Tech Companies Could Form Their Own Governments Under a New Nevada Proposal

Nevada aims to bring innovative entrepreneurs to the state without forcing the public to foot the bill. An unusual proposal from Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak may help attract to his state some tech companies fleeing from Silicon Valley—while also making Nevada a positive model for experimental government.
Sisolak wants to allow "innovative technology" companies to run their own "alternative form of local government," operating schools and courts, imposing taxes, and doing other things expected of and allowed by municipal and county authorities.
Under Sisolak's draft plan, the Governor's Office of Economic Development will consider "Innovation Zone" proposals from tech companies that own at least 50,000 acres of undeveloped land in an area of the state that doesn't already belong to a city or town. If chosen, a company must invest at least $250 million into the area upfront plus another $1 billion over the next ten years.
The new tech-backed towns and cities would initially be governed by existing authorities in the county they're located in, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which first reported on the plan. But the goal is for the new innovation zones to be run by a three-member board of supervisors and other mechanisms of an independent local government.
"During his speech last month, Sisolak specifically named Blockchains, LLC as a company that had committed to developing a 'smart city' in the area east of Reno that would run entirely on blockchain technology, once the legislation passes," the Review-Journal reports.
Sisolak said his goal was to attract new and innovative tech businesses without the usual offering of all sorts of publicly-funded perks and special tax abatements.
The current model for local governance in Nevada is "inadequate alone to provide the flexibility and resources conducive to making the State a leader in attracting and retaining new forms and types of businesses and fostering economic development in emerging technologies and innovative industries," says Sisolak's draft proposal.

It would be a tragic misstep if your presidency instead tore down one of Congress' most significant technology policy.

I felt like that comment potentially understates the value of replacing cops with more appropriately trained workers. Using the term "saving lives" makes it sound like the the concern is cops who shoot people when responding to these types of cases, which obviously happens but is still not the typical case. Having people who are trained to work with drug addicts rather than trained to restrain them should lead to a much more effective rehabilitation process, the same way that disabled students in twenty-first century schools are assigned behavior specialists whereas a hundred years ago they may have went straight to the loony bin.

There are a number of problem with the Iranian nuclear deal that Obama signed, Trump scrapped, and Biden wants to rejoin.
1) It's unconstitutional.
The Non-Proliferation Treaty was ratified by the Senate in 1969. The president doesn't have the authority to unilaterally alter it without the consent of two-thirds of the Senate. Obama never submitted his agreement with Iran to a vote in the Senate because he knew he didn't have the votes, and, today, there is no way Biden could get two-thirds of the Senate to consent to a treaty allowing Iran to enrich their own uranium--in defiance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
2) It allows Iran to enrich their own uranium.
Per the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran forfeited their right to enrich uranium, for civilian purposes, when the IAEA determined they had violated the treaty by enriching uranium in secret.
Either of Iran's allies on the Security Council, China or Russia, could have scrapped sanctions with a single vote, but they both elected to subject Iran to sanctions, as well--because they aren't insane.
Russia, at the very least, would be more than happy to supply Iran with uranium that has been sufficiently enriched for civilian purposes. Iran preferred to suffer a decade of crippling sanctions rather than accept uranium enriched by others--surely because uranium that has been sufficiently enriched for civilian purposes is insufficiently enriched for their nefarious purposes.
Last week, Iran successfully launched a satellite into orbit using a new multistage rocket with solid rocket fuel. The range is estimated to be about 3,100 miles, not far enough to hit the United States, but guess what? They haven't stopped working on the rocket technology that will make Iranian ICBMs a real threat. Because they can't hit us now doesn't mean they won't be able to in the very near future.
Iran must not be allowed to enrich their own uranium. If they are allowed to enrich their own uranium, it means both the United States will be the guarantor of security in the region for the foreseeable future--whether we like it or not--and it means that odds of there being a huge conflagration in the Middle East led by the United States go up astronomically. The neocons in the Biden administration want to be the guarantors of security in the Middle East.
People who believe that the United States will extract itself from guaranteeing the security of the Middle East and that the Middle East would be at peace--if only Iran were a nuclear power--are some of the dumbest people on earth. It isn't as dumb as the idea that the government will someday become so flush with tax revenue that they decide to cut spending, but believing that a nuclear Iran leads to peace and and a U.S. exit is far more dangerous.

A long-running University of Southern California survey shows that risk perceptions have been distorted in exactly the way you would predict: Americans overestimate their risk of dying from Covid and underestimate their risk of catching it, with the result that millions likely have been selecting a level of risk that ill serves them, their families and society.

As more Americans receive covid vaccines, counties with a 10% covid case rate will very likely achieve herd immunity (as if 46% are infected, and another 20% are vaccinated, two thirds of the population will be immune, which has been the herd immunity benchmark for the past century.
As of 2/3/2021, 157 counties in the US had surpassed a covid case rate of 13% (i.e. percent of population testing positive). Since the CDC now estimates 4.6 times more Americans have been infected (than have tested positive), counties with a 13% case rate have an average infection rate of 60% (.13 x 4.6 = .598), and are very close to achieving natural herd immunity, which occurs after about two thirds of people have been infected or vaccinated.
I discovered that state prisons were the source of covid outbreaks in sparsely populated rural counties that have the highest covid case rates (but I only researched about 40 counties).
But it appears that most counties in the US will achieve herd immunity after they attain a 13% or 14% covid case rate, and that number will decline as covid vaccines are more widely distributed.

Amazingly (or not), Reason hasn't even published an article yet citing this CDC document (which was originally published back on January 15).
While natural herd immunity for covid has been taking place in hundreds of counties and more than a dozen states, Reason (like all other left wingers) remains in deep denial.
A search on Google for "natural herd immunity" continues to generate hundreds of false and misleading articles written by Big Pharma funding recipients, Trump haters and covid lockdown lovers claiming that natural herd immunity for covid cannot occur and is a myth, and accusing anyone who claims otherwise as dangerous.
The primary reason why Big Pharma, Big Medicine, CDC, FDA, Big Tech, Democrats and left wing media propagandists have denied the existence of natural herd immunity for covid (and why they've demonized anyone who tells the truth about herd immunity) is because they want to vaccinate ALL Americans for covid (including the 127 Million Americans who are already immune due to past infection).
Why won't Reason tell the truth about, defend the rights of the 127 million (i.e. 38% of) Americans who have recovered from covid?
There is no reason to vaccinate these folks, or to restrict their freedoms (including limiting their ability to travel or engage in other business/social activities, requiring them to wear masks or remain social distant from others).

In short, it's a 165 mile course that combines rock crawling with high speed desert racing--and it's open to pretty much everybody. They have a two mile qualifying race the day before, and if you land in the top x number of people, you're in the big race. They have unlimited classes, with 40" tires, 100:1 gear ratios, and 800 hp, and they have races for smaller stuff like quads. There are usually 400 teams and 60,000 people who show up creating "Hammertown", the experience of which is often described as Burning Man meets Mad Max. There are pro-shops who do this, but there are also tons of people who build custom vehicles out of their garages at home. It's very much an aspect of and descendent of the California car culture that gave us hot rodding, etc.--still vibrant and alive.
There are two Southern Californias. I'm not surprised if you don't know that--Governor Newsom doesn't seem to know it either or he'd probably have shut the event down this year. One of the Californias is YUGE into off-roading. Moab may be to off-roaders like what Hawaii's North Shore is to surfing--the signature vacation spot for people into that. But Southern California is a place where people have so many premier places to offroad in the desert every weekend, with Glamis being an obvious example. King of the Hammers isn't even the biggest off road event in the area. That would go to the Baja 1000. And we haven't even started talking about overlanding, etc.

But if the police and courts of this modern-day version of a "Company Town" are governed by "Political Correctness," "Wokeness," and "Intersectionality" instead of individual rights and responsibility, limited government, and equal justice before the law, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the extra-territorial jurisdiction of this "Company Town!"
