Stanford Seeks the 'Elimination of Harmful Language' Like 'American,' 'Stupid,' and…'Karen'
Their suggested replacement for 'Karen' is far more offensive than the term itself.

Stanford University's IT department created a list of offensive terms and phrases accompanied by alternative recommendations. Until recently, the list was publicly available, but the university's website has made it password-protected after significant criticism.
"The Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative (EHLI) is a multi-phase, multi-year project to address harmful language in IT at Stanford," notes the list. "The goal of (EHLI) is to eliminate many forms of harmful language, including racist, violent, and biased (e.g., disability bias, ethnic bias, ethnic slurs, gender bias, implicit bias, sexual bias) language in Stanford websites and code."
The list, which was recently discovered—and ruthlessly mocked—by The Wall Street Journal will feel familiar to anyone who has ever encountered universities' microaggression reporting protocols. It includes somewhat outdated expressions with problematic racial origins that hardly anyone remembers, like "low man on the totem pole" and "long time no see." It also features many words and phrases that are inoffensive but could possibly be perceived as racial or gendered if you squinted at them long enough: "white paper," "webmaster," etc. The term "American" is disfavored on technical grounds, since not all Americans are denizens of the U.S.
Then there are a bunch of expressions to which the IT department objects because they are too vivid, including "beating a dead horse" and "take a stab at it." I would say that being against these terms is stupid or crazy, but both "stupid" and "crazy" are on the list as well.
The list also includes at least a few terms that were themselves preferred over supposedly more offensive options until very recently. A good example is "survivor," which used to appear as an acceptable substitute for "victim" but is apparently out of fashion: The IT department now prefers "person who has been impacted by." This is a good example of how attempts to make language more politically correct almost always involve making it more cumbersome.
But the list's runaway winner for most baffling inclusion is: "Karen," a term that only recently entered the cultural lexicon. Instead of saying "Karen," the IT department would like people to say "demanding or entitled White woman." (The latter strikes these ears as significantly more derisive, but I am not a Stanford guy, er, person.)
The Wall Street Journal story went viral—as entries in this category tend to—and was widely covered in conservative media. As always, one must note that neither Stanford nor other campuses are forcing students to stop saying these words. It is true, however, that dozens of schools have set up tip lines that explicitly permit students to report each other—and their teachers—for using harmful language. Unsurprisingly, Stanford is among them.

The Stanford IT Department is full of Educated idiots.

So they admit right here that this march isn't going to be short.
It makes no sense to spam me with video junk every single post.
The IT department now prefers "person who has been impacted by." This is a good example of how attempts to make language more politically correct almost always involve making it more cumbersome.
You misspelled "retarded"
elimination of "Stanford" from lexicon much easier
These people are so good to Robby. They are like Trump or Bush for late night comedians. They just create the content for him. All he has to do is transcribe what they are doing. I cannot imagine how they don't see it.....
How about a TOTALLY forbidden 4-letter word these days; "evil"?!?!? Instead of "evil", we MUST now call them "those adhering to alternative forms of ethical compliance". Let each conscious being follow the beat of their own drum, no matter HOW alternative their ethics might be!!! Who are WE to judge Idi Amin, Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Dung, Trump, Putin, Son of Putrump, or Marxist Mammary-Necrophilia-Fuhrer, AKA, Mother's Lament, with a Head of Cement?!??!
>>London in the Nineties may have been ‘sex in the toilets, loads of coke, lap dancing, the lot
@Diane - in the 90s, Saint Louis and Dallas too
They also say to use disabled... Which was replaced as offensive some 50 years ago by the early PC term "handicapped". Of course disabled was the more polite term for cripple before that.
At the last peak PC moment back in the 80s they tried to replace "handicapped" with "handi-capable". That pretty much squished the "replace terms" fad for a brief minute.
Disabled is a term of art by the SSA and most state health agengies and insurance companies.
I thought that calling people "disabled" was problematic, because it implied that being disabled was part of the essence of the person being referred to, and that cripples now prefer being called "persons with disabilities."
(I have yet to hear, however, the traffic reporter warning us about a "vehicle with disabilities" blocking the right-hand lane on Highway 34.)
They got rid of disabled because it implied that people lacked ability. The push at the time was to get people into the workforce. This was during the push for the Americans with disabilities act. That is why the parking spaces mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act are called handicapped spots instead of disabled spots.
There was a whole flurry of PC after that in which terms were officially replaced. Deaf became hearing impaired. Blind became sight impaired. Dwarf became little person.
It was just as dumb then as it is now, but at least there was a veneer of actually enlightening folks.
But in the end, words are just placeholders for ideas. So whatever word you use to represent "stupid person" is going to become a pejorative for being stupid. So it is a fools errand.
crippled, handicapped, handi-capable, disabled these people are never happy, yet we all know they all mean the same thing. As soon as the new label is made someone will call the new label evil, hurtful, or harmful and come up with a new term. Which will last about as long as the old term!

You know who else was offended by "Americans"?
German Nazis and Japanese Imperialists bent on world domination, that's who.
@mad
as usual Rod Serling nailed it 60 years ago. this is the pig-face episode of Twilight Zone but for words
Seems part of a larger movement at Stanford (and other universities):
https://www.palladiummag.com/2022/06/13/stanfords-war-on-social-life/
Since 2013, Stanford’s administration has executed a top-to-bottom destruction of student social life. Driven by a fear of uncontrollable student spontaneity and a desire to enforce equity on campus, a growing administrative bureaucracy has destroyed almost all of Stanford’s distinctive student culture.
What happened at Stanford is a cultural revolution on the scale of a two-mile college campus. In less than a decade, Stanford’s administration eviscerated a hundred years of undergraduate culture and social groups. They ended decades-old traditions. They drove student groups out of their houses. They scraped names off buildings. They went after long-established hubs of student life, like fraternities and cultural theme houses. In place of it all, Stanford erected a homogenous housing system that sorts new students into perfectly equitable groups named with letters and numbers. All social distinction is gone.
And the trees were all kept equal....
By hatchet...
Axe...
And saw......
Even the parties have to be registered now:
https://stanforddaily.com/2022/10/24/inside-stanfords-war-on-fun-tensions-mount-over-universitys-handling-of-social-life/
There were just 45 parties registered on campus during the first four weeks of the fall quarter, compared with 158 in the same period in 2019, according to Student Affairs spokesperson Pat Harris.
We only had one party when I was in college (mid '70s). It was unregistered, and lasted for four years.
How bad is it getting?
Freshmen this year describe wandering campus Friday and Saturday nights in search of an open party or even trekking to San Jose State University in search of social engagement.
The students are having parties, they are not registering them. Fuck the admin.
Speaking as an American greybeard, whoever came up with this list is a fucking retard.

Consider: hidden, mystery box, opaque box, flight recorder
Context: Assigns negative connotations to the color black, racializing the term.
It’s a layered, racist, tech version of the old Rorschach joke:
Hiring Manager: OK, I want you to tell me the first word that pops into your head when you see the following objects: [holds up a literal black box]
Candidate: Nigger.
Hiring Manager: [puts down black box, holds up grey box.]
Candidate: House nigger.
Hiring Manager: [puts down black box, hoists flight recorder colored emergency orange]
Candidate: Plane nigger.
Hiring Manager: I think you might have a problem with racism.
Candidate: Me? You’re the one parading all these niggers around!

Stanford Just Had A Skit During Halftime Called “Gay Chicken” Involving Two Women Getting Married “For Time And All Eternity” And Then Being Told To “Be Fruitful And Multiply And Replenish The Earth.”
Allrighty Then.
I’m Guessing It’s No Coincidence They Did This Against BYU.
They will be leashed, however:
Several BYU fans in attendance Saturday told Universe Sports they found the skit “upsetting” and “rude” for its inclusion of sacred temple themes.
Other fans were confused as to why Stanford administration would allow such a production at halftime when its own football program already has a number of Latter-day Saint ties, as five Cardinal players are Church members and served full-time missions, including highly-touted starting quarterback Tanner McKee. Stanford defensive coordinator Lance Anderson is a returned missionary as well.
“The Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (LSJUMB) has a long history of lighthearted and satirical halftime performances,” a Stanford athletics spokesperson said in a statement to Universe Sports. “Unfortunately, some of the language that was used in Saturday’s halftime show did not reflect Stanford University’s values of religious freedom and diversity, inclusion and belonging. The LSJUMB deeply regrets that this performance caused offense to spectators, and the halftime performance review and approval process is being adjusted to ensure that issues like this do not occur again.”

We should eliminate Stanford. And while we’re at it, let’s be honest. They’re merely a symptom to a much larger problem. As it has become clear that America, and humanity in general, can no longer tolerate the existence elf the democrat party.

I never thought of "Karen's" in racial terms. In past times and in the medium of books and television, the were called Mrs. Grundy, Gladys Kravitz, Aunt Esther, and more generally, just plain Bitch.
Don't forget Mother Jefferson.
Long time no see is racist?
We're all doomed now.
I’m OK with that; the world is full of such women, and they deserve to be named and disparaged.
However, “white” is not a proper noun and shouldn’t be capitalized. If you capitalize “white”, you’re a racist.
I'm American, I'm Crazy...I'm not a Karen, but I am a White woman. If you can capitalize Caucasian, you can capitalize White.
White and Black describe skin color, not ancestry, so if one is capitalized, the other should be, as well. In all actuality, neither of them should be capitalized because, as you stated, neither of them are proper nouns.
They should be capitalized when they refer to identity groups and lower cased when they refer to objective skin color.
A "White" identity group is only recognized by fringe, racist groups. I'm "white", but I am not "White". On the other hand, many people are both "black" and "Black".
"I would say that being against these terms is stupid or crazy, but both "stupid" and "crazy" are on the list as well."
LMAO, Well done, Robby.
We mustn't use the word "slave" - it might offend Slavic people.
We mustn't use the word "bugger" - it might offend Bulgarians.
We mustn't use the term "native American" - it might offend any descendants of the truly first (pre-Clovis) people to arrive in the Americas
We mustn't use the word "substitute" for football/soccer players who come on later in the game as it has negative implications compared to those who start the game. (And ditto for substitute teachers).
We mustn't use the word "bollocks" as an insulting description as it may offend those roughly half of the students who currently or wish to have testicles.
Etc.
The non-paywalled list is here:

@TheReEncogitationer
Oh, trust me, it's not a gender or a racial term, really, even though a *LOT* of white women might make for the most stereotypical examples. A Lot.
There are black male Karens and Jewish Karens and all sorts of diversity of Karens out there.
What puzzles me is the fairly recent idea that using the term 'Karen' to describe a self-important, overly entitled, busybody jerk - was somehow appropriated from (American?) Black culture? People (of all sorts) have been using that term in the restaurant industry for *at least* 20 years.
All this is true, though I have also heard the male equivalent referred to as "Kevins" or "Chads" as well.
One thing is for sure: This personality type is an externality brought out by a Statist, Collectivist society where the private and the public are getting more and more blurred and where The State is a route of first resort for solving trifling problems. "Karens"/"Kevins" would be a very rare and perhaps endangered species in a truly, fully, free and Libertarian society.

How does a lie become truth?
By changing the definition of lie to be truth.
Then, when anything becomes everything, everything becomes nothing and, at the most basic level, all communication becomes meaningless.
This is satanism.
How does a lie become truth?
Usually severe mental illness is involved.
Yes, satanists, Freemasons, liars in general engage in disordered communication.
Dictionaries, as the keepers of meaning, are poor stewards. Changing the meaning of words is for sale.
Dictionaries are merely documenters of how words are used in a society. Dictionaries do not dictate how words are to be used...not in a free society. Only in your Totalitarian world with Ministers of Truth would dictionaries be considered holy writ.
It doesn't take a dictionary to understand this:
Fuck Off, Nazi!
In the US, maybe. In many European nations, dictionaries are prescriptive: you must follow them in teaching and official communications.

It makes me curious to see the course material at Stanford Law School regarding the 1st Amendment.
Stanford is where First Quaker Herbert Hoover went to school. He later formulated the BABBI, Battle Against Beelzebub's Beer Initiative, also known as The Great Depression. Richard Nixon of "Operation Intercept" fame was our second First Quaker famous for violating the First and Second Amendments, and turning the Third into a no-knock roundup of draft dodgers.
The Quakers have nothing to do with Stanford’s current philosophy, you moron, imbecile and idiot.
At this rate, we probably should just eliminate language entirely. Just like guns are to blame for shootings, maybe it's the evil words are to blame for verbal harm not the person speaking them?
Another thought, what if I'm offended by the replacement words or 15 minutes later someone else is.
It sounds like this is not an attempt to prescribe what people at Stanford say when talking to each other, but only what should be said in official University-produced software and websites. If that is the case, then I see no problem with establishing standards for what kind of language should be used there.
"long time no see."
Do not just accept their claimed origin for this phrase.
1. It's not true
2. They don't have the credibility to just accept their announcements as is.
"As always, one must note that neither Stanford nor other campuses are forcing students to stop saying these words. "
*Today*.
" It is true, however, that dozens of schools have set up tip lines that explicitly permit students to report each other—and their teachers—for using harmful language. Unsurprisingly, Stanford is among them."
Oh, is this like how Twitter wasn't colluding with the government because it was all done through private back channels and personal connections?
@Dan S.
It sounds like this is not an attempt to prescribe what people at Stanford say when talking to each other, but only what should be said in official University-produced software and websites.
This is plainly incorrect. Obvious clues as to the falsehood: 'implicit', 'code', and 'eliminate' and referrals to 'If you are unsure in a given situation, ask the person with whom you are interacting.'
It's very clear that this policy doesn't just target external speech, but all speech including internal, *coded* or obfuscated speech, and even the *implications* thereof among any two (or more) people. If the goal is to fix outward-facing speech, it does a shitty job of conveying that.
They may say, "We also are not attempting to address all
informal uses of language." but they sure as hell are addressing informal use of language with the explicit aim of eliminating the targeted speech.
'...Educated at Stanford...' should also be included.
@mad.casual
From the second paragraph:
"The goal of (EHLI) is to eliminate many forms of harmful language, including racist, violent, and biased (e.g., disability bias, ethnic bias, ethnic slurs, gender bias, implicit bias, sexual bias) language in Stanford websites and code." (emphasis added)
That's "code" as in "computer code". This is guidance for the IT department. I'm not sure what you are quoting from, but possibly "interacting" refers to online interactions by IT staffers with others in the Stanford community. If I'm wrong, and it is intended to have wider applicability, then I do condemn that, but I think people are reading more into this than is actually there.

Now what to do about all those HOA Karens? You know who I'm talkin' 'bout.
I think you might have misspelled HOE. 😉
These types might take work, but are not impossible to defeat.
The first thing is let your Realtor or real estate agent know that you want no property with an HOA unless it offers actual services that homeowners really need, like sanitation, landscaping and lawn maintenance, contractor screening and referral, etc. Most homeowners do not need BDSM Masters/Mistresses to provide "organization" to their lives.
@mad.casual
That’s “code” as in “computer code”.
You're being retarded. "Code", especially when juxtaposed with "website", rather explicitly refers to language internal to the computer and the programmer. The very reason it's called "code" is because the symbology is arbitrary. The computer doesn't understand or have any historical conception of what a "brown bag" or "peanut gallery" is.
Setting that aside, the edict, which I cited verbatim for the 'interacting' comment, says, "We also are not attempting to address all
informal uses of language." without *any* mention of formal use or creation/ownership. So, either the guidance is completely retarded and you can't say, "Karen" internally and informally, but you can externally and formally, *or* the assumption is that external and formal communications are controlled and this is an attempt to regulate internal, informal communications (without regard for ownership) and the Stanford is so magnanimous (or just covering their own asses) as to say it doesn't regulate *all* of it.
Even if this were a purely "Muh Privut Korporashun" issue, it's exceedingly oppressive. Just because you choose to pretend it doesn't say what it clearly says (and suggest it says what it distinctly does not say) doesn't make you right. It just demonstrates that you're living in denial.
"As always, one must note that neither Stanford nor other campuses are forcing students to stop saying these words. "
Next sentence
"It is true, however, that dozens of schools have set up tip lines that explicitly permit students to report each other—and their teachers—for using harmful language. Unsurprisingly, Stanford is among them."
So essentially, they are enforcing their language code by proxy.
Do people really give a fuck what these assholes say>
Not giving a fuck, just sad to watch Stanford lose sight of the intellectual freedom that made it a great school.
Interesting list. Much of it is absurd, but much of it is also thought provoking.
What a bunch of Karens
And,as a person of Irish descent, why isn't hooligan and donnybrook
on this list? They are derogatory. And what is wrong with oriental?
I never heard of an asian rug. I guess "chink in the armor "is not acceptable?Let's not be niggardly with this list.
Such words should be beyond the pale.
I'm surprised they didn't include "libtard".
Colleges should have to backstop 50% of any federal student loan. All this woke, diversity karen bullshit will end. tuition will drop, all these useless diversity hires/departments will be let go....
Karen's are the biggest threat to liberty. they whine about being underrepresented but are actually overrepresented today and still whine about needing the rest of us to accept their world. Screw them..marginalized groups are the most privileged and intolerant.
"Person who has been impacted by" for "survivor" isn't just cumbersome, it's inaccurate. If a friend of mine is assaulted, I'm probably a "person who has been impacted by assault", but I'm not an assault survivor, my friend is. Anyway, I thought "victim" was an aspiration these days.
"Survivor" sounds like a spunky female character in a movie - "I will survive!"
Victim sounds like victim.
Fun fact: “Guru” is discouraged, but (sir, this is an IT department) “geek” goes unmentioned.
"The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." -- George Orwell
Glad I'm retired now. I once had a fellow employee accuse me of slander by calling him stupid. But HR ruled that truth is a valid defense of a slander charge.
That's so gay.
Talk about a superiority complex. Who are these people to tell us how to think?
As Buford T. Justice says: You can think about it; just don't do it.
https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/you-cant-say-that-at-stanford/ is a pretty good response. Judson clearly put a lot of work into wordsmithing it.
(And I'm sure someone will find something offensive about the term "wordsmith".)
Wouldn't it be easier to teach students to have thicker skin for real life than being a cry baby wuss needing their diaper changed?
If you wish to indoctrinate them and turn them into government dependent perma-Dem voters, then what they are doing is the right strategy.
Under the 'Gender-Based' category the list identifies balls to the wall as unacceptable and suggests using accelerate efforts because the term "Attributes personality traits to anatomy."
There seem to be varying views on where the term "balls to the wall" originated.
I had always understood it originated from the centrifugal speed governors on steam engines which had two balls on pendulums attached to a rotating vertical shaft which was driven through some gearing mechanism to the driveshaft of the engine. As the engine speed increased, the balls would swing further and further out and, through connections to their respective pendulums, cause a control valve to open/close more based on engine speed. At full speed, the balls would be at their maximum extension or "to the wall".
An alternative explanation that some googling offers is that it originated from the Vietnam war era when the controls in some aircraft had a ball on the top of the control and pushing that control forward, towards the aircraft's firewall, increased the power. At full power the ball was "to the wall".
I've never heard it attributed to anatomy (presumably testicles?) and am hard (oops, am I allowed to use the word "hard"?) pressed to imagine what "testicles to the wall" would mean. I suppose it could refer to some sort of POW torture involving nails, hammers, walls, and testicles but that seems like a (painful) stretch. Perhaps there are some usages associated with BSDM that I've missed (which would not be surprising)?
It seems like Stanford "offense police" may be looking too hard for offense. Perhaps this is rather like the controversy, perhaps most memorably when the mayor of Washington used it over 20 years ago when referring to an item in the city budget, over the use of the word "niggardly" which, of course, has nothing to do with the slang term "nigger".
As well, "balls to the wall" refers to a state, not an objective. "We are balls to the wall on this project" means we are working on it with full power and the suggested "We are 'accelerate efforts' on this project" is nonsensical.
Rational Americans Seeks the ‘Elimination of Harmful Universities” Like Stanford
Why don't they just teach the students to have thicker skin instead of having them carry diaper changes in their backpacks?
