Universities Are Teaching Intolerance
We need more alternative paths to education and employment.

Do colleges and universities educate or indoctrinate? That question has been a sure-fire way to start an argument for many years as the cost of higher education escalates even as data shows elite institutions becoming increasingly ideologically monolithic and intolerant of dissent. Whether or not traditional higher education equips graduates for the working world, it doesn't seem to be preparing them for life in an open and diverse society.
"Our results indicate that higher education liberalizes moral concerns for most students, but it also departs from the standard liberal profile by promoting moral absolutism rather than relativism," write the University of Toronto's Milos Brocic and Andrew Miles in a recent paper published in American Sociological Review.
The authors compare the intolerant moral absolutism found among university students to that of "religious and political conservatives" and note:
"Rather than supporting traditional norms, these students emerge from university with a moral profile characterized by high concern for others and weak commitment to traditional social order. One interpretation of these results is that some university students—particularly those majoring in HASS [humanities, arts, and social sciences] or who continue on to graduate education—come to believe that the morals of society must change to remedy historical (and current) injustices (i.e., moral progressivism), but that the moral principles they have learned through their studies represent the real moral truth (moral absolutism)."
In case nobody picked up on the overtones of religious fanaticism, the authors add, "This lends prima facie support to recent claims that the moral relativism of years past is transforming into a form of liberal moral puritanism."
The perception that too many universities have become de facto ideological monasteries isn't unique to Brocic and Miles.
"There is an extremely intense, fundamental social justice religion that's taking over, not all students, but a very strong [space] of it, at all our colleges and universities," social psychologist Jonathan Haidt observed in 2016.
That absolutism and intolerance isn't unique to higher education or one political faction; liberals have long accused conservatives of leavening their politics with too much theology. Now the phenomenon has spread across the political spectrum.
"American faith, it turns out, is as fervent as ever; it's just that what was once religious belief has now been channeled into political belief," Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institution argued earlier this year in The Atlantic. "Political debates over what America is supposed to mean have taken on the character of theological disputations. This is what religion without religion looks like."
But universities are supposed to be centers for exploring ideas and expanding knowledge, not for establishing the one, true faith. When their denizens become convinced they've found "the real moral truth," as Brocic and Miles put it, that leaves little room for their original missions, or for dissenters.
"66% of students report some level of acceptance for speaker shout-downs (up 4 percentage points from FIRE's 2020 report) and 23% consider it acceptable for people to use violence to stop certain speech (up 5 percentage points)," The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education reported last week of poll results from its 2021 College Free Speech rankings.
"The research is clear, and our experience working with these schools confirms it: Much of the campus climate for expression is determined by the administration," commented Sean Stevens, FIRE's senior research fellow for polling and analytics.
Brocic and Miles agree in part, that "Increasing political homogeneity among faculty and/or administrators could create a sense of moral consensus that leaves shared liberal beliefs unchallenged or might even make them seem naturally true." But they add that "growth in moral certainty might also be explained by socialization into the official culture of dominant institutions. According to scholarship in this area, universities are the primary institution for mobility into the professional classes. Consequently, their latent function is to socialize students into dominant status culture by teaching proper etiquette, aesthetic tastes, and moral evaluations that serve to legitimize their advantaged class position." That is, students may mouth "acceptable" opinions and scorn "unacceptable" ideas because they think that's the way to gain access to good jobs and high social status. That access doesn't come cheap, either.
"Over the 30 years between 1990-91 and 2020-21, average published tuition and fees increased from $1,810 to $3,770 at public two-year, from 3,800 to $10,560 at public four-year, and from $18,560 to $37,650 at private nonprofit four-year institutions after adjusting for inflation," according to the College Board.
That paying high prices to learn left-wing liturgy (and when to shame unbelievers) may be less necessary than advertised is demonstrated by the growing ranks of employers dropping requirements for college degrees for new hires. "Penguin Random House human resources director Neil Morrison said that growing evidence shows there is no simple correlation between having a degree and future professional success," The Guardian reported when the publishing giant changed its criteria for employment in 2016.
Tech companies, in particular, note a mismatch between what colleges offer and what skills they require of their employees. Google even launched a Career Certificates program intended as a substitute for traditional higher education.
"College degrees are out of reach for many Americans, and you shouldn't need a college diploma to have economic security," the company noted when it announced the program last year. The certificates are recognized by over 150 employers, including such high-profile companies as T-Mobile and Bayer.
These certificate programs aren't for everybody, but they're a viable alternative path to gainful employment and success in life. We'll need more such alternatives at a time when universities are charging high prices for an "education" in intolerance.

You guys really need to talk to someone about this necrophilia fetish.
Double possum fuck Joe Biden, his whore of a VP, and the fucking horses they rode in on.
Holy shit, this is old news to the tune of several decades. Yes, Prog-tards get churned out from the ideologue press in college, and no, they are not liberal by any real definition of the word.
Yes, yet another "we needed a study for this?" situation.
TooSilly wouldn't dare talk about this when it might have made a difference. And certainly not When it could have cost a D an election.
That sort of behavior gets you shunned in his social circles.
No, he only poses libertarian when he is sure it is safe to do so.
TooSilly, I like that. Certainly fits the writing.
You're not kidding.
Since the 70s the cost of a college degree has gone up at roughly 300% of inflation.
The post 2008 doldrums really hurt the perception of value, too, as unemployment was so high and paths to self-employment were being squeezed that employers were requiring a degree for secretarial level jobs. A generation grew up thinking it was 70K in college debt or no job and crushing poverty for life.
But it has been going on as long as I have been alive and likely longer.
and I know people who blame the unaffordability of college on "too low of a minimum wage" as if the price increase wasn't wildly higher than inflation
"But - in 1970 a minimum wage job could cover tuition"
These people might be too dumb for college
the worst are the people who honestly believe tuition has skyrocketed because of funding cuts, like those schools were ever getting $50k/yr/student from the government at any point
never occurs to them that the government guaranteeing incoming students would have (borrowed) money to pay whatever the universities charge is the problem
THIS
Yeah, it's the opposite. The more money you throw at it, the more tuition goes up. The people running the financial side of the schools aren't stupid and they aren't leaving any money on the table.
I was meandering gov statistics and noted the unemployment rate for recent graduates has been increasing steadily since 2000.
You also see business surveys report a growing competence gap between what Cupcakes thinks they can do and what the boss feels is worth paying for.
Colleges are not prepping for reality. Save your money.
And there's a bigger gap between what cupcakes think they are there to do and what bosses want done.
Wait, when you subsidize things it drives up the price by the amount of the subsidy? You mean organizations will raise prices based on the available means to pay, not give things away for less than they're worth? Who would have figured such a thing except ... anybody with a brain.
I think it's because people still believe that the price if an item is derived from the production cost for that item. I can't tell you how many times, when someone says, "How can they charge that much for [item]? It costs them almost nothing to make." and I say, "Because that's what people are willing to pay for it.", I get a completely blank look. I used to think it was only old people like my dad who went to school in the 30s and 40s before market-based theories became standard in high school education, but it's pretty universal.
Granted, I was running marketing for high-end sportswear and it is a little eye-popping what you can sell that stuff for. But it makes me sad that people still think production cost matters in wholesale and retail pricing.
A college education is just a product. It's worth what people will pay for it. And subsidies drive up the price, they don't lower it. Which is why low-interest loans for education have screwed so many people.
Progressives are gonna progressive.
Progressively more illiberal.
It would be good if they were more not alive.
You could save hundreds on car insurance with progressive.
Progressives will confiscate your car and redistribute it to someone that supports their tyranny. No car = lower rates.
No, in their faith you'd still have to pay for it in the name of "fairness".
And be liable for any infractions, crimes, or collisions involving "your" car.
I think "fairness" is an outdated "white supremacist" term. You can tell the obsolete ones, they're the words you can understand and stand for things you can test out for yourself. Like "Does this make sense?" or "Is this consistent when you swap out terms?"
So, if you can tell what something means, it's probably outdated, unfair, oppressive, or some kind of privilege.

This makes it sound like the whole centuries-long endeavor of wresting higher education away from the cloistered monks of The Church and effectively insisting that everyone attend has been a fool's errand.
Careful Toosilly, talk like that might get you labeled as an oppressive technophobic Luddite technophobe by the we're-totally-not-progressives-we-swear libertarians at Reason. I mean, how could any right-thinker since the time of Plato question progress at any time and about any point?
Whether or not traditional higher education equips graduates for the working world, it doesn’t seem to be preparing them for life in an open and diverse society.
My mistake! Tacitly asserting that education's primary goal is to promote diversity rather than functionally training them for a vocation? You've uttered the incantations correctly.
Do colleges and universities educate or indoctrinate?
Answer: Indoctrinate
Colleges are a collage of intolerance.
Quilts of correctness.
" . . . it doesn't seem to be preparing them for life in an open and diverse society."
It also doesn't seem they are working to keep an open diverse society.
Only if open means free of charge and diversity means physical appearance and not political belief.
"Open" is meant in the sense of Popper's "Open Society" (for which George Soros' Open Society Foundations is named; Soros being a Koch collaborator). "Diversity" is meant in the post-modernist sense of culturally and socially divided people of different skin color living in close proximity for the purpose of eradicating traditional cultures and societies. The latter is the means to the former. Diversity Is Our Strength! War Is Peace! Freedom Is Slavery!
More than just political, the viewpoint inculcated and fostered is specific to the US. It's a post-industrial society centered view, in which only the experiences of upper middle class academics and a chosen few minorities are taken into account. This is a culture of ignorance, ironically based in education. Equally ironic, the fact that the practitioners claim to embrace all cultures, but view everything through a lens of the 'first world.'
experiences
Experiences is too reasonable and pragmatic. Plenty of evidence to suggest these upper middle class academics aren't themselves latinx and have few, if any, latinx friends as much as they just imagine themselves being part of the latinx and having loads of latinx friends.
Pretty sure their landscapers just think of them gringos.
I'm not sure there are many Latinix. None of the Latinos and Latinas I know are.
They are preparing them to go forth and multiply their ideology.
The only good news I see here is that employers have finally figured out that having a degree does not = success in a given endeavor. Yes, engineers and researchers need to know what they are doing and be competent at their professions, as well as physicians and medical professionals and such. But on average the person you hire to perform a task that you have to teach them to do anyway? Not so much. More important are things like honesty and dependability, and initiative; the things you cannot teach a person [who should have learned those things way before they applied for a job].
Credentialism is the predictable result of anti-discrimination laws and regulations. Until about 25 years ago, a college degree was a reasonable proxy for IQ. Since employers were disallowed to discriminate on the basis of race and gender, and since IQ tests were disallowed because of their disparate impact based on race and gender, requiring a degree was a way of discriminating on the basis of IQ without implicating race or gender directly. Turns out the value of the credential diminishes in direct proportion to the number of people who possess the it because it fails to be useful as a tool for discriminating (yes, Virginia, discrimination is actually a good thing; it's how we distinguish dog shit from fine cheese).
There's also the plain old, non-racial, self-serving, socialist dilution/delusion that's gone on, well below/beyond the post-secondary level, for the past 50 ys. if not longer. In the 50s-60s it was "discovered" that kids who took algebra in HS did better in college and professionally, so algebra became a mandatory part of HS curricula. Regardless of whether you had the capability/motivation/desire to flip burgers or design rockets. Didn't matter that you couldn't or wouldn't do algebra as well as your peers; you had the same diploma, the same shot at attending a university.
We've also found that professionally successful and intelligent people tend to wear eyeglasses at higher rates than the general populace, therefore we've mandated that all children must wear eyeglasses for the improvement of society.
I'm gonna heresy up the place and assert that diversity should be an organic result of principles (tolerance, understanding, empathy), not a goal in and of itself.
Diversity is NOT our strength. To the extent that it exists, it's the RESULT of our strength.
"66% of students report some level of acceptance for speaker shout-downs (up 4 percentage points from FIRE's 2020 report) and 23% consider it acceptable for people to use violence to stop certain speech (up 5 percentage points),"
Get ready for the struggle sessions, they’re coming.
Everyone knows that fucking Mao used college students to eliminate his enemies during the Cultural Revolution, right?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Revolution
From wiki:
“Launching the movement in May 1966 with the help of the Cultural Revolution Group, Mao soon called on young people to "bombard the headquarters", and proclaimed that "to rebel is justified". In order to eliminate his rivals within the CCP and in schools, factories, and government institutions, Mao charged that bourgeois elements had infiltrated the government and society…”
I don't think struggle sessions are going to have the same effect, in 2nd amendment land. But I will be amused as they try.
I foresee many targets of opportunity.
Ammo is available [at least the NATO rounds and 12 gauge, if you are willing to pay 2-3 X what it costs a couple of years ago] as well as .300 BLK [which has always been expensive]; in answer to the question "if you only had one gun" that of course would be the AR platform be it .223/5.56, .300 BLK, or .350 Legend.
.350 Legend
This has got to be trolling.
Yeah, because all you Tuff Gai 2nd Amendment enthusiasts were so vicious and brutal while you cowered in your house like useless pussies with 3 masks on your face lest some CDC bureaucrat speak ill of you. The government learned all it needed to know about you in the last 2 years; you're fucked.
Speaking of targets of opportunity, another troll muted.
Bye.
Lol, yeah, the big tuff gai that's gonna shoot down the coppers has to mute anybody who disagrees with him and retreat to his safe space. Truly revolutionary. What a badass.
I'm confused. are you talking about the same "tuff gais" who supposedly "stormed the capital in an attempt to overthrow the republic" when you say these people cowered?
Are they a threat or not? pick one
“I’m confused. are you talking about the same “tuff gais” who supposedly “stormed the capital in an attempt to overthrow the republic” when you say these people cowered?

HA, gotcha bitch!!
There are good reasons for why many cultures sent their young people away on vision quests, spirit hunts, and discovery trips beyond the frontier. The underlying message: come back when you are less annoying.
And most cultures had equally good reasons for ignoring young people when they were around. We can do the same.
There are good reasons for why many cultures sent their young people away on vision quests, spirit hunts, and discovery trips beyond the frontier. The underlying message: come back when you are less annoying.
"And if you're too fucking stupid or lazy to figure out survival skills, you'll die and thus not become a burden on the tribe when you get back."
"The underlying message: come back when you are less annoying."
Funniest post I've read since I got here. Well done, Earth Skeptic!
Earth has a point, society has become weak because we have eliminated the right of passage. In tribal societies the right of passage separates the weak from the strong, often barring them from taking a wife and procreating. In this way the tribe is kept strong. You know that whole Darwin thing, we now coddle the unfit.
What is being described is limited to the very smaller percentage of the college campus. I doubt that you will find much concern about ideology in the Schools of Business or Engineering. Similarly I suspect that community colleges preparing students for employment have don't have much of a problem.
I would also argue that these kinds of things are self limiting. When I was at the University of Wisconsin Madison in the aftermath of the Vietnam War the student government was very left wing. Eventually the left wingers got to be tiring and we voted in the "Pal and Shovel" party and had several years of farce. The pink flamingos on Bascom Hill, the boom box parades, and the Statue of Liberty. We all loved it. I suspect this will happen on todays campuses also.
Your information is dated and has aged poorly. Think twice.
All is well! All is well!
With my soul, with my soul. So sayeth Reverend Moderation.
And yet this same idea is starting to infest Human Resources departments at businesses. It's come up from the new hires they find at college recruiting fairs.
^BINGO!
HR and personnel offices have long been dumping grounds for a lot of otherwise useless people who probably would have been housewives, bridge club gossips, or maybe factory workers in prior years.
They exist mostly to balance out the demographic disparities created by the need for an IT department, forestalling the EEOC lawsuits that would otherwise result.
Fun fact--a lot of affirmative action hiring in the early EEOC decades was done by hiring a bunch of white women rather than minorities.
Universities keep piling on “core” requirements to engineering programs ostensibly to create engineers that are sympathetic to human needs. Or some other garbage like that. Those classes were a waste of time and ballooned my degree to 147 credits. Learning about the hardships of lesbian peasants in 18th century central Europe and how rent control is a good thing hasn’t helped me or my career.
^EXACTLY; Anyone who holds an academic degree should well know that 75% of what is required has absolutely NOTHING to do with the job unless that job is in Lefty-Propaganda which will be a Government Job (Stealing for a living instead of actually *earning* one by supplying resources the people's FREE-WILL wants to purchase).
The "whole person" concept was a valid one for the nation's intelligentsia up until World War II, because the elites needed a grounding in several cross-disciplines in order to keep society functioning.
Democratizing college education, starting with the GI Bill (although it certainly has its roots in the land grant college movement several decades prior) transformed college from an intellectual prep environment to a post-industrial training center of sorts, and made this concept an outdated one in reality, if not in practice. This, combined with the rise of the New Left in the 60s who parked themselves in academia to try and avoid the draft and ended up making academia or politics their career, later led to decades-long growth of wide-ranging and increasingly esoteric, schizophrenic disciplines designed to meet the needs of that post-industrial, information age society, while simultaneously trying to preserve the "liberal education" pretense with stuff like ethnic and queer studies that doesn't fit the needs of the market in any way whatsoever.
Basically, colleges could cut their credit requirements by half with no impact whatsoever on student achievement, but that would affect their bottom lines, and also lead to a rise in unemployment for a lot of professional navel-gazers who have served the left's purpose for moving the Overton Window as conservatives increasingly abandoned academia, or were shut out by New Left Boomers and their Green Party/Dem Lite Gen-X disciples through the 80s-2000s because they didn't hew to the leftist conventional assumptions.
It's a vicious cycle where they need more students in order to get more revenue, and then they need more teachers to handle the students. In order to cut the cost of the teachers, they have grad students teach, but then they admit more grad students than there's a market for. So then in order to attract grad students to unmarketable degree programs, they have to create jobs for those degrees. They can only do that by adding academic requirements and expanding the administration. At which point their costs balloon again, and they have to admit more students.
Rinse, repeat.
Tuition isn't the main revenue source of most universities. Partnerships with industry, intellectual property generated by their labs, naming rights, endowments, etc. bring in far more than tuition. They price tuition to the market which gives them a well-paying side hustle, called providing an education to students.
I doubt that you will find much concern about ideology in the Schools of Business or Engineering.
That might have a lot to do with the motivations of those students, too. When I was a grad student at Drexel, I had lots of left-wing professors. With 1 exception, they knew to keep it out of the classroom. Plus they got lots of grant money from the military.
In a Votech School - Not an Academic one. Business and Engineers are expected to spend 2-years or more being indoctrinated. The Lefty-Gods pretend it's "rounding the education" experience but it's really just required lefty-indoctrination.
You think Drexel isn't an academic school?????
What is being described is limited to the very smaller percentage of the college campus. I doubt that you will find much concern about ideology in the Schools of Business or Engineering. Similarly I suspect that community colleges preparing students for employment have don’t have much of a problem.
This is so laughably wrong that it can barely be considered an argument. This shit is all, in fact, the ideological status quo, and a simple attendance at any academic conference, especially in fields related to humanities, liberal arts, and social sciences, will bear this out. And it's been that way for AT LEAST 20 years, if not longer.
When I was at the University of Wisconsin Madison in the aftermath of the Vietnam War
Why the fuck do Boomers think that the social environments they came of age in haven't changed a single bit since they experienced them 50-60 years ago?
In fairness, most Gen-Xers I know speak about the world as if it's still 1999.
I went through grad school during that time, and when I saw shit on "whiteness studies" being pushed in our curriculum, I knew the US was going to be in trouble once it went mainstream. I just wasn't sure how long it would take, but my fellow students couldn't embrace it hard enough and they ended up indoctrinating a lot of functionally stupid, easily manipulated Millennials and Zoomers with it for the next 20 years.
It's a damn shame, because for a very brief window in the late 90s, we were about as close to being a "post-racial" society as we've ever been in the country's history. The whole ideal of looking past the color of a person's skin was thoroughly mainstream during that time, but the cultural Marxists thought they wouldn't get their commie revolution until they started making race a divisive issue, and so they pushed critical race theory HARD from that point forward. It certainly didn't help that the neocons were running the opposition at that time and could barely be bothered to raise a fuss on much unless the subjects were tax cuts or forever wars.
I went through grad school during that time, and when I saw shit on “whiteness studies” being pushed in our curriculum, I knew the US was going to be in trouble once it went mainstream.
Same - grad school for me was '97-'04, which was right about when the change happened. I had to be much, much more careful what I said in my lectures, and what I lectured about, in '04 than I did in '97. My lectures on the history of the language were getting dicey because of talking about Aryans, and I was getting criticism for my syllabi not being "diverse" enough.
the cultural Marxists thought they wouldn’t get their commie revolution until they started making race a divisive issue
This I think misses the mark ever-so-slightly. From what I've seen those whom I would term honest Marxists see CRT and "Anti-Racism" as just another Neo-Liberal/Corporate-Establishment ideological game intended to keep the working classes divided (and they're not wrong).
But the current top-down "Anti-Racism" wave looks to me more like an ideologically bankrupt Corporate-Establishment Democratic Party still trying to get people excited about their greatest hits from the '60s. The worst thing to happen to the Democratic Party in the last couple of decades was the US becoming an essentially post-racial society, because without Civil Rights Struggle! what do the Democrats have, really?
IMHO, this is also what's behind the sudden Trans Rights! movement.
In fairness, plenty of us have to because more and more people talk about the world like large portions of it didn't exist before 1999.
This Gen Xer only wishes I could think like it’s somewhere between 1989 and 1993……Back when I still held out hope for the approaching (21st) Century….
But we can still recognize the modern campus as a live action version of PCU on a bad acid trip.
True. I am frequently surprised that it isn't actually still 1999.
I doubt that you will find much concern about ideology in the Schools of Business or Engineering.
Can't speak to Engineering, but I work pretty closely with the Business School at the campus I work at, and it's positively permeated with this ideology. They all identify their pronouns and snap their fingers instead of clapping.
I guess it depends on what you did to satisfy your core requirements. I found good stuff in most of the classes I took, but I picked classes that looked interesting rather than the easiest class that would satisfy the requirements.
If any of you have been in the military, college is basically ROTC/OCS for businesses. It lets you start in management straight away. It doesn't mean they are necessarily the best or the smartest, it just means they start in the middle instead of at the bottom. Let's face it, a 2nd Lt. just out of ROTC or OCS isn't inherently better than the sergeant they lead.
I hired regardless of college degree. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes it didn't. I had to teach the college kids a lot less about management, marketing, and supply chains, but they also had an inflated sense of their own knowledge. Both groups were equally difficult to manage, just in different ways.
The long march tipped higher education back in the 80s at the latest. What we are seeing now are secondary effects within the professions, who have all succumbed to the poison.
TooSilly pretending he is just waking up to it all.
"Tech companies, in particular, note a mismatch between what colleges offer and what skills they require of their employees."
No fucking shit, universities don't teach even the fundamentals well enough. We've had to deprogram and train what new employees need. Their degrees are glorified toilet paper.
What we need are technical colleges that dump the stupid left wing touchy feely bullshit and keep up with the times and technology. I don't want to hire anyone who got indoctrinated.
Ya; but the Nazi-Regime wants to STEAL the working people's money to pay people to get their glorified toilet paper. It's extremely hard to escape any business that uses Gov-Guns to make sales.
No fucking shit, universities don’t teach even the fundamentals well enough. We’ve had to deprogram and train what new employees need. Their degrees are glorified toilet paper.
Why should they teach this stuff, when the tech companies can find some H-1B from the Indian subcontinent to write barely functioning code for them at less than half the cost?
College, at least at the undergrad level, is nothing more than 13th-16th grade at this point. There's more rigor at the grad school level, but that's where the radical left establishment feathers its ideological nest and ensures the next generation of squawking birds are nurtured. The ones who don't fit in there tend to get pushed outside the nest.
Over 20 years ago, one of my fellow grad students was going off in class on how white people were never discriminated against, and I asked him, "Oh, the Irish weren't called 'white niggers'?" That shut him up, but I highly suspect I'd get drummed out of the program if I made that comment today.
one of my fellow grad students was going off in class on how white people were never discriminated against
I had to put off college for a term because my applications were turned down because I'm white. This is not me theorizing - I got letters from the colleges saying exactly that.
Personally, I would've gone with "Are you saying Jews aren't really white?"
Pretty sure you could easily leverage that into keeping yourself in the program even today .
As an undergrad at Penn State from 1975-80, I was heavily influenced (i.e. indoctrinated) by left wing professors of sociology, psychology, environmentalism, economics & education, by The Nation, Mother Jones and other lefty rags, by left wing speakers (Stokely Charmichael, Michael Harrington, Ralph Nadar, etc.), by CSNY, Jackson Browne, John Lennon and other lefty musicians, and by left wing grad students.
But all that changed in 1982 when I went to the USSR for two weeks, including almost a week in Moscow, which was the most depressing city I've ever been in. Nobody ever smiled or even made eye contact when walking on city sidewalks, as their eyes either staring at the pavement or looked like were scared of everything.
I recommend all left wingers (and other Democrats) go to Cuba, Venezuela or Russia for several weeks, as they'll quickly sober up on their left wing political fantasies.
I was in high school in the late '80s and pretty much the entire social science department at my school, with one exception, were former SDS guys who were actively and openly trying to sell us on communism (my favorite line from the one other guy: "we won't have a Revolution here because no one wants to go through all that so they can stand in lines for toilet paper").
At that time, they were still able to tell us that all the stories we were hearing about how awful the USSR was were capitalist lies (they really did tell us that).
What I've never understood is how people could still embrace socialism even after it became undeniable that they were in no way lies.
Basically, what happened is that Marcuse shifted the argument to claim that the working class was never going to be the vanguard because the US was too prosperous, and so they suffered from a false consciousness of the repressive society. That was the whole reason that the New Left embraced identity politics in the 70s-80s, because they figured they could form an alliance of the white liberal bourgeoisie and various disaffected ethnic groups to bring about communism through culture rather than through economics.
Marx's goal was the "classless society" where everyone had everything they needed for subsistence. Marcuse and his disciples dropped the class part completely and basically argued that the ideal society was one where "the oppressed" would have no economic insecurity whatsoever, and thus be free to sit around and navel-gaze all day. He alluded to one of his students--probably Angela Davis--saying that they'd be free to sit around and "think about what we are going to do." It's literally a utopian philosophy with no realistic shot of happening without preceding a social collapse, and so in their own circular stupidity, justifies this perpetual revolution bullshit that they're always doing.
Basically, what happened is that Marcuse shifted the argument to claim that the working class was never going to be the vanguard because the US was too prosperous, and so they suffered from a false consciousness of the repressive society.
Which interestingly enough is exactly what Marx condemns in The Communist Manifesto as "Aristocratic Socialism" - the notion that the working class needs an educated aristocracy to look out for it.
People like Marcuse tend to overlook the "ungoverned" aspect of Marx's utopia - i.e. that Marx's utopia is not an economy planned by elites, but an economy of autonomous individuals freely trading the fruits of their own labors.
So free market capitalism?
Yes, but don't tell Marx.
"that Marx’s utopia is not an economy planned by elites, but an economy of autonomous individuals freely trading the fruits of their own labors."
You say that as if it is a distinction of some actual difference.
It is not.
They are Utopians. It is all angels on the heads of pins bullshit with no basis in the real world and no actual value . They should all be treated accordingly.
Fuck Marx and fuck Marcuse.
I read an interesting take the other day, and I wish I could remember where. The author pointed out that many of these people held their political beliefs not through any thought of the consequences, but because they provide social reinforcement. Given that a lot of those beliefs have no rational basis in reality, I can believe it.
I wish Trump had threatened to nationalize the Ivys. That might have finally gotten their attention.
I never knew why they didn’t move to those places. So much of the world is socialist and authoritarian, Why stay in one of the few places that were at lest nominally pursuing laissez-faire social and economics policies? So many people have endured incredible hardships too escape from oppressive regimes, what was stopping our “Dissidents” from Immigrating to those hellholes they so admire?
But universities are supposed to be centers for exploring ideas and expanding knowledge, not for establishing the one, true faith.
I hate to break it to you, but if you look into the history of actual universities, you will find that they are, in fact, quite explicitly about establishing the one, true faith. The bit about exploring ideas and expanding knowledge is ideology.
College has jumped the shark!! In case you didn't realize it from the 70's movie "Animal House" which was a massive takedown of this bogus industry and the idea that everyone belongs in college for 4 years (or 8 years in the case of John Belushi's character's family - the college must have loved the extra tuition from his wealthy parents).
You could focus on the silly political correctness and intolerance or you could just focus on the outrageous tuition and fees. Like many other American institutions, "higher ed" has turned into an unsustainable ponzi scheme.
We absolutely cannot afford to send 80 or 90% of the population to traditional 4-year colleges. It's sucking money out of the economy and burdening people with lifelong debt. It's feudal servitude by any other name. Welcome to USA 2021: the banks, colleges, real estate and health care industries squabble over who gets to extract the last dollar from every middle-class American family before they die.
Note:

The trend is undeniable; anything the Gov-Guns touches becomes wildly UN-affordable an in-accessible.. Because... Of course; Gov-Guns doesn't create wealth it simply distorts the supply and demand chain by Forced THEFT..
Cool... years late, but cool.
You know who else promoted monolithic indoctrination in universities, which in turn became notoriously intolerant?
There was plenty of PC and a largely liberal faculty when I was in college in the late 70s. Communism was not a dirty word then. The Black Power movement was still popular and they were outright marxists. Louis Farrakhan was at the height of his popularity. Some colleges were hotbeds of radical leftist ideology like Oberlin, Yellow Springs, Berkeley and a bunch of others.
So now it has morphed into CRT and BLM. Outright Marxism is not so popular but we have the social democrats and progressives. These things are more like versions of the same story to me. I am not so worried. Culture war is nothing new.
Costs and debt are a bigger deal.
These things are more like versions of the same story to me. I am not so worried. Culture war is nothing new.
Yeah, but you could avoid or otherwise obviate both the Marxism *and* the cost/debt by getting a business or engineering degree, or going to a trade school. Now, not so much.
Seriously/Literally, it's getting to the point where you can't even become an Eagle Scout, relatively for free, without a merit badge in Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (despite Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, and Family Life merit badges already being required).
What conservatives are doing now equates to micromanaging education. Universities fund departments and courses according to what students want. If nobody shows up to a course then it is gone.
Universities are not supposed to be mere job factories. College students may be naive but they are not children. If they do not make their own choices, even the mistakes, they will always be children.
Conservatives used to encourage higher education. Now it seems they want people to run away from it.
They require diversity courses to graduate. You think I took them because I *wanted* to? Even the tech schools require sociology these days.
Sociology is complete bullshit. It's main tenant is that social norms are set by the majority, but that is not true. Social norms are set by hollywood elites, nut job academics, and political fanatics who scream about diversity while marginalizing people who don't agree with them. It is time to get politics out of education. Lets put it this way. If politics was shit and knowledge was ice cream, how much shit would you like in your ice cream?
But they probably know the difference between "tenet" and "tenant".
It's not related to the topic, but you can track your cargo here. https://kargofollowtr.com/ turkey cargo
"Tech companies, in particular, note a mismatch between what colleges offer and what skills they require of their employees. Google even launched a Career Certificates program intended as a substitute for traditional higher education."
Problem is that colleges and universities do more than teach academic skills, and verify that their graduates have acquired them at some particular level. They also serve as a costly signal that the graduate's got a certain degree of work ethic, conscientiousness, punctuality, and ability to work with others.
I may be absolutely brilliant in the academic fields that my employer needs. But if I'm incapable of handing in an assignment on time, or can't get along with co-workers, then I'm probably of little value to that employer.
Any substitute for a degree would have to address that as well. It's no good just asking people whether they're conscientious, punctual, and capable of working in groups, since it's quite easy to fake answers on something like that, or even to behave well for a short time when the stakes are high. It would have to be the equivalent of several years of writing useless papers about "To the Lighthouse" and the Stamp Act, despite the ever-present temptation to blow them off and go have some fun.
What's funny is you appear to think being Politically Correct according to the Lefty-Propaganda is an ability to "work with others".
When in fact that lefty-propaganda (intolerance) learning stirs more pots than any other. If your workforce isn't getting along I'd almost guarantee the ROOT cause is egotistical Ph.D. Democrats (i.e. Liberal Arts, Social Science, Human Resource, and Management) majors causing all the trouble. I see it everywhere ESPECIALLY in larger corporations who hire based on degree instead of performance.
Then of course this article backs that up to a T. Success is coming about by avoiding such degree based prejudice's. Which is sadly well-ingrained into societies culture. Successful people are starting to realize social degree's are worse than toilet paper.
I'd believe that our domestic Conservatives are sincere in the whining about censorship, if domestic Conservatives also advocated that their Religious Right Conservative competitors in ISIL/Daesh also be allowed to peddle their BS on college campuses/on social media without censorship - And if Conservatives had, before he dies, demanded that Bernie, the Conservative Media of investing, Madoff be pardoned and set free because he only gave people his "opinion" that they would get their money back if they voted with their wallets to invested it with him.
P.S. If Conservatives are allowed to spew their never ending lies in order to defraud voters into voting for Conservatives vile evil murderous pro-pollution ideology - I should be able to yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theater in order to get better seats or call in a bomb threat to the doctor's office if I'm running later for an appointment in order to hide the fact that I'm running late.
Why yes, Yes indeed by federal law you're allowed to run around a private theater yelling FIRE just as you would be in your own home. It's the Property Owners who will kick your *ss out. Civil legislation would be handled by local law. And yes, if you want to preach ISIL/Daesh theology or even NAZI (def; National Socialist) theology in a college campus you OWN there's nothing that is going to stop that either.
Now; Democrats actually do preach NAZI ideology all over the G.D. place. Allowable up to the point Democratic Politicians working for the Federal Government CENSOR the sitting President; that is a blatant and treasonous violation of the U.S. Constitution. And the FACT is the election was fraud-ed; State Governors issued E.O. to change mail-in balloting without legislature. And how did Biden win AFTER the polls were closed? ENTIRELY by mail-in ballots. The E.O.'S were ILLEGAL and so were the mail-in ballots.
Keep spreading your Nazi-Indoctrination fool...
Fire in a crowded theater? That phrase was originally used in a Supreme Court decision imprisoning a guy for distributing anti-draft pamphlets. But here's a quote from the justice who invented that phrase, just a year later:
What does shouting fire in a theater have to do with anything? This thread is about how colleges are spending more time indoctrinating students instead of teaching viable skills for their future, and your rambling attempt, and failure at making a comment just proves the point of the article. Everything you just orally defecated was nothing more than a strawman argument, the same stereotypes you morons are always shouting. Well let me tell you something. Stereotypes are a form of hate, they show that a person sees things in only one perspective. when you make up an argument for the other side and then try and debate with the argument you just made, you are effectively arguing with yourself. You are the perfect example of why it was a bad idea to close sanitariums, because you are clearly full of anger, and argue with yourself.
Anyone this neurotic should do the human race a favor and kill themselves.

And compliance, J.D.. Don't forget compliance.
Excellent article. Thank you. I especially enjoyed the, other paths to hiring and pursuing a financially successful life.
There’s no shortage of close minded narcissistic bigots eager to trade mere ethics and morals for the promise of advancing their interests.
That’s nothing new.
I suspect that today most employers know that a degree in Oppression Theology is not worth much. Included in that field of "study" are degrees in race, gender, and gender preference systemic injustices.
Indeed, such a "social injustice" degree should be seen as a red flag. It indicates that the applicant is a potential powder keg employee who should not be hired. No employer needs employee lawsuits.
But perhaps such useless degrees are just the tip of the degree legitimacy scandal. A college ACCOUNTING professor at UCLA faces expulsion for refusing to grade black students more leniently than everyone else in the class.
It's long been suspected that this leniency was an informal policy of many liberal professors. But apparently now it's become the official policy of UCLA!
If I were an employer looking for skilled employees these days, I would consider a college degree highly suspect as to its legitimacy. I'd require applicants to take an "in house" test to demonstrate that their skills were indeed real.
BTW, 40 years ago I would annually hire a college student to be my office assistant. I quickly learned that most (NOT all) SDSU student applicants -- even though pre-screened, were usually incapable of doing the work -- which included spreadsheets and using word processing software.
I eventually limited myself to UCSD students -- a much higher average quality on average. But even then I had applicants go through a half hour test that demonstrated their reading, writing and reasoning skills -- along with their oral and written "on the fly" thinking talents and their computer proficiency --- while revealing their political leanings. It was an EXTREMELY reliable tool.
The students I hired were rewarded with a crash course in finance which led several of them to high paying jobs upon graduating.
So, young people are adopting a liberal moral framework that promotes peace and individual freedom, extending the American project of tolerance for all, except this time without all the pesky God stuff, and this is a problem somehow?
I love the implication that as long as you steer young brains away from institutions of higher learning, they'll avoid being indoctrinated into a toxic worldview.
All of this anti-university rhetoric, of course, coming from the Christian dominionist and fascist movements.
We'd all be blank slates ready to take on an empirical and pragmatic moral worldview--just make sure the right people are in charge of which books we read, and that absolutely none of them are university professors.
Just let me know when you start firing up the incinerators for the bodies. We know what happens when anti-intellectual traditionalist boobs start applying their superior morality on us.
Being Alumni from some very liberal colleges (Goddard college -Plainfield Vermont, VCU Richmond Virginia, 90s) I’d say your opponents are more on the ball than you. Indoctrination does not help with critical thinking. Learning rote, does not help with critical thinking. Frankly it doesn’t matter that everything taught was Marxist, what mattered is that Most professors would not let their orthodox dogma ever be questioned, or critically examined. It was easy to pass, if you have the stomach for it.
This all comes down to Marxist infiltration of American colleges and universities. It has been known for years, ever since the 1930s when they began the infiltration until today nearly all the professors and instructors are Marxists.
The Ivy league universities are by far the worst. Totally run and staffed by avowed communists and socialists, they churn out little proles to spread their poison.
The Biden administration is at least 50% Marxist.
Black Lives Matter is a radical, violent marxist organization. ANTIFA is a violently radical marxist gang.
The worst part of it is that many of the large city mayors are all of Marxist bent. Newsom , Lightfoot, Wheeler, Deblasio, Frey just to name the worst. Look at their cities. In ruins.
There is no longer an respect for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. After all, they were written by old dead white slave owners. So out they go and replaced with what? Totalitarian government?
Toss out freedom and liberty so that some vague ideal of equity and equally vague idea of fairness can be instituted?
The only thing that matters is freedom, liberty, free markets and sound money. The only thing America needs right now is a return to some semblance of sanity and reason. Something that's missing in colleges and universities.
Wow J.D. still believes we're in 2012 with this post...Way to be way almost a decade behind on this trend. This has been decades in the making and took off from funding around 2008-2010, and hasn't gone down since.
Way to be ahead of the curve...*eyeroll*
"That absolutism and intolerance isn't unique to higher education or one political faction; liberals have long accused conservatives of leavening their politics with too much theology. Now the phenomenon has spread across the political spectrum."
So, because "liberals have...accused conservatives" that means conservatives are guilty of moral absolutism and intolerance? That's what is implied when you claim the "phenomenon has spread" to liberals. You treat the accusation of liberals as axiomatic. Bad writing.
