A school bus driver for Colorado's Douglas County School District has been charged with 30 misdemeanor counts of child abuse after abruptly stopping his bus, causing the elementary school students onboard to crash into the seats in front of them. Brian Fitzgerald reportedly told school officials he was trying to "control the students" and "educate" them.

I don't know about that. These are some whiny kids unlike I remember. Not to mention the buses I rode had exposed metal everywhere.

An interesting aside is the claimed bleeding injury and/or the window strike. Was that kid in their seat or standing up? Well, impossible to tell, due to all the stupid blurs. But this smells like extreme over-reaction. If the school doesn't like it, just fire him.

When I was in grade school ('70's), we would sometimes plead with our bus driver to "do the bump". When she agreed, if there was time before school started, she would go three blocks out of her way just to hit a certain dip in the road. Those who did not want to participate (girls) would move to the front of the bus, while all the boys would go to the very back and stand. She would then floor it over the dip and we would all go flying. I remember hitting my head on the ceiling and picking myself off the floor more than a few times.

In Raleigh back in the early 1970s, the school buses were driven by students. 16 and 17 year olds who’d do stuff exactly like you describe. There were governors on the bus engines so they couldn’t exceed 30mph, but you can do a lot of mischief at 30mph. Like driving two buses side by side on the old beltline, creating a mile long traffic jam while the kids threw stuff back and forth between the buses.

I grew up on a farm. Driving at only thirty on the roads around there was hazardous. Of course, farmers often had to drive their equipment on the roads, and it generally went even slower - but that stuff was huge and looked pretty solid, while a school bus is likely to crumple up like a fast food wrapper.
