Brickbat: A Load of Garbage

The City of San Francisco is almost three years and half a million dollars into an effort to design and deploy the perfect garbage can. The Board of Supervisors has voted to spend $427,500 to build five prototypes each of three models designed by a firm it hired in 2018 and test them. Why not use models already in production and used by local governments across the nation? They aren't pretty enough. In the meantime, the estimated cost to mass produce whichever model is chosen has risen from $1,000 each to at least $2,000 and possibly as much as $5,000. "The idea that San Francisco is so unique that we need a separate trash can from anyone deployed in any city around the world is preposterous," said Supervisor Matt Haney. "It's something that reflects a broader and deeper brokenness of city government and the services it provides." Haney nevertheless voted to approve the money to build and test the prototypes.

They designed them so bums can't use them as toilets.
Isn't a garbage can preferable to the sidewalk, though?
The solution for bums is to forcibly remove them. If they’re sick, institutionalize them. If they’re not, jail them for loitering and vagrancy.
This idea of leaving them to shit on the street or in garbage cans is cruel and inhumane.
If dogs were on the street, we’d put them somewhere. Gotta do that with stray humans.
How about stray ex-Presidents?

Provide the bums with the same diapers that President Biden wears.
Headline: San Francisco’s Storm Drainage System Clogged with Dirty Diapers.
Would that be the result? Depends…
I see what you did there.
Like a colonoscopy w/o anesthesia to prevent VP from taking over? I'll take you questions now.
Fun Fact...Trump had 3 polyps removed...Eric, Don Jr and Rudy.
The bleeding hearts could pad their resumes with Homeless Diaper Changer Volunteer, while morally bankrupt lawyers would have a sex/molestation lawsuit field day. It's so perfect for SF.
To the businesses behind those sidewalks, no doubt. To the refuse collection unions? Not so much.
So no.
Not if the Refuse Collectors might have to touch it while emptying the cans.
If the designer fails to produce a model that prevents it being used as a toilet, he’ll be shitcanned.
They ought to make them so they can be used as a toilet. Unless that infringes on "homeless culture".
How would homeless trans folks feel about that?
Well, presumably they'd be agendered trash cans...
There goes another $500k designing those signs.
Wait, which one is the biden - er, bidet?
"The idea that San Francisco is so unique that we need a separate trash can from anyone deployed in any city around the world is preposterous,"
They should just see what sort of trash cans they use in Calcutta.
SF should pay millions to a consultant to do some sort of benchmarking study on Calcutta to see what their future will be like. There’s shit on the street in both places.
Why not deploy portapotties around the city instead? I hear there are lots of people pooping on the street.
They'll still be pooping on the streets since the Porta-Potties will be full of homeless people living in them or junkies using them as shooting galleries.
…throwing money away…
YOUR money. OUR money. Not THEIR money.
Makes a difference.

That is exactly why shit like this happens.
So the housing crisis must be over. right?
Oh, by the way, has any "journalist" followed the money?
Or did all the city rulers work for the Dept. of Defense in their past lives?
At this point in time, especially in places like San Francisco, a journalist could follow the money and uncover that every company involved is owned by the spouses of council members, and they’d still get re-elected. Progressives appear to approve of their leaders being corrupt as long as they signal the right virtues.
The DOD is a bunch of pikers compared to these guys; they literally spend real money on shit cans.
"...has any “journalist” followed the money?"
To a degree. Follow the link in the article and pay particular attention to an indicted criminal bureaucrat named Nuru. And then there's the previous SF garbage can fiasco (that was at least $5.2 million out the door) involving a different criminal named Wong.

I'm not finding this guy Haney's excuse for going ahead, though.
The signs on the front of the trashcans appears to be exclusively of the stereotypically male gender. Also, why are they white?
White trash?
Also, which can is for what? They both just look like general trash. Where's the plastics bin? The cardboard bin? The metal bin? The landfill bin? The food recycling bin (we have those in Cali now, makes you wonder where the re-used food ends up)?
These arent the actual cans.
SFC is like that exGF who was attractive and fun to be with but then got too freaky and weird, abused multiple drugs, shaved half her head, and joined some kind of commune.
So you stuck it in crazy; please tell us more, it's a slow news day anyway.
Meanwhile I can buy a trashcan at the local Lowe's for about twenty five bucks if there's a sale going on.
To be fair, it has to be a can that folks can't take home. Lowe's cans won't work. But SF is notoriously a tax sink for all of California, so...
I wait until Menards has 11% off and then get the rebate for another 11%
What happened to those $20,000 designer trash cans they touted only a few months ago?
Guess they were all stolen and ended up in the front windows of pawn Shops.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting a different result.
Oh well, it's not our money we're wasting. I wonder how long Sillycon Valley will continue to exist as nothing new has been erupting out for quite some time now.
California is running on fumes.
I believe this is the same story.
The graphics fail on the cans. It took me a good 5 - 10 seconds to figure out that there were two different garbage streams desired. I suspect that both will be used without distinction.
mmmmm..... dog poop in a bag along with your nice clean newspaper for recycling..... there goes that whole load!
Above is a stock photo.
