Brickbat: Electrifying News

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he supports a bill that would require electric car chargers to be installed in all new buildings and all buildings that are being renovated, including homes, starting next year. The bill is part of the government's efforts to ban the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines starting in 2030.

I still think that deadline shows a lack of commitment. After all, Britain has been suffering under Siberian conditions since the end of 2019. They really should have insisted that any new car sold in the UK be electric by 2022. Now, not long after this particular cunt is out of office. Let Johnson take full credit for his massive climate victory while he's still in charge. I can't imagine there would be much resistance.

So who’s gonna pay for all these chargers? Please send invoices to Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Vote for environmentalists, even with your dollars, get fascism.
The idea that EVs are greener or more sustainable is a lie. The idea that if they reach some arbitrary level of market penetration they'll magically become more sustainable is a lie. The idea that they are greener or more sustainable if we convert wholly to nuclear power or some combination of nuclear and solar/wind is a lie. They are as much a talisman or foot in the door of government control as the vaccines are.
Other automakers aren't clamoring to emulate Tesla because of Tesla's inflated P/E ratio, they're clamoring to emulate Tesla because world leaders are banning ICEs, blocking the construction of oil lines and mandating that every home have a supercharger. I wouldn't hold any of it against Musk if he just wanted to sell cars, but through both his words and actions, he doesn't. He wants to save the planet. Porsche made really popular cars too.
It's not a lie. There are all kinds of accounting methods that can be employed to show they're sustainable.
Accounting methods that support a lie? Kind of like the 'Build Back Better' $1.5T spending that pays for itself (insert accounting method; FORCE citizens to pay more)...
There’s three kind of lies - lies, damned lies, and accounting?
So long as the popularity numbers exist to make the accounting remotely believable, which makes it totally different than every. single. other. socialist scam in all of history.
IMHO, EVs are less climate friendly an economical. You can tell by the fact they cost a lot more, in spite of tax benefits and a bunch of government subsidies, and the free market has to be compromised to make them exist.
The free market provides far better than government manipulated markets which only waste our resources.
They cost more because of unnecessary gadgets and subsidies.
Gadgets help with distinguishing products in the marketplace, but they add cost. As long as the marketplace is primarily consumers with excess wealth, there’s not much that can be done. But as EVs gain market share over IcEs, some gadgets will be removed, to appeal to a no-frills consumer.
For now, gadgets are present and raise costs.
Subsidies increase costs, because they reduce natural market pressure to limit price. Always.
EV's cost about $10,000 more than an equivalent ICE car. The extra cost is mainly due to the cost of the battery.
EV makers focus on luxury cars, and their extra gadgets, for three reasons.
1-Luxery cars = more profit
2-An extra $10,000 is less noticeable on a $90,000 car than a $20,000 car.
3-Only the wealthy can afford an extra $10,000 to virtue signal to their friends how environmentally friendly they are.
"He wants to save the planet."
I wouldn't bet on that either. Half of his companies are scams and/or vaporware (Hyperloop anyone?).
No, Musk is a conman and a rent seeker.
Sometimes it takes a conman to get things done.
This is nothing but a government handout to the rich.
After all, new, expensive electric cars are predominantly bought by the wealthy.
The lower and working classes will continue to be reliant on older, petrol models that they will have to continue to maintain, since new cars are now even more expensive.
It will also prevent the lower classes with a petrol vehicle from legally remodeling their home without incurring significant unwanted expense. So, even more people will be forced to rennovate without proper licenses, which allows unsafe practices to thrive.
What qualifies as a renovation anyway? If someone updates their kitchen or bathroom, they won’t have to install a charging outlet, I’d hope. And what about redoing a deck in the backyard? Would they make you put in an outlet even if the driveway doesn’t go around the back?
My county has it on the books that repairing skirting on a mobile home qualifies as renovation triggering a up-to-code requirement.
You couldn't imagine how many people unaware of that Gov-God B.S. trick goes out to fix the skirting on their home and ends up homeless (as no mobile home older than 5-years meets today's code requirements).
In the end; what it really is - is a gimmick used to destroy every older home in the county because the arrogant Gov-Gods didn't want to look at poor people's houses.
Wow. That's some amazingly fucked up bullshit.
a gimmick used to destroy every older home in the county
Not sure about your county, but the goal isn't to destroy *every* older home in the county. They're perfectly content to render at least some them bureaucratically unlivable, but otherwise fine.
Want to put up a satellite dish? As long as it's under 18", isn't attached to the structure, and isn't visible from the street. No place on the property like that which has line of sight? I hear xfinity has some good deals.
Want to put up a sign? You're allowed three (which is actually two, including the required one denoting the house is part of the historic district), so long as they're made of the appropriate material, aren't attached to the house inappropriately, use period-specific font, and have no more than 3 colors coordinated to the house.
Admittedly, not nearly as many people wind up homeless because of these rules but, still, surprise regulations that have even less to do with the house and any concept of renovation and almost certainly conflict with supercharger mandates.
"YOU WILL hang a charger on the wall whether it ever gets used or NOT!", signed; yet another Nazi-Regime and their Gov-God Kings.
And whether there is any electricity for it or not.
So don't refurbish or fix the house. Just live in it and let it deteriorate, but make it last till you're gone. How will that work? Let's check with Detroit.
This is a direct gift from Boris to China.
The UK makes none of the components and raw materials to build and maintain EVs. Everything will be imported, and because of the quantities imposed by this mandate, will force importation and dependence on China’s sparse mining and manufacturing regulations.
Ironically, this is why the plan will increase pollution. Since nothing will be produced locally and all power supplies will have to come from abroad, and there will be no limit to the pollution created in China, this plan will absolutely cause more harm.
If you can no longer rule the world, might as well regulate some construction.
