Why Do Democrats Keep Backing the Trumpiest Candidate?
In Maryland, the Democratic Governors Association spent more than seven figures boosting the same candidate favored by former President Trump.

Yesterday was Maryland's primary election day. The winner of the Republican gubernatorial primary was supported by both former President Donald Trump and the Democratic Governors Association. Why is that?
For not the first time this election season, Democrats decided to put their collective thumbs on the scale to encourage Republican voters to pick the most extreme candidate. They believe that having Democrats tilt GOP primaries toward bad candidates will ultimately help Democratic candidates once general elections roll around.
Democrats may be right about this, but they are playing with fire by undermining good Republican candidates.
Despite overwhelming popularity, Maryland Republican Governor Larry Hogan is term-limited and unable to run again. A moderate Republican in a largely Democratic-leaning state, Hogan endorsed Kelly Schulz, another moderate Republican and the former head of the state's respective labor and commerce departments. But on election night, Schulz was defeated soundly by Maryland Delegate Dan Cox, who was endorsed by Trump (he called Cox "MAGA all the way") and the Democratic Governors Association (DGA).
In Pennsylvania, Democratic nominee Josh Shapiro ran ads boosting Republican candidate Doug Mastriano, a state senator who insists the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Mastriano ultimately won the nomination, and now has a fighting chance of winning not just the governorship, but the power to hand-pick a secretary of state who may throw the 2024 election into chaos.
Backing extreme Republicans doesn't just carry a potential future cost, it's expensive in the moment. Earlier this month, the DGA spent $1.2 million on an ad targeting Cox, more than twice what Cox had raised to that point. The ad highlighted Trump's endorsement, and claimed Cox was "fighting to end abortion in Maryland" and "will protect the Second Amendment at all costs, refusing to support any federal restrictions on guns, even pushing to put armed guards in every school."
While likely horrifying Democrats, the ad goosed Cox's prospects among Republicans: He ultimately beat Schulz by more than 15 percentage points. Like Mastriano, Cox participated in the January 6 Capitol riot, busing people to Washington ahead of time and tweeting "[Vice President Mike] Pence is a traitor" after protesters had already breached the building.
Compared to Schulz, Democrats clearly see Cox as an easier opponent in the general election. They may be right: As opposed to the swing state of Pennsylvania, Maryland leans Democratic by 26 points over the national average. But in an election year expected to be highly favorable to Republicans, it's worth wondering why Democrats would elevate a candidate that other Maryland Republicans call "unstable," "unfit for office," and "a Q-anon whack job."

"Why Do Democrats Keep Backing the Trumpiest Candidate?"
Rhetorical question, right?
I without a doubt have made $18k inside a calendar month thru operating clean jobs from a laptop. As I had misplaced my ultimate business, I changed into so disenchanted and thank God I searched this easy task (neh-10) accomplishing this I'm equipped to reap thousand of bucks simply from my home. You know who else was goosed by the left?
Every big-haired intern who worked in the Clinton white house?
Hey, what about in the Kennedy White House?
Gabby?
Too clever by half?
Short memories?
Misreading the room?
Am I getting close?
They key is that line "now has a fighting chance of winning not just the governorship, but the power to hand-pick a secretary of state who may throw the 2024 election into chaos".
TDS now and forever!
It takes a heavy dose of special pleading to write "secretary of state who may throw the 2024 election into chaos" with a straight face.
Lol. Pre 2020 voting rules were literal chaos! We just didn’t know it until wuflu came along!
Democrats tried this several times in the past in California. Don't know why, a Republican nominee can't win a partisan race in this state. The practice stopped with top two open primaries, a tarnished silver lining to a shitty law.
Get the worst Republican nominated so the mediocre Democrat can win. Sleazy.
"Get the worst Republican nominated so the mediocre Democrat can win."
That was openly Hillary's plan. Glad it worked out so well for her
The same strategy worked out ok for Hillary.
It absolutely did.
Did you know Hillary Clinton got more total votes than any white male candidate in history?
#StillWithHer
She was popular. That's for sure.
Did you know that population growth is represented by an exponential function? That the current population of Earth is twice what it was when Richard Nixon rigged the IRS to subsidize The looter Kleptocracy?
Um, yeah hank, I think he knows that.
Because they do not care what damage they do to the standards of representative democracy as long as they think they can win easier. Either they do not think Trump candidates are a danger to everything they hold dear, or they are reckless as hell.
If the.money can be reached back to a Democrat candidate, how should that not be used against that candidate? Especially when they rain anathema on that GOP candidate in the general? How do you give money to someone and call them hateful later on and retain any credibility?
I mean the ads write themselves.
"Vote for MAGA Man. The Democratic Governors Alliance has supported him to the tune of $4 Million. That's more than they spent on Joe Bob's primary! If they are willing to spend more on MAGA MAN than their own candidate, consider that endorsement"
Seriously. The Maryland Republicans should go with that.
Yeah, but they aren't the Stupid Party for nothing.
You're both right that the ads should write themselves--"Vote for MAGA Mike! Even radical left Democrats think he'd do a great job!"
MAGA McGee: The only candidate running with bipartisan support.
It doesn't matter what a large political party really wants, it's what their leadership wants. Rank and file Democrats would probably oppose this strategy, but it's to the advantage of the leadership of each party to have both parties' candidates be extremists — and to have the opposing party's extremists win election sometimes, so they can rile up their own party's base.
Large organizations suck. Their leaders succeed by failing, fail by succeeding.
Their only motivation is to retain power. Whether that means changing voting regulations, legally or illegally, kicking the green party off ballots, seeking to kick the GOP off ballots over bad legal claims of insurrection, or trying to ruin other parties internal elections.
They don't care.
In Pennsylvania, Democratic nominee Josh Shapiro ran ads boosting Republican candidate Doug Mastriano, a state senator who insists the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
I don't live in PA, but I worked with a guy named Josh Shapiro. Out of principle, I would never vote for anyone with that name.
I do live in PA, and near Philly. The 'they stole the election!' mostly elicits a 'Duh.' When you get 102.1% turnout in a Philly district with 0 (R) votes, and if you are students of human nature, how often have 20k people actually 1) agreed 2) indicated it without error 3) not had some wise guy f'ing it up?
"how often have 20k people actually 1) agreed 2) indicated it without error 3) not had some wise guy f'ing it up?"
The most common response I have seen is "well Trump was just THAT bad and people wanted him out."
Yes, but that same logic for Joe Biden's vote totals stands for Kim Jong Un. Democrats for totalitarian dictators.
That theory fails to account for the very significant improvement in Trump's 2020 performance vs 2016. It simply relies on you not thinking about it.
The truth is that Trump probably won by a massive amount among legitimately cast votes, but The Powers That Be manufactured enough ballots to cast themselves that they needed to come up with a ludicrously high performance for Biden, making the illegitimacy obvious to anyone with the slightest bit of honesty and intelligence.
Live in denial all you want, there's no going back from here. It's over, and horrors lie ahead.
Or that Dole, McCain (spit) & Romney did barely if any better at all.
I used to live near Philly, in Delaware County - First in Yeadon, then Lansdowne.
Ah, I live in MontCo (King of Prussia).
I am shocked, SHOCKED!! at the suggestion that a party of force-initiating looters would stoop to election dishonesty. Somebody tell me it ain't so...
I'm waiting...
Helloooo?
Relax hank. They’re just trying to defeat the girl bulliers, so it’s cool.
Mastriano ultimately won the nomination, and now has a fighting chance of winning not just the governorship, but the power to hand-pick a secretary of state who may throw the 2024 election into chaos.
But Tom Wolf didn't do anything illegal in the 2020 election, right?

When Trump backed him he was good and now that Democrats back him he's bad.
Judge the source. What they back doesn't matter.
Oh c'mon. You really have to ask this question?
It's because Democrats, like Republicans, want to rig the system in their favor. The only type of Republican that can win in a place like Maryland is a moderate like Hogan. So Democrats are trying to promote the most extreme Republican so that their team looks sane by comparison.
yup and Brandybuck beat me to it
They believe that having Democrats tilt GOP primaries toward bad candidates will ultimately help Democratic candidates once general elections roll around.
So you answer your own stupid pure-clickbait headline question in the first 2 paragraphs. Incorrectly. They do it because they are apparatchiks who no longer bother to conceal their Marxist tactics because they openly acknowledge their goal of corrupting democracy to dismantle capitalism. Welcome to Eastern Europe in the 1950s. It took them 75 years, but they always knew they would get there eventually.
Joe Lancaster, you are a worthless douchebag.
Correct.
Democrats have so many campaign contributions sitting around they can afford to run ads for their weaker opponents. And then they complain about all the rich folks giving money to Republicans.
You really haven't figured this out... really.
So, you mean that Democrats will do anything for political advantage, including claiming that Republicans will do anything for political advantage?
Democrats can run on their record, or run against Trump.
Which do you think they prefer?
The only part of Maryland that is left leaning is the trash city Baltimore that is infested with the DC scum
Montgomery County too, at least.
PG & Arundel can't be much better.
I still can't get over the pessimistic and cynical approach to politics the left is trying with this strategy of getting terrible Repub candidates elected in order to be able to beat them.
It's such an acknowledgement of how bad your team is when you have to purposefully eliminate your opponent's best players. And it's just more of our societal race to the bottom.
The worst part about it, is that it appears to have worked at times. And that means more and more will attempt this strategy now.
Theyve been doing this for decades though.
I still can't get over the pessimistic and cynical approach to politics the left is trying with this strategy of getting terrible Repub candidates elected in order to be able to beat them.
Have you forgotten Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos"?
Have I forgotten a talk show host's entertainment stunt? Yeah. A stunt by an entertainer is lightyears different than actual party apparatuses engaging in such actions.
Nice whatabout attempt though, it was almost a good deflection.
Because they are retarded and think that nationalism is a loser in a country founded on patriotism.
2016 should have made them think twice, but the real stupid party is the one doing the same thing over again and expecting different results.
So the alternatives are collectivism and collectivism, like Germany in 1933. Makes sense... now that the LP has been neutered.
The answer is spoiler votes. Dems lost in 2016 for the same reason God's Own Populists got beaten in the popular vote--4M pro-choice, pro-repeal votes for Gary Johnson and Weld. Republicans still want Army of God snipers to murder birth control doctors--and clumsy coathanger midwives to kill off uppity feminists, mostly Dems anyway. The LP's 1980 betrayal of women alienated female support to the Dems. But now that the ku-klux Tea party has replaced the previous anarcho-communist infiltrators, the Kleptocracy can safely ignore the LP.
Tell us about LP's 1980 betrayal of women.
>>Cox participated in the January 6 Capitol riot ...
manning the .50cal mounted atop that 2003 vw beetle
What does this blogger think is good about moderate Republican candidates?
Or is it like P.J. O'Rourke said, bad within normal limits?
The democrat party elites believe that they can game our elections. They fail to notice that the citizens know that the democrat party elites are attempting to game our elections. Citizens despise politicians who think so little of them, consider the citizens to be ignorant rubes that can have the wool pulled over their eyes.
Most citizens want politicians who speak truth, do what they say they will instead of a bait and switch. Citizens are more willing to accept a honest politician who only alights with their view 80% of the time than a lying posing politician who claims to alight with their views 10% of the time before the election and 50% of the time afterwards.
"Why Do Democrats Keep Backing the Trumpiest Candidate?"
Because they're stupid.
They pushed Trump at the beginning because they thought Hillary could beat him easily.
They laughed at Ann Coulter when she said that he was going to win.
And then they started to get worried. But it was too late.
They spent the next 4 years setting up 2020. And couldn't hide their obvious 'fortification'.....so they bragged about it.
But come election time again, they revert. They completely forget how many times this tactic has bitten them on the ass. Particularly when they brag about it.
This practice is wrong. As far back as George Washington the American people were warned about political parties. Practices like supporting your weakest opponent is both dangerous and cynical. It speaks to need to win for power rather than winning for the best policies.
If the Democrats lose to any of these losers, the Democrats should not be allowed to forget what they did.
Um, if they actually win, how exactly are they "losers"? You seem to be suffering from the same mental / psychological condition as the Democratic Governors Association.
Pro tip: Mike Pence is, in fact, a traitor. God willing some Good American, (or a convenient cancer,) rectifies his continued existence some day, (in monecraft, of course.)
In minecraft. Curse Reason for not having an edit button. Even if it were only active for a minute or two it would improve the site greatly.
The Democrats have convinced themselves because they hate Trump the majority of citizens do. You hear idiots like Schiff saying things like the GOP is now giving up on Trump. This in the face of ever poll that says Trump is currently the most popular politician in America today. It is a strategy bound to fail, it is election interference, but they still have their fall back, cheating.
