Brickbat: This Gets My Goat

New California labor rules covering goat herders threaten efforts to combat wildfire. Many areas in the state use goats to reduce overgrown vegetation that could fuel fires by eating it. Goat companies have traditionally paid herders a monthly salary and provided them a place to live near the grazing site because the job requires them to be on call 24 hours a day. But the state labor commission recently ruled that goat herders must be paid like farm workers, which entitles them to overtime and other benefits. Goat companies say that will increase a goat herder's monthly pay from around $4,000 to over $14,000. They say that will drive up the cost of providing goats and will likely put many of them out of business.

They got to be kidding?
I suspect they might butt heads over this with the regulators.
Wait! You're saying California officials are clueless about reality and not sophisticated enough to understand every pro and con of their blunt-object regulations and their unintended effects on a myriad (i.e. thousands upon thousands) of subtly different employment situations?! Say it ain't so, Joe! Didn't Adam Smith or someone like him say that three hundred years ago?
What the Hayek are they thinking?
They say that will drive up the cost of providing goats and will likely put many of them out of business.

$5,000 a month is $60,000 a year. That's more than a living wage, and a very good wage for a semi-skilled job. The state wants goatherders to earn $14,000 a month. That's about twice what most manufacturing engineers make, in my experience.
I suspect the dispute is about how hours and overtime pay are calculated for being on-call 24 hours a day. One can get rich off 24 hours/day at minimum wage plus mandatory overtime multiples, but the goatherds aren't actually working so many hours.
The M2Y Safety Academy is the most broadly recognized Health & Safety Training Institute. We are the Best NEBOSH Institute in Dubai and a provider of quality education in Occupational Health and Safety Management and the International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (NEBOSH IG).
Dubai Dubai do. Or I should say Dubai Dubai don't.
If you're the Best NEBOSH Institute in Dubai, then does that mean there is more than one NEBOSH Institute in Dubai?
And shouldn't you be concerned with the Occupational Safety and Health (not to mention Freedom) of all the slave labor used in the Saudi Peninsula for all those vanity projects of Sheikhs? Hmmm...
Is there anything California can't fuck up?
Naaah.
We serve as an example to other states

At least California does not have a problem with over forestation and resultant wildfires.
"They say that will drive up the cost of providing goats and will likely put many of them out of business."
And then California's government will fund a multimillion, multiyear, study on why goat herding jobs have decreased.
Easy solution:
Step 1: Declare the goats to be "a protected class." Obviously, the goats will be out of work, permanently. And since said "discrimination" would be based solely on their genetic history. This will entitle them to reparations.
Step 2: Have the goats hire the herders and keepers for transportation to their fav "dining areas." The herders can also contract with said goats to provide medical expenses, including vet visits, transportation, and any other necessary services.
The goats, of course, will contract for legal representation by an intelligent pig named Napoleon.
California legislates wildfire damage like no other.
Is there anything that California can't mess up?
Naaah.
The goats will have to curry favor with the regulators.
Goat companies have traditionally paid herders a monthly salary and provided them a place to live near the grazing site because the job requires them to be on call 24 hours a day.
Now why would someone need a goat in the middle of the damn night?
Well, for the record, though I identify as Pansexual, this is not what I had in mind. Actual sapient beings only, not mythical half-Bovidae. 🙂
Keep coming up with puns.
Goat to it.
Goat to it.
Really? You missed 'Goat it'?
How cud ewe?
I have nothing further to satyr you.
The goats may need care at any time. Or they may escape from confinement and need to be caught and brought back.
