First Private Spacewalk
Plus! Robots doing math, New York’s top cop resigns, election gambling is legal.

Have space suit, will travel. On Thursday morning, Jared Isaacman, the billionaire founder of payments company Shift4 Payments, took the first commercial space walk as part of the Polaris Dawn mission, in collaboration with Elon Musk's SpaceX. He looked extremely cool doing it.
That's not just because everyone looks cool in space. Isaacman took the spacewalk in an Extravehicular Activity Suit, a brand new space suit developed over the last two and a half years by SpaceX as part of a project to create the sort of comparatively low-cost space suits that could one day be worn by humans on missions to other planets.
A typical NASA space suit costs between $15 and 22 million, according to Popular Mechanics, and NASA has spent more than $600 million developing suits over the years. These aren't exactly quick-to-make, mass-market products.
Humans aren't going to colonize the moon or Mars with what amounts to high-priced custom couture. With the new suits, SpaceX's long-term goal is essentially to transform the space suit business into something resembling fast fashion.
"Building a base on the Moon and a city on Mars will require millions of space suits," reads a caption on a SpaceX YouTube video showing off the new suits earlier this year. "The development of this suit and the execution of the spacewalk will be important steps toward a scalable design for space suits on future long-duration missions as life becomes multiplanetary."
Isaacman echoed the idea. "We need space suits," he told CNN. "And, you know, they shouldn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. We need tens of thousands of them someday."
The new suits boast fancy features and materials, providing what the company says is "greater mobility, a state-of-the-art helmet heads-up display (HUD) and camera, new thermal management textiles, and materials borrowed" from the company's rocket capsule program.
Importantly, they also look awesome.
You might think this is a silly observation. And fans of strictly utilitarian clothing may not care.
But Musk seems to understand that making space travel look chic and exciting is important for generating the enthusiasm, and the will, to make risky, expensive space travel ventures happen. Engineering is obviously important—especially when your suit is the only thing protecting you from the icy vacuum of outer space—but so is marketing.
If you're going to hang out in the great cosmic void, why not look cool doing it? Space fashion: It's truly the final frontier.
The AI chatbots are solving math problems now. Speaking of new frontiers, OpenAI, which makes the ChatGPT AI, released yet another version of its large language model yesterday. And unlike your old Barbie doll, this one can do math.
Up until now, GPT-style AI tools have tended to struggle even with fairly straightforward math problems.
Sure, ChatGPT could write you a college-level essay on Dante. (Here's the opener it just gave me: "Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy is not just a journey through the afterlife; it's a journey through the human soul, revealing the eternal consequences of our earthly actions." Better get an A for that one.)
But calculus? Well, that was another story. As an English major, this is by far the most relatable thing about ChatGPT.
The new model, named OpenAI o1, was designed to be good at reasoning through complex, multi-step tasks and problems, including acrostics and difficult medical diagnoses.
That might mean somewhat slower responses: ChatGPT typically responds to a query instantly, but OpenAI says the new model "thinks before it answers," and thus "can produce a long internal chain of thought before responding to the user."
Up until now, in other words, LLMs have been motormouths. But the new model is the pensive type.
It's always the quiet ones you have to worry about.
New York City Cops. Last week, federal agents seized the phone of New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban. Yesterday, Caban resigned from his position, on the request of Mayor Eric Adams.
"The news around recent developments has created a distraction for our department, and I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work, or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD," Caban said.
Seems like kind of a, ahem…cop out?
Tom Donlon, a former FBI official, will replace him on an interim basis.
We still don't know exactly what Caban is being investigated for, but according to the New York Post, "the probe centers around sweeping corruption and influence peddling."
So far, Caban hasn't been charged with anything, but it sounds like maaaaaaybe someone needs to spend time mulling over Dante and the eternal consequences of their earthly actions.
Scenes from a Washington, D.C., cocktail bar: Silver Lyan, one of Washington, D.C.'s most innovative cocktail bars, recently unveiled a new menu devoted to taboos. There are high-science concoctions inspired by cannibalism and, uh, John Fetterman's cargo shorts, as well as a very complicated drink called "Banned in Boston" that references, among other things, early Progressive abstinence movements. Long live the new flesh? Well, maybe not. David Cronenberg fans shouldn't get too excited just yet. Silver Lyan mastermind Ryan Chetiyawardana told Washingtonian, "We're not serving anything related to human flesh at all." Talk about not having any skin in the game.

- It continues to be very funny, and very frustrating, that the Department of Justice antitrust suit against Google, which is focused on search, is happening at almost the exact moment that Google's search dominance is threatened by AI tools like ChatGPT.

Public records show that Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger’s office filed 99 child sex crime cases between January 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.Nearly 10% of the child sex cases in Baltimore County, involving nine defendants over a 17-month period, involved illegal immigrants from Central American countries.
Customs records show that illegal immigrant defendants who were initially detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) entered the country illegally at the nation’s southern border. Nearly all were in violation of parole when they were living in Maryland.

When immigration is criminal, only criminals will immigrate.
Don’t conflate legal, properly documented immigration with illegal, undocumented immigration.
Man. Open border acolytes tend to be the least witty. Thanks for another data point.
The good citizens of Springfield, Ohio have their own opinions.
BTW keep your pets inside, watch your children.
Immigration is not criminal. Not following the rules is a different story. Like purchasing a gun. Ask Hunter.
What about when the rules themselves are unjust? Like gun laws in California for example. Should everyone just suck it up or move, or say fuck you and go shoot off their high capacity magazines in the desert? Criminal and wrong are not synonyms.
This will be great. Tell us how immigration laws are unjust.
Here is my counter.
https://www.lewrockwell.com/1970/01/hans-hermann-hoppe/on-free-immigration-and-forced-integration/
Or.
https://www.lewrockwell.com/2018/07/hans-hermann-hoppe/immigration-and-libertarianism/
Sorry. A bit more thought out than a bumper sticker. So you’ll ignore.
As I've said a million times before, the alternative to the current immigration system isn't no laws at all. So I'm going to ignore your strawman dressed up in a false dichotomy.
But what good is new laws or a revamping of law if one's morality can override them?
That's why laws need to be moral and just. Yes I understand that not everyone is going to agree on what that means, but at some point the law goes so overboard that most people can agree that it no longer serves justice. When this happens people must choose between morality and the law.
Whose morality, whose vision of just? Yours?
Remember the mistake you made last time trying yo define morality. Lol.
What is a just immigration law? Answer the fucking question. Because in thread after thread it appears to be justifying 150B a year, displacement of current citizens, ignoring crimes, ignoring basically all negative costs.
Define your just system or stop fucking complaining just to complain.
Even Maine is effected by your fucking immigrant advocacy as your tax dollars and various aid funds go bankrupt and you see almost none of the fucking costs.
""Define your just system or stop fucking complaining just to complain."'
What good is his system if I feel I have a moral obligation to not obey it? That's the part he's not getting. If individual morality trumps laws, then nothing he could offer would stand in his own example.
It is even worse with his appeals to morality and freedom because his appeals simply elevate the freedoms of some over the freedoms of others, as Hoppes explains.
One person's freedom can have negative externalalities on others.
I'm sure he would say everyone has a right to pursue shelter, food, etc. But he wouldn't advocate as to defending theft and squatting.
Yet with this problem of migration that is exactly his form of morality. It is why he will always ignore the costs and negative externalities. He wants to elevate the freedoms of illegal immigrants over the citizens.
It isn't a moral argument, but because his view is not well thought out that is always his go to.
He will use an example of the right to hire an illegal immigrant and then ignore the takings of citizens to pay for the immigrants house, food, schooling, etc. The government takings from citizens is not a moral question to sarc. If it eas he would address it in his moral immigration system, which he won't.
You often find the weakest arguments draped in appeals to morality and the forced exclusion of all arguments showing immoral actions caused by the people making the weak argument.
Not purely libertarian buy a good discussion on use of moral appeal by open border advocates.
https://cis.org/Oped/Morality-Borders
Long response short.
Fuck the rights of citizens and the costs they assume for sarcs vision of morality.
That has to be one of the best strawman takedowns I've ever seen.
Debating moral systems with moral relativists is a waste of your time, generally. These types don't give a fuck about any moral system beyond their distaste for the people who do have them.
Not universally true I suppose but it's close enough that the exceptions prove the rule in my view.
If the law should be 'moral' it's worth discussing what system of morality the law should follow.
Where is the strawman sarc? You’re just admitting you have no well thought out idea to use to defend your advocacy.
How many times have you screamed racism when someone defends immigration laws for fucks sake.
Where is the strawman sarc?
Oh, I don't know. Maybe that long-winded comment where you explain what
Iyour strawman thinks and then argue against it.Why are you so incapable of answering simple questions sarc? Who do you think you’re fooling? DemSalad?
If you don't wany your amazing argument misconstrued put forward a clear and concise argument. You're incapable. Because you put zero thought into your views.
""When this happens people must choose between morality and the law.""
And if they choose their morality, they may go to jail. Why? Because the morality behind the democratic process of voting for laws will supersede your individual morality of not obeying in the court of law.
That’s true. Now if the person is smart then they’ll weigh the chances of getting caught vs breaking the law and make a decision accordingly. That’s a totally different thing than just blindly obeying (and defending) the law because the law is the law.
""That’s a totally different thing than just blindly obeying (and defending) the law because the law is the law.""
Which I don't think anyone is doing with immigration. We have the most liberal immigration laws in the world.
What's the morality of strangers showing up on your doorstep demanding to be feed, clothed, housed, and education at your expense?
Which I don’t think anyone is doing with immigration.
That is exactly what the dipshit I refuse to dignify is doing with immigration.
What’s the morality of strangers showing up on your doorstep demanding to be feed, clothed, housed, and education at your expense?
As I've said so many times, Biden fucked up when he let migrants stay here while waiting for their court date. Trump was right to make them wait in the last sanctuary state they were in before applying here.
I draw a distinction between asylum seekers and people looking for work.
The strawman Jesse rails against says Biden did great and there's no distinction. That's why I refuse to entertain his arguments. There's no point when he calls me a liar and continues to attack the voices in his head that he claims are mine.
""That is exactly what the dipshit I refuse to dignify is doing with immigration.""
Biden?
Sarc, do i really need to link your posts advocating for illegals to stay in the country if just given work permits?
You’ve spent the last few days dismissing the importation of 15k Haitians into a town of 60k for fucks sake. The town is not built for a structural increase of 25% over 2 years. It has costs, causes inflation, we see displacement of residents to higher gov funded rents. Etc.
Shit you defend day in and day out.
You won’t clarify your position because you know it will expose you as a hypocrite.
Now you say you want stay in Mexico after 4 years of advocating for every illegal immigrant the right to cross illegally? Lol. Rage against tariffs while ignoring the much higher costs of illegal immigration? Lol.
You’re so full of shit.
Even with the work permits you demand, the costs to citizens remains. 6M illegals have crossed, right now Feds say there are approx 1M job openings. Are you now advocating those without jobs be deported? Yes or no?
If you're not demanding deportation or a closed border for more, what is your moral answer to allowing then to stay without costing those who are here?
"As I’ve said so many times, Biden fucked up when he let migrants stay here while waiting for their court date. Trump was right to make them wait in the last sanctuary state they were in before applying here"
IIRC this is the one you did a eurasia/eastasia flip on one day a few months back, and have been repeatedly saying you always believed.
I told you to limit your lies and false premises to one or two.
One I won’t let stand though. I haven’t said a word about Springfield other than to comment on Trump’s lie and your desperate attempts to justify it. Everything you claim I said is all in your head.
Failure to address the other lies and false premises with this comment should not be taken as tacit agreement.
Sarc, have you ever realized you can't actually discuss an argument at all? You just immediately claim everyone is lying, you never said what you've said, erc?
Answwe the fucking question. If the number of illegals is greater than the number of jobs, what is your moral answer? You can't answer it.
Knowing these are low wage workers, should citizens subsumed costs given to them through government resources? Yes or no? You can't answer it.
Your argument is based upon the false premise that there are a fixed amount of jobs and there’s a fixed amount of tax revenue. You accuse me of fixing all the variables, yet you’re fixing the amount of jobs and the amount of taxes paid.
What you don’t take into account is that immigrants create demand by buying stuff. That means more jobs and more taxes paid.
Why don’t you try playing by your own rules?
Lol. Talk about fucking strawman. Who said there were a fixed number? You think jobs just magically appear because someone crosses a border? Lol. These are low wage workers. Their input unto the market doesn’t have a 1:1 illegal to job creation. Let alone the effect on displaced citizens for low wage jobs.
How fucking ignorant are you?
Infrastructure and industry take time to grow. You don’t just import 6M and boom, jobs magically appear. So what do you want to happen until then retard? What’s labor participation right now?
What you don’t take into account is that immigrants create demand by buying stuff. That means more jobs and more taxes paid.
With what jobs? With the 150B of government spending on them?
The current estimated taxes is 25B against 150B in spending. Do you think low wage workers are tax positive?
Every fucking view you have is one of uninformed ignorance.
Lol. So explain your set of just laws then dumbass.
Be specific.
I'm having a conversation with an adult. Go away.
It is adult to not explain your position?
What's wrong sarc, can't make an intelligent argument?
Sarc, he quoted Hoppe. He actually owns the Hoppe book! That means you're required to genuflect and accept whatever he says.
I looked at the first link and started to get dizzy keeping track of all the strawmen. The second one started with the word “Left-libertarian” and I just stopped there. Characterizing everything as left-right is just stupid because there are no defining principles for either of those sides. They’re just a mishmash of issues that organically grew as politicians traded them like baseball cards in order to get votes. For example conservationists on the right could have easily become the defenders of the environment if global warmists on the left hadn’t appropriated the issue first.
So I find this whole left/right thing to be for small minds, which is why I tend to use the terms in a facetious, sarcastic, mocking or ironic way, but rarely in a serious way.
Lol. You didnt even click the fucking link you dishonest shit.
Please counter one of his arguments. You won’t.
Amazing watching you and demsalad pretend to actually be intellectuals. And these are your rebuttals. Fucking hilarious.
I’m glad you’re demonstrating yet again your hate of actual libertarian theorists and substituting your own (never done) while claiming to actually have read libertarian theorists lol.
Thanks DemSalad. As strong an intellectual argument as sarc. Fucking dumbasses.
Bet you didn’t read it either. Because you don’t actually care to actually have an honest conversation.
Sorry you’ve been a libertarian as long as Chase has. Would think in 4 years you could actually read a book.
Do you want some other links that aren’t Hoppe to not read?
""What about when the rules themselves are unjust? ""
It's why voting matters.
You claim morality is an excuse, but then you want to be the god of who has morality or not. That's what you do when you claim Trump has no morals. Who are you to be the judge of who gets to exclude laws based on your definition of morality?
Criminal is the violation of law and that's what we are talking about.
When the law becomes an instrument for punishing this group because that group doesn't like them, then it is fundamentally immoral and unjust. Voting doesn't really matter when that group is always going to win. What is someone on the receiving end of this injustice supposed to do?
How are enforcing immigration laws punishment?
The counter. Why is violating immigration laws rewarded?
""When the law becomes an instrument for punishing this group because that group doesn’t like them""
That's not what is happening with immigration. The only group it punishes is the group that doesn't obey the rules.
Remember this?
https://reason.org/wp-content/uploads/files/a87d1550853898a9b306ef458f116079.pdf
What is moral and just about that?
It should be no surprise that some people, especially economically desperate people, say fuck it and cross the border illegally.
Again, What good is you trying to fix it if you think that morality can supersede your fix?
One fix that I would make is removing laws that prevent people from legally earning a living.
Do you think that prohibiting people from working is moral and just? Would you rebel against removing such laws?
Fixes that I would make would involve more freedom.
So my head starts to hurt when you tell me that there's no point in removing restrictions if morality can supercede that.
Why does your fix matter if I can ignore the rules?
I would believe in reciprocity.
If Italy would allow US workers to enter Italy to work, I would allow the same.
Dude, that makes no sense. How can you ignore laws that allow you to earn a living? By not earning a living?
6M illegals have crossed under Joe. 1M job openings exist per the fed.
How do you not see the issues with your plan?
Likewise what is the moral argument to allow displacement of low paid citizens with lower paid immigrants? Especially in a regulatory environment where those immigrants are granted welfare and various business costs like ACA don't apply to foreign workers?
You think you can hold all variables static and adjust one without any intervariable dependencies. That is not how society operates.

I wasn't aware the United States was the only country in the world with jobs. Even given the problem of 6M vs 1M mentioned above.
You lie and claim I hold all variable static as you argue that there are a fixed number of jobs.
You falsely accuse me of doing something while you are doing that very same thing!
lol
And you wonder why I don't respond to your arguments.
Btw,
Coming to the US because Boeing wants you to work for them is different than them showing up at your doorstep demanding a job.

In what way are you not? This is your chance to actually explain your stance. You won’t though.
In what way are you not? This is your chance to actually explain your stance. You won’t though.
I never said I do. You say I do and then if I miss that lie/false premise while responding you then claim tacit agreement. I’m not playing your rhetorical game.
This is your chance to actually explain your stance. You won’t though.
Lol.
Btw, still less hoop jumping than the rest of the world.
A friend of mine had to travel to the town his grandfather was born to find a written entry in a book as part of the process to become a dual citizen of Italy.
Nothing, but the alternative isn't to just sneak in, both my brother and my sister had to go through all that when they immigrated to the US with their American spouses.
It sucked for them.
But they didn't become new Americans by ignoring those laws, jumping the border, and getting a free house, free food, free healthcare and $2k a month for breaking that law.
Sarcasmic, your position is morally indefensible. It is spitting in the face of every new American who respected the country's laws to become one.
Should immigration rules be relaxed? Hell yeah. But what you guys are doing is worse.
""Should immigration rules be relaxed? Hell yeah.""
Agreed. But his position is worse than that because even if we relax them one's morality can override them.
A good friend of mine married a woman from Brazil.
Yeah, it's definitely a process that could be shortened.
But his position is worse than that because even if we relax them one’s morality can override them.
Explain how morality can override removing restrictions. I can easily see how morality can override restrictions. One can just ignore them. But how does morality override liberty? Only way I can see liberty being overridden is with law, not morality.
""Explain how morality can override removing restrictions.""
Your argument has been morality overriding law.
My argument has been that laws laws must be moral and just if they are to be followed. Otherwise people who choose morality over the law will not obey them. They might grudgingly follow them if there’s a real risk of getting caught, but that's not the same as obeying the law because the law is the law.
For example laws that prohibit people from earning a living and feeding themselves are going to be ignored by hungry people who can’t get permission to work.
Mayors, Governors, guys with badges can continue to make arrests.
Like NYC and guns.
Wondering if this is the point where I link to sarcs last discussion on laws and morality where he linked the essay that the quote he is relying from not understanding what the term morality meant in the essay.
The administration's policies fully punishes the group that *does* obey the rules. It allows all the line jumpers access to benefits and handouts while people who have paid their fees, files their papers, waited their turn are backlogged behind the massive number of fraudulent claims of asylum that must be adjudicated.
That is unless a certain group lives in Britain for which they can be punished for saying anything unsavory about the poor desperate gimmigrants.
1. Way to take this off topic.
2. Nice straw man. Build him yourself?
3. Again what the fuck did this have to do with immigration laws?
4. Pour Sarc.
Illegal immigration is by definition illegal and therefore a criminal act. I do like the lefts changing the language from Illegals to migrants. They are not migrants. They are illegal invaders.
Indeed and when they illegally drive a vehicle, no license, no insurance and very little or none at all knowledge of American traffic laws, the havoc and deaths they create is getting worse by the day.

Who Rigged the Debate for Kamala? Her Best Friend and Her Sorority Sister

THERE YOU HAVE IT: ABC News debate "moderator" Linsey Davis boasts on air about literally being Kamala Harris' sorority sister.
...Dana Walden, a senior Disney executive whose portfolio includes ABC News, is one of Vice President Kamala Harris’ “extraordinary friends,” according to a report in the New York Times.
Walden and Harris have known each other since 1994, while their husbands, Matt Walden and Doug Emhoff, have known each other since the 1980s.
Dana Walden has donated to dozens of Democrats and contributed to Harris’ political campaigns since at least 2003, when she ran for district attorney in San Francisco.
Honesty hurts the Democrats. Hopefully nobody would have dreamed of using the threat of revealing Biden's senility as a means to get something out of the administration.
What does it say that 2 weeks of telling the truth can end any Democrat, including an incumbent President?

“In an era in which misinformation spreads fast and furious, Davis’ real-time fact check cut through the proceedings like a sharp blade,” the LA Times wrote. “Davis, wearing pink glasses while speaking to The Times over breakfast at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia, said the decision to attempt to correct the candidates was in response to the June 27 CNN debate between Trump and President Biden, whose poor performance led to his exit from the race.”
The outlet added that in the weeks leading up to the debate, everyone involved at ABC played out “various scenarios” in table read-like sessions to ensure their ability to “fact check” in real time to avoid a redo of Trump’s debate against Biden.

It was truly amazing. What does this election look like if they treat her just like they do Trump until November 5?
What would the Democratic Party be like if the media were simply honest?
A lot more like the Greens.

https://www.breitbart.com/the-media/2024/09/11/nolte-time-issues-humiliating-correction-admitting-kamala-supports-taxpayer-funded-gender-surgery-for-illegals/
Correction, Sept. 11
The original version of this story mischaracterized as false Donald Trump’s statement accusing Kamala Harris of supporting “transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison” As a presidential candidate in 2019, Harris filled out a questionnaire saying she supported taxpayer-funded gender transition treatment for detained immigrants.
Nobody reads corrections.
All I am hearing is that Trump lied about lying! Add another to his count!
Despite the proclamation of Kamala handedly winning the debate, the overt bias by media seems to be triggering the opposite backlash. Even prominent democrats are now calling for a review of the ABC News agency.
Mark Penn, a former top adviser to Bill and Hillary Clinton, called Thursday for ABC to launch a formal internal investigation into its news division's planning and execution of this week's presidential debate to determine if there was some effort at "rigging the outcome of this debate."
"I actually think they should do a full internal investigation, hire an outside law firm. I don't know how much of this was planned in advance," Penn told the "John Solomon Reports" podcast.
"I don't know what they told the Harris campaign. I think the day after, suspicion here is really quite high, and I think a review of all their internal texts and emails really should be done by an independent party to find out to what extent they were planning on, in effect, you know, fact-checking just one candidate and in effect, rigging the outcome of this debate. I think the situation demands nothing less than that," he added.

You know the bias was bad when a former Clinton adviser and CNN call ABC out on it.
Better ask why they are calling it out.
My guess is so there will be a fake investigation that will be used to counter the claims. We investigated and found nothing. Calling out ABC was a MAGA lie.
My guess is there will be no investigation and “everyone” will forget about it until 2028.
Trump “lying” about this is already the primary news story about this despite the blatant bias of the moderators. In some ways, this is Trump’s fault because he can’t be reasonable and say “it was biased,” he has to be Trump and say, “It was rigged.” To many, claims of “rigged” from Trump is crying wolf.
And just like the eating pets, the media gets to dismiss the whole bias claim…at least unless and until evidence of rigging is revealed as has happened with Hillary in the past.
“Trump “lying” about this is already the primary news story about this despite the blatant bias of the moderators.”
This is the key to it all. The important part is loudly shouting liar in front of the crowd. Making mea culpas and apologies later, quietly, behind closed doors don’t matter.
Look at the fifty-centers here still pretending Trump/Russia, “Suckers and Losers” or “Fine people” weren’t hoaxes. Hell, even Biden who knows better repeated the lies in the debate.
What's the venn diagram between those making fun of Vance/Trump claiming people are eating pets and those who still think a Russian hooker peed on Trump?
They are both unsubstantiated rumors.
It would just look like a single circle because there is no difference.
They will find some minor wrongdoing next Feb and nothing will happen.
That would probably explain why the debate didn't really move the needle all that much, and the journoscum are raising the alarm that it actually helped Trump with undecideds because he was actually staying on topic while Kamala simply spouted the same old generalities.
Too bad Trump isn't more focused, or he could have wiped the floor with her even with Disney/ABC's thumbs on the scale.
Yeah. Across the board it seemed to have helped Trump with undecideds. Pre debate polling said those voters wanted to know her plans. But the TDS media wanted her to rile up Trump. Trump is who he is, undecideds have 8 years of it. But the pundits, including here, cared more about point scoring than effective messaging. Even Reason fell for it.
What's funny is Reason and the pundits in 2020 were against the point scoring of Trump, yet cheered Kamala for it.
Watching it live, she seemed to be doing pretty well. By 8am the next morning, I can't remember her saying anything that would help her cause, but Trump's good stuff was easily memorable. The most memorable thing, other than the Cheney endorsement, out of her mouth was the glowing review she gave herself on her visit to Ukraine. Everyone knows they were invaded and the future of the country fucked up 3 days later.
I'll admit I'm surprised that it didn't have more effect on the polls than what I expected. I figured Trump's numbers would go through the floor, but that didn't happen.
His supporters are clearly ride or die with him at this point. It's really a question as to how close it is on Election Day that the 2 am ballot dump will push it over to Harris.
It's what happened with Hillary all over again.
A candidate so unwholesome and unlikable that a philandering used-car-salesman type like Trump seems to be the soul of decency.
The rookie Trump--even with a significant portion of his own party against him--strategically and tactically outplayed the veteran--her, the master politician and "most qualified person to ever run for the office" [Obama said that]?!
And he is perhaps the most vilified person (and not without cause) ever to run for the office and before the election Mr. Obama had campaigned more for Democrat Hillary Clinton than any modern sitting president had for his party’s nominee.
And she still couldn't muster the win?
While Obama could not legally seek a third term, his hand-picked proxy Hillary Clinton, about whom he proclaimed "I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman, not me, not Bill, nobody more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America." dropped the election to a problem-riddled political rookie who was denounced by many in his own party!
Obama campaigned extensively for Hillary, and she outspent Trump by about 4:1. And she *still* lost to Trump, losing 5 states that Obama had carried twice.
At least with Cankles, you knew where she stood. She had over 20 years in the national spotlight as arguably the most powerful person in the Democratic party. You knew what you were getting with her, policy-wise.
Kackles, on the other hand, can't even manage that, except what she cribs from other people, and even then it's as bland as possible. And she's definitely not helping herself by refusing to give her press detail any love whatsoever.
I should modify this--we know what Harris stands for, because she's gone on record with it up until July 2024. She just won't talk about it currently.
IME, Tesla turned lots of people into used-car-salesmen types.

This is an absolutely insane video.
A Springfield, Ohio homeless advocate tells the city council that landlords are kicking people out of their homes and replacing them with Haitians and that the Biden-Harris government is paying them to do it.
He says he personally knows someone who lived in a house for seven years. The landlord told them to leave under the guise of completing renovations only to replace them with a Haitian and charge the government triple the rent.
"I don't know of a single homeless Haitian in this town because they all got vouchers! But I can show you a whole bunch of people that have been displaced."

Just investments in the great Food Truck Enlightenment.
The CEO bragging about the 30 workers he got as the city pays for 15k others shipped to Springfield was amazing.
No way a town of 60K has 20K job openings. If that plant manager really wanted another 30 workers, they are available if they're so goddamm great.
Hatians are absolute fucking ferals, too. Dominicans share the same small island with them and won't even let them in the country. But we got to keep that Third World-to-First World pipeline running.
Any Republican that isn't talking about repealing Hart-Cellar really doesn't understand the problem.
Dominicans share a long history with Haitians. Ask a typical one how he feels about Haitians. Keep in mind that Dominican independence is not considered to be from the Spanish, but from Haiti. They rebelled against cruel Haitian rule February 27, 1844 and celebrate that as their independence day.

We’ve got people getting evicted because their three jobs won’t pay for rent and food thanks to the four punch housing crisis/carbon tax/covid inflation/interest rate whammy; so a bunch of local businesses got together with Habitat for Humanity to build 15 houses. A drop in the bucket but it’s a start.
Who did Habitat for Humanity give them to? Incoming migrants.
Trudeau is getting another 1.5 million migrants this year. Our hospitals can’t handle the population we already have, there’s no housing for them, the schools are already full, the current sanitation infrastructure can’t handle the population growth.
Canada is built on immigrants but one in five residents arrived since Trudeau seized power. One in four residents weren’t born here. Meanwhile they have made it impossible through new environmental regulations to build housing developments or roads.
This is the deliberately engineered destruction of a country.
The chaos is deliberate because these idiots all think that if they turn society on its head, that it will allow communism to be established.
After Donald Trump brought up the situation in Springfield during Tuesday night’s debate, the mainstream media has worked overtime to try and make it look like absolutely nothing is wrong there. This could not be further from the truth, as Springfield residents have indeed been sharing tons of grievances about the influx of the 20,000 migrants from Haiti.
DeWine has announced that he is sending in state troopers to deal with the reckless driving problems that have come about in the wake of the migrants’ arrivals. He is also sending Springfield $2.5 million to deal with health care. In the city, wait times for health care have increased dramatically in recent weeks.
From Daily Wire:
“I want the people of Springfield and Clark County to know that as we move forward, we will continue to do everything we can to help the community deal with this surge of migrants,” DeWine said. “The federal government has not demonstrated that they have any kind of plan to deal with the issue. We will not walk away.”
“The influx of Haitians to Springfield and Clark County has significantly impacted local primary care providers due to the increased number of patients and the need for more translation services,” a press release from the governor’s office said. “In general, migrants from Haiti have had little to no healthcare services prior to arriving in the United States, including vaccinations.”

Harris has repeatedly bragged about programs like this one. She continues to stand by it despite the fact that it was shut down in June after massive fraud was found. It was revealed that 3,000 sponsors in the program had filed more than 100,000 forms. It also came to light that some of the sponsors were using phone numbers that belonged to dead people. On top of that, they were reportedly using addresses of storage units and fake zip codes.
Even after this fraud was discovered, the Biden-Harris administration quietly resumed the program less than six weeks later. Why they are in such a rush to keep these migrants stateside is anyone’s guess.
I have a few theories…

There were two astronauts on that spacewalk, though Isaacman was by himself for a few minutes. Let’s not forget Sarah Gillis.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: My Gaza ceasefire vote speeded up my NHS care, says MP Jess Phillips

Describing a distressing episode when she was having trouble breathing – 'my lips had gone blue and I couldn't breathe,' she recalled – Phillips, 42, explained that she'd sought urgent treatment at A&E in a Birmingham hospital.
She was greeted by scenes of appalling overcrowding. 'I have genuinely seen better facilities, health facilities, in war zones, in developing countries around the world,' the minister continued. Nevertheless, eventually she got to the front of the queue.
...But this, she said, was 'undoubtedly' for two reasons only. 'I got through because of who I am. Also the doctor who saw me was Palestinian, as it turns out. Almost all the doctors in Birmingham seemed to be.'
While in opposition, Phillips resigned from Labour's front bench to vote in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza five weeks after Hamas terrorists killed 1,200 Israelis – many of whom were mutilated or raped – and took another 120 hostage.
Her vote, she said, was the other reason that she received preferential treatment.
'He was sort of like, "I like you. You voted for a ceasefire". [Because of that] I got through quicker.'

Yet the silence of members of the scientific establishment about even the possibility of a laboratory leak in Wuhan is deafening. They refuse to debate it – quite literally. The World Health Organisation studiously avoids talking about it. I tried to get the Royal Society to organise a debate: it’s not a suitable topic for discussion, it replied. I tried the Academy of Medical Sciences, of which I am a fellow: too controversial, it said. A former president of the Royal Society told me he hopes we never find out what happened, lest it annoy the Chinese. Would he have said the same about Bhopal, I wondered, or a plane crash?
I was recently invited by one of the editors of a prestigious scientific journal to write a scholarly paper setting out the case that it was a lab leak. I agreed. With Professor Anton van der Merwe of Oxford University, I detailed how it is no coincidence that this virus turned up in exactly the right city at exactly the right time as they were planning exactly the right experiments that would put exactly the right insertion into exactly the right place in exactly the right gene of exactly the right kind of virus. And to do so at exactly the wrong biosafety level.
Our paper had hundreds of references to back up our claim, yet the editors of the journal rejected it out of hand, claiming – entirely wrongly – that ‘there is no evidence of gain-of-function experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology’ (WIV). In fact, that institute has published papers since 2017 detailing their gain-of-function experiments on SARS-like viruses. Were the editors of the journal unaware of this?
Why is this topic taboo? Scientists in the West have become addicted to collaboration with China. They get students and money from China. Ten British universities rely on Chinese students for more than a quarter of their income. Scientific journals get rich on Chinese publication fees. Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet and recipient of a Friendship Award from the Chinese government, went on Chinese television early in the pandemic to say: ‘I think we have a great deal to thank China for, about the way that it handled the outbreak.’
I did not start out thinking Covid came from a lab. For the first few months of 2020, I went around telling colleagues in the UK parliament we could rule that out (I retired from the House of Lords in 2021). Why? Mainly because I read the paper in March 2020 called ‘The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2’ in the journal, Nature Medicine, which dismissed a lab leak. And I assumed that its authors knew what they were talking about.
Only later did I discover that I had been deceived: not only did their arguments fall apart on closer inspection but also they did not believe them themselves. We now know from congressional inquiries what the five virologists who authored the ‘proximal origin’ paper were saying to each other in private, while they drafted a paper that ruled out a lab leak. All five thought a lab leak was possible if not likely. One called it ‘friggin’ likely’, another ‘not crackpot’ and a third said ‘I literally swivel day by day thinking it is a lab escape or natural’.
They went on saying things like this even after the paper was published – so it’s not that they changed their minds in the light of new evidence (as they have since claimed). A whole month after publication, lead author Kristian Andersen wrote in a private message that, ‘I’m still not fully convinced that no cell culture was involved’ and ‘we also can’t fully rule out engineering’. Writing a scientific paper that says the opposite of what you think is the truth is scientific misconduct at the very least. The paper should be retracted.
Why did they do this? They made that clear too: it was political. Co-author Andrew Rambaut wrote privately: ‘Given the shit show that would happen if anyone serious accused the Chinese of even accidental release’, they dare not do so. Andersen agreed, saying it was impossible not to ‘inject’ politics into science.

Professor shreds 'bizarre' attacks on Kamala Harris calling herself 'daughter of Oakland'

"All politicians, Harris included, are aware that the question of where they’re from is more about identity, or at least the identity we want to project, than geography," noted Autry. "Home isn’t just a matter of where we say we’re from, it’s also about where others decide it makes the most sense for us to be from."
Oakland, said Autry, "reminds us of the underdog Harris says she is."
What wonders what the author thinks are the defining characteristics of Oakland that Kamala wants to co-opt.
I only ask since the first thing that jumps into my mind certainly isn’t ‘underdog’.

In Gilbert and Sullivan's Princess Ida (1884), the Princess comments that "The narrow-minded pedant still believes/That two and two make four! Why, we can prove,/We women—household drudges as we are –/That two and two make five—or three—or seven;/Or five-and-twenty, if the case demands!"
In Notes from Underground (1864), by Feodor Dostoevsky, the anonymous protagonist accepts the falsehood of "two plus two equals five", and considers the implications (ontological and epistemological) of rejecting the truth of "two times two makes four", and proposed that the intellectualism of free will—Man's inherent capability to choose or to reject logic and illogic—is the cognitive ability that makes humanity human: "I admit that twice two makes four is an excellent thing, but, if we are to give everything its due, twice two makes five is sometimes a very charming thing, too."
In Orwell's 1984, it appears as a possible statement of Ingsoc (English Socialism) philosophy. The Party (i.e. a political party) slogan "War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength", is a dogma which the Party expects the citizens of Oceania to believe is true. In writing his secret diary in the year 1984, the protagonist Winston Smith ponders if the Inner Party might declare that "two plus two equals five" is a fact. Smith further ponders whether or not belief in such a consensus reality makes the lie true.[19] About the falsity of "two plus two equals five", in the Ministry of Love, the interrogator O'Brien tells the thought criminal Smith that control over physical reality is unimportant to the Party, provided the citizens of Oceania subordinate their real-world perceptions to the political will of the Party; and that, by way of doublethink: "Sometimes, Winston. [Sometimes it is four fingers.] Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once"
In the political novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), concerning the Party's philosophy of government for Oceania, Orwell said:
In the end, the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable—what then?
Four Lights Present
In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Chain of Command, Part II,” Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) is subjected to intense psychological torture by Gul Madred, a Cardassian officer. As part of the torture, Madred shines four bright lights in Picard’s eyes and demands that he acknowledge there are five lights. This scene has become one of the most memorable and powerful moments in the series.
The Significance of the Four Lights
The four lights serve as a metaphor for the struggle between truth and deception. Madred’s goal is to break Picard’s will by making him conform to his false reality, whereas Picard refuses to compromise his integrity by acknowledging the non-existent fifth light. The scene highlights the importance of standing firm against coercion and the dangers of accepting false information.
A Testament to Human Resilience
Picard’s defiance in the face of extreme physical and psychological pain is a testament to human resilience and the power of the human spirit. His repeated declaration, “There are four lights!” becomes a symbol of his unwavering commitment to truth and his refusal to surrender to his tormentor.
Four lights, or five; it does not matter.
But men becoming women, on that it matters, and matters more than anything else.
The job will not be done until all confirm the reality is a crutch.
Mrs. Oblongata and I were sitting watching TV and I got up to get something from the kitchen. She asked me to check to see if some electronic widget she had plugged in on the desk there was done charging. As I walked over to the widget to check, I asked "How will I know if it's done charging?"
She said "How many lights do you see?"
I turned and in my best Picard imitation shouted "There...are...four...lights!"
I'm blessed: she got the reference and laughed. I cannot say how satisfying the perfect setup was and that I recognized it in time for it to work!

Hacking blind spot: States struggle to vet coders of election software
In New Hampshire, a cybersecurity firm found troubling security bugs — and the Ukrainian national anthem — written into a voter database built with the help of an overseas subcontractor.
https://www.politico.com/news/2024/09/01/us-election-software-national-security-threats-00176615
…But last fall, as the new company, WSD Digital, raced to complete the project, New Hampshire officials made an unsettling discovery: The firm had offshored part of the work. That meant unknown coders outside the U.S. had access to the software that would determine which New Hampshirites would be welcome at the polls this November.
The revelation prompted the state to take a precaution that is rare among election officials: It hired a forensic firm to scour the technology for signs that hackers had hidden malware deep inside the coding supply chain.
The probe unearthed some unwelcome surprises: software misconfigured to connect to servers in Russia and the use of open-source code — which is freely available online — overseen by a Russian computer engineer convicted of manslaughter, according to a person familiar with the examination and granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about it.

Widespread problems with U.S. mail system could disrupt voting, election officials warn
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/widespread-problems-with-u-s-mail-system-could-disrupt-voting-election-officials-warn
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — State and local election officials from across the country on Wednesday warned that problems with the nation’s mail delivery system threaten to disenfranchise voters in the upcoming presidential election, telling the head of the U.S. Postal Service that it hasn’t fixed persistent deficiencies.
In an alarming letter, the officials said that over the past year, including the just-concluded primary season, mailed ballots that were postmarked on time were received by local election offices days after the deadline to be counted. They also noted that properly addressed election mail was being returned to them as undeliverable, a problem that could automatically send voters to inactive status through no fault of their own, potentially creating chaos when those voters show up to cast a ballot.
The officials also said that repeated outreach to the Postal Service to resolve the issues had failed and that the widespread nature of the problems made it clear these were “not one-off mistakes or a problem with specific facilities. Instead, it demonstrates a pervasive lack of understanding and enforcement of USPS policies among its employees.”
I still contend that since USPS carriers are largely members of NLCA (AFL-CIO), which has a known political bias, it is next to impossible to police their handling of ballots. 'Losing' ballots picked up from mailboxes of houses with the opponent's signs in the yard is trivially easy.
They wouldn't even need yard signs to do it. If you are collecting mail-in ballots from an area that normally votes overwhelming for Trump or other Republicans, you can "accidentally" lose the ballots. Sure you might be discarding a few Kamala votes, but it's worth it if you are losing 2-4 Trump votes to each Kamala vote.
I think it is Wisconsin where the democrats sued to try to force election officials to use machines.
Anyone with half a brain should be able to see the problem with voting machines. I haven't met a single programmer that thinks that's a good idea.
You can have open source code to make the process transparent, but then everyone knows the security vulnerabilities.
You can make it a black box, but that isn't transparent and you would have the trust the goodwill of whomever built the machine.
Both are foolish.
You also have to be able to trust the integrity of the election official. Basically, these machines are stand-alone units; you're not supposed to be able to connect them to the internet. The data gets collected on election day, it's downloaded onto a thumb drive, and then the results are transferred to the reporting program to calculate the final results (disclosure: a county clerk that I've known for 25 years explained the process to me).
Now, the question becomes, is that data just downloaded to the program and then uploaded to the state? Well, ideally, that's how it would go. Can that data be fucked with? Depends on if the clerk can change the results or not. If they can, then that means an independent audit using digital forensics should be done every single election to ensure integrity. That costs money; would people be willing to pay it? And even then, we know the Dems would go whole hog trying to stonewall any such thing, look how they react to simple voter ID laws.
They’re not connected to the internet, that means they’re hack proof!!!1!1!1!!
Some people actually believe that's true despite the fact that U.S. intelligence agencies have already proven that isn't true.
If they can get to air gapped systems, and they have definitely done that in the past, they can get into anything.
U.S. intelligence agencies aren't the only agencies who have proven they can do that, either. This doesn't even begin to address all the independent hackers that clearly understand how it works as well. It's just as likely to be some hacktivist group doing it for the lolz as a Chinese or Russian operation.
It’s just as likely to be some hacktivist group doing it for the lolz as a Chinese or Russian operation.
And once again [drink] this is all predicated on the notion that anyone gives a shit rather than saying for 50 yrs. that we can't use IDs to vote because black people are too stupid to know where their DMV is and then turn around and say "We have to mail out ballots because we can't get within 6 ft. of each other. And if the law says we can't, then we have to change that. And if the law says we can't change it then we'll just have to do it anyway."... [drink]
Personally, I'm having trouble with the cybersecurity firm that went past "open-source code" and "connect to servers".

Still bad. Doesn't discuss race or gender.

GPT is still ending a sentence with a preposition.
"Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put."
--Winston Churchill
ChatGPT:
Yes, the sentence does end with a preposition: "with." However, ending sentences with prepositions is generally acceptable in modern English, especially if restructuring the sentence to avoid the preposition sounds awkward or overly formal. In your sentence, ending with "with" feels natural and clear.
If you wanted to avoid the preposition at the end, you could rewrite it as: "...better than any human editor with whom I’ve worked."
However, the original version sounds more conversational and is perfectly fine.
I just wanted an excuse to post the Churchill quote.
I believe that not ending a sentence with a preposition, not using no double negatives and other annoying grammar and spelling rules originated by applying Latin rules to English. Those were both common in English in the past.
I picked this up on the History of English Podcast which is really good (especially the proto-indoeuropean through middle English episodes) for mega-nerds. https://historyofenglishpodcast.com/
Anyway, language isn’t math and it’s always changing. If it sounds OK, it is OK.

Sweden rape: Most convicted attackers foreign-born, says TV

Making matters worse, police sources say, word has gotten out in the shelters about the city’s lax bail guidelines — meaning migrants know they’re going to get kicked back onto the street quickly after they’re nabbed.
I'm just surprised that it's 58% and not 90%.
They aren't counting second-generation immigrants.
Once again, if you take a rape victim anywhere in the country and tell her to point in the direction of where her rape occurred, if you walk a straight line from where she stands to where the rape occurred, unless she was raped in an international airport and you took her to an international airport, the overwhelming majority of the time the overwhelming majority of people you run into along the path are going to be born in that country.

Professor: If You Read To Your Kids, You’re ‘Unfairly Disadvantaging’ Others

“I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,” he said.
But Swift also added that some other things parents do to give their kids the best education possible — like sending them to “an elite private school” — “cannot be justified” in this way.
“Private schooling cannot be justified by appeal to these familial relationship goods,” he said.
“I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,” he said.
"In any event, parents who do not read their children bedtime stories should never have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging their own children."
It's a useful trick to examine such claims from another point of view to determine if it's a valid or nonsense idea, and I appreciate that you're familiar with this technique.
This is one way 'professors' are able to show what they really think about poor people and minorities. They honestly don't think they have any agency and are in no way responsible for anything. They can't be, as they are poor and/or a minority group which definitionally means they are not human as most people would understand it.
Rather it's themselves and their ilk who are responsible for everything, and by their own admission they think they've done an absolutely shit job. One thing they are sure of, though, is that letting those people make their own decisions and be responsible for their own actions is a bridge too far. They just have to do better at ruling.
While I'd admit it's reading too far between the lines, one might assume they would be quite happy with a beneficent dictator.

Did Daughter of Judge in Trump Hush-Money Case Work for Harris, Biden Campaigns?
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/daughter-of-judge-trump-case-biden-harris-work/
On April 4, 2023, former U.S. President Donald Trump was arraigned on 34 felony charges related to the falsification of business records surrounding a hush-money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. The case was assigned to New York County Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, in whose presence Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Judge Juan Merchan's daughter, Loren Merchan, was the director of digital persuasion for Kamala Harris' 2020 presidential campaign. His daughter has also worked, indirectly, for the Biden-Harris 2020 campaign through a communications firm that provides services for progressive campaigns.
Sounds like both Merchans should be facing election interference charges.

Google Executive Tells OMG Journalist That The Search Engine Is “Coordinating” With Harris Campaign
https://wsau.com/2024/09/12/google-executive-tells-omg-journalist-that-the-search-engaging-is-coordinating-with-harris-campaign/
“Google was essentially promoting through its ads rhetoric that was very pro-Kamala,” Leazer stated in the video and continued by saying, “The advertisements seemed to link out to legitimate news publication sites. So, it seemed like it was an ad from PBS, but it was really an ad for the Kamala campaign.”
Leazer also spoke about how the company uses their algorithm to decide which side of the aisle is likely to be more “fearful” which helps the company earn extra revenue saying, “I think Google has a belief that one side will allow them to make more money. I think whatever demographic is most fearful is going to be the most profitable.”
Purely anecdotal, but I have noticed that while I am watching Youtube and an ad shows up, if it is a Harris one I almost never get the option to skip it after a few seconds, but whenever it was a Trump one I could do it every time.
It may have something to do with what type of ad it was (or if they paid more to have their ads be unskippable), but it occurred enough that I noticed it happening pretty consistently.
I don't know if this still works, but previously it worked for me. When you load a video on the YT app, drag the progress curser to the end of the video. Then hit replay video. For about two years this worked to prevent any mid-video ads. I'd often get them when I first load the video, but doing this technique was an almost fool-proof way to preclude any ads in the middle of the video I was watching.

The dancing nurses videos - just spontaneously "spreading joy"..?
https://sanityunleashed.substack.com/p/the-dancing-nurses-videos-just-spontaneously
I am sure most people who used any form of social media during 2020 and 2021 will be aware of the plethora of videos of dancing nurses, doctors and other hospital workers which proliferated during the “pandemic”.
This is just a brief article to lay out a few thoughts and questions I have around these.
This thread on X contains links to a number of these and I suggest you watch at least a few of them to place the questions I have into some sort of context.
The author of that thread proposes that the purpose of the videos was to nudge the population psychologically, and maintain unity and morale, reminiscent of the role of communal dancing in communist countries.
I find that explanation lacking.
For one thing, it assumes that all the videos are real. While I am sure some are, many of them are extremely sophisticated, involving troupes of nurses (and in some cases doctors and other healthcare workers) quite expertly dancing in rhythm, sometimes in usually busy and public parts of their workplaces, some with aerial footage. In many cases, expensive pieces of equipment (eg MRI scanners) are commandeered and used as props.
Working on the assumption that they are real, I would like to know:
Has anyone ever seen any discussions of how the videos came about? Who suggested them, and in what forums? Was management involved?
Who will have sanctioned the time off work to both rehearse and film the event, and the use of the public space for filming?
Who will have authorised the employment of a film crew and editors, and possibly a choreographer?
Why was the need for “social distancing” jettisoned in order to make these videos?
Where are the minutes from any of the meetings at which any of the above issues were debated and resolved?
Why has nobody who ever performed in these videos ever spoken about them?
Whew. Good thing the sock was upfront about his perusals of Xitter. That spared me the effort of reading umpteen lines of what could only be Mystical Muskovite gibberish.
Yeah. Normally we have to see that the author is bringing up the 1972 LP platform, girl bulliers, or Comstock laws to know not to read the post.
"Why has nobody who ever performed in these videos ever spoken about them?"
Hopefully they haven't talked about it because they realized what a terrible idea it was to dance around grinning like idiots while at the same time crying about being understaffed and overworked because of a pandemic.
I find them fake due to the lack of fat nurses.
I wonder who would want to waste their time wondering about these dumb, one-off videos no one else remembers or cares about.

Putin draws new red line on long-range missiles
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crrlr87e5elo
The headline in this morning’s Kommersant newspaper captured the drama.
“Vladimir Putin draws his red line.”
Will the West cross it? And, if it does, how will Russia respond?
Speaking in St Petersburg, President Putin sent a clear warning to the West: don’t allow Ukraine to use your long-range missiles to strike Russian territory.
Moscow, he said, would view that as the “direct participation” of Nato countries in the war in Ukraine.
“It would substantially change the very essence, the nature of the conflict,” the Kremlin leader continued.
“This will mean that Nato countries, the USA and European states, are fighting with Russia.”
He claimed that, for missile launches into Russia, Ukraine would require data from Western satellites and that only servicemen from Nato member states would be able to “input flight missions into these missile systems”.
Red lines don't really mean shit in 21st century warfare. Obama did that, and the people he was sending that message to laughed in his face, did what they felt like doing, and nothing of consequence happened.
Putin can draw all the red lines he wants, but if he doesn't follow through when it's inevitably crossed, he's just a bitch.

Colonel Klink (ret) (96f56a) — 9/12/2024@9:34 pm
It never ceases to amaze me that, after 10 years, the neocons remain eternally obtuse to why Trump ended up becoming the GOP standard-bearer. Inevitably, they end up projecting their own neuroses, such as their fascination with celebrity and longtime genuflection to businessmen as sages who knew more about “the real world” than government bureaucrats.
They still, to this day, don’t get that Trump’s appeal had very little to do with his celebrity status. It was a nice bonus and makes for a fun spectacle, but everyone knows that Trump’s been talking about entering politics for decades. His appeal lay directly in the fact that he not only talked about issues that GOP voters actually cared about, he made it very clear that he wasn’t interested in giving the Democrats half of what they wanted now and the other half later on when it came to those issues–primarily, immigration and the voters’ long-standing frustration with the fact that their leaders had no interest in limiting it. Most importantly, he showed right from the start that he viewed politics the same way the Democrats did, as a street fight, and that he was actually willing to battle them on those terms.
It’s a lot easier for the neocons to simply call these people “dumb” than exercise even a bit of self-reflection or humility as to their own political failures. If they’re as stupid as the neocons claim, why weren’t the neocons smart enough themselves to find a candidate that could lie convincingly that they represented GOP voter interests and would fight for them? Why was a political faction that treats the Chamber of Commerce as a modern priestly class and Big Business as the one true faith, more effective at treating politics like a business and running an effective marketing campaign? Could it be that GOP voters finally realized that the products the neocons were selling were consistently failing to deliver on what the marketing claimed, to the point of false advertising?
No amount of appeals to patriotism and low taxes are going to overcome years of failure to actually fight for the principles you claim to stand for. If Ford and GM are promising reliable vehicles and then producing clunkers that have to constantly go in for repairs, should they be shocked if their customers start migrating to Hondas, Mazdas, and Toyotas, irrespective of appeals to emotion like “buy American”? Wagging your finger and telling potential customers “your dishonor will remain” because they no longer want and F-150 and decide to get a CX-5 instead isn’t going to get that customer back. But these prigs always did confuse pompous moralizing with virtue and seriousness.
Seems pretty straightforward to me that “Colonel Klink” prefers to see more of himself in his representation and thus prefers Captain John McCain, 2nd Lieutenant Bob Dole, or Captain Jonas Grumby because, obviously, some Thurston Howell III or Corporal Peter Newkirk-type character is only going to muck things up.
OK Suderman. Here's a real question someone asked me under a Utube math vid. Your AI will love it. "Can you please prove this formula: φ^n = φ * F(n-1) + F(n-2)" This phi is the result of adding 1 to the square root of five, then halving the sum. Engineers use the result for approximating miles/km conversions because its reciprocal is the same as subtracting 1 from it. The questioner, a musician, added that he got as far as: φ^n = φ^(n-2) * φ^2 = φ^(n-2) * (φ + 1) = φ^(n-1) + φ^(n-2)
No, no they don’t, because 1 + sqrt 5 /2 is nowhere close to the conversion of km to miles. That’s less accurate and infinitely more complicated than just multiplying by 1.6. If you don’t want an approximation, Just use 1.60934
Knowing that a 10km race is just a bit more than 6.2 miles, I tend to just divide by 10 then multiply by 6, so that 80km ~= 6*8 = 48 miles (google says 49.7097). It's a decent approximation, especially if you know that it's always going to be a little bit more (since 6 < 6.2), or if you add 1km to the result for every 50km.
5 stars for Suderman. It is probably the assignment from hell (sorry, Peter), but he does Reason Roundup far better than the current incumbent.
Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.
Are you high?
Found Peters sock account.
As with many, if not most, commentators, Suderman doesn't understand that inflation is the rate of change of prices (x % per year), not the price level itself. If inflation were zero, the general price level would remain unchanged.

Op-Ed: Trump Brazenly Lied, Claiming That Kamala Supports — Oh Wait It’s True? Here’s Why It’s Essential For Democracy
My fellow citizens — it's time to address the existential threats to our Holy Democracy under the leadership of Our Dear Leader Joseph Biden, and Our Dear Comrade Kamala Harris.
I refer, of course, to the completely absurd, ludicrous, lying, flatulent, philandering, misleading, conspiratorial, and anti-Democratic claims that the BAD ORANGE MAN made during this week's debate, like claiming that Kamala Harris wants to give free transgender surgeries to undocumented migrants.
Can you believe he would say such a thing?
This is a disgracefully absurd lie, completely backward and wrong — nay, even malicious and evil — and it has been consistently debunked and disproved by independent fact checkers.
Wait, hold on...
She really does support giving free transgender surgeries to undocumented migrants?
Of course, she does. Because unlike Trump, she actually has a heart. And according to experts, free transgender surgeries for undocumented migrants are actually essential to a healthy and functioning Democracy.
This isn't a small issue: it touches upon the very essence of our Democracy and freedom. Kamala Harris has eloquently and bravely defended our inalienable rights to provide undocumented immigrants with free transgender surgery, because of course she has. KAMALA HARRIS IS A BULWARK AND GUARDIAN OF OUR SACRED DEMOCRACY AND WE DARE NOT TRUST EVIL BAD PEOPLE LIKE DRUMPF WHO WOULD TAKE AWAY THE FREEDOMS KAMALA GIVES US.
Do not be deceived, my dear fellow citizens: Trump is a liar, maybe even the father of all lies. He's definitely at least the father of a liar. But Kamala is sweet and innocent and a woman of the people. Her word is truth, unlike the ludicrous idiocies of that idiot Trumpy-idiot.
And that's why I'm voting for Kamala.
“Inflation cooled over the summer. But that doesn't mean prices are down. A Fox Business analysis finds that prices are up more than 20 percent since August 2020.”
I guess a slower increase is cooling, from a certain point of view.
When you pay for 3# of ground beef the same price you paid four years ago for a Thanksgiving turkey, all bets are off.
This is just the beginning.
When you start from a point 20% higher than before and cool 7% inflation to 3% claiming its cooling and much better is disingenuous at best. I know what I paid for hamburger, chicken, flour, bread, lettuce etc under Trump because I don't have an EBT freebie card. It is much worse now.
I wonder why we can not have a mild deflationary policy.
also I totally forgot KH was once Montel Jordan's chick too.
My search results said Montel Williams.
As an English major, you should know better than to begin a sentence with that phrase when it does not otherwise mention anything that could be an English major. ‘For’ would be better than ‘As’ in this case.
Now youse listen up here, it ain't no difference whus he uses to be stratin his sennece an shit. Longs he ges his poin across. Nome sayin.
Corruption and influence peddling at NYPD??!! I'm shocked....shocked I tell you!
Mayor Adams has told us he has all the confidence in the NYPD for its courage, pursuit of excellence and devotion to protecting the good people of N.Y. City.
I'm sure Alvin Bragg and Leticia James are also looking into this....oh wait, they're busily drumming up some more charges against DJT.
More than 1000 New Yorkers were murdered while those two were busy charging Trump for the non crime of buying silence.
Wasn't Adams a big wig at the NYPD and used that to get elected in the first place?
I don't know about him being a big wig but I read he was so bad as a patrol officer, they created a special race relations office just to get him off the streets.
Probably made life hell for all those Bodegas
He was so bad, they got him out of the NYPD into some harmless political job.
