New York City Adopts Vaccine Passports
Mayor Bill de Blasio's "Key to NYC" initiative will require people to get their shots in order to enter the city's bars, restaurants, gyms, and other indoor venues.

America is getting its first real vaccine passports. On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that, soon, proof of vaccination will be required to enjoy the city's bars, restaurants, gyms, and concert venues.
"We know that strong, clear mandates help," said de Blasio during a press conference announcing his "Key to NYC" initiative. "If you're vaccinated, you have the key. You can open the door. If you're unvaccinated, unfortunately, you will not be allowed to participate in many things."
The new rules apply to customers and workers alike.
The mayor's policy goes far beyond the city's vaccination efforts thus far, which have been limited to positive incentives, like a $100 reward for getting vaccinated, or more targeted vaccine requirements aimed at healthcare workers and new city government hires.
Some restaurants and fitness centers, including Equinox and SoulCycle, have already required their members to get vaccinated.
The policy will go into effect on August 16. The mayor said that city inspections of businesses to ensure enforcement of the new rules will begin in early September.
The reaction from the business interests who'll have to enforce this new mandate has been mixed.
"Mandating vaccine requirements for restaurant and bar employees and customers to work and dine indoors is a very difficult step but ultimately may prove an essential move," said Andrew Rigie, head of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, in a statement. It could prevent even more burdensome "shut down orders that would again absolutely devastate small businesses that have not yet recovered from the pandemic," he added.
The National Restaurant Association (NRA), in contrast, came out against the new requirement.
"Checking vaccination status isn't like ID-ing a customer before serving them a drink," Larry Lynch, the NRA's senior vice president of science and industry, told NBC. "Now, without training, our staff members are expected to check the vaccine status of every customer wanting to eat inside the establishment."
Those opposed to vaccine passports might also be concerned that the policy will soon spread to other jurisdictions. That's something de Blasio is banking on.
"We're seeing California follow suit. We're seeing the federal government follow suit," he said at today's press conference in reference to the city's past pandemic policies.
The COVID-19 vaccines are a real miracle of modern medicine. Their recipients, while still vulnerable to infection, face almost no risk of serious illness or death.
People who decline to get vaccinated at this point might not be making a wise decision. Nevertheless, it's themselves and other unvaccinated people that they're principally putting at risk.

How exactly will people be able to prove this? Oh, I've got an idea! Howsabout a mark. A tattoo maybe. But where to put it so people can see? I know! Forehead! (or in the case of Christina Ricci fivehead) And it needs to be something easily recognized. Maybe a number. Three digits are easy to recognize and remember, especially if they're all the same. Now what number would work best...? 777! Yeah! You're mom's CHMOD is 777! Full access!
Lol.
I used to prank call the computer lab for CS majors. They'd pick up and I'd say "Your mom's CHMOD is 777! Full access!" and hang up.
I wouldn't expect them to give the user write access.
It's Mom. She knows everything anyway.

Once they contract with some tech firm to build tracking for this, it will never go away. The vested interests will make sure they don't ever get put out of business.
This isn't a slippery slope. Once you turn it on you will never be able to turn it off.

Superstitious, gullible, anti-social, disaffected clingers are among my favorite culture war casualties.
I don’t know why you disparage Democrats so much.

Cuckland, why are your people so hellbent on keeping black people from interacting in society again?

Not that I've noticed. So why are you lying about it?
Their rhetoric for certain issues is straight up the “bigotry of low expectations”. And they 100% were/are the supporters of eugenics.
You didn't answer the question.
Why are you lying about it?
GOOD POINT. If a certain groups aren't smart enough to get ID to vote how will they ever get a vaccine passport.
Until those culture war casualties start causing actual casualties.
Which is exactly what's going to happen on a very large scale if this crap continues.
Hey, you’re the one who supports these people.
How exactly will people be able to prove this?
Probably with something like a driver's license.
It ain't rocket science.... Dumbo.
Libertarian moment.
"We know that strong, clear mandates help,"
I couldn’t agree more. Let’s start with prison sentences for elected officials who knowingly violate the constitution.
Only fags are into mandates.
Wow, not cool. Keep your homophobia out of civilized society.
How about public hangings or guillotining? At this point, the amount of tyranny that has been inflicted on the population warrants much worse than impeachments or prison.
Public hangings are an insane escalation. Vaccine passports are wrong (only if government does it. Private actors Walmart, Costco can do whatever they want) but let's not go hanging people. That can turn on you fast.
I whole heatedly disagree. And I'm talking about way more than just this latest NYC mandated vaccines (which 100% justify DeBlasio's head in a bucket). Look at everything that has happened in the last 18 months or so in terms of absurd levels of government overreach and unprecedented extreme encroachments in curtailing the freedoms of people and businesses.
We have had extreme restrictions of the freedom of movement, restrictions on earning a living, cancellation of mutually agreed upon private contracts (eviction/foreclosure moratoriums), expropriation of private property (again, eviction foreclosure/moratoriums), horribly destructive monetary policy, mass psychological child abuse (no in person schooling), the government is now colluding with supposedly private media companies to censor information and not even hiding it anymore, questionable elections with illegally changed voting laws/procedures all supposedly in the name of public health.
This is tolerable in a supposedly free country? Do you see any non-violent way to restore or even stop this rapidly enroaching transition to tyranny? I don't, there will be a lot of blood spilled or we will all end up permanently being freedomless serfs in the name of public health.
Correct
"Let’s start with prison sentences for elected officials who knowingly violate the constitution."
That would put the entire Republican party behind bars.
Sad though that Tardieboys like you just can't figure out what is and isn't constitutional.
The republicans have certainly violated the constitution, but mostly by acting as democrat lite. Sorry but tariffs and enforcing border/immigration laws are constitutional regardless if they are good or bad policy. Eviction moratoriums, stimulus, gold plated unemployment checks, etc... do not stem from a single enumerated federal power and are thus unconstitutional. Lockdowns at any level of government are a clear violation without due process of the 5th amendment protection on liberty. Trump did engage in all those (to a lesser extent than Biden is, but still) which is why I decided to waste my vote on 3rd party as opposed to holding my nose and vote for him as an "anybody but a democrat/communist" vote.
What have republicans done that is unconstitutional that democrats haven't done harder?
Presidents violate the constitution because the democratic process and Cathedral-dominated culture require them to. Any third party president with the sociopathy, connections, and owed favors needed to win election would be no more respectful of the constitution than Rs or Ds.
The constitution is a relic of naive Enlightenment thought whose codification of materialist universal values ensured its own obsolescence. Values such as property rights, freedom of association, etc are culturally and racially specific to the WASP societies in which they originated. The great mistake of many of the founders and their liberal, classical or otherwise, descendents is their belief that these values can be adopted by Afghan goatherders or black criminals. They are fundamentally pre-Cathedral, northern European values with little appeal to the majority of humankind. Indeed many of them, like the idea that the state can act as a morally-neutral objective arbiter between antagonistic citizens and their respective tribes, have never been consistently practiced by ANY group and are mere utopian fantasies.
I completely agree that western judeo christian values are far superior to any other value system. And any significantly different value system is inherently incompatible with the US constitution as it was founded. However, the various countries known as the asian tigers illustrate that other cultures can embrace these values. But, since the asian tigers were mostly injected with these values through western influence from colonization and imperialism, that is a case in that you are possibly correct that such values will not rise by themselves from drastically different cultures. Also makes you wonder if the libertarian position of defense only isolationism is only good in theory but in practice meddling and colonizing more primitive areas actually improves them considerably in the long run.

So how many progressives are you planning to murder?
Yawn
Your an idiot.
To progressives, it's a winning message.
What is missing from the "mandate" discussions is that the 12% of the population that has had Covid-19 already have immunity. They don't need to be vaccinated. I have a client that has medical conditions making vaccination a risk. She had Covid in August 2020 and has tested positive for anti-bodies. Why should she be required to be jabbed and show a "passport?"
I've been vaccinated, but would not be thrilled with the Stasi demanding my papers.
How did you handle it when the school required vaccination papers for you or for your children?
Those are proven long standing vaccines for actual dangerous diseases that can harm children.
You’re trying to use logic on a retarded prog cultist. That never ends well. Best to take him to the vet and put him down.
You need to chill Mark. There are going to be people who deal with COVID differently than you.
Correct, different people will deal with COVID differently than Mark (or anyone else). Same goes with any other tradeoff in life. Mandatory vaccines required to participate in huge parts of society are completely incompatible with this view that one size doesn't fit all and people should make up their own minds regarding risks, benefits and tradeoffs.
Mumps, rubella, and chicken pox are self limiting and rarely cause complications in children.
Rubella has actually been eliminated in the US
Like Corona they make your kid sick and are no fun. They also have to be isolated. Much less frequently than adults, but it can be serious. When a kid gets Corona their contacts have to be tested and they often close the classroom. It takes a minimum of 3 days after exposure for a valid test.
I suspect in a few years it will just be routine like the others.
The vaccines have not been approved by the FDA. The vaccines my children have for school have decades of data analysis outlining safety and risk factors.
How about a response to the requirement that people that have had Covid-19 get vaccinated?
After the FDA grants its inevitable approval of the Pfizer vaccine (and likely Moderna and J&J shortly thereafter), what will be the excuse du jour for the holdouts?
The same as it is during cold and flu season?
Which, in my opinion, is what corona is going to end up settling in at.
Agreed, and IMO Delta looks like a big step in that direction.
I find it interesting the array of excuses people come up with on this issue; I wish they'd just say "because I don't want to" instead of rationalizing what is by any objective standard a riskier decision than the alternative.
We’ve cowed people into submission enough over the last five-ten years that they’re not willing to say that part out loud.
It's an unnecessary medical procedure
So's a colonoscopy. Doesn't make it a bad idea.
Colonoscopies aren’t experimental.
And yet.
Not to mention the anesthesia risk.
Some of us haven't reached the colonoscopy stage of our lives yet
Lol. The issue with not getting a vaccine is that you're harming other people. You're free to shoot yourself but not free to shoot others.
That's illogical too. If someone is not vaccinated and you are, you are supposedly safe, right? So why care?
If other people are not vaccinated then they have to be responsible for their own welfare. If others, for medical reasons, can't vaccinate then they are responsible for their safety in whatever measure it needs to be taken.
The false logic in all of this is the government presented the vaccine as an eradicator when in fact it is the equivalent of the flu shot, not a vaccine but a pre-emptive load of the virus in order for the body to build the immunities before the full load hits.
Like the flu and influenza virus Corona will keep coming. People will die of it.
We can't beat Mother Nature.
You are harming the multinationals by not purchasing their product
Bingo!!
Safer, not safe.
None of them give you a “load of the virus”. They give you a specific protein which will then be recognized by your immune system.
The flu shot is only about 50% effective and changes from year to year. These are well over 90% effective at lab detected infection and much more effective in preventing severe disease.
Some people were talking about eradication in terms of herd immunity. I have always had my doubts about that. We will probably need boosters.
"The issue with not getting a vaccine is that you’re harming other people. You’re free to shoot yourself but not free to shoot others."
Oh?
Well if that's the case, expect to be shot soon, you collectivist parasite.

How many progressives are you planning to murder?
You are a pathetic coward.
oooh FDA I'm convinced
Now that's a properly libertarian take. But I commonly hear/read, "but it's not FDA approved!" among people who in any other context wouldn't actually give a shit.
They may not give a shit but what they're saying is also true. Comparing vaccines that have been around for decades to this one is quite a stretch. Besides, a libertarian take flies right over people who think mandates and coercion are good ideas.
There is nothing inconsistent in believing that the FDA is generally too overly cautious and slow to approve, yet also was possibly not cautious enough and too fast to approve "emergency" use in this particular case
Vaccine mandates are a bad idea. Darwin want's as many people with low IQ's dead as is possible.
That will devastate the AmeriKKKan right.
When De Blasio requires all NYC school teachers to be vaccinated or lose their jobs, then we'll know he's serious. (At the moment, NYC school teachers can either get the vaccine or be tested weekly.)
And in a plot twist nobody saw coming, the NYC teachers union has come out against the mandate.
I didn’t already contract and recover from the things you need a vaccine for to go to school.

There is no data showing that those who have had covid have the same or even close to the same level of protection as the vaccinated.
LOL! What a stupid stance to take.
The human body is going to be stronger against a virus that it actually experienced than a fake one, not the other way around.
https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/lasting-immunity-found-after-recovery-covid-19
That says there is a continuing immune response up to 8 months after. That is far different from saying that those who had covid can safely skip the vaccine.
Are you going to keep saying that as you forever move the goalposts?
This anti-science idiot completely ignores that only like 15 people in the us have gotten covid twice over the last 18 months.
I was going to ask. I wonder how many unvaccinated people have had multiple covid infections, vs. the amount of covid "breakthrough" infections. I suspect the data shows natural immunity is stronger.
It does. Molly is an idiot lefty troll.

"forever move the goalposts?"
Saying that there is a continuing immune response up to 8 months after. That is far different from saying that those who had covid can safely skip the vaccine.
You be a stupid boy.
Do they have 8-months-out data for any of those vaccines yet? It's just ridiculous to think that any vaccine could give better immunity than the natural immunity it's trying to mimic.
It is hilarious that the left, whose highest value is clearly obedience, is now in the position where they claim people who have had and recovered from a virus are less resistant to it than those who've had a vaccine.
Apparently nobody on the left is aware of how the human body works, nor how vaccines operate...
nobody on the left is aware of how anything works
Au contraire, my friend. They're very knowledgeable in how deflect and redirect works. Note how this thread started with the Rev's almost seamless deflection and redirection.
Well, COVID does give only soft immunity. Reinfection is possible after a relatively short period of time.
Hitting it multiple times is a belt-and-suspenders approach to ensure long term immunity (essentially, a 3-stage vaccine instead of 2-stage). That's my reasoning for getting the vaccine after being sick.

Look at the resident medical expert who doesn't know that "immune response" = antibodies. CoV2 antibodies are what the vaccine gives people who haven't been infected already. But people whoa already have antibodies, need the vaccine...to get antibodies they already documentedly have? Yeaaa. This ain't rocket science.
This could be the most anti-science stance ever put on Reason.
So let them decide for themselves
You're a retard.
The scientific illiteracy on display is appalling.
There is:
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01442-9
You don't know how long vaccine immunity lasts either. I would bet natural immunity lasts much longer.
Are you kidding? They've had over eight months to test the durability of vaccine immunity. They've only had 20 or so months to test immunity gained from prior infection. Obviously with that time frame we can definitively state that the costly vaccinations are effective and shrug our expert shoulders about free natural immunity.
The vaccines are going for around $25 per dose. I copay more than that for a month supply of my blood pressure pills. That is cheap actually. Because the governments, all of them are negotiating with the manufacturers for big orders, it lowers the costs. You don’t pay anything except indirectly in taxes, actually more likely government debt.
The cost of those who have had to be and will be hospitalized is far more expensive per person than the vaccine.
"I would bet natural immunity lasts much longer." - ADL
Yes, the universe respects your expectations because you are the king of stupid.
"What is this immune system people keep talking about? Must mean they're stupid!"
There is no data showing that the vaccines work as well or better than natural immunity either.
But there is data showing that vaccination provides a greater level of immune response.
You can get COVID multiple times because immunity wears off over time. If a private property owner asks for papers, that's fine. If the gov mandates asking for papers, that's wrong.
"The National Restaurant Association (NRA), in contrast, came out against the new requirement."
They're just tools of the kitchenware lobby anyway.
Plus, their membership has been cut by a third last year.
This will finish off another third.
The headline lacks the kind of instinctive vitriolic hatred that libertarians should have for such a policy. Is the article even arguing against this?
Yea, I didn't see the word "unconstitutional" anywhere in the article.
"Yea, I didn’t see the word “unconstitutional” anywhere in the article."
Perhaps that is because your personal opinion on what the U.S. constitution says is dramatically at odds with constitutional law.

You and White Mike constantly defend this site as not being a news site, but an opinion site.

This is why Reason is pure shit.

Dumbass.
+1000000
Kinder gentler statism is the the Reason version of liberty.
It really has become that.
"Is the article even arguing against this?"
Nope.
But what do you expect?
There is no way to "both sides" this one and it's way too early for a "Conservatives pounce" angle. Never mind that conservatives in NYC are a the socially acceptably suppressed minority.
So the only option available in the Reason Stylebook is an anodyne reporting of the basic facts.
In before Park Slope Welchie Boy writes his one hundredth piece in the last couple of years whining about how much living in New York sucks ass, while not leaving to go someplace else, despite the fact that he could n a New York minute (so to speak).
Good point. I mean, people should choose where they live purely on local politics. If they don't like the local politics then they have no grounds for complaint because they still live there. If they really cared they'd have moved away, run for office to change things, or killed a bunch of people. Being that Matt has done none of the above (I'm actually not sure if he's run for office) then he must accept everything without complaint.
Right?
Expect for people too poor to escape. There we go with the systemic racism again.
Except for...
If you're in a place with a total, complete, and unbreakable political monopoly and absolutely zero chance of changing things in any way, and your own political views and self interest are diametrically opposed to that of the unbreakable monopoly, then yeah you should move.
This isn't the same as threatening to move because you don't like one lady on the school board, or because you got too many parking tickets or something.
You expect people with families and lives and all that stuff to just uproot because that's the only way to prove to you that they really care about politics?
Welchie boy questioning the wisdom of the unvaccinated despite having yet another dick stuck in his face and 'getting tricked' into sucking every New York politician and public health official's dick for the last 18 mos.
Don't encourage him to leave! If he wants to support progressive policies let him live in a progressive location. Self-selection is a feature of liberty.
People who decline to get vaccinated at this point might not be making a wise decision.
Reason as the antithesis of wisdom. *drinks*
What is wise about refusing to get vaccinated? Seriously.
What is wise about continuing to accept the decrees of people who've not only proven themselves to be incompetent, but dangerously incompetent? Seriously.
I don't trust politicians, and that includes that Fauci asshole.
However I seriously doubt there's some global conspiracy to trick everyone into taking a useless vaccine. My 80-someodd year old aunt listens to talk radio and thinks the injection is microchipped. She's high risk but won't get the shot because she believes shitheads on FOX news. I know several people who've had COVID, and while it wasn't life threatening it wasn't a walk in the park either. They were all under 45.
So unless you're trying to make a political statement or something equally stupid, I see no good excuse to not get jabbed. Sure you may not be at risk, but you could expose someone who is.
But everything has to be political.
However I seriously doubt there’s some global conspiracy to trick everyone into taking a useless vaccine.
Not necessarily a deliberate intent to decieve, but the conspiracy is overt. Much like the ACA and Iraq War. Rumsfeld, Gruber, Fauci... would you say that going along with whatever any of them say is wise?
My 80-someodd year old aunt listens to talk radio and thinks the injection is microchipped. She’s high risk but won’t get the shot because she believes shitheads on FOX news. I know several people who’ve had COVID, and while it wasn’t life threatening it wasn’t a walk in the park either. They were all under 45.
I've mentioned this before but my 70-some-odd-yr.-old aunt is a cancer survivor who's been on dialysis for years. She caught COVID the Friday before Christmas and hosted it the next weekend. Nobody caught it. Her oldest son, in his upper 40s, tested positive the first week of February and missed 2 days of work.
Do people who actually got COVID get a passport? If not, where's the wisdom in that? If so, can't anybody just claim they had it and get a passport? Either way, the policy is much closer to abjectly stupid than wise.
But everything has to be political.
Yup. You could do you and I could do me but de Blasio has to mandate that that isn't acceptable. And, like a fool, you have to defend his wisdom.
And, like a fool, you have to defend his wisdom.
When did I say people should be forced to be vaccinated or be excluded from society if they refuse?
Fuck off you lying bag of dicks.
Says the liar.
Multiple people infer what you are saying as what though are saying and you claim other people are misunderstanding you. Maybe at some point realize it is you.
Then quote me where I said what you say I'm saying.
It's a Mott-and-Bailey of presuppositions: "When did you stop beating your wife?"/"When did I say you beat your wife."
Sarc: "What is wise about refusing to get vaccinated?"
Me: "The wisdom isn't about getting vaccinated, the wisdom is subverting the will of tyrants."
Sarc: "I didn't say anything about tyranny? Who mentioned tyranny? I was just suggesting that doing as tyrants command could be a wise decision."
My mom is 85 and very conservative. She listens to the right wing stuff. She is an educated woman well versed in medical issues and smart enough to get the vaccine when it came out.
Obviously we're not cousins.
Tell us more about how the possibility of covid originating in a lab is a ridiculous conspiracy theory, and how hcq and ivermectin are totes ineffective treatments.
And why do I suspect your "very conservative" mother has voted straight D her whole life...
At 85, my decision-making might be different, especially if I had other health issues. The one thing that has stayed constant throughout this sorry episode is that the virus is most harsh on the old and/or the already sick. It's not kids, it's not spring breakers, it's not even the average 45 year old.
Fauci is an asshole, and I will blindly do whatever he tells me with out a single critical or logical thought in my head
-sarc
Everyone I’ve seen on Fox endorses the vaccine liar.

I'd say science says long term side effects from vaccines are unlikely but I haven't researched the politics of the scientists. After all, the truth of their words can only be discovered by party allegiance, not stupid facts or observations. Nobody gives a shit about that. Politics is all that matters.
exactly. politics is all that matters is why I'm always vaccine-wary.
Comparing a new mRNA vaccine to 50plus year old vaccine technology is stupid.*
Doubly so when you collectivize everyone who hasn’t gotten the vaccine as some kind of anti-science idiot who is letting their politics cloud their judgement.
(I know we’ve been studying mRNA vaccines for a while, but it is my understanding that we hadn’t gotten a vaccine to actually work.)
The Dr. that invented the technology behind the vaccines says sarc is full of shit.
Forgot the link:

(I know we’ve been studying mRNA vaccines for a while, but it is my understanding that we hadn’t gotten a vaccine to actually work.)
The use of mRNA has been attempted in numerous other applications and has widely failed specifically because of both acute and long term effects.
"nobody knows."
No, little boy. You don't know and you project your willful ignorance on others.
nobody knows *and* it's mostly unnecessary.
How about people just making their own decisions based on available data? The re-organization of society based on risks to groups who choose not to get vaccinated is simply not reasonable.
"What is wise about refusing to get vaccinated? Seriously."
None of your business, lefty shit. Fuck off and die.
Because I'm a healthy young adult and the virus has a 99.996% survival rate, and I don't trust a single one of the people pushing this vaccine on us, nor do their fascist tactics make me want to trust them any more.
So the entire worldwide medical industry is in on the conspiracy?
I love that it’s always got to be a grand conspiracy with y’all. Like separate groups of people couldn’t all be working towards the same goal without coordination.
"the virus has a 99.996% survival rate"
Liar, Liar... Pants on fire.
Your lie doesn't even stand up to simple math.
There have been 35 million confirmed cases in the U.S. with 0.6 million deaths.
So the death rate is 0.017, not 0.004 as you dishonestly claimed.
So why do you feel a need to lie about it?
What you’re claiming is the Case Fatality Rate, not the Infection Fatality Rate.
Just based off of the science of viral spread, the number of infections is actually around 140 million. (This is not controversial.)
614000/140000000 = .004*100 = 0.4%
So two jabs, 4-6 weeks apart to get a vaccine 'passport', and they are against voter id?
I'm sure the ability of people from all up and down the Eastern Seaboard to enter a New York business and prove they're vaccinated will be bulletproof. Filthy fucking undocumented immigrants.
Can I still work in the kitchen without proof? That could be that thing that kills the restaurants.
No, they will somehow find a way to ensure valid vaccination while never quite being able to verify work status.
" Filthy fucking undocumented immigrants."
Hate is the base motivation of all Republicans and Libertarians.
That was sarcasm.
I've got no problem with immigrants from Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Virginia... visiting (or even working at) bars, restaurants, and businesses in New York with or without vaccination papers.
I'd make an innocent crack about "Well, maybe not New Jersey." but it seems that you're more prejudiced to hate people for where their from than I am.
Nah, they're consistent. They don't want voter IDs that are actually resistant to forgery, and they don't want vaccine passports that are actually resistant to forgery, either.
Seriously, it takes under five minutes to Google Image Search "vaccine card" and print one out.
Why does de Blasio hate black people so much?
"People who decline to get vaccinated at this point might not be making a wise decision."
Says the pro-drug use, pro-prostitution libertarian progressives.
There's a difference between saying "People shouldn't be jailed for drugs and prostitution" and saying "Woo hoo I'm gonna shoot up some heroin while three hookers fight over which one gets to be the cowgirl!"
So is de Blasio saying "People shouldn't be jailed for being unvaccinated." or is he saying "It's a bad idea for fully-vaccinated homos from New York to be triple teaming each other in Provincetown."?
I was responding to "Says the pro-drug use, pro-prostitution libertarian progressives."
OK, answer the question I asked. Is de Blasio saying "No one should go to jail over this." or is he saying "I'm going to legislate peoples' personal and moral choices under penalty of law."?
Whatever your answer, how do you rectify it with the "They're all liars." sentiment below?
Liars sometimes tell the truth. Like when suggestions become threats. And I already said I don't trust these people. What do you want me to say?
No shirt, no shoes, no vaccine passport, no service.
It ain't rocket science, dumbo.
No shirt, no shoes, no vaccine passport, no service.
When was the last time you saw a shirt/shoes/service sign? You do realize that at least one narrative holds that the policy was widely held specifically to disciminate against poor blacks who didn't own shoes, right?
Man, between your hatred of immigrants and your hatred of black people it gets hard to talk about anything without you announcing your shame.
"When was the last time you saw a shirt/shoes/service sign?" - Mad.Little.Retard
Yesterday.
Do you seriously not remember "Nobody is seriously considering or implementing vaccine passports."?
How wise can you be if you don't even remember the last 18 mos.?
No one wants to teach critical race theory in the schools.
Except the NEA who are merely acting like Republicans defined them.
Do you seriously not remember “Nobody is seriously considering or implementing vaccine passports.”?
I remember politicians saying "blah blah blah this is my conviction until something more politically expedient comes along blah blah blah."
I don't listen to that shit. It's not like they mean any of it.
So what you're saying is this isn't the end of it and it would be unwise to believe them and/or assume that it is?
I don't have a crystal ball that tells me the future, but I'd bet on what you said being correct.
“Nobody is seriously considering or implementing vaccine passports.”?
The world changes, as do the responses to how the world has changed.
Awwwwwwww... You can't figure it out can you... Low IQ Libertarian.
Social shunning and removing people from public life is fine as long as it isn't directly jailing a person?
Have you bothered to study Maoist China?
MY BODY, MY CHOICE.
Remember that?
That is so 1987, dude. Keep up.
It's now my body, government's choice.
Might as well go on about content of character.
"MY BODY, MY CHOICE."
No shirt. No shoes. No Vaccination. No Service.
Remember that.
You intentionally left out the rest of the paragraph:
>Nevertheless, it's themselves and other unvaccinated people that they're principally putting at risk.
This is a very libertarian, and very reasonable, liberal, pro-individual rights statement. Whether or not you or I think someone is wise, if they aren't harming me, their decision is their decision.
We should be encouraging mixing as much as possible right now. Unvaccinated will get exposed, one way or another, so just let people live their lives. If hospitals aren't overrun, it won't matter to those who already have immunity at all because risks for them now are lower than typical, pre-covid, normally circulating virus.
This is a very libertarian, and very reasonable, liberal, pro-individual rights statement.
In defense of a government mandating who can and cannot enter a business? You're as retarded as Welch.
We should be encouraging mixing as much as possible right now. Unvaccinated will get exposed, one way or another, so just let people live their lives.
So you don't even agree with Welch's 'wisdom'? A classic distinction between fools and wise men is that wise men have principles.
Accidentally flagged you. Apologies.
Oh joy, a troll putting words in my mouth.
I addressed that statement, and that statement alone. And I was quite clear.
I am annoyed at picking and choosing which part of a thought someone states to make a point. If OP wants to find a reason to disagree with the author, choose a real reason. Don't manufacture it.
But, you know you're doing that with me right now. Not even leaving anything out, just setting up straw men and knocking them over.
I addressed that statement, and that statement alone. And I was quite clear.
I am annoyed at picking and choosing which part of a thought someone states to make a point.
Read those two sentences and then think real hard. Then, once you get it, think about Welch saying, in multiple sentences, as a single/aggregated thought: "Vaccine passports are terribly oppressive but the unvaccinated should really do what's wise."
"Why can't the Jews just make the wise decision and get on the trains rather than making us waste bullets?"
Does anyone have any numbers on how many unvaccinated have already had or been exposed to the virus, therefore already possess a natural immunity?
Of course not, because the CDC is incompetent.
Also looks as if the person in the picture mostly eschews personal health responsibility
We did antibody tests for like 4 weeks right at the start and they all showed the same thing - the virus was far more widespread than we thought and we had been living with it for months without knowing.
Then we simply STOPPED DOING IT and pretended everybody needed a jab to be safe.
"We" didn't. One enterprising researcher in the bay area did, that I know of. His data was localized, but was what was behind most of the ideas of larger asymptomatic numbers. Maybe others since, I know *some* studies were done. But nothing comprehensive.
I have also seen some congregate testing, like testing sewage flows for estimates, and the like. Again, localized and done by individual research teams.
The federal agencies I don't think ever actually set up a system to study and record who has antibodies. There were problems with that, of course, but at some point they probably should have kept better data, knowing we were in this for the long haul. They should have followed large groups of individuals known to have had a positive PCR test, and I haven't seen any of that, either.
You wonder why wouldn't they have kept track of how many previously infected were vaccinated so we would understand the overlap, either. That seems like pretty valuable information for setting public policy and understanding things like herd immunity, the longevity of natural immunity as variants arise, how to improve outbreak models... hell, a whole bunch of great things to know.
THAT sort of thing -- good data -- is what the CDC is supposedly for. Feels like they dropped the ball on that one. Th really sad thing is, I think it's just the CDC being genuinely incompetent. It's an agency full of doctors who are great at the microscope, but really shitty at the big picture.
NYC was doing them like clockwork every week up until 25% of the people had antibodies and it was obvious we already missed millions of cases.
they probably should have kept better data, knowing we were in this for the long haul.
Abject mission failure on the part of the CDC as far as I'm concerned. They would sacrifice everything America stands for and beyond (conceptually up to the point of the entire human race) to prevent an amount of death that America (or the human race) has tolerated and more readily tolerates into the future.
I was able to get an antibody test at my local grocery store earlier in the year. Now they don’t have them available. They looked at me like I had a third eye for asking.
The last time I donated blood they threw in the antibody test for free. I'd like to do it again to see if I still have them seven months post-vax, but nope.
All just a coincidence I’m sure. No concerted effort.
Given the construction
People who X point might not be making a wise decision.
and the following choices:
- decline to get vaccinated at this
- take hard drugs
- take marijuana
- do sex work
- pay for sex work
which on is most likely to do long term harm to
- themselves
- their family
- society
?
Which of them does Reason say is hunky, dory AOK?
All of them?
There are qualitative differences in their approach to each.
Some issues associated with un-vaccinated people getting infected, sick, hospitalized and dying (excluding compassion)
1) If the hospitals are over-run those of us who are vaccinated but sick from something else might not get an ICU bed
2) The longer COVID sticks around in a large number of people the more chance it has to mutate further. One of those mutations could be worse than Delta.
If there was no risk (or little risk) to the vaccinated community (as well as people with immune system problems) from the un-vaccinated, I'd agree an unvaccinated person should go ahead and risk their own health just like for those smoking, drinking etc. (Note smoking and drinking doesn't fill up hospital beds as fast as COVID). However, going un-vaccinated is more like spewing smoke into someone's face or drinking while driving. It's not completely harmless to the rest of the community.
However, I think we should leave the decision on vaccine card checks to the businesses themselves. New York can mandate what they wish to their own state employees and the feds can do likewise. The card checks aren't very foolproof at all. I think it's more of a psychological ploy.
1) There’s been no risk of hospitals being overrun in about a year. It’s over.
2) Covid will never be gone. Get used to it. It will continue to mutate regardless of how many people get vaccinated.
"We should be encouraging mixing as much as possible" = Pro Mass Death.
600,000 dead Americans is just not enough.
Six million seems like as good a number as any
Huh, I did Nazi that coming.
Just want to see ze papers
Nobody expects The Spanish Inquisition.
It does not matter, the unvaccinated with just lie about their status anyhow.
Who the fuck cares? If they'd rather risk getting covid than getting the vaccine, that's their choice. If you're vaccinated, it doesn't affect you. If you're still scared, wear a damn mask. I've been hearing for 15 months that masks are the greatest goddamned thing on earth for protecting you from getting covid. Is that no longer the case?
It’s a tacit admission that masks don’t go shit and we’re always just theater.
So another ID to do things. Except for voting. Or illegally entering the country on the wide open southern border.
I am actually happy in the sense that democrats are fucking this up so badly that they probably won't get elected for the next 25 years.

Ha!
People won't vote for them but they'll still get elected.

"We know that strong, clear mandates help," said de Blasio
"In particular, they help us increase the power we wield, especially when enforced at the point of a gun."
I really don't understand this. The little card I got was a flimsy piece of cardboard with handwriting on it.
How exactly does that prove anything? And how I am supposed to show it anywhere when it's already falling apart 4 months later
Photoshop is going to be a lot of people's friend going forward.

You assholes at Reason seem to have taken the jab takes precedence over fundamental rights.
I see little has chance since that jerk off Biden was elected. In fact, things got worse it would appear.
It's an abhorrent and despicable measure for a virus with a high survival rate. The fact treatments are being denied only makes this nightmare moral panic worse.
17 months later and this hysteria is in full out of control mode.
Maybe the masks have choked off oxygen to the brains of people. Man are we a weak, gullible, cowardly civilization made up of cucks and corrupted criminals and scientific quacks and incompetent buffoons.
This is what happens when you artificially block natural selection.
Every vaccine or antibiotic. My blood pressure pills, Every medical intervention from orthopedics to neurosurgery or oncology blocks natural selection.
So when the chest pain hits and you are gasping for breath take one for the team. It is natural selection.
It is a mistake to think that. We are animals with a fantastic genetic advantage over other species. So much so that within a year a global effort has developed powerful weapons against a formidable threat. That effort is not over. So who evolves and adapts faster.
“ So who evolves and adapts faster.”

New York Times in April:

Meanwhile in Europe, I should add, they're taking to the streets understanding full damn well where this can lead. Is anyone not paying attention to what's going on in Australia, New Zealand and Israel? Psychos.
Here in North America, we cheer it on it seems. All because of our selfish and self-entitled desire to go watch sell-out cowards like Bruce Springsteen with that shit head Murphy. Suck it the unvaxxed and your natural immunity! You can't go out for dinner wooo! Pay your taxes and shut up!
It's the fraying of the social and economic order and the digital trail left behind will make clear who were the designers and architects of this mass hysteria for posterity. We will be able to easily track and trace back all the crooks, liars and scumbags including the Karens and Kens who were complicit and cheered it all on.
Absolutely this is going down as the greatest medical hysteria episode in history.
In the USA, we also have extremely high vaccination rates compared to most other countries. Which makes it even more bizarre that the left is freaking out over the unvaccinated.
It's only bizarre if you take their claims at face value. You should know better by now.

They know plenty about it. Other than how to stop it.

It really is just some soft conformity on the way to the next wave of eugenics.
So, a situation where you must show your 'travel papers' to move within New York City is apparently not enough of a violation of basic principles of American government to get any kind of vitriol flowing from an ostensibly libertarian rag.
I think you're done here, Reason. The transformation into Salon is complete.
And yeah, you might not need them just to travel, just to go anywhere you might want to go. The rest is sure to follow, I think. After all why stop at just places where you can eat, exercise, or see a show?
If masks are so fucking effective, what's the point? (Oh, right, they aren't and this is a tacit admission of that fact.)
Once again. DeBlasio demonstrates why more and more people have no trust or confidence at all in government, law enforcement, or the judiciary at any level. Would say many unvaccinated have no trust in government, after the way this entire ChiCom Flu thing has so royally been fucked up. Guilting these people is no way to get them to vaccinate. And what happens if someone from out of town wants to go to a restaurant? They aren't New Yorkers, so DeBlasio's bullshit shouldn't apply to them. And if the "passport" is to be on a smartphone, what about those who don't have smartphones, or cell phones at all? Something tells me people are already working on how to game the new system. Fuck DeBlasio.
From "15 days to slow the spread" to "papers please."
I did NOT see that coming. Like, at all.
Who could have?
The tone of this article is an embarrassment.
Science deniers
We know that vaccinated people can harbor and transmit the infection. So why give them special access?
The only person at risk from the unvaccinated person is the unvaccinated person.
It'll tell you something about the awful nature of the press and the Democrats at large if this is what takes Cuomo down, but he gets a pass on killing people.
Our government wants to require everyone to get a vaccine and proper paperwork to go about there lives. I assume everyone will have to go somewhere, an actual location, to get the shot. Then get the proper paperwork for proof they did. Rather that's one or 2 places is irrelevant. Somehow, someway everyone has to physically get there. How are all these poor people of color gonna do that. I mean it's a fact they can't get an ID to vote. Right? How can they do one and not the other
Noted above. This is a racist policy. QED
Why is it just for restaurants, bars, and gyms? Why not grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, etc? I mean if you are really, really serious about this deadly virus, why is the government allowing anyone to step out of their homes? Why are they allowing people on subways? Why are they doing press conferences? Why are they allowing food deliveries.
Let's just lock everyone in their home until all are dead. Let's start with the rule-makers just to see if it makes a difference.
Plus, it doesn't go into effect until August 16th! Do you realize how many people will die between now and then? Shut everyone down now! No leaving your home and no deliveries for three months. That should about take care of things.
Anyone who gets the rona between now and the 16th should sue the mayor for not protecting them..

From what I hear, counterfeit vaccine "passports" are already available. The price is =/- $500, but sure to get lower as the black-market competition heats up.
It could prevent even more burdensome "shut down orders that would again absolutely devastate small businesses that have not yet recovered from the pandemic," he added.
We need this government mandate to stave off that government mandate.
CDC just bailed out the Biden administration, and the Democrats in Congress by issuing a new eviction moratorium through early October.
Libertarian moment, no more mean tweets, yada yada...
Fuck you Reason.
Well, the District Courts are split on this, though IIRC, lean towards the idea that they are not legal. Maybe SCOTUS will step in. But that still won't help the State-level non-eviction orders.
Pretty sure the courts also "lean toward" law enforcement reading and following their express directions...
But, this is where we are.
And nobody in the media seems too interested in holding the Biden administration to any account.
I don't see SCOTUS leaning towards law enforcement on this issue. I am unsure where the cops come into play, anyways. But, at any rate, this happened today. Somehow I bet, at least here at Reason (and probably a couple of other places, too) that this latest move will be pretty thoroughly trashed.
But you are right -- the CDC did not do this without the Sleepy Joe's approval.
Remember when the CDC was little more than a clearing-house for statistics, and not a pawn of whoever lives in the White House?
Time to dismantle the CDC, along with most other federal agencies.
You get right on that.
I'm rooting for you.
LOL. Yeah. I didn't say it WOULD happen. I would settle for "reforming" them, but hey, that is just as about as likely to happen (meaning NOT).
". I am unsure where the cops come into play, anyways."
I was merely referencing the one recent example of the FBI and the deposit boxes.
The feds are grossly unaccountable. Even more so when the politics are aligned with the interests of the elites.
"I was merely referencing the one recent example of the FBI and the deposit boxes."
Noted.
"The feds are grossly unaccountable. Even more so when the politics are aligned with the interests of the elites."
From my perspectives, the government, or a very substantial part of it, is ALWAYS aligned with the interests of the elites. The only thing that changes is the definition of "elite,"
"the government, or a very substantial part of it, is ALWAYS aligned with the interests of the elites. "
Well, that's the rub isn't it? We just went through a phase where the people had something else "in government" only to have that other "substantial part" seek to undermine or thwart the people's chosen representatives.
Mostly because they were not of the proper sort.
And I'm sure they will drop it right in the middle of the completely predictable winter spike across the country. Along with the UI benefits, too!
Money printer go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
It sucks that the vaccine has become political. But once shit like this starts happening, it's political whether we want it to be or not.
So here's what I suggest. Get vaccinated if you decide it's the right thing for you. Then burn your vaccination record card and tell anyone who asks to see it to get fucked.
It was political right from the start, because TRUMP!
" Get vaccinated if you decide it’s the right thing for you. "
My advice: don't be too hasty. If the mayor is serious about getting people vaccinated, he will eventually come up with incentives people are willing to take. $1000 a shot should be enough to attract enough to make passports and quarantines unnecessary.
I lost my vaccination card in a tragic boating accident.
If the city is offering $100 a pop and not getting enough bites, they should bump it up by an order of magnitude. You don't need 100% compliance and the cost of a passport regime would probably be higher in terms of dollars, confusion, time wasting and aggravation.
A small discreet tattoo like those used in some medical procedures might prevent repeating scammers.
And there it is.
++ Perhaps a discrete six-pointed something-or-other? Or perhaps that Buddhist and Navajo thingy?
Something inconspicuous to all but the trained eye as are the tattoos that are used in some medical procedures, is what I had in mind.
An retinal scan or fingerprint could also be done but I thought tattoos were more in the spirit of the times. Would you prefer to have to carry around a passport?
Not on my body. And I won't carry around a passport, either. Didn't SCOTUS say something about forcing people to carry IDs?
(Just so I am not misunderstood: I am fully vaccinated and have been for months, and I think anyone who isn't, with a few exceptions, is acting foolishly. But, from what I glean from what I have read, they are "endangering" only themselves. That is their prerogative. Note: that doesn't mean their employer, generally, has the right to insist upon it)
EDIT: "their employer, generally, DOES have the right to insist upon it."
"And I won’t carry around a passport, either. Didn’t SCOTUS say something about forcing people to carry IDs? "
As I understand, if enough people beyond a certain threshold get vaccinated, then passports and quarantines are unnecessary. What I suggested was upping the incentive if that's what it takes to put us over the threshold. Nobody would be forced to get a vaccine or accept the $1000 incentive for that matter. I don't foresee any SCOTUS involvement.
So, then getting "tattooed" or otherwise marked is a completely voluntary thing? SCOTUS has already spoken about government-issued ID's, which I assume would cover "passports."
"So, then getting “tattooed” or otherwise marked is a completely voluntary thing? "
It could also be fingerprinted, which is only temporarily marked or eyeball scanned which doesn't mark at all. Any unique identifier would do, the cheaper and easier the better. And it would be in exchange for taking the incentive money to prevent wicked people from scamming the vaccine givers. Of course it would be completely voluntary otherwise. Nobody would be forced to get a vaccine and those getting a vaccine take the incentive money entirely at their own choice ie they can get a vaccine with the incentive if they choose..
"SCOTUS has already spoken about government-issued ID’s, which I assume would cover “passports.”"
Are you saying SCOTUS has allowed people to enter the US without a passport? You mean asylum seekers?
"Are you saying SCOTUS has allowed people to enter the US without a passport? You mean asylum seekers?"
US citizens are not required to carry picture ID. Certain exceptions such as when entering military bases, etc., and driving on public roads, of course.
Citizens are a subset of the "People." Some of the "People" may also be exempt, at least from agents of that State, depending on the State in question.
"US citizens are not required to carry picture ID. "
In the corporate world it's very common. People are often required to wear and prominently display a photo id on a lanyard around the neck. The idea I had was that nobody would be required to wear or carry any id. Taking a unique record of identity would only be needed to prevent wicked people from repeatedly fronting up to the vaccinators, pocketing the reward, getting the vaccine and repeating it at other place with different people at a different time. I think you're being naive if you think this sort of dishonest scamming wouldn't occur.
"In the corporate world"
IOW, something you willingly accept doing in exchange for receiving payment.
Quite telling that you equate what happens in corporations with government imposed requirements.
Almost like there is a word for it.
" Certain exceptions such as when entering military bases, etc., and driving on public roads, of course."
I've never had to visit a military base and I get do my thing without driving on public roads. On the other hand I have plenty of experience with dealing with many corporations in various capacities and I have noted their need for name taking and security in their obsession with rituals like signing in and so on.
"IOW, something you willingly accept doing in exchange for receiving payment."
I agree. That's what makes a strike, a willing withdrawal from exchange, such a problem for private corporate interests. Maybe governments are less susceptible to a citizen's withdrawal of participation, government will go on regardless and probably become less democratic as the withdrawal continues. Democracy can only thrive with public participation. Without that things get oligarchical from there on.
You and your friends should feel free to fund it. And feel free to get your own tattoos. Good luck!
"You and your friends should feel free to fund it."
It's cheaper than the passport regime you evidently favor.
I’d prefer you go fuck your self with a Garden Weasel.
https://www.acehardware.com/brands/garden-weasel
That's offensive. I suppose that there are a lot of people who balk at a $100 incentive who would chose to do it for $1000, Why does the idea make you so upset? Is it because $1000 is too much? Maybe $100 is already too much.... Explain yourself,
“Explain yourself,”
I want you to insert a garden weasel up your ass. What more do I need to explain?
Why? As in why does the idea make you so upset?
I even linked to a garden weasel so you understood.

NYC is at a low elevation. Am guessing things like these vaccine passports cause folks to root for team Sea Level Rise.

Welcome to Biden's America: Achtung! schnel! Papers please!!!
Impfstoff macht frei
I thought this was initially optional, seems govt institutions want to just force the Vaccine on everyone systematically.
Hope it's all for good and worth it.
It's too difficult to require an ID to be allowed to vote, but you can easily require a vaccine passport to eat a burger.
Perhaps NYC should require a vaccine passport to be allowed to vote too?
A right to eat?
A right to commerce?
Crazy talk
"but you can easily require a vaccine passport to eat a burger."
There's nothing easy about a vaccine passport. If you want more people to get vaccinated, give them an incentive.
I saw the pace is picking up. I think the delta plus the fact that it is not so new and scary is getting more people to go ahead with it.
Carrot and stick. When hasn't that worked?
Another reason for more people to flee NYC. Have fun Mayoring the next Detroit, asshat.
Why not? If you want to enjoy societal features then you should be part of society. No different than having to wear a shirt and pants or not allowing drunk driving (which can kill innocents.)
Don't like it? Ok then. Take your freedom and fuck off. You've got your freedom and it doesn't mean that you have the freedom to put someone else in the ICU.
Time to tell the willingly unvaxxed that it is they who need to stay inside and get shit delivered, etc.
We did not do that eleven years ago.

But penis people in the ladies room is totes "part of society."
Uh huh.
Since they are nothing new I wonder where they have been pissing all this time and nobody cared.
There was a sign on the door “no shirt no service”. So I put my shirt on and took my pants off.

Apparently, three-fourths of us exercised our "freedom to put someone else in the ICU".
"Their recipients, while still vulnerable to infection, face almost no risk of serious illness or death."
This is bullshit. There have been thousands of deaths, hospitalizations, and other adverse events reported to the CDC. And undoubtedly many more unreported adverse events. If these were normal times, these "vaccines" would have been pulled from the market the same way the swine flu vaccine was pulled in the 1970s. But the corona industrial complex is controlling the narrative, so these "safe" vaccines will soon get approved by the FDA.
