Brickbat: The Rising Cost of Getting By

Starting July 12, New York City will require food delivery apps to pay their workers $17.96 an hour. That will rise to $19.96 in hour in 2025 and then be indexed to inflation. Prior to the law taking effect, food delivery workers were making about $12 an hour in the city. New York City's minimum wage is $15. City officials decided that food delivery workers should be paid more than the minimum wage because they are independent contractors, who are taxed more heavily than employees and have other work-related expenses that employees do not have.

Much better than cutting their taxes - this way the city makes more money as low-wage workers make more money. It's a win/win! In fact, the city can now raise their taxes as those fat cat delivery driver bastards make out like bandits.
Much better to put them out of work than consider lowering taxes.
So no tips needed then right. Tipping us for people who don't make minimum wage
Step 3: Profit!
By that logic a zero tax rate would optimize government revenue.
Now you're getting it.

"Couriers’ $18 hourly wage is on hold after lawsuits from DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats prompted a judge to stay the rule. A hearing is scheduled for later this month."

Double post?
I’m making over $30k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.

My understanding of independent contractors was they set their own prices. But I'm not from NYC.
Yep.
That's the way it was back in the day when I was an independent contractor.
I got paid what I could negotiate.
The best part was that when the employees I was working with would tell me I was getting paid a bit more, but they had job security; then I would point out I had a contract for the whole year, and they could be fired tomorrow.
(right to work state means right to fire state)
But in the 21st century, independence is seditious, and probably racist (or anti anti-racist). Better for all of us to be cogs in a totalitarian system, so we can all be free.
This is actually a common mix-up. "Right to work" means you cannot be forced to join a union. "At will employment" means you can fire people for any (non illegal) or no reason at all

Yes and both things you mentioned are simply meant to justify slavery with extra steps
They should stop beating around the bush and start centrally planning the economy in NYC. You know they want to, so why keep up the charade? Come on, set wages and set prices already.
And no more food delivery from hundreds of different types of restaurants. No one needs that many choices (well, except maybe for the elites who run things and can handle lots of choices due to their superior brainpower). A couple of choices, such as a bread line or soup line, is plenty. Maybe they can have a soup of the day thing based on whatever Bill Gates’ farms around that area produced the most of that week.
Wages, prices, food supply, housing, allocated time to be outdoors, and sexual relations (with or without reproduction).
But trannies should be free to do as they please!

I would support NY doing that. Be a great way to show people how messed up central planning is.
From Bernie Sanders when he was running for President:
"You can't just continue growth for the sake of growth in a world in which we are struggling with climate change and all kinds of environmental problems. All right? You don't necessarily need a choice of 23 underarm spray deodorants or of 18 different pairs of sneakers when children are hungry in this country. I don't think the media appreciates the kind of stress that ordinary Americans are working on."
Hey,
The decision to establish a higher minimum wage for food delivery workers was based on the understanding that these workers are categorized as independent contractors. Independent contractors typically face higher tax rates and have additional work-related expenses compared to traditional employees. Therefore, city officials deemed it necessary to ensure that these workers receive a higher wage than the minimum to account for these factors.
This new law aims to address concerns about fair compensation for food delivery workers and improve their overall working conditions. By setting a higher minimum wage for these workers, the city hopes to provide them with better financial stability and acknowledge the additional costs associated with their independent contractor status.
Hey Megan
The decision to post a reply was made with the understanding that my comment would be a response to your comment, about a topic covered in this article, which was good delivery in NYC. Comments can be made about the article, or about other comments

AI?
Or liberal arts degree. Unclear. The “improve working conditions” was humorous.
Weirdly wrapped around an ad for mini-projector?
If sarc were short, he would be a mini-projector.
"understanding" "categorized" "typically" "expenses" "deemed" "necessary" "improve" "stability" "blah, blah, blah" "[your bureaucratic gobbledygook lame excuses here]"
REJECTED
Since taxes on food in New York City is a percentage of the total bill, it also allows NYC to take a higher cut, when prices are raised to comply with this law.
The minimum wage should be $0.00. You are only worth what people are willing to pay you.
The true minimum wage is always zero. Businesses will not employee people if they have to pay them more than their labor is worth to the business.
NYC: Hold my beer!
You're forgetting about the POWER of Gov-Guns.
It's the very reason 'guns' are brought into the equation.
Criminals use 'guns' to get what they want not justice/negotiations.
When 'guns' FORCE delivery contractors to be paid $X/hr; there is nothing the business can "negotiate" if they depend on delivery (which business doesn't). Therefore; 'Guns' used against them DEMAND/FORCE the price not negotiations.
You lost me at “New York City.” I could not care less whether New Yorkers can have food delivered to them in their lairs. Big city political machines and corruption were invented in New York and all the sensible people moved out of the City a long time ago. High density urban centers became dinosaurs when technology advanced beyond them and, if the denizens of NYC don’t look up soon to see the impending meteor strike, they will go down with the final extinction. Taking for granite they keep their BS local. Generally it turns to federal because their stupidity has to be subsidized by the entire nation.
