Someone Placed a Record-Setting Super Bowl Bet From His Phone

But he still had to drive two hours to do it in a legal state.

An estimated 31.4 million people will place a bet on the Super Bowl. Most of them won't drive two hours just to place that bet. And most of them won't lay down bets totaling $9.5 million.

That's how much mattress mogul Jim McIngvale bet on the Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl. If they pull it off as the underdogs, he'll get a profit of $16.15 million. McIngvale started with a bet of $4.5 million with Caesars Sportsbook, which said it was the largest bet to ever be placed from the convenience of a mobile phone. When he placed another $5 million bet on the Bengals, Caesars said it was the largest legal wager in U.S. history, beating out a $4.9 million bet on the heavily favored St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI (they lost to a young upstart quarterback named Tom Brady).

McIngvale is fortunate he didn't have to go all the way to Las Vegas to place the bet, as he would have had to do before 2018, when the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. But the Supreme Court didn't legalize sports betting nationwide, it simply said Congress couldn't ban states from legalizing it.

That's why McIngvale still had to drive two hours from Houston to cross the Louisiana border. Despite its reputation as a do-as-you-please, leave-us-alone state, Texans have not been allowed to gamble as they please and any sportsbooks or casino operators trying to enter the state will not be left alone.

In Louisiana, legal sports betting on mobile devices finally launched in the last few weeks. Before then, McIngvale would have probably just gotten on a plane to Las Vegas (where he still would have had to register in person at a casino before placing a bet on his phone), because the alternatives were driving to a Mississippi casino or driving over the Tennessee border if he still wanted to place the record-setting mobile bet.

Nationwide, PlayUSA (a sports betting news and analysis website) estimates that $1 billion will be wagered legally on the Super Bowl. But that's only a fraction of the $7.6 billion that the American Gaming Association estimates will be wagered legally and illegally (though the vast difference may come from different methodologies). Less than half of the U.S. population lives in states with convenient mobile sports betting offered by multiple providers.

Texas doesn't have legalized sports betting, but clearly that doesn't mean people won't find a way to bet. In addition to casual bets between friends, dedicated bettors can try to find an illegal bookie or place a bet with an offshore sportsbook. They can also follow McIngvale's lead and simply travel to a state with legalized betting.

Or maybe Texas should just let Texans do as they please and let sportsbooks start operating in person and online.

While the truck convoy protests have been violence free with BBQ and bouncy castles... Democrats once again take to destroying buildings in protest.

Never happened. Any property damage during Antifa / BLM demonstrations must have been the work of rightwing infiltrators.

Yes, the motives were the same in each case - to destroy American democracy.

They didn't, they were protesting it's destruction. But let's pretend you were right about their motives for a second.

Comparing a group who were let into the building by cops, broke two windows, sat in Pelosi's chair took some selfies, one was shot and another was beaten to death by cop, with men who deliberately flew four commercial airliners full of people into three buildings full of people, is psychotic even for you.

Never mind the fact that you and your bosses turned out to have lied about Sicknick's death, bringing zipties, smearing poo, having guns and molotov cocktails at the Capitol building, etc. just to make their Reichstag Fire seem worse.

              You're truly a moral monster.

Fantasy football, daily fantasy leagues, and square grid office pools were ultimately ways people found around the restrictions on sports betting.

Las Vegas knows it, too, which is why offering daily fantasy football leagues is legal in 44 states, it's against the law in Nevada. The state doesn't want others competing with the taxpaying casinos for the local gamblers' business. There are legal brothels in Nevada, but you can't play in a daily fantasy football league!

"The Nevada Gaming Control Board (GCB) and the state Attorney General declared that [daily fantasy league sites like DraftKings and FanDuel] were operating illegally within the state because they had yet to register themselves with the GCB and procure a license. This prompted DFS operators to withdraw from Nevada, which they have continued to do so ever since.

    https://www.online-gambling.com/us/nevada/daily-fantasy/

Whether we're talking about legal marijuana, alcohol sales, or gambling, the consistent factor is the local authorities finding a way to get paid. And once the local authorities are getting paid, they start working to protect these markets from outside competition.

It's the same thing with everything.

I've seen it happen with restaurants, where the other restaurant owners in a town will fight a new restaurant opening at every step and then call in code violations that are poorly described and weren't understood by the building contractors and the space planners. One does not simply walk into Mordor and open a restaurant. You can sell alcohol in Utah, but from the government's perspective, it's always, "What's in it for me?"

Government is the solution to a very few problems at most.

    1. CE   3 years ago

And if they can't stop a new restaurant, they will try to stop it getting a liquor license so it won't be as profitable and fewer people will go there. I know one restaurant owner who would give customers a free beer for being his guest. Since he wasn't selling it, he didn't need a license.

"Mattress Mac", as we in Houston call him, has a huge furniture store here. He's a local legend, and does really cool social charity things and helps a lot of people. Plus, he's sweet and warm and cuddly, and it's amazing how much people love our local furniture hawker.

Anyway, he always makes these huge bets. He generally does as part of a marketing campaign. He tells people, buy over two thousand dollars on a very expensive mattress, and if the Bengals, or whoever, win, your stuff is free. If I understand it correctly, he bets in the opposite direction. So I think he's covered regardless. I don't fully understand it.

    1. Sarah Palin's Buttplug 2   3 years ago

Yeah, it is just a clever hedge. The $16 million he would win covers the cost of the "free" mattresses.

Anyone that needs a mattress buys one and pulls for the Bengals to win straight up (no line).

I don't have a lot of sympathy for a guy who has the strings and buttons to pull off a multi-million dollar bet because he has to drive 2 hours... or get on a plane for that matter.

Nor do I have a problem with a state that hasn't opened up legalized gambling. If enough people don't like it, they will change it. Don't like the laws there, don't move there.

Fuck that, the state government has no more business telling me if I can gamble then the feds do.

Was at the gym this morning and apparently the only news is trump flushing papers down a toilet which is so nonsensical as to not be believed. Everything he receives is printed. There are digital copies.

Yet the news has completely ignored theater lut of Durham about Hillary manufacturing trump russia including seemingly trying to hack into servers to create the impression.

    1. Sarah Palin's Buttplug 2   3 years ago

Durham has no credibility, that is why. He is just Kenneth Starr rewarmed.

Trump has destroyed records in violation of current law.

As president, Trump made a habit of tearing up White House records, and the National Archives has said that it received some documents that had been taped back together and others that remained in tatters.

When he left office, Trump took some records to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where they were recently retrieved by the National Archives. White House call logs from Jan. 6 do not show any calls to or from Trump during the assault on the Capitol, despite public reporting that he spoke to lawmakers while it was under way, a source familiar with the records confirmed to NBC News.

When we see these things play out in Canada, they really can help us gain perspective on our own country--and there's an interesting story playing our right now about conspiracy theories and "misinformation". Long before Trump, Reason's Jesse Walker wrote a book about conspiracy theories, showing that while conspiracy theories (or "misinformation") often tell us little about what's really happening in the world and why, they can tell us a lot about the people who pass them around.

When the Democrats were trying to remove Trump from office because of a conspiracy theory surrounding his supposed collaboration with the Russians, the story had little or nothing to do with what actually happened between Trump and the Russians in the real world. That conspiracy told us a lot, however, about the state of mind of the Democrats and their unwillingness to accept Trump's legitimate victory and support among average Americans in the Midwest. The progressives, in particular, weren't willing to accept what average Americans in the Midwest thought about them at all.

During the Obama presidency, plenty of Americans passed around a theory that Barack Obama wasn't really an American citizen--and was, therefore, ineligible to hold the office of president. Whether he was really born in Hawaii or somewhere else wasn't anywhere near as interesting as the fact that people came to question the loyalty of the American president to the United States. Obama's behavior (from the Paris Accords, to Wall Street, to his deal with the Iranians, etc., etc.), seemed to favor foreign interests and others at the expense of the United States and the American people. Trump had a field day after that with "America first".

I couldn't help but see the same kind of thing happening with Trudeau in Canada while I was reading this today:

"Misinformation has been a key weapon wielded by Canada’s protest movement, and critics of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have returned to one simmering falsehood: that Mr. Trudeau is the love child of the former Cuban leader Fidel Castro."

----The New York Times, February 12, 2022
    ,
    https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/02/12/world/canada-protest-trudeau#justin-trudeau-fidel-castro

    LOL

Trudeau's mother was a highly publicized party animal, and Castro was a big hero to the leftists of her generation. She may have met with Castro on numerous occasions. Ultimately, however, the interesting story isn't about whether Justin Trudeau is actually Castro's love child. The interesting story is that an increasing number of Canadians are starting to believe that Trudeau is being driven by the concerns of the far left--to the determent of Canada--and he's willing to use Castro-like, authoritarian means to inflict his radical leftist agenda on average Canadians.

Forcibly moving the truckers will play into that, and as the conspiracy theory to cover up Justin Trudeau's true parentage grows, it will probably track his willingness to use the coercive power of the state to inflict himself on the unwilling--as well as the unwillingness of the Canadian people to be subjected to his rule. It's easy to see this happening from an American perspective because none of it is biased by Trump Derangement Syndrome. The Canadians who read the news in the U.S. for a perspective free of Canadians biases are smart. More of us Americans show do the same to get more of an objective perspective. Neither "misinformation" nor conspiracy theories and neither populism nor progressivism are unique to the United States.

    1. OpenBordersLiberal-tarian   3 years ago

See, this is why you provide such a valuable service. If not for you, I might actually be tempted to believe anti-Biden disinformation by wingnut.com operations like "CNN." Take this recent pile of nonsense: CNN Poll: Most Biden detractors say he's done nothing they like since becoming president

"The President's ratings have fallen across the board, the survey found. Just 41% approved of the way he's handling his job while 58% disapproved, a significant drop from his approval numbers in CNN polling last year ... Overall, Americans said, 57% to 41%, that the first year of the Biden administration has been more of a failure than a success ... Over the past two months, the twin challenges of widespread inflation and a deluge of coronavirus cases due to the Omicron variant appear to have hit Biden's ratings hard: His approval rating for handling the economy has dipped 8 points to 37% since early December, while his ratings for handling coronavirus have dropped 9 points to 45%."

But I know none of that is accurate. Because you're here literally every day doing your aggressive #DefendBidenAtAllCosts routine. You've instructed us to concentrate on the really important metrics like rig count. And the Warren Buffett Net Worth Index. Biden is doing a fantastic job by these standards, so all the mediocre polls must be Russian lies.

The Special Counsel investigating wrongdoing that led to Russiagate, John Durham, filed a document accusing the Clinton campaign of paying tech operatives to spy on Trump campaign, then Admin, servers. See if you can find liberal outlets covering this.

Durham's filing is here. The accusations shouldn't be taken as truth yet. He says he will prove them at trial. But the way liberal outlets completely ignore this shows the bubble in which liberals live: they just have no idea about any of this:

This is part of the criminal case against Hillary's lawyer, Michael Sussman. He fed FBI, then CIA, the fabricated Alfa Bank story, and is accused of lying when telling FBI he wasn't representing any client. Question is whether this is leading to a broader conspiracy case.

The NYT/CNN/NBC axis flooded the zone every time Robert Mueller scratched his nose. They spent hours and hours deciphering his every sneeze. Actual criminal indictments from Durham of Hillary's lawyer or FBI operatives -- crimes that created Russiagate -- barely merit an article.

The two journalists who primarily promoted the Alfa Bank/Trump fraud -- @NatashaBertrand and @FranklinFoer -- were promoted. Both were hired by supreme Iraq War liar @JeffreyGoldberg, now editor of @TheAtlantic.

**This** -- not FB, Rogan, QAnon -- is the hive of disinformation.

Watch current Oscar nominee @DavidSirota talk to @KrystalBall and @esaagar about how the most frequent and destructive sources of disinformation are the largest media corporations that pretend to fight it:

Among the reason the media might want to cover the developments in John Durham's criminal probe of the fraudulent Alfa Bank story and the crimes committed to spread it: the Clinton 2016 official at the heart of it is now Biden's National Security Advisor in charge of Ukraine.

    Cultist de-programmed!

Keith Scott says January 6, 2021, was "the greatest day" of his life.

The 49-year-old had arrived in Washington, DC, as a member of the "Stop the Steal" movement, which believes former President Donald Trump's lies that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and marched to the US Capitol with them.
"I felt like a patriot that was standing beside our Founding Fathers speaking up against King George," Scott told CNN in an interview on the one-year anniversary of the insurrection.
A year on, Scott is blunt about the movement he was a part of, calling it a cult. His story is complicated -- he still believes much of the "Stop the Steal" propaganda, for example -- but his journey is illustrative of how Americans like him, who said he had never attended a Donald Trump rally, get caught up in a movement based on misinformation and how it takes over their lives.

Based on the One Way Valveification theory of masking, the guy behind the mic is protecting her, but she's trying to kill him.

Because remember, his mask protects her, but his mask doesn't protect him.

      4. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

Right, because if you're double vaxxed but have (correctly) pointed out that the policies this country put in place were not only entirely unscientific, and entirely ineffective and are now being proven so by a quietly re-shuffling elite, then you're "anti vax".

Oh, and according to the Duplicitous Ken Doll, umm, an anti-semite, a racist, a misogynist and several other words he had to look up in a dictionary before he recorded his message from a secret bunker in another country.

            Yes, entirely. Mendacious much?

          2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

Well, off the top of my head, surgical masks don't work, cloth masks are nothing more than 'facial decorations'. The 6ft social distancing rule was completely arbitrary. We're one of the only countries in the world that doesn't recognize natural immunity as 'protected'. The lockdowns didn't make much difference although the data we have makes it difficult to tell. Masking and forcing children into remote learning did far more damage than it mitigated-- if it mitigated any at all.

Those are all the policy decisions. Don't get me started on just the observational science that DROVE the polices that was wrong. The vaccine is 100% effective. Whoops, no it's not (see dropping effectiveness as real-world data case in). "We can vaccinate our way to zero covid". Yeah. Fauci's constantly shifting statements on 'herd immunity' which he later admitted he lied about. The death count and all the accounting fraud that's taken place, the depths of which may never be known. The Lab Leak theory, and so on and so on.

I mean, I can go on, would you like me to?

The only thing that's true is the virus exists, it's particularly deadly to the old and infirm, or people with poorly managed co-morbidities. With the population at large, it's highly survivable (>99%), and its danger is nearly statistically insignificant to young children. Oh, and the vaccine is effective in that we have very good data that shows it mitigates the worst effects of the disease, but natural immunity is better and longer lasting.

One positive indication: many of these people are so scared they are deciding not to have kids. With any luck, the paranoid genes will diminish in the human pool.

You want to know how dumb people are? This is how dumb:

kids in school during the pandemic has been tough. In WA, at least 29,000 can’t be found.

"Disengagement isn't a new problem, but this is a different kind of magnitude," said a state education official. With thousands of kids not enrolled anywhere, some people are trying to find out where they have gone.

I bet sex-trafficked for the super bowl.

  26. Ken Shultz   3 years ago

I just heard about Trudeau's comment about the truckers holding "unacceptable views".

That's the dumbest misstep since Hillary Clinton referred to Trump supporters as "deplorables"--except Hillary Clinton didn't subsequently arrest peaceful protesters. So, at least she couldn't be accused of actually arresting people for holding "unacceptable views".

Out Canadian commenters here, help us understand the likelihood of a no-confidence vote and Trudeau surviving it. Trudeau was already leading a minority government. and under these circumstances, isn't it likely that Trudeau's minority partners are likely to benefit in a new election at the Liberals' expense?

Maybe they think being a junior partner in a governing coalition is better than being the senior partner in the opposition coalition? Help us understand. The Canadian PM is arguably arresting people for having "unacceptable views", and there's no confidence vote?

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

Dude, he went way further than that. He literally called them all racists and misogynists.

      1. Ken Shultz   3 years ago

Arresting people because of their views is something else entirely.

        1. Cyto   3 years ago

That was the point of calling them racist, white supremacists and terrorists who are homophobic and misogynistic. Gotta dehumanize them before you start mass arrests and other illegal actions ,(like stealing millions of dollars in donations, depriving citizens of food and shelter, etc)

In a French-language TV interview during last fall’s unnecessary snap election, Trudeau said the following: “They are extremists who don’t believe in science, they’re often misogynists, also often racists. It’s a small group that muscles in, and we have to make a choice in terms of leaders, in terms of the country. Do we tolerate these people?”

That was one of the more difficult to believe missed calls... There are only 2 people anywhere near the actions, and at least 2 officials should have been primarily focused on that play. It isn't like it was subtle.

There are actual human beings working at the Wuhan Lab. Good article with interviews of scientists at the lab:

    https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/02/09/1044985/shi-zhengli-covid-lab-leak-wuhan/

“The two viruses may be related, but they sit on different evolutionary branches that diverged half a century ago…”

    1. Cyto   3 years ago

All of which might have been useful 2 years ago.

But there was a Chinese team investigating and reporting on this back then. They had very different conclusions. And they were silenced.

And then there was a belated investigation (after the official story was enshrined with zero evidence).

Except the belated investigation was run by the people who stood to benefit most from whitewashing the whole thing. And apparently some key data and samples were also disappeared.

So now, 2 years too late, and after a raft of lies ( even if they accidentally aligned with the truth, they were lying in that they at a minimum did not know the truth).... Now we have a new official story.

Claiming that one strain used at the lab is different from the strain we see circulating is not a debunk of the lab leak hypothesis in any way.

If you don't want people to doubt your story, start by not waiting 2 years and not trying multiple fake stories first.

BREAKING: GiveSendGo, the crowdfunding website used by the Freedom Convoy, is now redirecting to the domain GiveSendGone[.]wtf.

A video from the Disney film Frozen now appears alongside a manifesto condemning the website and the Freedom Convoy.

An S3 bucket run by GiveSendGo was found to be leaking pics of drivers licenses, military IDs, passports, & other sensitive docs just days ago.

Source tells me that despite an attempted fix, the bucket was exploited again to allow the takeover of the site

GiveSendGo appears to have fixed the issue that redirected visitors to a website set up by hackers.

The hackers' domain at GiveSendGone[.]wtf also appears to be down.

The leaked data appears to include email addresses, IP addresses, zip codes, as well as names (although some users could have used fake names).

Honestly, I'm so jealous of this man. He has to be so lucky! I have generally good betting results, especially everything improved after I found a site https://takebet.ke/ where I read forecasts, tips and choose sites for betting. Nevertheless, I haven't yet had any stunning results in terms of money. But I don't despair and continue to work.
