College Campuses Have the Craziest COVID-19 Restrictions of All
Here's why that should terrify the rest of us, too.

Last week, Brown University implemented strict new COVID-19 mitigation protocols following 82 confirmed positive (including asymptomatic) cases among students.
Until the number of cases decreases, students are forbidden to gather in groups of more than five, whether indoors or outdoors. They are no longer permitted to eat in the cafeteria, and must instead pick up their meals and eat elsewhere, keeping a mask on at all other times. But they can't go out to eat at bars or restaurants; this is strictly prohibited. The university doesn't want students to mingle with anyone from outside the campus, but administrators would also prefer if students declined to make new friends among their peers.
"Students are expected to consistently engage with the same small social group, rather than attending or 'hopping' among multiple small-group gatherings over the course of a day or short period of time," according to the university.
Students will also be tested every four days.
It should be noted that the overwhelming majority of Brown University teachers, staff, and students are vaccinated. Vaccination is a requirement. Since vaccines offer excellent protection against severe disease and death, COVID-19 outbreaks at Brown are unlikely to seriously harm anyone.
"On a campus where the vast majority of students and faculty are fully vaccinated, I think the university should instead return to something near-normal," one student, Adam Shepardson, told Campus Reform.
This is a reasonable expectation. Campus environments, where the populace skews younger and the vaccination rate is 90-plus percent, are ideal places to ease into the post-pandemic reality: They are extremely safe from the threats of mass death and crowded hospitals. University authorities would be well-advised to treat the diminishing threat of COVID-19 as an opportunity to lift restrictions, ease up on masking, and let students enjoy the social and educational experiences they're paying for.
Instead, something close to the opposite is happening: Far from returning to normal at an accelerated rate, many colleges are implementing some of the most authoritarian mitigation efforts out of anywhere in the country. Harvard has encouraged students to keep "close contacts to a minimum" and wear masks at all times; Yale instructed students to wear masks in their own dorm rooms if any friends are visiting; the University of Southern California prohibited all indoor eating and drinking and asserted that if students need to hydrate during class they should first leave the building.
"The exception to this rule is limited to instructors, who may briefly hydrate while teaching but must re-mask immediately," said the dean of USC's law school in an announcement.
In an effort to completely disrupt illicit socializing, Columbia reprogrammed key cards so that they would only grant access to students' individual residence halls. The campus is currently in the midst of a "temporary" two-week ban on hanging out with other people.
Guidance from campus administrators is often authoritarian in tone. Boston University's recent missives to students emphasize the need for obedience to random testing requirements and warn that serious punishment will occur "should you fail to become compliant."
Journalist Michael Tracey has been tracking COVID-19 restrictions on campuses and notes that many administrators are creating vast surveillance networks to keep students in line. "University of Michigan requires all students/staff and visitors to acquire the 'ResponsiBLUE' app which reveals their vaccination status and 'health screening' results," he writes. "This must be presented on command when entering facilities. There's every indication it will be made permanent."
One might have expected students to rebel against these measures: Many campuses contain a loud and active contingent of injustice-minded protesters. But if young people at Columbia, Harvard, and elsewhere are fed up with mandatory masking and social distancing, they certainly aren't saying so. In fact, some students seem to be eagerly reporting each other for COVID-19 noncompliance. And at campuses where the mitigation efforts are less militant, students have actually protested the lack of enforcement. University of Iowa students recently held a "die-in" to demand that the administration pause "all non-essential in person events" and implement a mask mandate.
This is madness. Few people are safer from COVID-19 than vaccinated 18- to 22-year-olds, yet campus administrators (and sometimes students) are acting like any amount of non-masking or basic socializing is likely to get people killed.
I've written quite a bit about cultural trends in higher education, and how the illiberal values of campus activists have come to dominate all professional spaces where elite opinion holds sway. Progressive young people who view basic free speech principles with antipathy or even disdain are in the process of fundamentally changing the workplace. "We should look to the campus activist culture of the present to discover what our broader culture might resemble a few years from now," I wrote in a recent article for the Deseret News.
If recent history is any guide, we should be terrified that the current crop of college students might leave campus possessed of the notion that the most insane version of pandemic oppression is perfectly normal and desirable.

This is no surprise the far left has inculcated the Stasi like reporting on others for a long time. You don't have to comply though.
Seriously, think about that. If you're complying with marxist trash, you are the problem. They won't change because they don't have the mental capacity to make the change.
Actually, it is because colleges are run by faculty from the humanities department. Smart people with no real world experience and little or no common sense. Nothing as stupid as a genius in the sociology department.
Sociology: The study of the patently obvious.
What a time to be alive!
Proud to be an American!
Where at least I know I'm free to go maskless while taking a quick drink from my water bottle!
where at least I KNOW I am free to not don the mug-nappie wherever I go. Study the construct and composition of the stupid blue rags. They can no more contain or block a point zero two eight micron viral particle than a piece of chainlink fencing can prefent mosquitoes from entering ybour bedroom window.
And we TOLERATE ThIS CRAP?
I"ve had four years of pre-med biology at a VERY highly rated medical school, and know a few things about disease, vectors, immunology, disease tramsnission, public helath protocols, etc. and I can unequivocally state that 95% of the "stuff" "they" are telling us is insane childish drivel, worse than useless. MEANWHILE.... I have yet to see ANY government agency provide ANY clues or hints as to HOW to avoid this illness, defeat it if you DO get it, hw bto boost your own immune system to prevent and/or lessen severity if caught. I have NEVER EVER heard of ANY other instance where the entire medical profession REFUSE to treat early synptoms, mandating instead that people contracting it get IGNORED until/unless they get bad ejough to require hospitalisation at which point one's chance of recovery is a small fraction of what it was two weeks previous.
The evidence has become overwhelmingly solid that they WANT millions to get sick and DIE from this disease, a first in medical history.
Follow the (political) science!
Or if you "feel the spirit"...
There may be a bit of a difference (though it's been some time since I hung out on a college campus), but I have to imagine, unlike the wokest excesses, this is an unwelcome addition to college campuses. Students, at least as far as I can tell, hate being told they can't see their friends or socialize and won't repeat that behavior just because they experienced it before. Ideas may grow outside of campus, but humans just don't repeat authoritarian bullying because they were a victim of it at one time. For example, just because I went to a Catholic high school, where failure to keep your ties up and collars buttoned at all times resulted in detention, doesn't mean I dress like that everyday now or demand my staff do the same; I hated it then, and still hate it now. To be certain, many of the more vocal advocates against socialism in the US are indeed immigrants from socialist countries.
That's old school, Marco. Times have changed. They only rebel against the "other" team now.
Students, at least as far as I can tell, hate being told they can’t see their friends or socialize
Not all students are the same. This may describe normals, but the woke are generally socially dysfunctional. They are drawn to politics because the sense of community is available without any requirements other than group loyalty much like cults. So this trend may help normals split from the woke but it won't effect the woke from acting like Stasi informers.
'But the woke are generally socially dysfunctional,' some maybe, but I would suggest that that they have embraced the mantle and nomenclatures ('neurodivergent', etc) in order to garner the cachet of victimhood. The 'woke' are shitty people, but from what I have seen, they are not typically mentally ill, unless it is self-diagnosed or faked.
Socially dysfunctional is not the same as mentally ill.
But if they're already woke, I could give a shit. They have no influence. They're chasing their tail into an ever-tighter ball.
>>Students, at least as far as I can tell, hate being told
nope. they loooooove being told. and telling.
College: where you pay people $50,000 to give you a piece of paper that certifies you read $300 worth of books.
$300 worth of books that you paid $5000 for.
Wonder if they will reduce the student activity fees wince there will be fewer group activities.
And put the Dean of Student Activities and xi/xir's entire staff out on the street, where they would have to apply for a "real" job?
That is just beyond heartless; wokeness isn't even a given in the outside world; how could you possibly expect them to cope with such massive triggers?
a piece of paper that certifies you BOUGHT $300 worth of books.
fixed that for ya. Even of those books were actually READ (not that likely) there is no certain method of verifying the content of those pages has found a home wihtin your cranium. Most of the "material" is better off NOT assimilated.
I say this as one who, in his 60's, got hornswoggled into returning to cawlidge for a stint... completed a second degree, which was fun, andI did gain some useful knowledge with some future benefit potential.
But most of the airheads with whom I rubbed shoulders those two years were silly kids in their late teens and twenties. I know several dozen in their mid-teens who are light years further down the road to maturity and usefulness than nearly any of the "adults" with whom I shared classrooom space those two years. Out of the several hundred with hom I passed those two years, maybe two or possibly three of them are even in the same league with respect to intelligence and usefulness than any of the several dozen fifteen and sixteen year olds I know, and have watched grow up since infants. THOSE young ones are the ones who will be shaping our world to come. NOT the useless whingey dweebs depicted on these college campuses today.
Guidance from campus administrators is often authoritarian in tone.
You don't say. From what I'm told, today's college campuses would be champing at the bit to signal like this. But when it's enforced? The Student Union bookstore is going to sell out of Ayn Rand.
I will bet your next paycheck that the Student Union bookstore doesn't carry Ayn Rand.
Double dog dare on that; no, it seems today's students are very much in favor of authoritarianism from "their" team; it is the only way to bring the rest of the populace into line.
The only way to unit a disparate people is through tyranny.
unite
That could easily be read as "...through tranny." And it would make sense!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for spelling champing correctly!
So does being 20.
If everyone under 50 without serious health problems had continued as normal, this would be over. And probablyy fewer people would be dead.
Yep. I have a graphic from last year showing 70,000 college "cases" and 3 hospitalizations. That's while 0% of them are vaxxed.
We should just pull ALL funding from them.
Every. Single. Penny.
Brown is mostly private, with a founding endowment from (gasp!!!!) a slave owner (swoon).
Brown, along with almost all other universities, accept student loans. It's doubtful Brown could survive long term without federal funds.
I think they'd be fine, well until Harvard stops discriminating against Asians.
That high-pitched 'screaming sound' you hear is Mario Savio red-lining in his grave.
Smart people cannot accept a lack of control. They must do everything in their power to maximize the feeling of control.
Honestly, this is one of the most impactful teachings of Christianity. You don't have control. God has control. Of course people being people, they flip this to "I don't have to do anything, Jesus take the wheel!"
*sigh*
My experience (with Presbys) is "Let's help God out by passing this law for peoples' own good."
Sadly, that was the overwhelming experience I had attending Presby church 10 years ago.
yes God DOES have control.. but He has chosen to use men as his means of connecting His power/control with reality.
It is Christ in US, the hope of glory. Not "instead of" or "alongside of" or other perversions of the equation. But that takes the humility to recognise that it IS Him within us. Not me taking the lead, not my laying down and surrendering.
These kdis wanna abdicate to their "superiors" in the admin positioins, thus fobbing off their own responsibility to someone else. A cop-out if ever there was one.
"Students are expected to consistently engage with the same small social group…”
Luckily this totalitarianism philosophy will be confined to Ivy League college campuses, and we have nothing to fear outside of the academic world.
Worry when the new camps have smaller dorms and showers.
Two weeks to flatten the curve.
Man, forget 14 days, it's been more than 14 months.
So, like most things government, 30x over budget.
Jesus Christ, I'm crying seeing the comments in reply to this article. They're tears of joy realizing that this country may not be fucked after all with this many people recognizing that colleges are collections of morons and the students are even stupider. So many good comments!
The problem is not with the Reason commentariat; it is with the next generation of government, business, and academic work force. I would not let my optimism get too our of hand here.
Leftists dominate elite university campuses
Leftists love to restrict speech and behaviors they don’t like
Leftists freak out the most about COVID
Is anyone surprised then to see totalitarian COVID policies at these colleges?
"Leftists freak out the most about COVID."
Only when the cameras are on.
The Left has been openly hungering for a global crisis that would justify them assuming absolute power. They've been trying to get that out of climate change for decades, but the predicted effects of climate change are too long term to sufficiently panic people, plus all of their predictions so far have been spectacularly wrong.
But if they can spin COVID into the second coming of the Black Death (can we say Black Death anymore, or is it racist?), then we all have to submit, and if our neighbors don't, well then they're killing us and we have to do whatever is necessary to protect ourselves.
Joke Biden is running out of patience for all of us who won't get with the program.
African American Death?
I think I'll stick with Black.
Death of Color.
"In fact, some students seem to be eagerly reporting each other for COVID-19 noncompliance. And at campuses where the mitigation efforts are less militant, students have actually protested the lack of enforcement. University of Iowa students recently held a "die-in" to demand that the administration pause "all non-essential in person events" and implement a mask mandate."
They've got them where they want them; this are the people who will be populating business and government in the next generation.
Few people are safer from COVID-19 than vaccinated 18- to 22-year-olds,
Those few include unvaccinated 18-22-year-olds, 18-22-year-olds with natural immunity and 18-22-year-olds who have already had COVID-19, none of whom will require booster shots the rest of their lives.
"University of Michigan requires all students/staff and visitors to acquire the 'ResponsiBLUE' app which reveals their vaccination status and 'health screening' results," he writes. "This must be presented on command when entering facilities. There's every indication it will be made permanent."
HIPAA?
What is this "HIPAA" everyone prattles on about?
Big Blue indeed.
The Big House, just got a little bigger.
Brown is at the pointy tip of the progressive agenda. Rule by the(ir) chosen elite (mostly them) is the goal; liberty and personal responsibility are to be exterminated. But fear not, once "the right people" are running every aspect of every life, and society is finally well organized, everything will be better. Really! That's the promise!
Like the backdrop in a Star Trek movie; everything is organized, evenly distributed, and perfect. And all that progress isn't just going to promote itself, now is it?
So it's been decades since higher education offered students any kind of academic or skill-based advantage in the workplace. Now it seems that students won't be building social connections that last them the rest of their lives either. So what is college for, again?
Employment for folks with advanced French literature degrees.
So it’s been decades since higher education offered students any kind of academic or skill-based advantage in the workplace.
This is not true universally, and where it is true they have been this way for 50 years. We essentially have two separate systems co-functioning. One teaches skills [engineering, hard science, business, medicine] and the other teaches political loyalty.
To get drunk and screw?
Only with three masks and two condoms.
So you really do have to mask up while hooking up? Doesn't that eliminate, or at least greatly reduce the effectiveness of certain types of oral foreplay? Is a mask still an effective after it's been soaked in seminal fluid?
Is there no limit to the damn foolishness that the unproductively employed can dream up?
Well, I don't. None of it makes sense.
It's mostly a money laundering scheme at this point.
The problem is NOT with the colleges, it is with their lawyers. The Colleges are afraid of lawsuits if anyone gets very sick or dies from COVID on campus. They now have "rules" to point to showing that they have done something to try to prevent it.
The Colleges are afraid of lawsuits
Finances are not driving the movement. Covid restrictions took off as soon as they became useful to identify the woke & progs from the normies.
"Go stick your head in a bucket of warm lard!"
"Oh you did! Wow, did not expect that! You have truly demonstrated that you are one of us."
That's a part of how we got zero tolerance BS on high school campuses. Guy defends himself against his bully, suspend both of them, that kind of thing.
Can't sue us. We're following the rules.
High school administrators are literally the law on high school campuses. And off campuses too if they feel like it. It's crazy the amount of power they have over their students. The student has no recourse except to get their parents fired up enough to make a stink about it, and even then it has to catch the attention of the national media before the local school administrator stops saying "fuck you I said so that's why".
I never understood why colleges are any more responsible for the wellbeing of their students than any other landlord is for their tenants.
I never understood during the whole rolling stone rape story era why colleges are adjudicating that sort of thing.
I mean, it's RAPE. For fuck's sake, that's a police and courts issue. Someone reports a rape, you get law enforcement involved right away.
Howard Hughes is smiling in his grave.
This should not surprise anyone (regardless of ideology). Progressive-Elites have claimed the minds of colleges for decades.
college campuses are unnecessary.
Wow. I would not go th@ far. Rather, I would say that “institutional-reform” is essential for the institutions to return to some sense of normalcy.
the normalcy of college bank accounts and ivory towers of babel?
E.g: https://www.heritage.org/political-process/report/the-birth-direct-democracy-what-progressivism-did-the-states
Give me safety or give me death.....
"I'm going to need new conspiracy theories. All my old ones have come true."
The number and depth of conspiracy theories that drive both the Left and Right is astounding. Sometimes I feel like the last rational human being alive. It's either immigration and trade will kill us, or it's capitalism and trade will kill us, or both sides shitting their pants over billionaires running the world, and ONLY their partisan figurehead is free of shadow insider influence.
Jeepers cripes, listening to Nick's recent podcast on 9/11, and was reminded when the entire Right once shit their pants over Rachel Rey wearing a black and white scarf, and Dunkin Donuts had to go cancel her lest they incur the wrath of pouty people.
"The number and depth of conspiracy theories that drive both the Left and Right is astounding..."
Never stop apologizing for your BOTH SIDES!!!! idocy, Brandyshit; maybe one day some one will buy your steaming pile of shit.
"Sometimes I feel like the last rational human being alive"
My advice is drink heavily.
If Brandy is what is considered rational than mankind is doomed.
That I don't buy into your "Aliens stole the election from Trump to stop My Pillow from being sold" conspiracy means the world is doomed. Doomed! DOOMED!
What do you think I've been doing for the past twenty years!!!
That would explain a lot.
Are those conspiracy theories? I guess they often do get into conspiracy theory territory. But when you have people who say "don't let a crisis go to waste", they are just doing what they said they would.
"By Any Means Necessary"
the entire Right once shit their pants over Rachel Rey wearing a black and white scarf,
Yep, the entire right.
What a fucking idiot.
Thankfully Brown is an outlier.
It depends on the college. Most "proggie" colleges are going to kowtow to whatever the latest Karen demand is. But a friend who is a professor at a small liberal arts school (very liberal, not at all progressive, learn the difference) is seeing none of this nonsense. They spent a year in distance learning like literally every other institution everywhere, but now that they are back in classrooms, it's normal sensible precautions. Where a mask, but no need for radical distancing or banning students from gathering or anything like that. Hell, my corporate workplace has much tighter restrictions, 75% of which come direct from the county, not the office managers.
p.s. Of course, to the wingnuts, just the idea of having to wear a mask in a private institution is anathema. But fuck them. Private campus means campus gets to make the rules. Fuck off right wing slavers!
You know you can criticize private institutions for their actions right? That said criticism does not mean someone wants the government to do something about it, right?
Sure, but when you combine that with your constant whine about "Muh Rights!" means that you can't tell the difference between the public and private sphere.
Wait, you think the only entity that can violate your rights is the government?
"it’s normal sensible precautions. Where (sic) a mask."
There are many of us who do not agree that the face diapers are a sensible precaution. You're stealing a base there with that claim.
Masks are a waste of time.
I'm more disappointed that the kids are going along with it so readily than anything.
Me, too. I can't get over how now we old-timers (I'm 68) are the wild and free ones, and the young people are scared and care more about safety than living life to the fullest.
"(very liberal, not at all progressive, learn the difference)"
Impossible. The definitions keep changing in order to keep us guessing and off-balance. You may have definitions in your own mind that you'll need to share with the rest of us.
I have so many people to thank for their encouragement and advice. I never tackled a project like this before. It called for two strands of super bulky yarn and size 36 needles. I actually broke my first set! I did not know how on earth to attach more yarn. https://www.flyerbank4.com
Thank you for looking!
'One might have expected students to rebel against these measures: Many campuses contain a loud and active contingent of injustice-minded protesters.' One might, if one didn't think that the same protesters were idiots, and that left-leaning sorts in general have developed a hive-mind around the none-too-science-based belief system surrounding the coronavirus response.
The big advantage of buying an exclusive country club education is you get to network with your elite peers. Sure, it may cost $70K a year for 4 years, but being with the beautiful people will make up for it.
Sadly, all this COVID craziness has ruined all that. Now what? What's a social climber gotta do these days to stay at the head of the line. Those poor one percenters.
A heck of a lot of students attend college just for the sheepskin and their fratboy network. My university didn't have fraternities, and two fratboy type roommates had to actually join a fraternity at a neighboring college. Just so they could be in a frat. And not a scholarship frat, but the typical party frat.
One of them is now a B list talk show host / YouToober on the Right. I had no idea until someone pointed me at this site. Jeepers, he had a bimbo trophy wife and everything. Got a law degree as well, which was most surprising of all, as he was a total doofus in college who could barely break the C barrier. I guess it helps to have the right parents.
Green is not your color. Less envy.
The writers ignorance of the seriousness of the threat of Covid, even to the young, is only matched by his ignorance of how it spreads and the fact that requiring other vaccinations for attendance is virtually universal among our universities, and has been for decades. No wonder his opinion is ridiculously infantile. Is he a freshman?
"Campus environments, where the populace skews younger and the vaccination rate is 90-plus percent,"
Try learning to read, why don't you?
If Joe learned to read, he'd realize that Covid isn't the Plague.
IFR data is here.
http://www.nbc26.com/news/coronavirus/cdc-estimates-covid-19-fatality-rate-including-asymptomatic-cases
Even if none of the students were vaccinated, the threat of COVID-19 would be nil.
The marginal risk reduction from vaccination, in this context, is nil.
It is to the hundreds of thousands of Americans and their families that died from Covid, those suffering from "long Covid", and the approx 20% of those who got sick from it coming back to their docs with possibly chronic heart, lung, and brain problems.
So the approximately 130 million Americans who have had covid, gotten over it and are fine just don't exist in your universe? That explains a lot.
(Note, that number is based on CDC estimates of actual cases, not just confirmed cases, minus the dead and a generous 38 million for "long covid" and chronic problems.)
Desig, yeah and millions of Americans survived the Civil War, Spanish Flu, and WWII (by the way more Americans have died from Covid than in those events). I guess much ado about nothing.
Joe Friday doesn't read the article. Or frankly the comments he responds to either.
BOOGA BOOGA BOOGA!
When did our societal ability to judge acceptable risk fly out the window?
Indeed, MP. The risk from Covid vaccines is virtually non-existent while more than 1 in 500 Americans is dead from Covid.
What a bizarre question to ask for a libertarian.
We never had a "societal ability to judge acceptable risk". People used to take individual risks and suffered the consequences.
NOYB, people used to act with selfless patriotism for the good of the community and the country. Hell, rednecks in Georgia and Mississippi used to get their kids vaccinated before sending them to school without doing the drama queen routine about their "freedoms".
Acting for the good of the community would have been carrying on with life as normal so we don't fuck up the future for every young person. People used to accept some degree of danger as a necessary price to pay to keep civilization going and to make sure their children have a better future. Now everyone thinks it's OK to sacrifice everything for a slight reduction in chance of getting a virus that does no permanent damage to the great majority of people who get it. So fuck off. It's not patriotic or public spirited to sell out the future because you're scared of getting sick. The world is dangerous. We still have to live life.
Zeb, there is nothing about defending against a pandemic more deadly than any war we've been in and now the Spanish Flu, with as easy a sacrifice as getting a safe and effective vaccine and wearing a mask in closed public spaces that says uptight and overly cautious. Young people can spread it to their Grammy, not to mention the people in the towns they inundate every Fall. There is no f..ing reason to not do the safe thing except the drama queens crying about their right to party. F... off.
And Grammy can get the vaccine, so what's the problem?
Grammy watches Tucker Carlson and reads the comments on Reason, so she didn't get her shot.
Not my problem.
Not my problem if you can't get on a plane without a vaccine record Michael.
If you can't see why this is not comparable to a war (or the 1918 flu) then you aren't worth talking to. Fuck you. You fucked up everyone's children's future because you are a pussy.
Zeb, I accept your surrender. Better luck next time.
The good news is you can isolate fanatics by which college they attended and which program they studied. They might have Ivy League credentials but their degree is worthless and their best chance is interning for Senators, working for the DNC, and if they are really talented manning the fryer at a fast food joint.
I once got seated on a cross country flight next to an intern for Howard Dean. Gawd what a fucking airhead. Why won't she shut her yap? Because if her jaws stop moving her brains shuts down and she forgets to breath.
LOL at anybody actually paying to get treated like a prisoner.
Elvis, you have no idea what being treated like a prisoner is like, do you? Probably the same for what a real Nazi is, what real police state control is like, and why it is enforced - hint: it's not to control pandemics, which apparently only to Libertarians seems like fun.
You're right, prisoners at least have rights and can play basketball without a mask on.
Sure Elvis, and they can probably see their wife and family once a week. What a hellish life you and I live in this nation Gulag!
JFC Robby the campuses are not loaded with injustice minded activists, they are loaded with intolerant totalitarian leftists and total control is their goal. Stop pretending they are something they are not or stop pretending you give a shit about liberty and stop covering for them and giving them unreasonable credulity.
As someone who teaches on a college campus in NYC with some of the most restrictive COVID rules, the students largely don't follow the rules. I held a seminar with over 300 students yesterday, and at least 10% of them did not have a mask on even with signs posted at the entrances of every building stating that masks are mandatory. 50% weren't wearing masks correctly, and among that percentage were students whose masks only covered their chins.
It's like anything else: they can put the most restrictive rules in place, but you'll never have 100% of the population following them if they aren't enforced. And generally speaking, they're not enforced on campuses.
Or Gozer, generations reared to value something other than their own limited self interest, a destructive solipsism celebrated by too many of our political "leaders".

FREE MINDS AND FREE MARKETS
Our usual trolls don't actually come out and say they hate us for what we believe.
Joe is special.
Chuck P, free minds doesn't necessarily mean being an a..hole always on guard that you might be required to do something for the community and nation supporting your ass, protecting your precious "freedom", and without which, you wouldn't exist.
free minds doesn’t necessarily mean being an a..hole always on guard
Free markets means exactly that. If you don't get it, it is only because you are stupid or deliberately obtuse. You can get Cliff Notes on Adam Smith if you don't want to bother reading one of the thousands of analyses.
Hell, even Wikipedia does it justice: "The Invisible Hand is an economic concept that describes the unintended greater social benefits and public good brought about by individuals acting in their own self-interests."
the community and nation supporting your ass, protecting your precious “freedom”, and without which, you wouldn’t exist.
I pay taxes to the nation, state and county, patronize business and volunteer in my community. I am without question willing to participate in the defense of my own freedom. Exactly which part of the social contract am I not upholding in return for my currently qualified freedom?
Chuck, the market has it's limitations, though as a true believer I know that screws up your unified theory of everything. The world is more complex than any truism you can devise.
Apparently you are not holding up your end of the social contract - or are encouraging others not to - which calls on us to "sacrifice" by taking an extremely safe vaccine and wearing a mask in closed public spaces so citizens won't be croaking, clogging up the ICU's, screwing up the economy again, and forcing businesses you claim to care about from closing their doors.
It's not really difficult to understand
The world is more complex than any truism you can devise.
Is "the sockpuppet known as Joe Friday is a disingenuous cunt" a truism?
Apparently you are not holding up your end of the social contract – or are encouraging others not to – which calls on us to “sacrifice” by taking an extremely safe vaccine and wearing a mask
I like how you switch from 'you' and 'your' to 'us' as if I ever agreed to join your cult and the social contract to which I was referring were not the Constitution, which provides no power to demand such a sacrifice. In an effort to not repeat myself, I will just assume my statement above to be a truism at this point.
Chuck, your foul name calling reflects not on me, but your inability to mount any logical defense.
So, it is your contention that vaccine mandates are a violation of the Constitution? The SC ruled on this is about 1905 and dollars to donuts, you and your kids bowed down to that power more than once in your life. Was that the beginning of your imprisonment and enslavement? Please, tell us about it.
The SC said that THE STATES could mandate a vaccine for a disease with 10 times the IFR.
And as has been pointed out to you many times now, the SC routinely makes bad decisions that give the government powers they were never enumerated.
No, DesigNate, the court did not say that:
"Justice John Marshall Harlan wrote about the police power of states to regulate for the protection of public health: “The good and welfare of the Commonwealth, of which the legislature is primarily the judge, is the basis on which the police power rests in Massachusetts,” Harlan said “upon the principle of self-defense, of paramount necessity, a community has the right to protect itself against an epidemic of disease which threatens the safety of its members.”
and a citizen:
"[M]ay be compelled, by force if need be, against his will and without regard to his personal wishes or his pecuniary interests, or even his religious or political convictions, to take his place in the ranks of the army of his country and risk the chance of being shot down in its defense. It is not, therefore, true that the power of the public to guard itself against imminent danger depends in every case involving the control of one's body upon his willingness to submit to reasonable regulations established by the constituted authorities, under the sanction of the State, for the purpose of protecting the public collectively against such danger.”
Joe, your quote supports exactly what DesigNate said.
your foul name calling reflects not on me, but your inability to mount any logical defense
LOL! Every single thing you have posted is fallacious nonsense. There is no need to 'mount a logical defense' against pretentious twaddle. I only stoop to foul name calling for those who refuse to argue in good faith.
Appeal to authority some more to distract from those shifting goalposts, cunt.
Some of us value opportunities for future generations and a functioning civilization. You are the one focused narrowly on short-sighted goals. If everyone had kept a stiff upper lip, stayed strong and carried on, we'd be in a much better place right now.
If by keeping a stiff upper lip and staying strong means not too chicken s..t to get a shot, I agree Zeb.
I mean from the beginning, before there was a vaccine. People like you fucked up the world in ways that will take generations to fix. There is no excuse for that. You have blood on your hands. And now you are saying "it's just a vaccine" (which, by the way I have no problem with. Mandates and propaganda are the problem.). Defending our rights is far more important than minimizing deaths from a virus. It just is. People fought fucking wars for the principles that this country is supposed to stand for. But we're going to throw it all away because we're scared of getting sick. Fuck you.
Zeb, your right to be an a..hole is apparently precious to you, but it ends when your behavior, ends up killing people stupid enough to agree with you. No, we didn't fight wars so you could be a drama queen, imagining the CDC is out to rule the world and is only inches away from their goal and your being rounded up. What a fantasy, and do you wield a sword in it? Is it your contention that all of us getting vaccines before we headed to elementary school were just guinea pigs for the eventual take over? How about we make a bet on that Zeb?
What about those who already took one for the team? Why get the shot when natural immunity provides 13x the protection?
Don't know where you are getting that Chuck, but:
"In today’s MMWR, a study of COVID-19 infections in Kentucky among people who were previously infected with SAR-CoV-2 shows that unvaccinated individuals are more than twice as likely to be reinfected with COVID-19 than those who were fully vaccinated after initially contracting the virus. These data further indicate that COVID-19 vaccines offer better protection than natural immunity alone and that vaccines, even after prior infection, help prevent reinfections."

LOL, it is White Mike. Going on and on about fire extinguishers for weeks after the story was retracted.
Your link is to obviously flawed data analysis conducted in April. Spend 10 seconds searching and you'll find 'the evolving science', fuckwit.
Chuck, Aug 6 date, and no I'm not White Mike.
Quantify that additional protection for me please.
Elvis, why would I waste my time doing that? Your smarter than 99% of all the medical researchers in the world, so you can handle that.
The study was done Feb-Apr, you lying douchebag.
"College Campuses Have the Craziest COVID-19 Restrictions of All"
Well, they typically have the craziest of the lefty crazies.
Cult
Eh, I'm not worried. Typically one views one's college years in retrospect as an aberration.
No more terrifying than the insane beliefs that apparently were instilled into you during your college years, Soave.
US universities have been in the hands of neo-Marxists and progressives since the late 1980's. And it's too late to do anything about it.
And it’s too late to do anything about it.
Employers need to stop advertising that a college degree is required and devise other methods of evaluation. Professional organizations also need to end their requirements for accredited coursework and rely on testing for the demonstration of skills.
In the age of COVID, I look at a degree as an impediment. These students can hardly be focused on anything other than rote learning of the topics and four years of indoctrination is a tremendous burden to training. But most importantly, they are maintaining the market for this kind of institutional abuse, and there is no excuse for that.
Public school kids may not be able to protest effectively, but college students sure as hell can.
>>and devise other methods of evaluation
exactly.
Employers need to…
Stop there.
So you and others can determine what employers, the economy as a whole need to do. The opposite would be free market capitalism. In which no individuals or groups could possibly determine outcomes.
So you and others can determine what employers, the economy as a whole need to do. The opposite would be free market capitalism.
Oh, go fuck yourself. I said no such thing.
The whole point of my suggestion was that individual employers determine what best qualifies an individual for their individual job position instead of relying on a university's claim that a student was actually educated the in the subject described on the degree.
Typically, at least 50% of a course of study are outside the major. A student can get straight A's in Indoctrination 110, Transgender Studies 215 and Advanced Marxist Studies 418, while barely passing all their math and science courses and still obtain a BS.
“The whole point of my suggestion was that individual employers determine what best qualifies an individual for their individual job position “
Did you not think that was happening all along?
You propose that employers “need to do” something. A change you proposed. You have a better suggestion.
“Employers need to stop advertising that a college degree is required and devise other methods of evaluation. Professional organizations also need to end their requirements for accredited coursework and rely on testing for the demonstration of skills.”
So you have a better idea of the workforce marketplace than the one that exists. It extends beyond that to ‘professional organizations’ which would include what.
So professional boards in engineering, medicine, dentistry, veterinary, law, applied physics, whatever. They been doing it wrong. You just figured out what happens after a mere BA. Well good luck to you. The path is there.
The system that exists does so because of government intervention at nearly every level of the employment process, sometimes at the behest of professional organizations (looking at you AIA and AMA) in order for older established providers to squeeze out younger new providers. It’s hardly a free market.
Oh, and it’s called an opinion. Nowhere in his post did he advocate or imply that the government should get involved. You’re being about as obtuse as Jeff.
The AMA does not issue any professional certifications. It has nothing to do with admissions criteria to medical schools or residencies.
The greatest degree of government control happens on the state level. State boards have enormous power to issue or deny licenses.
A college degree is not required for admission in law or medicine. The professional schools have broad discretion in admissions criteria. Last I saw Kim Kardashian was skipping law school altogether in her goal to take the bar exam. She is pursuing her own education with tutors.
The AMA does not issue any professional certifications
It just provides the guidelines for the state boards that do, which they follow almost uniformly.
Did you not think that was happening all along?
I stated as much. Employers place way too much emphasis on a degree. They use it as a screening tool and eliminate a huge pool of candidates.
You propose that employers “need to do” something. A change you proposed. You have a better suggestion.
Do you realize how pretentious your attitude is?
So professional boards in engineering, medicine, dentistry, veterinary, law, applied physics, whatever. They been doing it wrong.
Yes, that is the argument I made.
1) You are not actually making a counterargument, you are just appealing to the boards' authority.
2) You know damn well these boards' have succumbed to mission creep and, even to the extent that they serve the needs of their existing membership, are maintaining cartels.
The AICPA, which has existed since 1887 did not recommend that the states require a degree to sit for the CPA exam until around 2000. Now every state requires 150 credit hours before awarding the certification. Yet only 24 hours need to be in actual accounting courses and many states do not even require the degree be in accounting or even in business. Seriously, WTF?
3) You completely ignored the context of my comment. When getting a degree is more about following the rules of the university than learning the subject matter, it becomes a pretty lousy metric of an applicants ability to perform in that field. Businesses who fail to account for that will suffer from a competitive disadvantage.
Well then they will suffer a competitive disadvantage if that is true. In a shrinking workforce we are seeing that happening already. Also we are seeing that various business and industry will adapt.
This occurs without any external direction.
Yes the American College of Surgery is a guild. A very elite guild. It exists for one reason. It imparts trust. A trusted brand name.
These organizations tend to be self regulating when they over regulate. Or not in which case they are subject to civil suite.
The other choice is for government to take over.
It is not for me to tell them or anyone else what they need to do.
Leaving aside for the moment, that you completely ignored the bulk of what I said, particularly the criticisms of your last post,
This occurs without any external direction.
When did I ever suggest otherwise? I was offering advice, not suggesting it be dictated by fiat.
These organizations tend to be self regulating when they over regulate. Or not in which case they are subject to civil suite.
You offer no evidence of the the first claim and the second is patently false. As you pointed out, they don't issue certifications. They can't be sued, although the boards that adopt their recommendations can.
The other choice is for government to take over.
A false dichotomy and a giant leap. The daily double.
It is not for me to tell them or anyone else what they need to do.
1) Yes it is, if you are a member of their organization.
2) What is wrong with calling out cartels (or guilds if you want to continue to be pretentious) for what they are? To the extent they have an effect on the general public, we have a civic duty to do so.
My contention is that what an employer or a professional guild does is as much of the market as anything else. There is no way for me or anyone else to sit here and tell any of them what they need to do to stay competitive.
what an employer or a professional guild does is as much of the market as anything else
I completely agree as to employers, but the history of economics has quite a bit to say regarding cartels (guilds). They tend to distort the market, particularly when enforced by government, like say, the state Boards of Accountancy, who require 126 credit hours of education that may be completely unrelated to accounting just to obtain the standing to sit for the exam that is the actual test of skills.
Your girlfriend's birthday is coming up, but you are one of those who are wondering. Where can I get beautiful birthday messages for my girlfriend in 2021? It has happened to all of us at some point, and I have to tell you that you are in the right place.
Thinking about it, we have made a compilation of some nice birthday phrases for your girlfriend that you can find on the net.
https://bit.ly/3hoSXQ0
If you offer a birthday card that tells my girl that she is the most special woman in the world, I’ll take five of them.
Just as fucked up as a football bat. These students don't seem to realize all they get out of many schools is the name. They get shit for an education. That bachelor's degree means little except as entrance for higher degree programs and certain professions. Brown, Brown...same as the color of shit. Just wasting big bucks going to schools that treat their students like special education elementary school kids.
Last I checked, these students, while foolish for borrowing hundreds of thousands of dollars for the privilege of being treated like a baby, are still adults with actual constitutional rights and don’t need Brown’s permission to meet with friends for a meal off campus. The phrase ‘go.pound sand’ comes to mind.
The irony to the whole thing is that frequent testing of asymptomatic vaccinated people (compared to only occasional testing of the unvaccinated, and only when they are sick) will make it look like breakthrough infections are even more common than they really are. The 1% false positive rate on testing alone will make it look like there is a constant stream of breakthrough infections.
Don't test people daily/weekly unless they are high risk. Otherwise it will just create a panic with the false positives since people don't seem to understand statistics in the clown world we live in.
Very good post.
