Excerpts from Reason's vaults

"It's a valuable exercise to follow the tortured life of a T-shirt as it navigates the perversions of international trade. But to see what we are sacrificing by embracing protectionism while preaching free markets, Americans need look no further than their closets."
Kerry Howley
"I, T-Shirt"
"Not every book for young readers fits those stereotypes. During the last 12 years, two popular, critically acclaimed authors have written series that combine the familiar themes of rebellion and coming of age with some of the most subversive story lines seen in juvenile fiction. The novels of Lois Lowry, 68, and Margaret Peterson Haddix, 41, are thoroughly skeptical of the idea that the state should be an all-powerful benefactor. They have gained a large and loyal following, striking a receptive chord in a market not normally associated with anti-government themes."
Stuart Anderson

"In the future, the Net—the combination of all the computer networks—will be the primary means of information transmission, with print publication merely its adjunct. The Net will replace the press, and users of the Net must enjoy precisely the freedoms enjoyed by the press. If users of the Net have to worry about police surveillance, if censorship is rife, if the state forbids mere discussion of certain topics—then the liberty for which the Founders fought will have been destroyed, not by war or tyranny, but by mere technological change."
Greg Costikyan
"Closing the Net"
"In America's successful black private schools, no single approach seems to work best. Autonomous schools, diverse in program and personnel, meet the varying needs of students and parents….Education-reform efforts that rely on state mandates and higher spending are doomed. Diversity is the key to quality."
John Hood
"Strength in Diversity"
"Now as then, those who oppose free trade claim they are for 'fair trade.' Many deny being protectionists and claim their calls for 'retaliation' are really meant to further free trade by opening foreign markets."
Michael McMenamin

"Whenever I feel a twinge of self-doubt, I call up my fans at OSHA and ask them to appraise me. They tell me I'm worth the sun and the moon. It makes me feel good. It gives me reason to go on living. I walk with my head a little higher. And I'm a little more careful around unglued olives."
David Brooks
"Know Thy Worth"
"Six years ago no one, not even those of us who were hammering out privatization strategies at the Adam Smith Institute, dreamed that the British state could be rolled back as far as it has. Nor would anyone, least of all the putative representatives of the workers, have predicted that the working class would be an important new constituency in this battle to restore capitalism. But it has—and that may be the most revolutionary legacy of Margaret Thatcher's Conservative administration."
Madsen Pirie

"One hears quite frequently that there must be a new attitude toward land use, that we can no longer live with the policies of the past. These words usually preface an argument favoring strong national or state land use regulation….'It will preserve the land for generations yet unborn.' I submit that there is little substance to merit the flowery prose. The proposed controls will accomplish more of what proponents say they want to prevent. Instead of conserving a precious resource, more of it will be misused and wasted."

What a difference half a century makes. Reason now advocates for federal zoning rules to encourage the construction of high rises in the suburbs.
No, it doesn't. It advocates against Federal efforts to preserve local zoning laws that states want to eliminate.

Now Reason praises censorship of the Net by an oligopoly of specially-privileged international corporations and laments that there is insufficient suppression of news and opinion not originating from the corporate press.
It's not censorship if private companies collude to decide you have no right to speak!
The new Reason libertarianism believes that only the government needs to follow it's tenets.
Colluding to censor and financially ruin individuals over speech is now the right of corporatists and their dominions.
Companies should be free to set their own terms of use. You don't have to accept them.
And they change those terms of use on their clients continually, without mutual agreement... and collusion is never covered but constantly occurs.
Unless you have a contract with Facebook they are free to change the rules. So is this website.
Are you serious?

The percentage of textile manufacturing taking place in the United States was in the single digits in 2006 and has fallen since, but at least Reason has displayed the remarkable consistency of continuing to insist that we will have reached the appropriate level of outsourcing only once the last American with less than an undergraduate degree is made unemployable and placed on the welfare rolls.
You are an economic ignoramus to go along with your other ignorances.
I'll bite.
How so? It seems like an accurate assessment to me.
An example. My car says made in Canada on it. We know it was put together in Canada but no doubt involved the pipeline of parts, materials, engineering and thousands of people and things in the trade route we have between Mexico, the US and Canada.
I love that car. It is an r/t V8 with AWD. It came at an affordable price and is much more car than you could even get 40 years ago. Some of that is because of productivity and technology but some of that is also because trade allows it to be put together at a lower cost.
Charger
That car was either made under the Canada-US Auto Pact or, post 1989, NAFTA. In either case the trade agreement was the same. There was to be a shared market and Canada would only build as many cars for the shared market as were sold in Canada annually.
The same trade agreement has been in place now for 55 years now, so if it's cheaper and more car than you could even get 40 years ago, it's not because of the trade agreement.
But even so it's a moot point because Canada and the US have had a fully integrated economy since 1906. They're the planet's biggest trading partners by volume and dollars.
You know who doesn't have a fully integrated economy with US?
Everyone else.
The percent of income spent on clothing as a percent of income has fallen drastically over the past 100 years. Which is why a sewing machine was a common household item in the past. Today it is a hobby.
Same for food. Your grandparents paid more for food than you do.
100 years ago the average household spent 40% of their money on food and 14% on clothing. In this decade those numbers are about 13% and 4%
Protectionism does not create jobs it ends in poverty and stagnation. Trade and commerce create jobs. Wealth is not pieces of paper with dead presidents on them. Wealth is what you can buy with those pieces of paper.
As far back in history as you want to go what created wealth? People built ships. They created the Silk Road and other trade routes. The kingdoms and civilizations who prospered were those who engaged in trade with other kingdoms.
Boo!
Christmas vacation start early?

Let us remember that David Koch got dead and Charles Koch got woke so you have to expect some subtle shifts in the evolution of Reason's principles.
Of course, it's funny that Koch's mea culpa is being slammed by the left as too little, too late for this neo-Nazi right-wing extremist whose money was mostly responsible for Trump getting elected in the first place, so it's not doing him any good to say he's repented of his sins.
Unlike most religions, Wokianity isn't too welcoming to repentant sinners who have seen the light.
I think because its believers attain their own holiness and salvation through self-righteousness, rather than another god.
Why does Wokianity bother to proselytize if it won't accept converts?
Because every little Woktian's feelings are their god, and those feelings must be sated, honored and adored by all. No sin or a blasphemy must be committed against their feelings and to deny them is heresy.
The high level of writing 30 years on always astonishes me; and it's not just Reason that's gotten dumber. Magazines like the Atlantic, the Economist and the New Yorker have all dropped a few dozen IQ points in their discourse.
Reporters used to be esteemed and serious professional journalists. Now they seem to be young SJWs right out of Woke U, pushing an agenda and happy to write articles assigned by editors to spread the narrative.
