Joe Biden

Why Didn't the Media Notice Joe Biden's 'Jet Lag' Sooner?

So much for those "cheap fake" videos.

Addressing questions from reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre once again attributed President Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance to jet lag following travel and a cold.

"He had a schedule that was rigorous, the travel he had to do, going from Italy all the way to the west coast," said Jean-Pierre. "I think, that can have a toll on anyone, whether you're 20 or 80."

Most people don't get to travel in as much relative comfort as the president of the United States—there's a bed on Air Force One, after all—but yes, it's true that travel can be exhausting. To be clear, however, the debate took place a full 12 days after Biden had returned from his trip. Moreover, the fact that the President of the United States is such a demanding job is precisely why voters are so worried about Biden's advanced age.

The reporters in the room, to their credit, were unimpressed by Jean-Pierre's attempt to spin the situation and pressed her to address the public's mounting concerns about Biden's fitness for office. Several elected Democrats and prominent spokespersons for the party, including Julián Castro and Tim Ryan, have called on Biden to drop out. The Atlantic, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, and several of its columnists think he should exit the race. And most importantly, support for Biden is cratering: 74 percent of overall voters now say he is too old to be president, and former President Donald Trump has widened his lead substantially. Vice President Kamala Harris now polls two points better against Trump than Biden does, though Trump is still ahead of her.

But why did it take so long for the mainstream media to pursue this line of inquiry, even as evidence of Biden's cognitive decline became increasingly obvious? Well before the debate, the American people have consistently expressed a high degree of concern about the president's ability to serve a second term. Polls dating back to February found that a majority of Democrats and three-quarters of overall voters had serious qualms.

The White House treated this as a non-issue. Team Biden lashed out at anyone who managed to inspire doubts about Biden's fitness, including special counsel Robert Hur, whose description of Biden as an "elderly man with a poor memory" caused apoplexy among the president's defenders. Jean-Pierre repeatedly claimed that uncomfortable videos of Biden wandering off awkwardly were misleading but "manipulated." While the phrase "cheap fake" became the go-to term for the videos in question, Jean-Pierre went much further—she said they were "deep fakes," i.e. that they were significantly altered on a digital level.

"And instead of talking about the President's performance in office—and what I mean by that is his legislative wins, what he's been able to do for the American people across the country—we're seeing these deep fakes, these manipulated videos," she said on June 17. "And it is, again, done in bad faith."

The bad-faith actor here was Jean-Pierre, though given her role, maybe that's to be expected. The bigger question is why the mainstream media fell for the spin—and aided it.

Seeing Is Believing?

Multiple mainstream news organizations wholly adopted the White House's talking points with respect to cheap fakes. The Washington Post reported that Republicans were weaponizing "deceptively edited videos" of Biden. The Poynter Institute said the same. So did the Associated Press, CNN, and of course, The New York Times. It was Republicans pounce, and then some.

Former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson suspects that the media's collective loathing of Trump caused the White House press corps to shirk its duty in this regard.

"I do think if enough reporters had pushed, the story was reportable," she told Semafor. "I worry that too many journalists didn't try to get the story because they did not want to be accused of helping elect Donald Trump."

If that's the motivation—or even subtle bias affecting the reporting—it's proven to be tremendously counterproductive, even from the standpoint of helping Biden. The American people learned very suddenly, all at once, that the president is compromised by his age. At this point, there are questions about whether Biden should be the president right now, let alone whether he could possibly serve another four years.

Undoubtedly, the White House wanted to keep this fact under wraps until Biden was safely over the finish line in November. But media organizations that participated, even unwittingly, in this farce have not only made a subsequent Democratic administration far less likely—they have profoundly undermined their own integrity.

Yeah, anyone who said there wasn't anything wrong with Biden prior to that debate was absolutely lying their ass off. Reporters have admitted they didn't want to give credence to what their political enemies were pointing out plain as day, so they just denied or simply refused to comment on it.

It's a great reminder of why these people are the enemies of the US, and need to be attacked with the maximum amount of venom available. A "liberal democracy" that allows the press to blatantly serve as the PR team for Democrats is elegant proof that such a system needs to be destroyed.

Normally, yes, but if the only alternative is a corrupt, impulsive, pigheaded moron, then it doesn't seem so stupid to support a senile grandpa. Biden, in his senility, will probably just go along with what his advisors suggest. Trump will be terrible all on his own.

      1. Stuck in California   11 months ago

They've been damaging themselves since long before Trump. I recall an awful lot of "framing" and repeating talking points during Bush. Then Obama was treated like a messiah, they covered for his inability to speak off the cuff, for his extremely partisan and unpopular policy, blamed Republicans for literally everything.

Calling the damage TDS induced is like blaming the addiction on the recent rise of Fentanyl when the addict had been mainlining H for the last dozen years beforehand.

All of this finger pointing by the press is an amusing sideshow. But I've recently become a conspiracy realist so every time I see a shiny object I catch sight of a dark cloud in the corner of my eye. I don't have a plausible theory yet but I have a feeling this shitshow can only get worse.

Uh, they did notice. Everybody noticed. The f’ing world noticed. The media, however, are not in the business of reporting the news. They’re a party propaganda arm. And they now have been provided with a new narrative to "report."

It was obvious he had dementia in 2019 when he bit his wife’s fingers during a primary rally. Leftist idiots of course will parrot the party line about it being a sign of affection. This implies two things, the first that it is normal to bite your spouse’s phalanges while she is gesturing while giving a speech launching your candidacy for president, and the second is that those suffering from dementia are unable to show signs of affection. Both of these things are, of course, completely false.

    4. Ghatanathoah   11 months ago

I remember watching the first debate between Trump and Biden in 2020. At that point, it was clear that, of the two, Trump was the one in greater cognitive decline. He had no impulse control and just kept talking over Biden, like he didn't know what was going on. I thought Trump was bad on policy before that, but watching the 2020 debates convinced me that he was also mentally unfit for the job.

It's clear after watching the 2024 debate that Biden's decline has greatly accelerated. He not only caught up to Trump, he passed him. So now the choice is between two unfit people. Heaven help us.

It has been a consistent theme from Reason to claim Biden's only problem is that he's old. They have outright ignored that he is a corrupt life-long politician, an asshole (at least as bad as Trump,) an idiot on his best days, and most of all a senile dementia patient. That gender goblins like Erin Reed have this much influence over White House policy is why factions of the left don’t want Biden to go. Activists are running the show.

    Meanwhile, from the Denver Post:

'Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to appear on Colorado’s presidential ballot this November under an agreement struck with the state Libertarian Party, his campaign announced Wednesday.'

'The controversial candidate will replace the Libertarian Party’s national presidential nominee in the state under a resolution passed by the Colorado Libertarians’ board Tuesday night. Instead of Chase Oliver and running mate Mike ter Maat, whom state party leaders rejected last month, Colorado’s ballot will list Kennedy and his vice-presidential pick, wealthy Silicon Valley lawyer Nicole Shanahan.'

So, a Libertarian revolt, from the gay libertinian to the guy with the brain worm (deceased). Things get better and better.

    1. CE   11 months ago

So did the national LP disband the Colorado LP and open a new chapter? Why not? RFKJ had his chance at the LP convention, and got like 2% of the vote.

      1. R Mac (5-30-24, sarc’s too drunk to remember what he thinks about it)   11 months ago

Apparently there was some shaninigans at the convention with delegates and people are responding. There’s also a lawsuit against the party for it. Not sure what the exact status of the Colorado chapter is.

Luckily, Liz has decided to cover the LP so I look forward to her updated article after the holiday.

        1. ducksalad   11 months ago

There are some missing steps getting from “Maybe Oliver was not nominated properly” to “Therefore RJK Jr was the real winner, with 10th place and 2.1% of the vote”.

There, rewrote your headline in a more honest manner. You cannot make me believe that a one of you believed in the lies you peddled because if you did believe that with the evidence you saw (and suppressed) then you're too stupid to be allowed to live unsupervised. What makes you think the national media did not notice?

Better question: why is so much of the media a dedicated part of the DNC machine? And why did it take the public, especially the Good People so long to realize this?

Robby, like all Reason, is national media.
He's just spouting the prescribed line.

  24. CE   11 months ago

Because the great majority of the news media outlets are devout partisans, afraid to portray the candidate they back in a negative light. And when only a few outlets point out the truth (Fox News, the NY Post), it's easy to call them "fake news" or "misinformation" or even try to ban links to them on social media sites (as was done to the NY Post with the Hunter Biden laptop story.)

    1. VULGAR MADMAN   11 months ago

They managed to contain the laptop story until after the election, that’s not election interference though.

And while losing every penny raised by the Biden campaign in the process.

      1. Jefferson Paul   11 months ago

This is an old thread, but if anyone is still checking it...

The money raised for the Biden campaign wouldn't just disappear. It can't be transferred directly to a non-Kamala candidate, but it can be transferred to the DNC. It just means the DNC couldn't directly coordinate with the campaign on how they want it spent, but obviously there are ways around that.

While Democrats and their media lackeys are fond of claiming that prosecuting Mr. Trump proves nobody is above the law they avoid mentioning -- and hope that the rest of us will forget -- Special Counsel Robert Hur's obviously well-founded report that Mr. Biden is beneath the law, citing that as a reason for not prosecuting him.

When the history books come out in 20 years: "The news media's constant warnings about the diminished mental capacity of President Biden were ignored for years until a critical debate against Donald Trump. Had voters paid more attention to vociferous early media reports, Biden would have been replaced by a candidate who would have saved American democracy from an experiment with fascism."

“By today’s standards King George III was a very mild tyrant indeed. He taxed his American colonists at a rate of only pennies per annum. His actual impact on their personal lives was trivial. He had arbitrary power over them in law and in principle but in fact it was seldom exercised. If you compare his rule with that of today’s U.S. Government you have to wonder why we celebrate our independence..”

Westerners can't comprehend just how much sanctions on Russian oligarchs helped Putin. They facilitated the return of a massive amount of capital to Russia, something which Putin has been trying to acheive since he first took office.

All that repatriated capital has been converted into domestic economic stimulus, because the oligarchs have few other options but to invest their loot back into the Russian economy.

Just one of many examples of how sanctions actually helped graduate Russia to a high-income country.

But, Biden said he would turn the ruble into rubble!

  33. Ben of Houston   11 months ago

Look. I normally don't go for conspiracy theories, but there are several facts to consider.

1: Everyone has known that Biden has been in mental decline for years. This was known since 2016, when his every move has been carefully curated. It's been apparent for his entire presidency.
2: There has been a concerted effort by the media to pretend that Biden was fine and that all evidence to the contrary was fake.

I think we are well within our rights to call this a conspiracy.

3: This was the first time in a long time that he had to stand on his own, and it was an unmitigated disaster. A completely foreseeable unmitigated disaster.
4: Now, it's almost a complete shift from unilateral and unconditional support to widespread insistence that Biden must step down, with a paltry veneer of "we have been lied to by the White House", despite points 1 and 2.

This clearly looks like a conspiracy to remove Biden from the ballot and replace him with someone that is more palatable while completely avoiding the messy issues of holding a proper primary.

  35. Ghatanathoah   11 months ago

The question that is bothering me is, why did Biden perform so much better that Trump while in office? Is he one of those senile people who are mostly normal during the day and only get bad at night? Or are his advisors just good at getting him to make decent choices.

I remember the Trump years. Wokeness was out of control. So was crime. Woke mobs rampaged through the streets and burned down buildings. There was massive inflation. Trump cut taxes while also massively raising spending. Trump said he'd getter a better nuclear deal with Iran, instead he scrapped the existing deal and replaced it with jack squat. The border was swamped.

Biden did most of the things that Trump voters said they elected Trump to do. Wokeness is on the retreat, DEI officers are being massively laid off. People feel safe speaking out against wokeness and political correctness again. Crime is down. So is inflation. Biden has managed to support Ukraine and Israel without getting the USA pulled directly into their wars. The border isn't that much better, but he's at least reformed the asylum process a little.

Part of it isn't anything Biden directly did. Without Trump in office to scare people woke activists can't fundraise as much as they used to, so their power has waned. But it also seems like he's just a better president than Trump, even if you ignore liberal and progressive causes and focus purely on the causes Trump supporters care about. How did he manage that with such a steep decline? Is Trump just so inept that even a senile old man can outdo him?

    1. MasterThief   11 months ago

None of that made sense. You're bullshitting positive metrics for Biden while ignoring the awful policies he has implemented and the negative consequences of them. The only reason "wokeness" is in decline culturally is because it has been pushed so far. The government hasn't slowed down its pace on woke DEI bullshit, but it has gotten a bit quieter about implementing it.
You're playing the same game Matt Welch and the other idiots do of hyperfocusing on some very minor recent improvements in stats while ignoring how badly they were driven by the current administration. Inflation is way up compared to Trump even if it has fallen from the double digit rates Biden and democrats drive it to. Crime is up but the statistics look better because municipalities refuse to report it. The border is an absolute disaster and this administration is actively encouraging illegal immigration rather than enforcing laws. Left-wing protests aren't as prominent or destructive right now because they are in power. It's the same bullshit pause we saw with Obama. If Trump had done the same shit with Ukraine and Israel then we would see a bunch of code pink activists back in action.

Why Didn’t the Media Notice Joe Biden’s ‘Jet Lag’ Sooner?

Because they were busy running cover for and distracting from the entire administration and/or deep state’s other corruption.

The way Reason and others shifted the Hunter Biden story from why he wasn’t charged for the tax evasion and FARA charges to the how/why of how he got convicted on the 4473 violation.

Same thing here; Biden has clearly been incompetent for quite some time. Not just has the media missed this. Biden has almost certainly been in multiple situations where the 25A was more critical to American lives and US security than now, when it’s just an inconvenience/embarrassment to the DNC. Points where specifically the joint chiefs, the speaker, etc. should’ve been in the loop and/or more viable to question the “Everything’s fine.” narrative. Assuming they weren't...

  43. Roughneck   11 months ago

When you disagree with a liberal, they want you to die. Ergo, it’s not much of a stretch for them to lie, cheat, steal, cover up, fabricate, obscurate and resort to any and all such tactics in order to maintain their grip on power. If they had told the truth about O’Biden’s mental condition early on, it would have been a disaster for them. Now, it’s turned into something more like the Dimocrat Apocalypse. And the mainstream media has aided and abetted them at every step of the way.
