berlin

On Saturday morning, a terrorist attack targeted a power transmission line in the German capital, leaving tens of thousands of residents without electricity, and in some areas without heating, during a severe cold spell, Tagesspiegel reports.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by a German radical Antifa group calling itself “Vulkan.”

In a manifesto published by the group, the radicals described the arson as an “act of self-defense” and a protest against fossil fuels and the expansion of artificial intelligence.

The extremists set fire to a cable bridge crossing the Teltow Canal from the Lichterfelde power plant. Incendiary devices were placed beneath the cables, creating a prolonged, high-temperature blaze. The burned wires were then deliberately short-circuited using metal rods to intensify the damage.

As a result of the attack, five high-voltage and ten medium-voltage cables were damaged. Initially, around 45,000 households in southwestern districts of Berlin were left without power.

The timing made the impact especially severe: during freezing temperatures, residents were left not only without electricity but also without heating. Mobile communications and emergency services were also disrupted in the affected areas.

Restoration efforts are being delayed due to technical challenges. The damaged infrastructure involves different types of cables that must be reconnected under specialized conditions by highly qualified technicians.

Such repairs normally take up to five weeks, but emergency crews are now working around the clock in an effort to restore power within five days.

While some might revel in that irony, it's beyond a doubt that Kennedy's elevation has produced a trust problem of its own. The man has a long history of crank views and crazy statements. He's continued to express a lot of them while in office.

This is the laziness of reason writers. You can disagree with him, but his papers and books have hundreds of citations. His beliefs are based on actual studies and introspection. Most of covid was not. The talking heads on CNN and MSNBC definitely not. But reason calls the researched view the crank view.

Christian shows no interest in questions or his own research. He just wants to repeat bald narratives given to him by felow ignorant journalists. Because it is the easy path.

Ignore the long list of doctors that agree with RFK. Media and TV doctors declared him a crank, so rfk is a crank. Captured APA called him a crank, so repeat it. Never actually do work to verify. The reason method.

"I am innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man, the constitutional president of my country," said Maduro in the courtroom, while Venezuelan immigrants gathered outside the courthouse to celebrate the dictator's capture.

Lol. Blindly screams constitution like most leftists here.

How has only one article about Venezuela here mentioned he wasn't the recognized leader. The election was corrupt. Is it because reason tripled down on the 2020 cleanest election ever narrative so they cant admit any election is corrupt?

U.S. immigration officials are complaining that a Minnesota hotel canceled reservations made by immigration agents being deployed to the Minneapolis area, raising the tantalizing possibility of a bona fide Third Amendment case.

What a fucking retarded take. Never once did they threaten to force the company to board them. They publicized their actions.

And now Hilton has removed the hotel from their umbrella as the hotel chain was independent, run by Indians, and lied to Hilton that they stopped the policy.

Never was there a threat to force them to board soldiers.

This is the retarded shit that belongs on maddow. Not at a publication called reason.

Even left-wing rags like Slate.com know this.

          https://slate.com/technology/2021/07/noble-lies-covid-fauci-cdc-masks.html

Do we want public health officials to report facts and uncertainties transparently? Or do we want them to shape information to influence the public to take specific actions?

When experts or agencies deliver information to the public that they consider possibly or definitively false to further a larger, often well-meaning agenda, they are telling what is called a noble lie. Although the teller’s intentions may be pure—for example, a feeling of urgency that behavioral change is needed among the lay public—the consequences can undermine not only those intentions but also public trust in experts and science.

Even if we accept Fauci’s claim that he downplayed the importance of wearing masks because he didn’t want to unleash a run on masks, we might wonder how he knew that his noble lie would be more effective than simply being honest and explaining to people why it was important to assure an adequate supply of masks for medical workers.

We worry that vaccine policy among supporters of vaccines is increasingly anchored to the irrational views of those who oppose them—by always pursuing the opposite. Exaggerating the risk of the virus in the moment and failing to explore middle ground positions appear to be the antithesis of the anti-vax movement, which is an extremist effort to refuse vaccination. This seems a reflexive attempt to vaccinate at all costs—by creating fear in the public (despite falling adolescent rates) and pushing the notion that two doses of mRNA at the current dose level or nothing at all are the only two choices—a logical error called the fallacy of the excluded middle.

Noble lies—small untruths—yield unpredictable outcomes. Nietzsche once wrote, “Not that you lied to me, but that I no longer believe you, has shaken me.” Public health messaging is predicated on trust, which overcomes the enormous complexity of the scientific literature, creating an opportunity to communicate initiatives effectively. Still, violation of this trust renders the communication unreliable. When trust is shattered, messaging is no longer clear and straightforward, and instead results in the audience trying to reverse-engineer the statement based on their view of the speaker’s intent. Simply put, noble lies can rob confidence from the public, leading to confusion, a loss of credibility, conspiracy theories, and obfuscated policy.

Also would like to point out their recommended guidance is what parents should have always been doing:

"seasonal flu and Hepatitis B, will now be recommended only for high-risk populations or based on "shared clinical decision making" between a doctor and patient."

My wife and I did this with our kids for basically every shot, though we are medical. But my kids dont need annual COVID and flu shots, its fully ridiculous, and there was never good data or reasoning to support it. Everyone should be with a doctor they trust not to foist unnecessary things on them, and be involved in what they put in their kids bodies

Because Hep B affects newborns far worse than adults, Hep B testing for all mothers is not done, and it has a long incubation period after infection but before it is detectable. Hep B vaccine is safe and easy to administer. The benefits out weigh the risks by a large margin. There is no logic in remaining susceptible to preventable illnesses outside of rare medical necessity.

Given the known numbers, these risks can be calculated.

Personally I am very glad I never got polio or whopping cough.

You know you can actually read the story behind the hep b vaccine. It didnt improve any health for newborns. It was pushed to newborn because they were worried adults wouldn't get the vaccine willingly. It has zero to do with newborn health.

The hep B test is quick and simple. Much simpler than blind vaccinations. And doesnt effect t cell saturation being seen in new horns with the number of vaccines.

              But then again... youre retarded.

Every single country compared in that report has FAR better health outcomes for every vaccine/disease. Better outcomes for all childhood health outcomes. Better public health outcomes and a more competent public health service during the recent pandemic. Better public education, higher vaccine uptake, and lower vaccine resistance/politicization than the US. And the report identifies the dozens/hundreds of ways that the US could improve.

Just the first comparison listed in that report makes any rational person wonder what the fuck kind of 'experts' even exist in the US health system.
In 1980, American children following the CDC immunization schedule received 23 vaccine doses in 7 shots against 7 different diseases (1 MMR, 5 DTP, 1 Td) plus 4 OPV drops. In 2024, the recommended number of routine vaccines had risen to at least 84 vaccine doses in at least 57 shots for 17 diseases, plus the RSV monoclonal antibody immunization for a total of 18 diseases. This is more than other developed nations (Table 2).

The vaccination schedule for each of those countries is identified, in detail, in that table. The US public health system is mostly just corrupt and incompetent. It should have been completely gutted and overhauled once CDC was proven incompetent during COVID.

No surprise - you never hold anyone accountable.

OPEN LETTER TO LIBERALS, DEMOCRATS, LIBTARDS AND THE GENERAL WOKE MOB

I see too many fuckers in here gripping their ethically sourced oat milk latte so hard the cardboard sleeve is whimpering, staring at footage of us, actual Venezuelan human beings who have spent the last decade eating sleep for dinner, cheering for the Orange Man.

    HOW DARE WE, RIGHT!?

And it hurts, doesn’t it? It feels like your brain is trying to divide by zero while some asshole kicks your junk with Delta Force boots.

Since I know you ain't gonna read all this, this is the summary: FUCK YOU and your "ACKSHUALLY..." gag reflex.

Too bad your squirrel mind can't fathom a guy in Caracas, who has lost 40 pounds because of a collapsing economy and whose local currency is less valuable than a used napkin, is weeping with joy because he thinks 47th is his ticket out of a socialist fever dream.

And yes, we have been waiting for this moment for literal DECADES.

But your immediate, lizard-brain reaction is to push up your glasses, scoff and say, "Um, ACKSHUALLY, do these Venezuelans realize that Trump’s stance on globalism is intellectually inconsistent with the neoliberal framework required for true South American stability?"

No, you absolute dipshit. We don't.

Because we’re too busy being excited about the possibility of living in a country where Maduro's colectivos won't shoot us in the face with a sawed off shotgun, JUST FOR WALKING DOWN THE STREET.

You're more worried about the optics of a right-wing populist getting a win than you are about the fact that Maduro’s government has been running a nationwide "Hunger Games" reality for years, and nobody, not you, not the 'international community' has cared one bit about us through all this.

You: "But Trump is a threat to our institutions! He's literally HITLER!!1"

Gonna tell you a personal anecdote, you liberal POS. I personally know a guy who was snatched off the street just for BEING IN THE WRONG WHATSAPP GROUP.

The guy was disappeared for almost a year. His family didn't know if he was dead or alive, or where he was detained. Nothing.

AND HE DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE HE WAS IN THAT WHATSAPP GROUP.

    A FUCKING WHATSAPP GROUP.

And yes, that's the reason I'm Venezuelan, I'm living in EUROPE (shocking, right? how do Venezuelans exist outside Venezuela, you might ask!?) and I can't enter the country anymore. Or at least, not yet. Because I would disappear without a trace. Just like your abroadian-lifestyle-funding tax money in the liberal blue shithole you live right now.

Any Venezuelan would literally vote for a sentient head of lettuce if it promised to stop these motherfuckers from torturing and raping our families.

I WISH I WAS JOKING, YOU PIECE OF SHIT.

Your very own problem is that you view the world through a lens of virtue-cosplay. To you, supporting the "wrong" person is a social death sentence.

You can't fathom that for us, politics isn't about "identity" or "discourse".

For us, politics have become a matter of SURVIVAL.

And we have been betrayed SO MANY TIMES by the so-called political opposition, we're tired of all this shit. We've grown too old and too weary to listen to your whining about 'International Law'.

If a guy saves you from a bear attack, you don't stand over your bleeding shins and lectursplain to him about his shitty tweets from 2016.

    You say "Thank you."

And I'm PROUD to THANK Donald Fucking J. Trump for this.

But to you, modern liberal, rot of all societies, our "Thank You" is the real tragedy here, because it means the "Bad Man" got a nice gold star. Utter narrative fuckery that rains diarrhea on your carefully curated, elitist worldview.

So, while you're busy writing a 14-part thread about how our celebrations are "uninformed" or "dangerous for the global narrative," we are celebrating because we see a light at the end of a very long, very dark, very hungry tunnel.

We don't give a SINGLE FLYING FUCK about being tweetshamed by some prick in a Brooklyn loft. We're worried about not dying in the bowels of El Helicoide. Google that, coño e' tu madre.

So take your "nuance", put it inside a pineapple and shove the whole thing up your ass. We are allowed to be happy that our dictator is going to wear an orange jumpsuit, even if the guy helping us do it makes your therapist rich.

    The Insurrection Act is coming.

    https://x.com/ekolovesyou/status/2008302620067147830?s=46&t=qeA47-JjK6vq0pfnxg60dA

Trump issued it eight months ago. Governors called it an immigration order.

April 28, 2025. President Trump signs Executive Order 14287 in the Oval Office. The title reads like standard bureaucracy: “Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens.”

But in the third paragraph, a single phrase changes everything:
Sanctuary jurisdictions are engaging in “a lawless insurrection against the supremacy of Federal law.”

Insurrection. The exact statutory term from 10 U.S.C. §§ 332-333. The language that unlocks the Insurrection Act of 1807.

Georgetown Law professor Martin Lederman publishes analysis within days. The executive order mirrors Section 334 requirements. The formal proclamation to disperse before military deployment. It designates unlawful actors, issues formal warning, establishes consequences.

It’s a long read, but worth it. This may be what’s coming next after states like Illinois have tried to nullify federal law with state laws.

    https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-sues-jb-pritzker-kwame-raoul-over-illinois-bivens-act

Today, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul, challenging their unconstitutional attempt to regulate federal law enforcement officers through the so-called “Illinois Bivens Act” and “Court Access, Safety, and Participation Act.”

Not only are the laws illegal attempts to regulate and discriminate against the federal government through novel causes of action, but, as alleged in the complaint, the laws threaten the safety of federal officers who have faced an unprecedented wave of harassment, doxxing, and even violence. Threatening officers with ruinous liability and even punitive damages for executing federal law and for simply protecting their identities and their families also chills the enforcement of federal law and compromises sensitive law enforcement operations. The danger is acute.

Wow. That explains a lot. Have to admit I was scratching my head when Trump withdrew the NG without comment. His lawyers are playing the long game and what looks like defeat is actually victory.

I am somewhat skeptical the IL Bivens Act which allows suits against fed officers to survive. But the other part about court access should fair better. IL can regulate their own state court systems under the 10th amendment; can they not?

The feds did sue and lose over IL's so called sanctuary policies so that is a point in IL's favor on the latter. I don't think IL can override federal agents' qualified immunity and subject them to personal suits in state court for enforcing federal law but I could be wrong because I believe it says it only applies when fed agents violate the state or federal constitution when doing so but again... i am not sure the state wins on that. The one is regulating our own court system the other is regulating federal agents' behavior and conduct. Seems a distinction that could be important as the case progresses.

A few more billionaires leave California and the tax baseline will feel the pain.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/economy/bay-area-billionaires-flee-to-texas-florida-amid-new-tax-proposal/ar-AA1TDDUD

Peter Thiel, the founder of a San Francisco private investment firm, announced that he opened a new office in Miami last week, and venture capitalist David Sacks said he opened an office in Austin, Texas. They mark just two of the wealthiest Californians who are deemed a flight-risk now that a ballot measure that would tax them 5%, just one time, has suddenly gained legitimacy.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/i-m-done-california-s-proposed-2026-billionaire-tax-would-ve-cost-in-n-out-s-owner-435-million-good-timing-that-she-left/ar-AA1TCo8L

‘I’m done.’ California’s proposed 2026 billionaire tax would’ve cost In-N-Out’s owner $435 million. Good timing that she left.

those moves have already begun. Thiel reportedly signed a lease in December for another office for Thiel Capital in Miami's tony Wynwood neighborhood, in addition to his existing office space in Los Angeles. Sacks has reportedly had business in Austin for a few years but recently relocated there last month while still maintaining offices in San Francisco and New York. Even Larry Page, the Google co-founder, was reportedly toying with severing ties with California over the proposed tax.

While partially true, Molly, you might want to consider that our trust in "scientists" also needs restoring. A combination of burgeoning fake study publications by the over two thousand so-called scientific "journals" over the last few decades has made even those of us trained and experienced in reading scientific reports very cautious; coupled with government-funded "science" designed to reach conclusions desired by the officials who commissioned them and the suppression of legitimate scientific opinions that contradict the official line; renders your reliance upon "the science" pretty silly!

"They have no concept of objective facts"

"medical science, or science of any type"

      "Appeal to reason "

Another low watt leftist on the internet who continually blurbs "facts, logic, reason, the science (TM)" yet demonstrates none of them

There used to be a concept in movies called "show, dont tell" in which you paint the picture through good storytelling, good scenes, and a script that tells the tale rather than just beating the audience over the head with a line or 2 of exposition such as openly just blurting out "and Jane was smarter than any scientist she ever encountered" rather than actually demonstrating it through well crafted scenes.

You constantly spout "muh logic, muh facts" but literally put forward nothing but ad hominem and appeal to authority. You spout "muh Science" but side with a regime that recommended children who have essentially a near zero mortality from COVID all get mass vaccinated against it (basically the opposite of real science).

You are much more of a "tell" than a "show" or "prove" guy from what I can measure.

But sure, make a couple more posts about reason, logic, and science, thatll convince a few 10 year olds you know what youre talking about

False. The heavily regulated health insurance industry bases coverage for immunizations upon the "official" pronouncements. Whether those edicts are "mandatory" or not in that context is empty semantics. Pharmaceutical companies depend heavily upon protection against torts from Federal regulations and many of the most important immunizations would not be available at all without insurance coverage and protection against lawsuits.

This will not and cannot restore public trust in public health. There has never been any trust in public healh to restore. Public health overstepped all reasonable boundaries at the Federal level long, long ago by trying to assert a national emergency of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, smoking and using those excuses to intrude in the health care financing system to the detriment of all of us. Who will restore public trust in government health officials?

Yes, public health lost much of its credibility by sticking its nose into people’s lifestyles instead of monitoring actual communicable diseases. But the moment that really did them in was when they said that going to George Floyd/BLM protests was more important for public health than stopping the spread of COVID.

"This Seems bad"...it seems that the woman in question (yes, I *am* assuming her gender identity), had led a street-blocking protest shortly before the interview, then when police made a move to clear the streets, she stepped aside to be interviewed. Cops reportedly waited in their car for her to finish her interview before arresting her...she was NOT arrested for the interview nor her comments about Madura and/or Trump.

Jessica Plichta on Sunday for allegedly violating the law as she protested the U.S.’ capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, footage caught by west Michigan-based WZZM 13 showed.

Plichta was talking to WZZM in Grand Rapids, Michigan, when two police officers suddenly pulled up and arrested her for obstructing a roadway and disobeying a lawful command by an officer. Little to her knowledge, the officers waited in their vehicles several feet behind her and waited for her to finish talking.

    /sigh/

No. Hotels in Minnesota refusing to host DHS agents is not/will not be a Third Amendment case...

    Amendment 3 of the Constitution:

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

    1. DHS agents are not soldiers.

    2. Paid-for hotel stays (i.e. business transactions that are the standard course of hotels) do not constitute "quartering".

There is only a case to be made if the FedGov coerces the hotel(s) to honor the reservations and do business with FedGov (by renting rooms to DHS agents), but, for reasons 1 & 2, it will not be a 3A case. At best, based on the teensy, tiny bit of information in the Quick Hits, there may be a breech-of-contract case against the hotel(s).

    * Suggestions of 14A / Civil Rights and Public Accommodations violations are similarly addled by the fact that status as FedGov agents does not fall under race, creed, color, age, etcetera protected classes.
