No, Joe Biden Can't Save Christmas
We've turned the presidency into an omnipotent office, and we expect that our gifts and government checks will be delivered on time.

No, America, President Joe Biden is not Santa Claus.
It is tempting, of course, to believe in an all-powerful character capable of uniting the country politically, getting everyone vaccinated, and delivering Christmas presents to all the good boys and girls through nothing more than his sheer goodwill and the flexing of state power. It's been a rough couple of years, and now inflation is taking off like a team of flying reindeer. We could all use a nice story about a kindhearted hero bringing joy to a weary world.
A story like this one: "President Joe Biden is rushing to relieve congestion across the nation's complex shipping supply chain as it threatens to disrupt the holiday season for millions of Americans."
That's the first sentence—yes, really—of an article published this week by Politico about the White House's jolly old elf apparently scampering off to America's ports in order to save Christmas.
In reality, what Biden did was far less dynamic. He gave a speech browbeating companies and port operators for logistical logjams, and made some vague threats about dropping a sack of coal in their stockings. "If the private sector doesn't step up, we're going to call them out and ask them to act," Biden said.
As president, Biden has to give the impression of trying to do something. That's mostly what the job entails. "If there is one universally recognized principle in American political life, it's that the president of the United States should want Christmas to come off without a hitch," writes Rich Lowry, editor of National Review. To appear indifferent or helpless in the face of something as terrible as a slightly-less-prosperous holiday season is to invite the disapproval of the masses—or at least the handfuls of them who aren't locked into voting Republican or Democrat no matter what. We've turned the presidency into an omnipotent office, and we expect that our gifts and government checks will be delivered on time.
But the problem with believing in an all-powerful government is the same as believing in Santa Claus. The logistics just don't work. He wasn't talking about Old Saint Nick, but F.A. Hayek might as well have been when he described the so-called knowledge problem. From high atop the Commerce Department or the North Pole, there's simply no way for one person (or a large bureaucracy) to know what strings to pull and buttons to push. Not even if they have elves to help.
And so Biden is left to give the appearance of doing something while pretty much everyone who actually has knowledge about these things says he's powerless to help.
"What the president's doing isn't going to really hurt. But at the end of the day, it doesn't solve the problem," Steven Ricchiuto, U.S. chief economist at Mizuho Securities, tells Reuters.
"There's no political intervention that's going to get this done, and there may not be a human intervention that gets this done because this issue is now going to last well into next year," Steve Pasierb, the president and CEO of the Toy Association, tells Politico. (In fact, Pasierb's quote appears just four paragraphs after the bit about Biden "rushing to relieve congestion" in the supply chain.)
That's not to say that Biden isn't offering any good ideas. The White House seems to have put enough political pressure on the Port of Los Angeles, where some 60 ships were reportedly waiting offshore last month for the opportunity to unload, that the port will begin operating 24/7 in the near future. It's pretty wild that the port wasn't already doing that—in light of, you know, the 60 ships that are reportedly waiting offshore, and the fact that most major ports around the world already operate around the clock.
The blame there seems to lie at least in sizable part with Biden's union pals—specifically the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents workers at the Port of Los Angeles and others along the west coast. "A long history of toxic labor-management relations, particularly on the West Coast, has led to many of the issues at the heart of US container flow today," writes Peter Tirschwell in The Journal of Commerce, a trade publication. "Huge cost increases, limited ability to automate terminals, chronic avoidable disruption during contract negotiations, and far lower productivity and working hours compared with ports in Asia and elsewhere around the world are at the core of the issue."
As Scott Lincicome, a trade policy expert with the Cato Institute, noted in a recent newsletter published by The Dispatch, the U.S. does not have a single port ranked in the top 50 of the World Bank's Container Port Performance Index. Philadelphia's port ranks highest, at 83rd-best in the world. Los Angeles ranks 328th.
Automation could be a part of the solution, but of course the unions hate that idea. In 2019, the longshoremen's union secured an agreement that would keep automated terminals out of the Port of Los Angeles for at least six more years. So mark your calendars for Christmas 2025.
Biden has spent a good portion of this year trying to sell Congress on his proposed infrastructure plan, which would include a proposed $16 billion for upgrading ports. But without concessions from unions, those upgrades might turn out to be less impressive than they otherwise could be.
But even if Biden could do away with those labor issues simply by laying a finger aside his nose (or leaning on his labor union allies), it's pretty unlikely that the fixes would be felt in the next two months. Even shifting to 24/7 operations at the port, which requires hiring more workers (which is tough to do right now), is not going to occur overnight. There are myriad other issues at warehouses, in the trucking industry, and elsewhere. Some are functions of the pandemic, while others are longstanding issues exacerbated by the pandemic. None will be resolved quickly, and government intervention is likely to make things worse, not better.
The miracle of the modern holiday shopping season is, as it turns out, not that one all-powerful dude delivers millions of gifts in a single night. It's that thousands of people working millions of hours move mountains of goods around the planet for weeks and months before December 25, so everything can be in the right places at the right times and in adequate supply. All without one person being in charge of the whole thing.
That also means there's not one person who can fix it all when there are problems. The Biden administration should focus on the long term by figuring out what regulations should be cut and what government policies (like counterproductive tariffs) can be scrapped to let ports operate more efficiently. That should be the task assigned to John D. Porcari, a former deputy secretary of transportation, who was tapped in August to be the administration's point person for the supply chain issues. Unfortunately, "Porcari's primary recourse has been to call meetings with companies at different steps along the shipping process and encourage them to extend their hours and share information about obstacles," according to Politico.
That's not the role of government, so no wonder months of phone calls and speeches have seemingly accomplished nothing. Meanwhile, retailers like Walmart, Target, Costco, and Home Depot are chartering their own cargo ships and sending them to smaller ports where there are fewer delays, The Wall Street Journal reported this week. It's those kinds of innovative, figure-it-out-as-we-go approaches that will save the holiday season, not top-down orders from the White House.
We don't elect a president to be America's gift-giver in chief, and anyone old enough to vote for president should be aware that Santa Claus isn't real.

There's nothing wrong demonstrating his failure to meet the standard he and the left generally apply to others. If they want to claim this is unfair we should ask why they deserve a fairer standard they don't offer others.
I used to tell coworkers that it was impossible to please everyone but surprisingly easy to piss everyone off. Joe has demonstrated how little he can do to fix problems and at the same time how easy it is for him to make things worse.
Ahh, intellectual integrity is what you seek. Methinks you should look elsewhere as the left has none. The right has very little, but there is a non-zero amount in some regions.
Just seems odd that issues that did not occur before Biden are, apparently, not fair to blame on Joe.
It's hilarious, yet pathetic, how people like Boehm head out on these, 'the president doesn't have any control over these things' defensive tangents when their Mr Potatohead is flailing and failing. To Boehm's credit, he recognizes that Biden WILL fail, but does so only for the purpose of stating that it isn't his fault. Boehm sees his mission as reducing expectations so that the inevitable isn't blame-worthy.
However, we all know Boehm and his TDS would be losing his shit if any of this shit was happening under Trump, and saying Trump should have had this fixed long ago.
To a degree the role of the president here IS somewhat limited, but what Boehm oddly fails to mention, because it really isn't part of the mission here is to recognize that Biden and the rest of the Democrat Party have only added to the fuckup in ways that nobody would have dreamed, continue to do so on a daily basis, and anything that could have done has been left undone till it was yet another disaster. Seriously, this is the gang who hired Mayor Pete on as the Commerce Secretary, only to have him immediately take 6 months paternity leave. Can't make this shit up.
Kids become depressed when they find out that Santa Claus isn’t real and that Joe Biden is.
Maybe he can set up another fake Oval Office at the North Pole for TV speeches.
Boehm still isn't getting a pony.
There is some evidence that "Joe Biden" is being portrayed by at least 2 actors.
Even shifting to 24/7 operations at the port, which requires hiring more workers (which is tough to do right now), is not going to occur overnight.
There's a long waiting list for longshoreman jobs, thanks to the union rules. Thousands of people would be ready to start Monday morning. These are some of the best paying jobs you can get without a college degree.
What about truckers to move the containers already there out of the way?
Do I look like Santa Claus? Biden is the one with the magic powers, ask him.
they will have to wait until all electric trucks are available.
We can 't clear this logjam with fossil fuels!
Should just move the ports to Mexico and drive them up from there. Not joking.
Wouldn't the Jones Act allow them to hit two US ports if they hit a Mexican one in the middle?
Or just dump the Jones Act entirely and the ships could stop in a bunch of other ports to relieve the congestion at LA. Why do we accept the gov't picking which ports are winners and which are losers?
That's one thing he could solve. Drop all the regulations that keep drivers from doing their jobs. Let drivers sleep when they get tired instead of forcing them to sit for 10 hours a day and not being able to sleep.
The bigger problem is California. Two years ago they put through the gig regs that stop people from working other than for an employer. So given that 60% of the trucks in the US are owner operators, these guys can't work in California unless they sign on with someone like Schneider or XPO.
This however, would be a simple fix at the Federal level under the Commerce Clause for any deliveries that terminate outside of California. Federal law trumps state law regarding commerce between the states.
But there's no way that even if Mayor Pete the Commerce Secretary even knew this that he'd piss off Gavin Newsome.
A few years ago the idiot liberals in Cal passed even more stringent emission laws and now the result is that 50% of semi tractors are no longer legal to drive on Cal highways, which means those semi tractors are not available to remove the containers loaded with market goods to stores. The result is the pile up of containers loaded with market goods that won't make it into the stores in time for Christmas shopping which will result in losses for merchants which will result in many declaring bankruptcy which will result in more people losing their jobs.
Of course it doesn't help when crane operators are actively slowing down the unloading as well.
This problem is most likely not either longshoremen or truckers. Port of Los Angeles indicates that only 35% of containers get picked up by rail.
It's ludicrous to think the logistics bottleneck at the port is gonna be solved by adding many thousands of trucks every day to LA highways. For whatever reason, it appears that our freight rail system can't ramp up volumes.
Yeah, well, Trump didn't delivery very many romps with Stormy Daniels to very many of us, for Christmas, either! Not even sloppy seconds! So much for good will towards men!

It’s even easier when he’s muted. I don’t even mute Tony or Buttplug. That’s how much worse SQRLSY is.

Muted exactly one lefty pile of shit, and not only do not remember the name, but it was some short-lived asshole who seems to have quickly learned his/her oh-so-carefully crafted bullshit piles were worn-out beyond repair, and disappeared.
Don't mute the spastic asshole, since it seems to rile the piece of shit when he gets flagged; amusing.
The spastic asshole is reminiscent of the instructor we all had at one time or another; here's a half hour of irrelevant personal views, followed by 10 minutes of information. This asshole assumes we'll all grant him that time for no return at all.

Less alcohol and less motherless loser activity could fix that.
Sometimes it's best not to speak.
It's not Joe Biden's job to save Christmas, whatever the fuck that even means, but it is his job to not implement policies that completely devastate the economy and destroy the value of our currency.
Assuming that all of this isn't deliberate, which I don't think we can definitively say at this point.
Never attribute to malice that which is explained by stupidity plus malice.
Oddly enough, I've seen three different people making that exact argument in the past few days, that Joe Biden isn't a senile old fool bumbling around doing stupid shit but that he knows full well what he's doing. If Joe Biden wanted to fuck up the country as badly as possible, what would he do differently? Shut down the oil pipeline and ban further oil exploration, throw the border wide open, spend money like a drunken sailor, promote a divisive identity politics agenda, appoint an entire cabinet of incompetent fools based on a list of diversity check boxes, and on and on - Joe Biden has been a disaster for the US.
I tend to believe that that Joe Biden is a senile old fool bumbling around doing stupid shit. It's the people behind him that are in question.
I think it's obvious that Ron Klain (sp?) and "Doctor" Jill are largely running things. Their agenda seems to be some combination of sabotaging America for the benefit of the ChiComs, instituting as much progressive idiocy as possible, and totalitarianism toward anyone who dares act out against them.
Bingo - Joe isn't deciding a damned thing.
that Joe Biden isn’t a senile old fool bumbling around doing stupid shit but that he knows full well what he’s doing.
Why not both, like how Bush was portrayed as both a chimp and an evil genius bent on destroying the world?
So he's Reagan?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5wfPlgKFh8
You left out "aggravate China and France with questionable diplomatic moves".
Also fuck up the withdrawal from Afghanistan about as badly as it could have been fucked up.
I thought the Taliban would have murdered all of our allies and the thousands of Americans we left behind by now? When's that happening you hysterical little bitch?
Yeah, as long as they don't get killed, it's okay to leave them behind like that. Sociopathic little loser.
Go visit, Strudel. Maybe they won't torture and ransom you.
Never attribute malice to the puppet. Attribute malice to the puppet master.
I don’t think Biden is capable of being deliberate about much of anything at this point. The handlers he regularly refers to are though. He appears to have a lot of the kooks from Obama’s administration pulling his strings.
Just like Trump pulls your strings.
Traitor
What a pointless, weird comment. Are you on drugs?
Shut up hillbilly
Two flags for the asshole!
No, he's off of them.
We have to assume it IS deliberate. All this crap happening is not by coincidence.
Oh bullshit, Biden could (but won't) solve the shipping and unloading problem, but you wouldn't like the solution: overthrow the California government, impose a pro-trucker and anti-eco rule and telling the commies to get fucked.
He won't, as I said, but someone will need to do so.
This problem isn't restricted the the ports at Long Beach.
This is the port at Savannah, GA. All those green dots are freighters waiting at anchor.
It would take Biden about 5 minutes to do what Truman did with the steel industry or Reagan did with the air traffic controllers. Declare an emergency and tell the union to get fucked. While he's at it, he could declare California guilty of interfering with interstate commerce with their egg and pork mandates and their trucking and independent contractor rules. Because the ports problem isn't simply getting the containers unloaded, it's getting trucks and truck drivers to tote off the containers and California has its own rules which restrict both. And as DeSantis has argued, if your ship has to lay up for months to get unloaded, how long does it take to sail through the Panama Canal and put in at a Florida port?
The containers float. Drop them in the harbor temporarily.
Especially the ones filled with tea!
We could have a party!
Are you off the wagon?
Or are you so senile you forgot you’re a pussy loser who doesn’t drink?
Project much?
Sevo tacitly admitted he’s a loser who whines about what a pussy he is at 12 step meetings.
I can handle my booze, weed, and blow.
Asshole gets another flag, asshole.
Sevo gets defensive when you point out he’s a pussy who can’t handle booze or drugs and has to whine about it at his loser meetings.
Hey SucksMormonDick, how pathetic do you have to be to keep returning to a website where everyone tells you how pathetic you are because it is so obvious to them and where you are also one of the dimmest bulbs in the bundle? Did your mom use to give you shit and now you need a replacement?
Asshole gets flagged!
Many of those ships running between China and California are way, way too big to fit through the Panama canal, or any existing canal for that matter. They were built for that one specific route to ship as many steel boxes full of cheap shit as can fit on a single diesel engine.
To tack on, it would be interesting to see just how much California shit it would take before it becomes more viable to sail around Cape Horn than it is to pay the California toll.
Could that dock on the west coast of Canada/Mexico and have it brought in from there?
iPhones ain't cheap.
Not cheap to buy, but cheap to make. They don't even feed the slaves enough to survive, they just get a new one when one of them drops dead.
You’re talking about things that Trump would do. Not Biden, or anyone on his administration.
"It is tempting, of course, to believe in an all-powerful character capable of uniting the country politically, getting everyone vaccinated, and delivering Christmas presents to all the good boys and girls through nothing more than his sheer goodwill and the flexing of state power."
Not to a libertarian.
"Uniting the country" always seems to mean "Do what the Democrats demand and stop complaining."
The word 'compromise' seems to have the same meaning.
People are being united but in ways Biden would rather not have.
I’m sorry- I think you meant to say that the jolly old elf was scampering off to slide his hand up interns’ skirts
With his best buddy, Bill "Syphilis" Clinton.
Christmas is discriminatory towards non-Christians. Also, not very eco friendly with all that shopping, shipping and travel. So why doesn’t everyone just stay home and be miserable like we did last Christmas, and enjoy a Tofurkey in your unheated dining room.
No, Joe Biden Can't Save Christmas
Because that Fauci's job?
The problem comes when they almost always do do something and inevitably frick it up even more. (Hehe. He said do do)
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Biden sniffed hair, but not of his spouse;
The no-vaxxers were hung (sic) by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Fauci soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of no masks danced in their heads;
Obama stopped by, for a night cap,
But Biden no brains was still in a nap…
One can only dream of a more libertarian president who gave more deference to the states and localities to deal with this pandemic.
I think the Trump administration ended up with a pretty good balance between federal and state for the most part. With the feds taking the lead on research and approval of vaccines and treatments, handling logistics of international imports of critical supplies, and standing up a cold chain to county health authorities, but otherwise acting only as a backstop when local emergency response needed a bit extra help. While the states were responsible for setting up vaccination centers and determining their pandemic regulations.
For this, Trump was regularly accused of not doing enough and ignoring the pandemic. What really pissed me off is when the Biden transition team ran to media to whine that there was no vaccination plan. That "no plan" was putting a million doses per day in arms by the time Trump left office, which matched the pace of Biden's "highly ambitious" goal of 100M doses in 100 days. As far as the Biden team's vaccination plans...I don't think a single one of those national guard staffed vaccination centers was ever even stood up, much less made the slightest impact on the rate of vaccination in the country.
And the Project Warpspeed leader who had 4 winners of the 6 pre-clinical vaccines he chose to contract with (an absolutely amazing success rate) and helped 3 of them get authorized within a year of the start of the pandemic? Asked to resign shortly after Biden took office.
Another sign of Biden administration "effectiveness": the only vaccine authorized under his watch happened within 5 weeks of taking office. We STILL have not authorized the AstraZeneca vaccine despite its wide use globally and the NovaVax, despite its phase 3 trial having completed months ago. It is not clear who to blame, but somehow, it just seemed that drugs were able to get from Phase 3 success to authorization more quickly under the prior administration.
And Novavax is what I would prefer to get if I have to choose one.
You aren't the only one I have heard this from.
It would also be nice to get the AZ authorized because last I heard, we are sitting on literally tens of millions of doses and won't export them until the FDA determines they are safe. Given how badly the developing world needs doses, holding onto vaccine that the WHO, dozens of respected drug regulators, and the recipient countries have all authorized is just cruel.
Colin Powell dies from Covid complications although being fully vaxxed:
https://www.zerohedge.com/
"...What really pissed me off is when the Biden transition team ran to media to whine that there was no vaccination plan. That “no plan” was putting a million doses per day in arms by the time Trump left office,..."
And none of the legacy media asked droolin' Joe about his "plan" for getting out of Afghanistan, after he trashed Trumps.
The entire administration is incompetent.
I'm not sure that the Trump plan would have been FAR superior, but, at a minimum, it didn't involve trying to pack up and leave during peak fighting season.
Both the Taliban and the Afghan gov't (?) were on board and cooperating.
"No, Joe Biden Can't Save Christmas"
You say that like you think Joe Biden wants to save Christmas.
He doesn't. What he wants is to save the Democrats chances in the mid-term elections which will happen in the middle of the Christmas shopping season.
Next Christmas, unfortunately. This year will be long since forgotten by the time that voters had to the polls.
Dunno.
He and his handlers seem to be fucking up everything they touch, and not showing any ability to learn. They could quite easily continue down the same path, since a large part of the attention is now devoted to making it look like he's still sentient.
since a large part of the attention is now devoted to making it look like he’s still alive.

They have to start now, it will take the government that long to get their shit together well enough to look like they are doing something.
We don't elect a president to be America's gift-giver in chief, and anyone old enough to vote for president should be aware that Santa Claus isn't real.
Everybody knows it takes Congress passing a bill to authorize free shit for everybody.
Not even Joe Biden thinks Joe Biden is an all-powerful character.
Which makes it all the more awkward when his lawyers have to argue why Biden tried to do it anyway (i.e. CDC eviction moratorium).
Might not be just da yoonyuns causing the bottleneck.

Not to mention the fact that the anti-gig-work law has a lot of truckers not wanting to work in California.
Good point.
Christmas has been cancelled by the woke mob anyway -- woke schools won't celebrate it because it's a "white folks'" holiday.
Biden can't save Christmas, but he surely can steal it... And he did.
Government can't create, but it can destroy.
Have no fear. This problem, like inflation, is just transitory. Harvard and Oxford educated Pete Buttigieg is Transportation Secretary and has massive logistics experience having dealt with big city traffic problems as mayor of South Bend. And now that he’s almost back from paternity leave, these piddling, transitory logistics issues will drop off as fast as his boss’s poll numbers.

Probably helped a buddy or two move to a new apartment; certainly qualified for a place in the Biden admin!

Except that Sec Buttigieg is still out on maternity leave. He is taking the entire two months. After all, what is more important - Buttigieg and their husband bonding with the two kids that bought, or millions of people having Christmas this year?

Yep and don't forget that Biden tried to blame Trump for shortages back during his term.

Also, fried chicken.
To be faor, Biden is not more Authoritarian than Trump was.
Really? What "authoritarian" policies was Trump guilty of?
Biden is already accumulating a substantial list of authoritarian policies.
The policy of trying to overthrow the last election?
Yep, concern regarding the honesty of an election is "[...] a policy of trying to overthrow the last election" At least to lefty shistains.
And, just in case the shitstain needs a hint, no way that bullshit claim, even if it were true. would qualify as "authoritarian". Thought I'd toss that in, given that you're too fucking stupid or drunk to know that.
And, I'm sure shitstain is just fine when a cop shoots an unarmed protester, so long as the protester supports Trump, right, you slimy piece of shit?
Do you even think before you speak. In the whole left wing media circle jerk the best evidence they could find is trump saying, to go and assemble peacefully.
Hey, it was an "insurrection" of rebels armed with nylon ties! Just what you need to "overthrow" and election!
Unfortunately, his moron followers didn't listen to that did they?
Well, that doesn't make Trump an authoritarian; in fact, not only did Trump ask for peaceful protests, he called for strict prosecution of people who violated the law.
That's quite different from Democrat politicians, who have supported violent movements, bailed out violent offenders, and called for illegal conduct, all in an effort to get into power. Now that is authoritarianism. It's, in fact, from the 20th century fascist playbook.
You mean raising legal challenges and then stepping aside when they failed? That's not authoritarianism.
What is authoritarianism is the Democrats' policies: violating election laws, funneling private funding to voter turnout efforts in Democratic areas, using lethal force against protesters, impeachment for partisan political purposes, spying on American citizens, abusing the FBI and FISA, etc.
"To be faor, Biden is not more Authoritarian than Trump was."
Hey, Guyasshole! How long does it take to for you to admit you're a steaming pile of TDS-addled lefty shit?
Hours?
Days?
Fuck off and die, asshole.
Oh, look! Here's Guy2010 to prove once again he's a TDS-addled pile of shit!
Yeah, asshole, let's see some specifics or you could just admit you're full of shit and STFU.
Betting we're gonna wait awhile. This asshole has been shoveling bullshit for quite a while and never seems to get down to brass tacks.
Almost turd-like in lack of honesty.
"To be foar", it seems the lefty asshole Guy2010 has yet again shoveled shit with no (like in "zero") evidence to back it up, righet lefty pile of TDS-addled shit?
Hey, Guyasshole! At least tell us lefty 'news' site told you he was "authoritarian". We'd all love a laugh at the expense of a TDS-addled asshole like you.
Guyasshole! Three hours and you can't come up with ONE example?!
How bout we just assume you're a TDS-addled lefty piece of shit, probably too stupid to cross the road without being run-down?
Fair?
Sure seems so, slimy pile of shit. Fuck off and die,
Republican propaganda is going to blame any hiccup in Christmas present delivery on Biden, despite believing fully that Santa Claus is responsible for this and is magical.
Shitstain throws out some bullshit, hoping to divert attention from droolin' Joe.
Fuck off and die, asshole.
It might be propaganda, but it also isn't incorrect. The fiscal and monetary policies pursued increase aggregate demand. Republicans did their best to try to stop the stimulus package in Jan 2021 and even warned about its likely effects on the labor market, so the Dems own that entirely.
The problems we have right now are highly consistent with an overheated, overstimulated economy. Which is aggravated from the fact that everyone is following the "not enough demand" playbook, when they should have been following the "not enough capacity" playbook.
What is more puzzling is that the Fed is still dumping over $100B per month of QE onto the economy. As the Fed is independent, it isn't fair to blame the Dems for the Fed's unreasonably accommodative stance. The fiscal policy though is totally fair game. And the fact that they are trying to jam through another $4.5T of spending indicates they don't understand what the economy needs right now.
What's the "not enough capacity playbook"? Take money out of people's pockets so that their expectations are lowered?
At some point we should stop talking about (certainly temporary) changes from some baseline as if those are themselves a crisis and start talking about human beings and whether their needs are being met.
The Biden administration's position has been that a little overheating is what the economy needs. Absurd levels of wealth inequality have made the perils of overheating a non-issue for decades, and even if good-faith people are talking about inflation now, they're actually worried about a recessionary reaction in the future, not whatever you think is the problem going on now.
I don't understand what the labor market problem is supposed to be. Employers can't find enough workers at the prices they want to pay? There seems to be a pretty standard solution to that one on the side of employers. Maybe sticky expectations of a cheap and desperate workforce need to unstick themselves.
The not enough capacity playbook is to increase interest rates and defer government expenditure. This discourages capital investment in the short-term, which helps the economy prioritize the most crucially needed improvements, while deferring investment/consumption that can be put off. It becomes a major problem if consumers and businesses believe that prices will continue jumping, particularly in a lower interest rate environment, as that encourages people to purchase now, before the price increases, which further drives demand, which further drives inflation, in a not very fun cycle for the economy.
I'm not as worried about the labor market. I don't believe that domestic labor cost is the major factor driving economy-wide inflation. Per BLS, inflation adjusted earnings have actually DECREASED by 0.8 percent over the last year. In addition, BLS reports that productivity has increased 1.8% for the year ending in Q2 (it takes them a while to compute productivity. In sum, the real cost of the input of labor is far below what it was a year ago. In addition, indications are increasingly pointing to labor participation being persistently lower, so the economy needs to adjust to be less labor intensive and we should allow that to occur as quickly as possible.
My concern is more around international imports and capital investment. The miles of ships waiting to dock because the ports are handling record breaking imports. The parcel delivery services imposing caps on how much their largest customers are allowed to ship with them because their sorting centers are overwhelmed. Railroads refusing to accept shipments from the west coast for weeks as their warehouses are overwhelmed. 6 month lead times on semiconductors. Multi-year backlogs on semiconductor fab equipment. The primary causes of these do not appear to be labor shortages (labor shortages do cause short-term disruption, but most of these are well paying jobs that can draw from lowering paying industries). The problem is that there is simply insufficient tools, equipment, and facilities to deal with the overwhelming level of demand, and those take between several months and a couple years to build.
Is your assessment that this overheating is reducing income inequality? Given that real wages have decreased, but the market is up by double-digit amounts, I would think that wealth inequality, if anything, has increased.
Ah, I see that I contradicted myself there. Yes, the evidence suggests that the labor market distortion from the January stimulus is likely not the primary driver of inflation. However, the massive transfer that paying more in unemployment than original wages represents could be a factor driving massive consumption and, in turn, inflation. And it certainly kickstarted the drive to a less labor intensive economy (which people are noticing in the form of restaurants cutting hours). It is unclear whether this is a good or bad development. It depends on whether people are actually fully out of the workforce (more retirees and homemakers who have no intention of getting back in) or whether they saved their transfer payments and are simply waiting things out. Once restaurants and the like realize they don't need to be open as long or open their dining room and can earn similar amounts of money, they may not be interested in getting back to their original staffing.
By definition, the only driver of inflation is the printing of money.
Regulations, taxes, and other government interventions lead to price increases but not inflation.
While I am aware of the Friedman/Chicago School argument that inflation is always due to increases in the money supply, it should be noted that the Democrats favorite school of Economics, Keysian, sees the issue as I had laid out, a mismatch between economic capacity and demand. Anyway, Biden isn't exactly discouraging the Fed's current $120B/month of QE which directly increases the money supply.
I am not sure what to do with the argument that something can result in price increases, but not inflation. The inflation rate is a weighted average of price increases. So, unless you have offsetting price decreases, price increases are inflation.
The economy isn't "overheating", it's cratering: nominal GDP growth is below inflation, US debt is skyrocketing, and the US trade deficit is out of control.
Yes: inflation and government handouts. Both make Americans worse off in real terms.
Yes, after doing grave injury to the US financial system, social fabric, and currency, a recession is inevitable.
Per the BEA, real GDP growth was positive in Q2 and current-dollar GDP was up double-digits (on an annualized basis).
While I agree that the economy is in an unhealthy state, it is producing more goods and services than it was before the pandemic, in other words, GDP is higher (on an inflation adjusted basis). It is doing this with fewer workers than before the pandemic.
Yea because just last year this was a problem right ? We need a Biden "playbook". Ha, what would be that be? Ways to control drooling in public or what to do when you you don't know where you are?
You are always wrong.
Stop complaining and do your Christmas shopping now. My wife and mother-in-law have always tried to have their Christmas shopping done by Halloween, going back to when I started dating my wife in 1991.
I threw my then-girlfriend in 1991, because our first date was November 2nd, and she had to shop for me after Thansgiving.
Hint:
Early Christmas shopping is NOT going to cure the ills that droolin' Joe (or his equally incompetent handlers) are delivering to us.
"Stop complaining and do your Christmas shopping now."
Easy for you to say Madamoiselle Antoinette
Only Santa can save christmas
But droolin' Joe can kill it.
Did not vote for Trump in 2016, but was happy the hag lost.
And then Trump started doing some really good things, while TDS-addled infantile assholes like Brandyshit kept whining that he really wasn't the daddy-figure they wanted!
Fuck 'em all with a rusty garden rake; turns out we got the best POTUS in the last hundred years.
And Reason was among those doing their dambest to make sure we got droolin' Joe as a replacement.
Hey, Welsh! Don't spend that $5 check all in one place! Just remember what you used to get, TDS-addled asshole.
“ We've turned the presidency into an omnipotent office, and we expect that our gifts and government checks will be delivered on time.‘
What do you mean “we”. Every Democrat administration, the Progressive establishment moves heaven and earth to give the Presidency more direct power, and every Republican administration the Progressive establishment whines nonstop when the President uses the power and precedent they handed their boy on a platter.
Also; other than the mail, which outside of major urban centers works fairly well, I am always astonished when anything the government attempts that doesn’t involve breaking things goes as advertised.
He means "progressives, liberals, and so-called libertarians".

Looks like Virginians are about to elect a Republican as Governor.
Nah, election has already been fortified. Not enough people west of Richmond to overcome the fraud.
The entire school board and superintendent need to be arrested and charged with covering up a felony.
"The Biden administration should focus on the long term"
This is the real problem with our politics. Far too much of it is focused on the next election and not on real long term solutions. The 2021 Christmas will be the last before the 2022 elections and you can be sure if it is not perfect we will here about all the problems till November 2022.
No, the government isn't deity or a mythological figure like Santa Claus. But I expect them to run the basic functions of society, things like roads, borders, law enforcement, supplies being delivered on time, etc. Presidents can't stop pandemics and hurricanes, but they're expected address these critical situations. I may call police if I hear strange noises in my house, even if cops can't magically appear like Batman on the spot.
Otherwise, why am I paying taxes? I should throw my hands up in the air and say "oh well government isn't omnipotent" when a duly elected president and the secretary of transportation he hand picked does nothing to alleviate supply logistics?
This is the major flaw in progressive thinking. That government beurocracies are responsible for a functioning economy. As if it’s snug video game and the goverment are the programmers. At best they’re the referee when they can focus. But I get it why not exploit the idea that If you elect the right person, they program the game in a better way.
That being said shutdowns, mandates and all this extra cash being dump on the population via the central bank, stimuli, and unemployment bonuses, haven’t helped at all. They definitely have worsened the problem.
At best they are ignoramuses who assume, in their ignorance of the "Knowledge Problem" that they are actually capable of directing an economy.
There's plenty of references, but here's Hayek:
https://fee.org/articles/hayek-the-knowledge-problem/
There is, as yet, no computer capable of dealing with an economy, let alone a tin-pot-dictator wanna-be like Newsom, and Newsom is entirely too stupid to understand that, much as turd it too stupid to understand that he is posting lies.
Bought groceries on Saturday. We only needed a weeks worth and it came to $250+. Last year we could buy 2 weeks worth for around $300. I don't think the young female checker with the multiple face piercings found it amusing when I snidely said to my wife "And the Biden administration says inflation is just a high class problem, guess we're high class now."
On the other hand did find Writer's Tears copper pot Irish Whiskey 750 ml on sale for $22 at the liquor store. Was even cheaper than the Bulleit bourbon I also bought. Damn fine whiskey for a damn fine price. Paid almost $50 for 750 ml last time I bought it.
I have not tried Writer's Tear's but that is a damn fine price for a bottle that size. If you like the taste I would buy more.
An interesting related topic. I have noticed that stores in my area are loaded up with pumpkins. More than I usually see and at very reasonable prices. Now I live in a pumpkin growing area and I assume many are local. This leaves me wondering if this year had a bumper crop of pumpkins or if it may be too expensive to ship the pumpkins out and so the local market is getting more.
I've noticed a shortage of potato products at our stores. Montana has a fairly decent potato growing industry but for the most part it's for seed potatoes for Idaho, Washington and Oregon commercial growers.
And all of Montana has been experiencing a drought this year, even though most potatoes are grown under a pivot, drought still impacts irrigated fields. Just not as much as dryland fields.
You can't survive on bourbon. Bourbon is a high class problem.
Meat and potatoes are not.
Let's go Brandon.
He may not be able to save Christmas, but he sure did manage to mess it up.
Grinch Biden stole Christmas, and his heart will never grow. His heart might start any minute now though.
Grinch Biden stole Christmas, and his heart can never grow. His heart might STOP any minute now though.
The President matters when he meddles in the economy. Two years ago was any of this a problem? No . What happened? Well Joe the Village Idiot and his followers think they have to tinker and "Build Back Better" or something. GO AWAY! Literally repeal every EO, mandate and law of the last two years and then just go away. It will all be OK
Now the animated corpse in the White House wants to force Navy SEALS who refuse the kill shot and are discharged to ...now get this: pay for the training.
I was going to say something about removing this walking talking corpse but instead leave him in the White House for as long as possible. The longer he remains there, the more he and his apparatchiks mess everything up until the breaking point. Until it all turns to one big fuster cluck which is where things are headed.
This administration is filled with ivy league neo-marxists, hell bent on destroying America.
Stupid dumbed down Americans are clueless. They have no idea what's coming.
