Why America Should Be More Like Sweden (It's Not What You Think!)
Sweden reformed socialistic aspects of its pension system and introduced partial privatization.

I recently had a fascinating meeting with the Swedish ambassador to the United States, Urban Ahlin, who made me wonder if America should be more like Sweden. Over lunch, Ahlin explained that Sweden actually balances their annual budget. I asked myself, could Europe's socialists actually be more fiscally responsible than Democrats, and even some Republicans?
Before his appointment as ambassador to the United States for Sweden's current conservative-led government, Ahlin was a longtime Social Democrat, the former speaker of the Riksdag (the Swedish equivalent of speaker of the House), and once the chair of the Socialist Group in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly. So imagine my shock when he explained to me that no political party in Sweden would support a government retirement pension program that doesn't balance.
Impressively, the Swedes feature partial privatization in their pension system, tie benefits to contributions, and vote each year on supplemental benefits based on demographic and economic conditions, all while balancing their budget.
By rejecting socialism and embracing privatization as well as mechanisms to prevent overspending, the Swedes demonstrated that reforming entitlement programs in a fiscally prudent way is not a pipe dream after all.
Conversely, U.S. Social Security benefits are guaranteed regardless of economic or demographic conditions. Social Security, among other programs, is deliberately excluded from our government's normal budgetary process. Social Security and other entitlement programs are considered "mandatory spending," in which funding is provided without congressional debate or action.
Putting entitlement spending on autopilot means the federal debt, currently standing at $34 trillion, will only grow. Mandatory spending, which includes, but is not limited to, Social Security, accounts for about two-thirds of government spending. The annual total dollar amount of mandatory spending increases by an average of about 10 percent per year.
The level of automatic mandatory funding demonstrates the staggering extent of the federal government's spending problem. Last year's tax revenue, about $4.4 trillion, just barely pays for mandatory entitlement spending. Therefore, much of the remaining $1.7 trillion we spend on our military and other programs is funded with borrowed money.
Unlike Congress, which continues to ignore our spending program, Sweden's leaders enacted reforms that made its pension system solvent.
Sweden previously promised a socialist pension program similar to Social Security. Under that retirement system, Swedish citizens were, subject to certain requirements, entitled to a universal basic and supplemental income.
Facing alarming projections of insolvency in the 1980s, Sweden established a commission to review the pension program's fiscal sustainability and develop options for reform.
Sweden's efforts were not immediately successful. The pension commission presented its recommendations during an economic downturn in 1990, which the Swedish parliament rejected. But Sweden continued to seek a solution. A new working group, comprised of representatives of each of the seven political parties, found that the aging Swedish population, inflation, and rising unemployment eroded the sustainability of the Swedish pension system. The working group also found that, barring reforms, the payroll tax would need to rise from 18 percent to 30 percent to support the program. The Swedes rejected both an initial set of reforms and a confiscatory tax increase.
So how did the Scandinavian country get back on the path to a sustainable pension system?
The Swedes' pension reforms worked because they abandoned many of the socialistic aspects of its previous system. Sweden rejected Social Security–like defined benefits in favor of a defined contribution rate. Sweden also introduced some privatization into the system, which empowers beneficiaries to determine how to invest their retirement funds and take an active role in planning for their own future.
Critically, the new system features a mechanism called the "brake," which is designed to prevent overspending by automatically preventing benefits from growing quicker than contributions.
The new Swedish system was fully implemented in 2003, and it has withstood the test of time. Swedish benefits have consistently increased, and their pension program has featured a surplus in all but three of the last 20 years. For the last 10 years, the program experienced a consistently growing surplus. Even during the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swedish pension system remained strong. Conversely, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects that the Social Security's retirement account will be depleted in 2032.
Today, the Swedish system consistently ranks among the world's best-performing retirement income programs. This feat was accomplished because Sweden recognized the most socialistic aspects of the program were failing and implemented reforms to avoid the same problems that plague Social Security: unsustainability and passing the costs of overspending to future generations.
America's officials should act like adults and acknowledge that Social Security can only be strengthened by ending the problem of uncontrolled costs. In this sense, maybe America should be more like Sweden.

That last one is really less "phobia" and more "misia".
I've seen fat Swedish girls in Malmö.
My anecdotal evidence may be tainted by the fact that we were at a Pizza Hut that a) served beer and b) was an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet.
Hard to judge your anecdote without context. Have you ever been to a bowling alley in the Milwaukee area?
Very similar vibe.
Their drag queen story hour events include complimentary Swedish meatballs.
Also can't be sure they're actually women.

There was a Swedish girl at my college. She was surprisingly plain. We also had a French girl that looked like a slightly less hair Ernest Borgnine. But then it was a tech school
Thats because the Scandinavian countries spent a few centuries kidnapping the hottest women in Europe and taking them home. It's why British and French women are exceptionally ugly.
The US social security system involves hundreds of millions of people. Sweden has a population of 10.5 million folks -or- slightly more than double that of Kentucky. One of those is potentially manageable whereas the other is far too big to function. I think it also helps that Sweden doesn’t allow millions of illegals to enter and remain in their country annually that require copious amounts of public spending to do so.
What makes you think that once a polity gets into the millions, hundreds of millions is any more unwieldy than 10 million? Either way is way above the numbers where there's a chance to have face-to-face between all.
"When the numbers are this big they’re just pretend!"—Kate McKinnon as Elizabeth Warren
While there are other factors, Sweden compared with the US. Ideally, each person becomes individually responsible for this. Congress will never move it to that but a system collapse would put that on the table.
When the system collapses in the US, the table will be smashed and burned.
Might want to take a look what has been happening in Sweden these past few years. Lots of problems caused by non-Swedes. Their doors are wide open albeit a smaller border.
That's changed now that Swedes have elected an extremist far-right, practically-Hitler government, who hate food trucks and being culturally enriched.
Sweden's right-wing announces new government with far-right backing
"The Sweden Democrats, the country's far-right party, remains firmly anti-immigration and anti-multiculturalism despite a polished appearance... far-right far-right far-right far-right "
That's the wrong kind of democracy!
The populists must be stopped, to save democracy...
The thing with the "far right" movements in most of Scandanavia is that the main new culture that's been coming into their countries is Muslim refugees, many of them also being fundamentalist Islamists who don't seem to have much (if any) interest in integrating into the secular society. That's why there's so many prominently gay members of the "far right" in Europe
There was a case about 20 years ago where a group of "immigrant" men raped a Swedish woman, and the "multicultiral" position shook out to be that they shouldn't be prosecuted because in their (Sharia) culture, the rape would have been considered her fault for not being sufficiently covered; even the usual leftist "fact-checkers" refute the idea that there are "no go zones" with the explanation that three's nowhere that the police officially can't go, but there are "problem areas" where the police don't go because of the level of violence, crime, and attacks on law enforcement when they do go there.
The entire population of the US is hundreds of millions. They are not all in the social security system. That said, neither are the ten millions of Swedes. Either way, that's only one order of magnitude difference. It is not self-evident that the Swedish system can't scale to one order fo magnitude. What are your reasons for believing so?
Many Americans not taking from the system are forced to pay into it; they are part of the system.
A multiplier of thirty is a large increase at these numbers. You can use “only” but I wouldn’t.
Socialism scales poorly. Different and potentially opposing cultures don’t always dovetail well together. The manager of the system is the US government. The US is facing an invasion problem that Sweden isn’t, stretching the public coffers. Tragedy of commons in a society that has largely become a consumer class portends problems.
I think the Amish are literally the only Americans who aren't in the Social Security system.
They're not officially exempt; they just manage their money distribution so that they technically don't have taxable personal income.
Railroad workers and members of Congress have traditionally had their own pension systems which get them exempted from the SS system.
The Railroad workers might not still be in that situation since the "deregulation" a few decades back. I never worked for a railroad and don't know for sure one way or the other.
Collectivism frequently has a real problem with scaling up once a population gets to be too big for "everyone to know everyone"; which is why it seems workable in a Kibbutz, or a Commune, or an Amish village (the Amish work ethic probably helps it function a little bigger than other examples).
I'd think that is a portion of "socialism" can be made to work for 10 Million, it should be possible to scale up to hundreds of millions, though. Sweden does historically have something of a work ethic that isn't typically shared by leftists and "progressives" in the USA, though.
Two things which help Sweden cover the costs on their heavy social spending which aren't likely to translate to the USA though:
Sweden didn't take up responsibility (and doesn't mantain the capability) to try to protect the bulk of the world.
Sweden's left-leaning parties have given up on the notion that a small percentage of the national population can be made to pay for an ample "safety net" to cover the rest of the population. If any DSA-affiliated politician were to propose the tax policies that are currently in place in Sweden (60% marginal income tax rate starting at 120% of the median income, plus 25% VAT cooked into the sale price of most goods/services in the country), they'd find themselves facing a Kenosha-style "mostly peaceful" demonstration.
I think it also helps that Sweden doesn’t allow millions of illegals to enter and remain in their country annually that require copious amounts of public spending to do so.
You might be shocked by how many immigrants Sweden has, though you probably wouldn't be shocked by the effect they've had.
In completely unrelated news, Sweden is one of only two nations (the other being Mexico) that tracks incidents of "hand grenade crime" these days.
Prior to 2018, hand grenades weren't legally classified as "weapons" in Sweden. There's probably some people left who held onto their personal "stash" when the laws were changed.
Mexico just has a huge swath of the country where the government has little to no authority in practice. I've heard varying claims that that zone includes most of the land within some distance of the US border between 10 and 50 miles; Tijuana/Ensenada, and maybe Ciudad Juarez might be some small exceptions since the border crossings near those cities might be too tightly controlled from the northern side to be worth it for the cartels to try to hold the southern side.
I think you're drawing a narrow — too narrow for most purposes — meaning to "socialism" when you describe Swedish policy in this regard as "rejecting socialism". More like "being prudent", "not being reckless". In fact by adjusting "each year...supplemental benefits based on demographic and economic conditions," they're arguably more socialist than a defined-benefits program is.
Even Jerry Brown was getting worried that California taxes were going disproportionately to public employee pension funds, instead of spending it on progressive priorities like helping the poor or protecting the environment.
...
But your implication is that countries that use a more flexible budget for benefits like Sweden won't result in a debt pile-up. We have only two data points here; how do we know that, given similar politics to what the USA's had, Congress wouldn't inflate the benefits biennially to give as much or more red ink?
Wrong place.
Sweden's success came from political parties working together. That process requires compromise. I would ask Senator Paul is he ready to compromise? I am ready for changes in the SS and Medicare system, but only through compromise.
They have a largely homogeneous culture. They feel a race identity. As they have become less homogenous the support for various programs have decreased. Congrats. Youre recognizing the issue. Doubt you’ll actually learn the lesson.
https://www.economist.com/the-economist-explains/2017/06/23/how-immigration-is-changing-the-swedish-welfare-state
Parody.
There is no room to work with the democrats. They have to go.
Without hyperbole, the American Democratic Party has enacted more genocide and race hate than every other political party in the Western world aside from the Nazi's. Even Mussolini or Franco didn't kill as many for being racial minorities.
OK, so they will only cut off one of my kid's breasts. Compromise.
Why does SS and Medicare reform necessitate cutting off anyone's breasts?
Their pension system may be solvent.
However, the Swedes have committed cultural suicide.
They have let in tens of thousands, maybe millions of moslem illegal immigrants.
The once almost crime free and orderly society, now suffers from no go zones and grenade attacks among criminal gangs.
The welfare system is what will collapse.
In one generation, Sweden will be a Muslim majority country.
One needs only look at all the other Moslem majority countries to see what is in store for formerly tolerant Sweden
You have exaggerated the problem of crime in Sweden as much as you probably would do here. The immigrants in Sweden like in most countries will integrate within a generation and like most immigrants will likely benefit the country more than hinder it.
LOL
Food trucks to the rescue!
The immigrants in Sweden like in most countries will integrate within a generation
By definition, if you remain a Muslim in a historically and demographically Christian or atheist country, you are not integrating. And Muslim immigrants remain Muslims.
A Swede that is bjørn a Christian will likely remain one but may not be able to affjørd to subsidize others.
Easy to fund social programs with so much raping and pillaging in the past.
My ancestors are Norwegian and English.
I should be paying myself reparations.
Shame on you. And congratulations!
I refer to that as "Going to work".
Similar could be said for being a grenade-attacking gang member in a historically and demographically grenade-attacking-gang-member-free country.
There is not a chance in hell of that happening.
The Swedish Democrats wouldn’t be successful in any meaningful sense if this was true.
You continue to profess ignorance on everything.
Rotherham, UK would like a word with you.
immigrants in Sweden like in most countries will integrate within a generation
Islam does not allow integration.
When the Bushpigs were “helping” Iraq write their new Constitution that cost the USA over $3 trillion the first law was that all law must adhere to the Quran.
It is exactly to what US evangelicals want here except with a different Book of Bullshit.
Then senators Joe Biden (D) and Hillary Clinton (D) were goose stepping alongside dubya into Iraq and Afghanistan.
The only person here that supports Bush is the strawman in your head.
His precious Joe was the biggest war drummer on the Democrat's side of the aisle.
And of course a neocon warpig like Buttplug knows this.
"It is exactly to what US evangelicals want here"
Evangelicals want you Nazis to leave them the fuck alone and stop trying to fuck with their kids.
stop trying to fuck
withtheir kids.Fixed it.
I dare you to spend a week, in a rainbow T-shirt, in any of the hard core Muslim ghettoes in Europe, and then report how the assimilation is going.
And yet right wingers in the USA try to block hardworking, pro-family Christian immigrants from the south, instead of welcoming them as the fellow Republicans they should become.
With the border wide open, there's no way to know whether or how many "immigrants" fit that description. Beneficial immigration depends on border security.
So why not provide some immigration reform so the hard working conservative immigrants have a chance to come into this country? If the only option is to sneak into the country all immigrants have little choice but to go that way.
Securing the border has to come first. It doesn't matter what our rules are if "migrants" can literally walk around them. Once we have sufficient control over the border to stop most illegal crossings, then we can set rules about who and how many get in. Then we can make it easier for those we select as beneficial to come in.
"If the only option is to sneak into the country all immigrants have little choice but to go that way"
Of course they have a choice. They can stay in their own countries. But we can't provide better options for entry until we have greatly improved control over entries.
I feel like you are setting up a no-win situation, where there will never be a solution that is acceptable to you. This country needs workers that we force to sneak in first. By setting the measure at the border we force a single point of failure, that most people think is failing.
Instead treat the problem in a more holistic fashion. Start by looking at what is driving people to come to the US and how that can be reduced. Reform immigration so more people can come legally. Set a path to citizenship for Dreamers. All three of these would reduce immigration pressure at the borders and make the job of enforcing border security easier and likely more successful.
I feel like you are setting up a no-win situation, where there will never be a solution that is acceptable to you.
Your psychic powers are not working. I will handle saying what I think, thank you.
This country needs workers,
I agree, but we need to make sure the foreigners coming in are coming to meet our needs, and are not undesirables. That requires a much more secure border.
that we force to sneak in first.
We are not forcing anyone to come here.
By setting the measure at the border we force a single point of failure, that most people think is failing.
Don't know what that gibberish means.
Start by looking at what is driving people to come to the US and how that can be reduced.
Not our problem.
Reform immigration so more people can come legally.
I agree. The first step is border security.
Set a path to citizenship for Dreamers.
I agree. People brought here illegally as minors should not be punished for their parents' crime. But neither should they be allowed to sponser the entry of anyone else.
All three of these would reduce immigration pressure at the borders
Not without good border security. If we set rules that allow more to come in legally based on our criteria for who we want, those who don't meet our requirements will still come in if the border is so wide open that they can just walk around the process.
make the job of enforcing border security easier and likely more successful.
Easier is not what we need. We need a much greater effort to secure the border and prevent illegal entries. That will not be easier, but it's necessary.
If you allowed more legal immigration, stopping illegal immigration wouldn't be as hard.
I don't see why it has to be all one or the other. Just get them both done simultaneously.
So why not provide some immigration reform
Go fuck yourself sea lion. The original exchange was reform for border security. You fuckers got your reform and then fucked the immigrants you previously let in by allowing more in. Then, when Immigration reform was offered again, you called the guy who offered it Hitler and refused. You are the immigration problem. Even a good portion of the immigrants who've been here for less than a generation know this. Choke to death on diseased undocumented immigrant dick.
Sweden’s migration policy is undergoing a paradigm shift. The Government is intensifying its efforts to reduce, in full compliance with Sweden’s international commitments, the number of migrants coming irregularly to Sweden. Labour immigration fraud and abuses must be stopped and the ‘shadow society’ combated.
https://www.government.se/government-policy/swedens-new-migration-policy/
So since they have fiscal responsibility they recognize and act on issues.
Very surprised that a #NeverHaley person was permitted to have their writings on Koch owned websites.
Was going to say the same thing. Is reason starting to lean libritarian?
They are leaning at 89°.
They read your comment from yesterday regarding senator Paul. You are now entitled to a bobblehead Robby as a thank you.
The shirt was too expensive? =(
Can I get a bobble head Liz?
Nobody needs 23 varieties of Reason editor bobbleheads.
Also, KMW was worried that the unstable commenters, such as squirrel and Pubic Unintelligible, would purchase the female bobbleheads, cram them up their asses, take pics, post those pics on their blogs, and drop links to said blogs with pics of female editor bobbleheads crammed up their asses in these here comments.
That was awfully specific…
The plug for squirrel and PU was too much? Should have pulled that out?
Might have made the comment pop a bit.
You can' but they ship out as ENB 'Liz'
The day an ENB bobblehead shows up is the day that it shows up in a diorama of her making sammiches at Subway. Then there would be the bobblehead holding a coat hanger. Bobblehead visiting a food truck operated by a sex worker. Unless they priced it ridiculously high, that is what the magic 8 ball predicts. Plus the stuff previously mentioned.
ENB could ink a lucrative deal endorsing Subway in her role as official sandwich maker for Reason Magazine.
Hmm, hates libertarian women, big time Trump-tard – you’re really Milo Yiannopoulos – aren’t you?
ENB is even less libertarian than your fascist ass.
Let’s not get carried away.
visiting a food truck operated by a sex worker.
Wait, I know this one. "Handjobs $20 Cheese Sandwiches $2" right?
They didn't let him mention Nikki.
Nikki also went full kamala in a written QA, blaming migration on climate change.
https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CHRG-115shrg31612/html/CHRG-115shrg31612.htm
If confirmed I commit to engaging experts at the State Department and the U.N. on the issues of climate change and refugee resettlement. The U.N. plays a significant role in the management of refugees on a global basis. If confirmed, the role that climate change plays in refugee flows is an issue I look forward to assessing, and assisting refugees is a U.S. policy in which I look forward to engaging.
There really is no position she won't take for money.
She's just an uber-expensive whore.
Are you implying she gives you bad bang for the buck just like kamala?
Neocon Barbie UN Climate Policy Playset. Where little girlbosses can learn to use climate propaganda to force global Marxism on populations around the world.
Beta male Ken and Lear jet with climate change bumper sticker sold separately.
I'm a bit astounded at how Left the Neocons have become. Not at all surprised that they're whoring that hard on the left side of the corner. Just that they're doing so as even large portions of the Left are saying "WTF? Where's all the business going?"
Nikki Haley? I'm surprised Reason is still pushing that neo-Confederate.
#NeverNikki -
Well, she'll never be the President of Sweden, either. That's another plus.
In Sweden, Haley is a 2.
Yeah but they use Centigrade, so a 2 to us is -17 to them.
Thinking the same. On the other hand Rand Paul does more to promote libertarianism in a typical week than Reason can manage in a year. But he's an icky Republican so...
If the US raised taxes to Swedish levels, we could balance the budget and pay lavish benefits.
Democrats would love that; however, it wouldn't work: it would tear us apart as a nation. Most Americans wouldn't want to live like the Swedes do.
Yeah, Sweden takes almost 45% of GDP in taxes, compared to 25% in the US. We can argue about what the Swedes get in return, but I don't want to give up a third of my money for others to spend it for me.
Income tax rates in Sweden go up to 52%, plus mandatory retirement and healthcare.
Depressingly, US government spending is close to 40% of GDP, so we are getting there. And crowding out of private investment by government spending is at least as harmful as the taxation itself.
Good point. The tax rate is not the point. It's the spending that matters because someday the bill comes due.
The spending is harmful even if the bill never comes due.
The economy has limited productive capacity. If half of that is eaten up by government spending based on political considerations, only half remains to what people actually want.
Your 25% is federal only. Local and state bring it up to 40%.
Is there similar local taxes in Sweden, I wonder?
VAT is national; very few countries have any other sales taxes. India, Brazil, Canada come to mind.
I don't know anything about property or income taxes, but my instinct says a country of 10M simply has no need for such fine granularity, and all the bureaucracies necessary.
I didn’t rtfa, but a quick search seems to show that number is from national and municipal combined.
For some, the federal tax rate is 32%, plus 12% for FICA (on the first 168K), plus 3% for Medicare surcharge, and the state tax rate is 10%, plus another 9% on everything you spend, plus 1 or 2% of the value of your home every year.
If taxes were abolished, your income would double, and stuff would cost half as much (because everyone else’s taxes would be abolished too). We would be 4 times better off.
That's my attitude too, but it wouldn't be 4x, still only 2x, because everyone would adjust; you're counting the same thing twice from opposite sides. And you'd still have to pay for your own pensions, unemployment insurance, etc. So maybe only 1.5x. But on the other hand, most of those bureaucrats would have to find productive jobs in competitive markets, so society would be a whole lot better off.
My favorite example is building codes. You'd still have to satisfy inspectors and construction standards to get bank loans and insurance, but in a free market, the bureaucrats would vanish and you'd be left with actually useful standards without the nitpickers looking for bribes.
BUT SELF-RELIANCE AND SELF-FUNDING IS UNFAIR!!!
stuff would cost half as much
Including the "stuff" YOU sell to make a living. I'm a supporter of the FairTax but it wouldn't make us "4 times better off".
Correct, only 2x, and your own pensions and such would have to come out of it. But even "only" 1.5x is still far better off.
Sweden is like Denmark, and Norway - countries with relatively small and, until recently, extremely ethnically homogeneous populations. Which, just due to human nature, makes it a bit easier for people to support a robust welfare state.
Their demographics have changed quite a bit in the past 20 years or so: Their largest ethnic minority used to be Finns at under 5% of the population. Now they estimate that 25% of the population is of foreign origin, and more people speak Arabic than Finnish.
Denmark has been a bit more conservative on the immigrant front - they only have an immigrant population of about 10%, and fewer of them are middle eastern muslims (who they all call 'Turks', regardless of national origin).
The two most prolific traders of European slaves--the Vikings and the Arabs--are finally united!
It's 1619 all over again!
And don't get them started on the skraelings.
Elizabeth Warren is PROUD to be called a skraeling, dammit!!!
(What's it like, to be skraeling Elizabeth Warren, by the way? And, is there video? ASS-king for a fiend!)
Twat would happen if (tomorrow, say) Bill Clinton and The Donald were busted, together, skraeling both Elizabeth Warren and Spermy Daniels (and perhaps Monica Lewinsky ass well) at the same time? TWAT would the moralistic right-wing “Church Ladies” etc., say to THAT?
If the US cut spending back to 2018 levels, the budget would be balanced today, with no tax hikes needed.
We can’t do that! Do you want everyone to die?!
It's true. I remember 2018. We were all dead.
For like the 5th time since the mass starvations in the 1970s.
'So how did the Scandinavian country get back on the path to a sustainable pension system?'
Hunger games?
The smart ones kept the Islamic rabble from migrating to their countries. As opposed to say, France and Britain. Where that has gone oh so well.
California is still going after doctors over "covid misinformation. "
https://justthenews.com/nation/free-speech/california-still-threatening-doctors-covid-claims-after-ditching-misinformation
Prepare for Disease X with vaccine X lockdowns X (bankrupt cities?) money printing X, Mandates X, Bans X, Universal basic income X, equal outcomes X. From the NIH:
Disease X is supposed to be caused by a “pathogen X.” Such a pathogen is expected to be a zoonosis, most likely an RNA virus, emerging from an area where the right mix of risk factors highly promotes the risk for sustained transmission.
I suspect this is placed into progressive economic models nowadays.
Time for doctors to go after California for Covid misinformation. Finding a judge who isn't bribable or compromised will be tough though.
Oh Rand - You sound so smart when you speak libertarian. I wish you wouldn't spend so much time ranting about stupid stuff like Anthony Fauci. Call your dad more often.
Ahh yes. The libertarian belief in false science, lock downs, and mandates.
'...I wish you wouldn’t spend so much time ranting about stupid stuff like Anthony Fauci..."
Yeah, that lying criminal should get a pass, right Asshole from Maine?
The Maine rate of actual libertarians / self declared libertarians remains low. So far only chumby in the numerator.
Maybe sarc’s name is Jim.
Beam? The Beams of Egypt, Maine?
He wouldn’t have to if we could just get it over with, and execute Fauci for crimes against humanity.
What's wrong with a libertarian calling out an authoritarian con man hiding behind the guise of being a scientist?
Don't give up on the USA and start perching Venezuela on a pedestal Rand Paul.
Next let's understand what is different about America and Sweden such that this solution is possible there but blocked here.
Swedish citizens take responsibility, Americans don't. And why is that? Because one party has convinced its members they they deserve to benefit while only others should contribute. That's why the left's demonization propaganda campaign is so critical. If you come to believe every dollar earned by someone you hate is illegitimate why wouldn't you demand that be confiscated before you contribute? That's especially true when you're normalized the understanding that the political system exists to give money to those who vote. Democrats are what they've always been: the Tammany Party.
It's possible in Sweden because Sweden is populated by a homogeneous group of collectivists and conformists who say "how high" when the government tells them to jump. It's a miserable country where everybody has low expectations for their future.
That is the difference. I wouldn't want to live in a country like that, and neither would most Americans.
And yet Sweden and other Scandinavian countries have the happiest populations. Maybe they just don't know they should be miserable.
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/happiest-countries-in-the-world
I understand goldfish are pretty happy as well. They don’t know any better.
No kidding....
https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/businessreview/2017/09/28/expert-panel-people-from-small-socially-cohesive-countries-are-happier/
When there is less tribal conflict...
And yet Sweden and other Scandinavian countries have the happiest populations.
I thought by now people would know that these surveys are not meaningful measures of happiness; these surveys primarily measure how culturally acceptable it is to express your discontent in a society.
Maybe they just don’t know they should be miserable.
That is another issue with Scandinavians: they really don't know any better, since they are indoctrinated from birth into their statist societies.
I’ve seen documentaries that show how they’re conditioned to low expectations.
Like eating bugs?
And yet, didn't Sweden take the most prudent path forward on COVID restrictions? And weren't they proven right in the long run?
What Sweden did was rely more heavily on voluntary compliance than other countries. They could do that because people have health care so are not as concerned about getting sick, they have more safety nets to protect people and the people tend to follow government suggestions.
It's fascinating: people like you attribute every government failure to having not enough government.
In actual fact, Sweden could do this because its government isn't run by incompetent ultra-wealthy nutcases like Anthony Fauci, because its bureaucracy isn't in a revolving door with industry. Instead, Sweden is largely run by average people with average incomes who will retire on average pensions and generally try to do something sensible when it comes to policies.
I thought Obumercare took care of all of that.
You leftards are as dumb as F'En rocks.
Wow, Peanuts, have any of you been following the black-on-black crime between Jason Whitlock and Stephen A. Smith?
“I mean it from my soul when I say this is the worst human being I’ve ever known,” Smith said. “I don’t know of another human being worse than Jason Whitlock. He is a piece of s–t. He’s the dude that’s going to have a funeral and ain’t going to be no pallbearers.”
.
“While you were on Blaze TV spewing that bulls–t to people, did you tell them that? Did you tell them how you stood outside of ‘First Take’ begging me to talk to you?” Smith said. “Did you tell them that once this same article in Deadspin came out, weeks later you wrote a lengthy apology to me in an e-mail begging me to forgive you? Pointing out how you were betrayed by this particular writer so you know how I must feel that you betrayed me? Did you tell the folks that? You bitch. Did you tell them? You fat piece of s–t.”
.
Jemele Hill, a former ESPN colleague and current journalist at the Atlantic, said she agreed with what Smith had to say.
.
“Stephen A Smith told the truth,” she said on X. “Ole Boy tried to recruit a bunch of us to do some work for what was then the Undefeated and we did not want to work with him.”
.
But perhaps one of the more astonishing comments from Smith came when he called Whitlock a person who was “worse than white supremacist.”
“You see what he does is, he’s the one that puts himself in front of white folks. The white folks, not all white folks, not most white folks, but the white folks that dare we say may have a problem with black folks,” Smith said.

Apparently Whitlock has become a go-to "House Negro" for conservative propagandists like Glenn Beck and Jesse Water.

No, you’re a fucking snowflake who only gets offended when one of your Lawn Jockeys is criticized.
Truly a piece of filth.
You’re a lapdog for global Marxist and pedophile enthusiast George Soros.
You're too stupid to know that Soros is a successful capitalist and has more in common with Hayek than your fascist loverboy Fatass Donnie ever will.
Your religion is full of lies. Soros constantly uses government to enrich himself.
Remember hydroxychloroquine? The stuff that was supposed to help you fight COVID-19, touted by Trump? Well, the effects of hydroxychloroquine are in - taking hydroxychloroquine off-label to treat COVID is associated with an 11% increase in mortality. Huh. Maybe taking hydroxychloroquine to treat a "bad flu" just because Trump said so is a bad idea.

Really easy to discredit. It was a meta analysis that cherry picked only studies that had a poor outcome.
I don't really believe that the drug in question works for this application, but this study is garbage.
The primary studies used by jeff are using the alternative drugs ge decries only late stage after hospitalization. But anti viral have never been used at that stage. The studies were intentionally done to push the propaganda jeff is currently using. On fact early treatment, as a normal anti viral, there is a benefit. And this has shown in many studies.
Which scientific study was purposefully done to push propaganda? Care to give an example?
It was a meta analysis that cherry picked only studies that had a poor outcome.
No they didn't. Read the paper.
"Cue the usual suspects who will now try to discredit the study by nitpicking every detail"
Cue chemjeff (who only gives a shit about hydroxychloroquine because his boss told him to shit on it because something, something Donald J. Trump), try to cut off any criticism of his link by invoking biAs.
Also cue creamjeff trying to portray an oddly selective meta analysis as an actual study.
Fuck off ML. Nobody cares what you think about anything.
Fuck off, creamjeff, you fat unrepentant Nazi. Name one person here who doesn't hate you. Everyone here absolutely loathes you because you're a liar, a shill and a fraud.

Estimates aren't data, GFY.
You know what Trump also touted? And still brags about? The vaccines.
And judging by the responses to this article, I see that quite a few commenters are on the "racial identity dictates national policy" bandwagon. Show of hands, who here agrees with the Great Replacement Theory?
"the “racial identity dictates national policy” bandwagon"
Tell us more about critical race theory, creamjeff.
I bet ML believes in Great Replacement Theory.
I know creamjeff believes that racial identity dictates social and civic policy, a la CRT. The fat fucking Nazi.
But look at the racist fuck try to pretend that opposition to uncontrolled illegal immigration is somehow bad. Social and healthcare infrastructure is swamped, housing can't keep up and charities are being overloaded and crushed; but creamjeff's ActBlue talking points tell him to insinuate that you're a bigot for noticing.
What a fucking piece of absolute garbage this fat Nazi is.
Why shouldn't he?
Of course, you probably believe that Demography is Destiny, which is part of the Democratic Party marketing booklet (and totally not any sort of replacement scheme).
No, I don’t believe “demography is destiny”. Unlike most people around here it seems, I don’t think people are robots with cultural programming hardwired into their brains. FFS America itself is proof that the Great Replacement Theory is false. Here, a bunch of people came from all over the world, from all sorts of cultures, and formed an American culture distinct from all of them.
If one really believes that the Great Replacement Theory is true, then it must follow that one must also believe that individuals are static – that once they are born and grow up, they are programmed with a set of cultural values, and that programming never changes. Moreover one must also believe that their descendants cannot have cultural values that are substantively different from their parents. It predicts that if Germans and Irish and Italians come here, they and their descendants remain German and Irish and Italian, not just in lineage but in their cultural values, forever and ever. And yet that’s not true, empirically.
The only difference now is that instead of Germans and Irish and Italians, now we have Somalis and Afghanis and Guatemalans, who are from places and cultures very dissimilar to Europe, to which most white Americans cannot easily relate. But if you believe as I do that individuals are not static, but have independent thought and agency, then the result will turn out the same as before. America will not become Somalia or Guatemala, just like America did not become Germany or Ireland or Italy.
Unless, one believes that Somalis and Afghanis and Guatemalans are just inherently inferior. White Europeans are able to change and adapt to become more like America, but those other places have people who are inferior and cannot do so. THEY are like simpleton robots, unlike the superior white Europeans. Is that the case? Are they inferior to white Europeans?
Step 1: It is not happening.
Step 2: It is happening but only a little.
Step 3: It is happening and actually a good thing.
Step 4: It happened and too late to change course.
Step 5: Racism <- you are here
We're currently transitioning from Step 2 to Step 3 with "transgender" mutilation of children.
Lots of white supremacists complaining about immigrants in their sanctuary social construct and lack of policing, catch-and-release policies.

Nobody cares what Rand Paul Thinks. Join the New Koch Libertarians! Climb aboard the Nikki Train!

“What does Rand Paul mean? Nothing!” Sununu said. “I’m sorry, but nobody cares what Rand Paul thinks in this race. This race is in Iowa, its in New Hampshire, it’s in South Carolina. She’s the only candidate that’s surging. We’ve made it effectively a one on one race at this point between Nikki and Donald Trump.”
“She hasn’t set any expectations in Iowa. Only Trump and DeSantis have set expectations to win Iowa. Trump has set the only expectations that he’s going to win New Hampshire. So she’s challenging all those expectations right now. She’s surging right now, so there’s no doubt a lot of folks are coming out to support her,” he added.
“So with all due respect to the senator, maybe when the U.S. Senate actually starts doing something and actually starts delivering some results, they can stand on a soapbox and think that their words matter. But until then, sorry Rand Paul, nobody cares,” he concluded.
Unfortunately for Sununu, it appears he was dead wrong because after his appearance on Newsmax, he was flooded on X with critics saying that they do, in fact, care what Paul thinks."
Now show of hands. Who cares what Sununu thinks? I have all night.
So I missed the discussion yesterday about the Trump immunity defense and the hypothetical assassination question. I did note that in the comments it seemed that a lot of people took the assassination hypothetical far too literally.
Yes, if it ever comes to the point where the president orders the assassination of a political rival, and it is known concretely that he did, and even despite that the House and Senate refuse to impeach and/or convict, then we are probably already far down the civil war path and questions of constitutionality become increasingly moot.
HOWEVER, as I see it anyway, the point of that question was to test the outer limits of the Trump team's immunity defense reasoning. And the Trump team with their answer basically said that there is no limiting principle - yes, even if the president orders assassination, he is still immune if Congress refuses to act. So based on this reasoning, if the Trump immunity defense applies even for as serious of a crime as assassination, then it stands to reason that it applies to all lesser crimes as well. So, for example, if the president stole government documents. Or committed obstruction of justice. Crimes for which it is far more in the realm of possibility than ordering an assassination of a political rival, and ALSO crimes for which it is far more likely in the realm of the possibility that Congress would refuse to act even if the president was concretely guilty of these crimes. Furthermore, no one in their right mind is going to launch a civil war because the president stole a government document, so these crimes do not inherently threaten the stability of the Republic itself.
So perhaps a better hypothetical might be, suppose the president is caught red-handed stealing White House furniture on his way out the door, and Congress refuses to act. Is the president immune for the crime of theft?
Go fuck yourself, you fat Nazi. Political prosecution and kangaroo courts won't be legitimate no matter how long winded your endorsement.
This has already happened, so yeah, they are immune.
Political problems have political solutions.
Actually, the Clinton’s actually did take some furniture on the way out of the White House.
https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/reason/2016/05/21/fact-check-was-hillary-and-bill-clinton-forced-to-return-furniture-they-took-from-white-house/1009481007/
Trump, 2019:
""Then I have an Article II, where I have the right to do whatever I want as president."
So, he was right?
The Clinton’s seemed to think so.
Is Trump right? Can the president do whatever he wants?
Now do classified documents.
And here's ML again to call me a Nazi. How boring.
Not boring enough to stop you from whining about it.
Here's the deal, creamjeff, stop pushing the beliefs and policies of the Third Reich and I'll stop calling you a Nazi.
the point of that question was to test the outer limits of the Trump team’s immunity defense reasoning. And the Trump team with their answer basically said that there is no limiting principle – yes, even if the president orders assassination, he is still immune if Congress refuses to act.
If there is no limiting principle, then that is indeed true. Ask for a limiting principle and the response is "You're a fascist! You voted for Biden! Nya nya nya!"
Remember that wacky Chinese lab in the California desert with the Covid and Ebola and dead mice and shit? Yeah. Me neither.
https://thesovereignmind.substack.com/p/house-of-horrors-an-exclusive-in
This report claims local officials spent months repeatedly trying to obtain assistance from the CDC and on a number of occasions the CDC hung up on them mid-conversation. Ultimately, local officials contacted their local Member of Congress, Representative Jim Costa, who then got the CDC to inspect the Reedley biolab. Here is the complete pathogen list as enumerated by the CDC’s own report. (CDC made this list of based solely on the labels. The CDC did not test these samples to assess whether the listed labels were correct).
The CDC counted 20 different infectious pathogens by their own report (below)
The CDC did not even test the wholly unlabeled samples. It did not test the samples labeled “COVID,” even though both SARS-CoV and a chimeric version of the currently endemic COVID-19 are both Select Agents—biological agents that the U.S. government has determined “have the potential to pose a severe threat to public health and safety. Despite their limited local budget, local officials then offered to pay the CDC for the entirety of the cost of testing these samples. The CDC still did no testing. The CDC finally concluded “However, there is insufficient evidence at this time to conclude that there has been a violation of 42 CFR 71.54 or 42 CFR part 73.”
When it came time for local officials to start dismantling the Reedley lab, they set about to review every freezer for evidence of potential pathogens that they needed to destroy. While doing so, local officials and contractors reported that they found a freezer labeled “Ebola” with silver sealed bags inside. They wrote to the CDC “when you are going through and looking for select agents, do the containers need to be labeled individually with what is in it to count as one? We are doing the abatement here in Reedley and a fridge [freezer] had a label on it and one of the words in English was Ebola,” while noting that the containers within were not expressly labeled “Ebola.” The CDC official responded by stating, “Yes, we would typically look for the vial to be labeled as Ebola” and noted that they did not recall seeing the Ebola label. He did not cite any CDC policy when making this pronouncement. You’d think the country’s foremost public health agency would’ve leapt to action at the mere possibility of Ebola virus being handled at an illegal unlicensed lab instead of coming up with the harebrained notion that unlabeled bags were unworthy of their consideration.
Here's how Sweden sees itself:
It's apples and oranges. You can have a welfare state and grinning bankers. You just need really high taxes
Meh. This sort of thing really distorts what socialism is. It's not welfare benefits, be they from the state or partially privatized.
It's about the state controlling the means of production.
It's just an "ism" used as an ad hominem to shut down debate. Doesn't have much meaning anymore.
Gov-'gun' mobs tyrannically and criminally controlling the people's means of production (labors) for themselves ... Take your pick.
Denying the term of it's meaning is just used by [Na]tional So[zi]alist fans to shut down debate.
Depending on who you talk to it can mean a robust social safety net funded by a capitalist economy, government owning the means of production, or something in between. In practice it’s just a word used to attack people, usually by insisting that someone who thinks it means the former really mean the latter. Then the argument is about them, not whatever the subject may have been. It's a typical fallacious argument, and a favorite used by Trump defenders in these comments.
Cool trick. Giving a word 3 different definitions then pretending your own multi-definition cancels out the legitimacy of the term and turns any use of it into fallacious argument.
Why it sounds a lot like the leftard gender idiocy ... A boy is a girl is a trans is a neutral so whatever you think a boy or girl is, is just a fallacious argument... /s
I can think of two reasons why this will never happen here.
Democrats.
Republicans.
American voters.
“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”
H. L. Mencken
"Democracy is the worst form of government, except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
Winston Churchill
Can't win.
If American voters wanted what the Swedes have, Republicans and Democrats would be falling all over themselves to promise to make it happen.
Lump sum cashout.
Everyone gets what they paid into SS all at once. Boomers get a big check, GenZ gets a small one - and then we end the program once and for all.
Not enough in the coffers to cover it? Fine. Literally everything else goes on full stop until the lump sum is paid out. Defense spending, every single agency, every dollar of food stamps and housing assistance, every pension and every salary of every federal employee - they're on full moratorium until SSA pays what it owes and clears its books. And if that's still not enough, then we have a fire sale on government property. Everything from cell phones to computers to government vehicles to federal buildings.
This is how you get out of debt. It's not fun. It's not easy. And you have to go without A LOT. It's all on the chopping block until you get back in the black. And then you can see what you have to work with after that - what you really need and what you never needed in the first place - and budget accordingly.
With, or without, an adjustment to account for inflation since the contribution was made?
With, or without, an adjustment that reflects the "bend points" in the current SS retirement benefits which results in (although it's a bit more complex than this) the first dollar put in returning six times the retirement benefit as the last dollar put in before hitting the cap?
With, or without, an adjustment to reflect the kickback to the fund that higher income retirees make by paying federal income tax on up to 85% of their benefits?
Interesting article. Not sure how this can be implemented in the USA considering the continual political stance on not touching Social Security (even though it is collapsing at an astonishing rate).
Perhaps starting with the choice to opt out of the ponzi scheme and instead into a privatized retirement plan.
The Scandinavian culture developed in some of the harshest conditions on earth. They were too busy fighting nature to waste time on dividing themselves into social groups that were at eachothers throats over very scarce resources. As such they developed a "good enough for now" attitude that carry through to today.
They don't have the keeping up with the next door neighbor attitude that Americans develop. They simply want enough to get by and enjoy life. They are by nature generous to those who don't have enough. Without the materialism treadmill they can do a lot of things we can't.
If you travel to places where lots of Scandinavians settled here in the states you find much the same attitude. The problem is when less easy going folks settle amoung us. They take advantage of our easy going ways and we have to become more guarded and selfish.
The biggest problem the Social Security system in the US is facing is the "baby boom". IIRC, the system is projected to run a surplus again once the "boomers" mostly die off.
Does/did Sweden have the same sort of demographic problem?
60+% income tax rate and very high social trust (until they imported Syrian muslims). Oh and lest I forget, Sweden has less than 11million people.
Apples and oranges.
